This school has been everything!! She has learned and gained so much from this school. There PTA is AMAZING and Has funded so many events and trips they are very involved. Lorne is definitely a community. My daughter just started kinder here and loves it. she tells me about everything she does from learning math to dance class to going to the library. it's very hand on and i think this school is Definity a hidden gem in Northridge. I had a lot of schools to choose from and I'm glad i chose Lorne!!!

Unfortunately, our experience at this school was disappointing. The teacher was good, but the unprofessional behavior of the principal and office staff contributed to an environment that lacked engagement and a strong sense of community. The safety at this school is concerning. I frequently got emails and calls regarding attendance, but when my child was injured, communication was limited to a small note in their backpack. A bullying incident occurred, and it took. almost every parent in the classroom to complain in order for the Principal to address the issue. In contrast, my childs new school has an anti-bullying program integrated into their curriculum. Additionally, the principal at this school had reached out to parents more than once for support in petitioning programs at risk of being cut and having to share the campus with another charter school, but the communication was inconsistent and unprofessional. First, the principal was outraged by the proposed changes, but later, she sent an email stating she was delighted to share the campus with another school.

Lorne is a fantastic school in many ways. Some of the most beloved teachers have spent their entire multi-decade careers, which should tell you something. There is always something engaging being planned for the students at the school, from fun community events for the holidays (Halloween festivals, movie nights, dinners) to their big STEAM night in the Spring. JPL sent a Mars rover over last year and there were chemists, geologists, marine biologists, and so many other professionals who set up demonstrations. The kids-- and families!-- really loved it. The Robotics Team places in competitions and the big rocket making program for the fifth graders is a year highlight. The school also recently received a beautification grant and painted gorgeous murals all over the campus. The PTA is strong and engaging and always planning something fun. It truly feels like a community at Lorne.

This school is not talked about enough its a hidden gem. Lorne is such an amazing school. They always manage to make learning fun. My kids love coming to school every day. They know how to keep the kids engaged in learning by having different organizations come and do presentations for them. One of my kids favorite presentations was the mosquito league. The robotics team is something my child is looking forward to joining in his last year at this school. Teachers are the top of the top and the office staff is so helpful and very welcoming to all of their parents.

I really love this school although this is my first year.

The teachers are greatly engaged and students are lovely and very inviting to new students. In fact, my kindergartener was at another school and did not like it. She is very happy at Lorne now.

2019-2020 school year was one for the books. A 2-week break turned into a year at home. But our teacher kept the kids engaged and learning brought an extremely difficult time.

This school is great! They did a great job during the pandemic and have continued to make school feel "normal" as the students return to school. The teachers quickly turned their lessons from in person to online in a matter of days. They were supportive to the parents and kids. They walked parents and children through how to use their devices and how to use the Schoology platform. They were patient and kind. As we return to school, they have set up a very welcoming but strict protocol where the children are able to attend, but feel safe and cared for.

They are building up their Engineering Lab and Science Lab. Last year my child was involved in the after school STEM club which was great. They just had an amazing virtual STEAM event to get the kids and their families involved in STEAM at home. They have had multiple Reading Night events where teachers read stories via Zoom to the students who attend. There are many activities that make this school family friendly.

When I picked my children up from school the first day back from the pandemic, they both said, "Thanks for taking us to school today Mom, it was great to be back!" I can't say how happy that made me.

Our daughter just graduated after two years at Lorne Street Elementary. Her teachers were incredibly supportive and enthusiastic, and I think the new Principal will help the school expand its offerings. Go into the classroom to observe the teachers in action. Don't just rely on a score. Our daughter is going into Noble Middle School in the fall, and I believe she has been well prepared.

This year the school started a leader in me program and I really see my son implementing the teachings in his every day life. when hes having an issue hell ask me to help him make a plan so he can problem solve on his own he will also ask me how can we make this a win-win situation!

Unfortunately at the beginning of the year my son had a few issues with not using his words and actually pushed a kid..that day the principal called me, his teacher set up a meeting, a behavior chart was put in place and after a week his behavior turned around and he uses his words first now. It makes me feel good to know that if the situation were in reverse it would be handled swiftly and promptly as it was with my son.

My sons homework always reflects what theyre learning in class. On Mondays his teacher sends home a breakdown of everything theyll learn that week so as parents we can discuss topics that also reflect what theyre learning.

Do not send your child to this school. There isnt a robotics program. They dont even have computers in every room. The kids might get a half hour of completely unsupervised IPad time once a week. There is no technology here.
We found the teachers here to be incredibly lazy and petty.

Have had children attended this school and received a strong foundation. Have worked here as well. Though not perfect, no where is, the students are safe, the staff as a whole is excellent, the education provided is execellent given what the teachers have to deal with from the district, parents, and even the students themselves at times. Many of the employees have raised their children in this school and have stayed on once their children have gone. That says a lot. The nay sayers would be unhappy wherever they are.

I am a quite shocked at all that I'm reading on this site. I have been at this school for years and cannot believe the attacks on the school and the PTA. I try to attend as many events as possible and do not see what they are describing. I have heard of some drama related to an on going incident with a child but there is a process in dealing with the situation. Over the years, my children have always been protected by their teachers and the office staff including the principal who has a great rap ore with all students. It seems that some are attacking the PTA. From what I've seen, the PTA has done so much for our students. The teachers are great, I've had many and they are always doing their best. The staff is very friendly and always tries to help me whenever I need something or direct me to the right person. The attacks on the the teachers, staff and principal are wrong. You all need to get along and stop "bullying" the PTA. My child's scores from the CST when it existed were perfect for a couple of years and almost perfect in other years. The teachers who are almost all the same helped my child achieve this. They are good teachers. Sometimes, like in everything, there might not be all perfect ones. The test scores have gone down overall because of the common core which is a whole new way of taking tests. Let's give it some time people.

Clear as day, many many families love Lorne Street. I believe this is why everyone from all sides is fighting very hard for the school. Because they love their teachers, they love the students, they love the atmosphere. If I can say this, none of us like what is happening with the bullying problem. We've never really experienced something like this so I am sure to some of us this is new. I don't know about this division- but we all have to remind ourselves that we are also adults. We cannot get out of hand and hurt families and people just because we do not understand their situation or do not like a particular person(s). No one person has a power to remove anyone from anything. Like another parent said we have to think of the kids! as they are the ones who have to be there day in and day out. Please be respectful, I agree with that. Don't do anything that will hurt how people view you, since we are a small community word gets around and this also affects the kids. I know this because this is how I heard about this website. Everyone please stop with this. Be grown adults and stop acting like high school kids. People are entitled to their opinions- doesn't mean we all have to agree. Many good points and bad points in all previous comments. I do also love our office staff- they are amazing ladies. My youngest daughter is attending is currently attending Lorne Street. I have had nothing but good experiences here at the school. The PTA is super involved with the school which means we have a group of parents that help with everything between being room parents and volunteering for many school events. The teachers we have had are just wonderful. We have no problem going to them with issues with our daughter and things are taken care of right away.
Mr. Merritt our school principle is a dream. Never have I had such an attentive principal. He is easy to talk to about all things Lorne Street and issues are taken care of in a timely manner. I now work on the yearbook and we have plenty of interactions with him promoting and getting the word out about everything yearbook and he is also very good about all school activities. The man is amazing, hard working and has all the children in mind while running this wonderful school. The kids all love him and he knows every kid by name.
Our home school left a lot to be desired, so we purposely went to Lorne Street because of all they have to offer. They have an art instructor that works with all grades. They have a computer lab and instructor, so our kids are learning to use computers efficiently at a young age. The school is blessed with an orchestra that starts with 3rd grade, daughter plays the violin now because of the wonderful very hands on teacher. The school has many school field trips that the PTA helps pay for. Each grade gets to go on two or more a year. This helps the kids to learn in real life and not just from books.
Children come out of Lorne Street very prepared for middle school. My oldest daughter went to Lorne street and is doing very well in middle school, because of the dedication the teachers have in preparing them in every way to succeed in upper grades.
Overall I wouldn't go anywhere else, we love Lorne Street School.

Children are watching the behavior of some staff, some PTA, their principal and others treat families very poorly. I do not know the issues first hand but from what I've read and heard today at school it seems that PTA is okay with bullying as their behavior is poor also and they are upset that the principal is being questioned? I am not okay with my daughter being bullied. We haven't had issues but I'm not okay with this happening at our school. We will not be attending movie night as I feel that if I support PTA functions it means I'm okay with other families going thru bullying and I am not okay with that. Maybe PTA should be the ones forced to leave. How dare anyone come on here and try to bully people out of the school?

My daughter has been happy at Lorne. She has many friends, she's had good teachers, we have not experienced anything negative directly. I have spoken to some mothers that I know and they've shared their stories, my daughter has brought stories home- some I am very uncomfortable with. Per say, these bathroom assaults? Choking? And I have seen children running loose around the school unattended. I give 4 stars because of the teachers and parent community. I minused a star as a reflection of this bully issue at hand. It is never okay for parents themselves to come on a website and comment about how people are handling their personal situations. As for my family, we'd like to be in a safe school where this does not occur anymore. I would also like to say that knowing parents have come forward and PTA and other parents are being mean and hateful towards them makes me feel uneasy as if I ever have an issue like this. Please be more compassionate and not hateful. Be a good example for your children.

When I first came to Lorne St . I was beyond happy with the staff and school. The seemed to be a sense of community . That reminded me of my elementary school years , years ago. My daughter had an amazing teacher . This year I was overjoyed by my daughters class and teacher. I'm on two different boards at school. I think very highly of our office and support staff. I appreciate all of the extra time our Principal gives to the school. We have many after hour activities. Spring Festival on a Saturday , Trunk or treat on a Friday night, movie nights throughout the year. All of these are only possible because of our Principal . He gives the school and students time he isn't paid for. For that I'm very thankful.
Unfortunately our experience doesn't end there. We have our negative issues too. Currently our 2ed grade is plagued with bullying. Not all of the students have suffered from the actions of one child. But the hand Full that have . Have definitely suffered. There has been hitting, kicking, ramming of ones head into another's back, shoving,girls have been followed into their designated bathroom. Only to be physically assaulted . I have seen him spit at our office staff and kick a shoe at the staff as well. All of this has been documented and taken up with the Board and District . Eva Garcia was informed of his actions back in late September early October. Nothing has yet to be done. We have our local Board member Vivian ?!?!??! ( I don't remember her last name) out with district supervisors out for a parents meeting. And still nothing is being done. I personally asked what the district policy is on physical violence . I was not given a straight answer. So as far as I can tell choking, hitting and kicking are acceptable. Many parents feel the Principal has dropped the ball. I think it's a team effort. Not to be put on one persons shoulders. Now because of all of this. There is a new divide in our school. All of this I personally believe is due to a big lack of communication. Some parents have taken action. Unfortunately this action has turn into All things wrong with our school . And the focus from our young Bully has shifted. We are being distracted by a cleaner campus and fixtures being fixed. Yet our young Bully still runs all over campus creating fear and dismay.
I believe once this issue is taken care of our school will be great again.

Horrible my son has attended this school since Kindergarden and has had nothing bad experiences. The school has repeatedly lost his inhaler and not informed me about it until my son is in dire need of it. The school has a horrible bullying issue that school staff will not address and District has been called and even they have not been productive in making the school safe. District is offering opportunity transfers to victims of bullying instead of the bully. We will most likely not be returning to this school unless there is some staff changes.

Lorne St. School is the "little hidden jewel in the San Fernando Valley"! All of the Admin Staff (including Mr. Merrit, Ms. Flores, Ms. Rita & Ms. Blanca) are great help! The teachers, the Aides, the Librarian, the extracurricular classes staff, the maintenance crew and even the Cafeteria staff....they are all amazing!! Everybody at this school is motivated & eager to work there. My two kids are excited with the class curriculum because it not only educational but it is also strength-based! Parents are encouraged to participate in their child's education. Lorne St. is culturally sensitive to everybody's needs!!

I currently have a child in 1st grade and one in Kinder. I am very pleased with our experiences at this school. My kids LOVE going to this school! I have found the teachers and staff to be very caring, kind and helpful. I feel no hesitation in asking for help from any of the office staff or teachers. It's very clear to me that the teachers and staff really care about their students! I'm happy my children have the opportunity to attend this school!

As far as I know, teachers are able to modify each child's experience, if they need extra assistance. It's difficult with 30 kids in a classroom, but they understand that not everyone learns in the same ways or at the same rate.

In the 10 years that I have been involved with the school, I have never seen or heard of incidents of bullying, until this year, when two new families of 2nd graders arrived. The children had already been kicked out of other schools, the parents are in complete denial of their children's behavioral issues. The kids have each already changed classrooms. The principal is doing his best to address the situation, given that there are many restrictions on how to handle this behavior within the LAUSD. The parents are not helping, and are trying to destroy the great atmosphere of the school, because their own kids are not getting away with pushing & hitting other children, and disrupting classes.

I love this school. both my older children were exceptionally well prepared for the move from 5th grade to 6th. There was never a bullying problem, or many behavior problems, until this school year, 2016-2017. The parents that are complaining in the other reviews are probably the ones who are causing the problems, and trying to get the principal in trouble. I hope they are forced to leave the school, because it was great until they got there. otherwise, the 10 years I have spent with my kids at this school has been great.

I've had nothing but a positive experience with this school. Mr. Merritt especially has helped my girls adjust when they first arrived at the school. The administration takes the time to listen to my concerns and helps me understand their response to them.

I don't always get what I ask for my children, but it's well-explained as to why the school cannot accommodate.

With that said, the teachers are superb when it comes to allow parents to modify the homework to fit the needs of the individual students. They accept the accommodations and grade the students based on those modifications.

Some people have posted regarding bullying - my daughter experienced this and I found that the administration quickly responded and notified me as soon as they could. We discussed the response of the adults in charge and we discussed what possible actions our family could do to prevent future incidents. The administration also asked for our input as to how we wanted the situation handled.

I cannot imagine any school more responsive and more in-tune with the students. I love that the school leadership stands in the middle of the campus in the morning as well as out front every afternoon. My daughters tell me that the principal walks the playground at recess and even will play with the kids when invited and when it's possible.

What more could one want?

I was recently disrespected by staff when I voiced my concerns about the unsafe grounds. More importantly my child is in kindergarden and it's our first year here BUT I do not think we will be returning next year. Staff is rude and gives you run around when you express your concerns. Principal does not care about students or parents. Everyone in this staff is just collecting a check. If I could give zero stars I would.

This school is a dangerous place. Do not expect them to call you if your child is hurt. Do not expect them to do anything about bullying. Do not expect them to have competent teachers in the classroom. There is only one decent teacher in every grade level. There is no respect for parents. It is a disgrace. My son teacher Mrs. Melody Bitter does such an amazing job! She is very fair, she makes time to talk to every student. She is very reliable.When I leave her a message she always makes the time to get back to me. Mrs. Bitter is very organized and detailed, she knows what she is doing. I don't know what school the previous parent review is referring to but it can't be Lorne. Teachers are willing to meet in person or speak on phone depending on who you have. However the best way to communicate with them is by email and will set up a time to meet in person that way. The principal is a great leader who truly has an open door policy. To say that he is intimidated makes no sense since he actively runs to the school unlike some who work behind their desk. You will not find better parent involvement at any school anywhere. The PTA is extremely active and the President not only has a son in college who used to attend Lorne but has a little girl who STILL attends. The rest of the PTA board members all have kids who attend and are very active with fiund raising and working with the school and the staff. Perhaps if the previous reviewer was actually involved with the PTA or with the school instead of posting baseless and false reviews they would know that. The school playground is mostly blacktop but there is ample shaded area and a huge grass area at the center of the school. If you want a school that works as a true partner with you for your child this is it.

Lorne St/Lorne Magnet is the best school my child has ever attended...He is new to 5th grade, able to enjoy his new environment, friends, and loving it! Lorne has the best academic, music, and leadership programs taught by compassionate and excellent teachers/mentors. He will be talking about Mr Carver for many years to come... Great PTA, caring teachers, Principal who cares. Math/Science standards enforced and Gifted teachers available. This is the second round with daughter at the school, and even though many of my son's teachers have left, their replacements are GREAT TEACHERS!

My son has been at Lorne since Kindergarten and will be entering the 5th Grade. We have loved every teacher that he has had throughout. Each one has been instrumental in the success that he has had with all that he has attempted and accomplished in school.

This school is great!! An awesome principal, wonderful teachers and a dedicated PTA!! This is by far one of the best (tucked away) schools in the LAUSD!! Absolutely no issues with bullies! (i think the person that posted that was just a grumpy, crazy person!!) The principal and teachers are on top of any issues that may arise. No safety issues here!! I agree that Math/Science standards are enforced!!!

My child attended Kindergarten and it was a good experience for the most part considering it is a LAUSD school. His K teacher was very nice and patient and appeared to really care about teaching the kids. PTA is strong and most parents appear to care and help out with donations, etc. The only issue I have and this is with LAUSD schools in general is the drastic budget cuts and not enough resources for the teachers. There are too many students at this school and my fear was that my child would be lost and not receive enough 1 on 1 attention. I am sending my child to private school for the coming school year and will be basically paying for smaller class size and more individual attention. If I could not afford tuition I would defenitely keep him at lorne street.

This school is amazing and many of the teachers are very dedicated to the students. The PTA does so much to help raise money and fund as many things as they can. But it does have a problem with taking care of bullies, they don't really do much to stop it or help deter it.

So far I am very impressed with this school. My children entered the magnet program in Sept. after going to a public charter school, and the education is definitely at a higher level. Their two teachers are both highly competent and caring. Other strong points are the orchestra, the library, the free after school programs, and the PTA. My kids are making friends and are enjoying the school's spirit. They also get magnet points for middle school.

Lorne St is one of the better schools in the LAUSD. Their PTA works very hard to maintain as much activities for the kids as possible with the limited resources they have. Yes, they send out flyers for almost everything, but it's expected since LAUSD removed funding for almost every extracurricular activity. My youngest had Mrs. Sachs and my eldest had Mrs. Matsuno. I have to say last year was one of the best school year yet. Mrs. Sachs is very calm and soft spoken; she manages her kids very well. Her demeanor is reflected by how calm/manageable her students are. Mrs. Matsuno is enthusiastic in her teaching that helps her kids stay focus while learning. She will go out on the yard and participate in activities with her kids. I think she has more energy than some of her students. Both teachers are awesome. They identify the strength and weaknesses of their students and will spend time 1 on 1 to help each child grow. This school is a complete opposite of the last LAUSD School my children attended. I m giving them 4 STARS because their magnet program is only from 3-5th grade. It would be nice if it started from 1st. Parents involvement will determine how successful a child can be.
