Location: Grand Forks Air Force Base is located in Grand Forks County, 15 miles west of the City of Grand Forks and 75 miles north of Fargo, North Dakota. Grand Forks AFB is located in the Heart of the Red River Valley at the junction of the Red Lake River and the Red River of the North. It is home to the 319th Air Base Wing -- the only base in Air Mobility Command selected to host remotely piloted aircraft systems.

Located on the western banks of the Red River of the North in a flat region known as the Red River Valley, the city is prone to flooding and was struck by the devastating Red River Flood of 1997.

Schools: The Grand Forks Air Force Base School and Grand Forks School Districts work together to serve approximately 7,600 area students who attend schools in the two communities.

The districts are comprised of the following in which eleven hundred people are employed including 700 teachers and 400 support and administrative staff; One Head Start Program, twelve elementary schools, four 6-8 grades middle schools, two 9-12 high grades schools, as well as an alternative high school.

Grand Forks Public School District. Grand Forks has one base school. Twining Elementary & Middle School which. High school students attend one of two schools in Grand Forks. The majority of students from the base attend Central High School.

East Grand Forks is located in Minnesota and has Sacred Heart high school and grade school, in addition to East Grand Forks public schools. The East Grand Forks Public School District offers a wide variety of extra-curricular options including drama, speech, music, athletics, and many other individual/group activities. The District consist of the following four schools: New Heights, which is a kindergarten through second grade school: South Point, which is a third grade through fifth grade school; Central Middle School which houses the sixth through eighth grades, and the Senior High School for grades 9-12There are several small communities around the Air Force Base that have their own schools including Thompson, Larimore, Manvel, and Northwood.

Housing: Grand Forks AFB is utilizing 577 military family housing units. Privatization took place Aug 13 by Balfour Beatty Communities. Single service members, if they are eligible, will be assigned a room in the dorm. There are currently 344-bed spaces available for Unaccompanied Airman Housing.
