We are stationed in NAS Whidbey Island and chose to live nearby in Anacortes. We have been stationed here for nearly eight years. It is an island surrounded with breathtaking views of the mountains. There is eye candy every which way you look! We have 2 small boys and they adore all the outdoor activity options.

  • Recommendations: Downside is that it is quite rural and the lack of normal Å‚uxuries (shopping, zoo, aquarium, kids classes) can be frustrating.

If you are stationed at Whidbey Island it is about 20-30 minutes from base to Anacortes. The speed limited are low. Also depends on where in Anacortes you live. Although they were widening the roads right as we were leaving 3 years ago. Anacortes has better schools and the convenience to the mainland can’t be beat. Annacortes is closer to the mainland and closer to target, Costco. Anacortes does have grocery stores, drug stores, hardware stores, but still has that wonderful small town feel. It is only 20 minutes from Costco, Target, walmart and the mall which are in Burlington/Mt Vernon. For most major shopping you need to travel closer to seattle.

Anacortes has that small town feel that is getting harder to find these days. It is a wonderful town very close to NAS Whidbey Island. The schools are marvelous and the community is very comfortable and quiet. We lived in Rock Ridge which overlooks the San Juan islands and the view was breath taking. The fog horn from the ferry to the islands and on to British Colombia is magical. Plenty of terrific restaurants and unique shops make this a tourist spot for sure. We would take orders back to NAS Whidbey in a heartbeat and we would certainly buy a home in Anacortes!

  • Recommendations: Family friendly with plenty to do - I would absolutely recommend Anacortes. It can be a bit pricey... has the nick name "Can't Afford Us"... but with due diligence, you can find your place.
