Riverwalk: Off Base Neighborhood/Subdivision

Review

"Was a wonderful area 26 years ago"

In 1996 I moved here from Washington DC on my final tour of duty. Retired in 2000 and stayed. The community was well kept and run. Today the community is still well kept but the general noise has increased substantially as we are hemmed in by four lane highways. Being an open community everyone is welcome to stroll through - it is nice walk - the large increase in home areas adjacent to Riverwalk has lead to increased litter on the parkway, increased speeding and racing on the parkway, and only recently theft from homeowners cars and a few home breaking. I live on a beautiful treed comfortably landscape lot along the parkway in a delightful home but the steady barking of dogs, increasing violation of covenants (specially parking of commercial vehicles, boats, trailers) and a rather dismissive HOA and management group has degraded Riverwalk. The schools are average at best. That all said it is still a pleasant area for any military family that is not concerned about the shortcomings.

Pros Cons
  1. Nice area but shortcomings
  1. Not as great as it once was

"This Neighborhood Offers a Little Something for Everyone"

Riverwalk is a very attractive neighborhood with well maintained homes and lots of old growth trees. The neighborhood itself consists of a number of sub-subdivisions, each with its own style of architecture and living accommodations including some with townhomes, tract housing, and large custom built homes. The result is a wide variety of price ranges and a little something for everyone. The neighborhood centerpiece is the roomy River Club clubhouse with swimming pool and tennis courts. But the piece de résistance is the fact that the neighborhood abuts the Elizabeth River. There is a put-in right down the street from our house. We frequently wheel the kayak there when we want to go for a cruise up and down the river.

Pros Cons
  1. Clubhouse Available for rental
  2. Active neighborhood swim team
  3. Old growth trees
  4. Attractive walking paths
  1. Public schools only so-so

"A little oasis away from the hustle and bustle!"

Riverwalk is an AMAZING community! Our little oasis from the crazy, military life! The community has a HUGE pool, tennis courts, play ground, dog play area, and community boat access to the Elizabeth River! You constantly see neighbors out and about...walking, running, walking their dogs, walking their kids! Community hosts Christmas, Easter, and seasonal events. Homes come in all shapes and sizes...hard not to find something that meets what you are looking for! When we were house hunting, we went everywhere! Suffolk, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and all over Chesapeake...but when our realtor showed us a few homes in Riverwalk...we were SOLD! The community has extremely easy access to 64, 464, and the 168 expressway. No bridges...no tunnels...no crazy traffic to contend with! NOB is about a 30 minute commute, Little Creek is about 35 minutes, and Oceana/Dam Neck are about 45 minutes! Can't beat that!!!

Pros Cons
  1. Beautiful Community!!!
  2. Friendly Neighbors!!!
  3. A little bit of everything...homes, condos, and an over 55 community!
  1. Mosquitoes...you are near the river!
  2. Slight flooding during hurricanes and Nor'easters
