#9 Sandbridge Beach
Virginia Beach, VA
Sandbridge Beach is located southeast of NAS Oceana. During the summer, this beach is a hot spot for family rentals. One of the benefits to Sandbridge Beach is you can fly into Norfolk Airport (ORF) and drive 40 minutes and arrive at your beach rental. As it tries to compete with the Outer Banks of North Carolina, it's location is probably it's best selling feature. The beach is nice, but it's only about 5 miles long, so it doesn't compare to the size of the Outer Banks. We rented a 5 bedroom house last summer and it was great for our extended family and there are lots of grocery stores and shopping nearby. It's just 10 minutes from Red Mill Commons shopping center where there is a Walmart, Target, and many other stores.
In my opinion, Sandbridge Beach is a great vacation spot, but I wouldn't live there if I was stationed in Virginia Beach. It's a 10 minute drive to just leave the beach and reach civilization. However, if you are looking for temporary housing in Hampton Roads, Sandbridge might be the answer for you. The winter rentals are very cheap and most houses are furnished. Check out what they have to offer at Sandbridge Realty.

NOTE: No matter where you chose to live in Hampton Roads, make sure you think about how the tunnel systems will affect your commute.
