MilPrenuer Highlight: Stacie Watts, Realtor

20 May 2013 by

Military spouses often face the challenge of finding employment every few years after a PCS move. For some spouses, extra income or “fun money” is all they need. Sometimes stay-at-home moms enjoy having a small at-home business to earn extra income and to get out of the house for more socializing and adult time. From direct sales to starting a small business, opportunities are endless. MilPrenuers: military entrepreneurs are the result of dedication and PCS frustration.

How did you decide to start your own business? How did being a military spouse play a part in that?

My husband is a Pilot in the Navy and it is just the two of us.  I decided to get into real estate because it is something I have always thought about doing and I thought I'd be good at making people's dreams of buying a home come true.  My degree is in fashion has proven to be a bit difficult to find the kind of work that I am interested in, therefore I decided it was time for a change.  So finally, when we were stationed at NAS Oceana, I went for it.

What do you enjoy about being a MilPrenuer?

I like being a MilPrenuer because you get to make your own hours and be your own boss.  With our spouses' crazy schedules it is nice being able to mold mine to fit his, even if it is only a little.  I also like being creative and with this job there are lots of things you can use creativity for.

What are some challenges of being a MilPrenuer?

While I know that I am a people person and very well trained in customer service there are some definite challenges to this career choice, especially when you don't know many people in the area.  It is 100% sales and is very uncomfortable calling strangers and soliciting them for their business.

What is your advice for milspouses that want to be MilPrenuers?

One thing I would tell others when getting into this career field or any other sales job is it takes hard work and dedication to really get good at it, but it does get easier.

What do you wish everyone knew about your business and/or being a MilPrenuer?

What I would like people to know about me, is that if you choose me as your Realtor I will be completely dedicated to finding your new home or selling your old home.  It will be like working with a friend!
