This Charter school offers private school quality in a public school setting. You'll feel the love the staff puts in what they do everyday in the school. Strong community with events for every taste, high parent involvement (any parent can make things happen), small classrooms, individualized learning, lots of outdoor education experiences, strong focus on social emotional learning, and so much more.

We have loved Horizons K-8's small class sizes and the fact that each class has a paraprofessional to assist as well! The small-group learning for literacy and math has been a good fit for our child. The community has been wonderful and we appreciate the focus on relationship-centered learning and outdoor experiences. My student's class is like a family, and they all support each other. The teachers are dedicated and the specials, including STEAM, PE, Art, and Music, have been great too.

We chose Horizon's for the small class size and community engagement. We have found the teachers to be amazing, connected, and supportive of our children. We have found the approach fosters intrinsic motivation for learning in our two children. We also appreciate the unique learning experiences with trips to the local theaters, library, outdoor education, and kid-friendly concerts.

I am a new parent of a kindergartener and 1st grader and so far we are loving this school!

All the K-2 teachers are wonderful, my kids are learning a lot and I appreciate the small class sizes.

I really appreciate the administration and I think the school has addressed many of the issues from past years that people have named. They have expanded counseling access as well as learning support staff. The Head of School and Assistant Head of School are dynamic, energetic and responsive leaders.

As a low income family, I don't feel overburdened by the fundraising - they have many options if your financial resources are limited.

Overall, I've found the community really welcoming and both my children enjoy school. Classrooms feel well-ordered and not chaotic. My kids teachers are all exceptional and I've heard nothing else about the other K-2 teachers.

Horizons has been monumental in my son's education and emotional development. They have taken the time to listen, to care and to try many different things and approaches to help my son with many different struggles. In addition to that, he has learned a lot and continues to grow. Horizons takes a lot of time to evaluate and make sure your child is meeting the markers they need to meet. There are so many supports within the school and classroom to set up your child for success. I have been very pleased with our experience so far and glad I listened to other parents reccomendations when choosing this school. My son is neurodivergent and they have worked so hard with my boy!

Horizons is a good school. Its has a heart and that can be felt. It has problems like any school but because it is a very white entitled school, it is often smug about handling them. I would not discourage anyone from applying- your kids will receive a good education (not stellar). And the relationship-based focus is undeniable. Two things- for some reason, the # of kids needing special ed support is quite high, which is fine, but the school does not do a great job of teaching executive functioning skills. And, be prepared to be asked for money constantly.

We've had a wonderful experience at Horizons. The project based learning drew us to the school. Also the school's emphasis on social-emotional learning made a huge difference for our children. The teachers are incredibly supportive and take the time to understand each student as a whole person - not just academically but socially and emotionally as well. They create a nurturing environment where students feel valued and supported.

Our children grew not only in their academics but confidence and self-awareness, thanks to the dedicated teachers. The school also prioritizes overnight outdoor education experiences, where the students are able to challenge themselves outside of the classroom. We are happy with the well-rounded education they are receiveing at Horizons. Highly recommend!

I have two children at Horizons and am so happy that I chose to enroll them here. We have had a wonderful experience with every single teacher at every grade level. I have volunteered in both of my children's classrooms, and I am continuously amazed at the ingenuity, patience, and passion of each staff member. Having been a teacher myself before having children, I know how rare it is to have a school in which every staff member exudes such dedication and passion. I am also impressed at how they manage to provide so many outdoor educational opportunities, from overnight trips to the YMCA to simple pond walks. I am also impressed with the amount of independent, project-based learning that takes place, and the high standards all students are held to. I know from talking to parents in my neighborhood that my children are getting educational opportunities that are simply not happening in many other schools.

I have two children at Horizons and have had a great experience. My children's teachers have been absolutely amazing since kindergarten. They are kind, engaged and interested in their students which is not always the case in public school. The social-emotional support that the school provides to help children navigate conflict is fantastic and something that I wish that I had when I was a child. My children are learning mindfulness skills for emotional regulation and interpersonal communication skills on a daily basis which will serve them well in all aspects of their life.
The project based learning has also been really helpful for my children as it allows them to be collaborative with their teachers and helps them to enjoy learning. My children enjoy going to school every day and look forward to seeing their teachers after breaks. I highly recommend Horizons if you are looking for a school for your child.

We love the small class sizes and paraeducator support. The teachers and principals are fantastic! My child feels very connected to the school, like part of a family. She is excited to go to school every day and is learning a ton. We also love that the kids eat lunch outside and have a lot of outdoor experiences!

Kindergarten was wonderful. Now in our third year, things have changed drastically and none for the better. There is an overwhelming and toxic obsession with "equity" but in ways that are not equitable at all - a buzzword to signal the virtues of its use. The professed affinity for parent-led governance and respecting "core values" are talking points, as well, and hardly honored in practice. The Fundraising is constant, but only for outcomes deemed worthy by the staff - 37 parents in Grades 1 and 2 were told we couldn't clean the classrooms professionally because some parents felt it created "questionable power dynamics". The number of in-service days is absurd - you'd better have lots of PTO saved up. The Grade 1 and 2 classes have a "well-known" and years-long issue with rodents; teachers and staff punt this issue onto the parents by asking for volunteers to clean the classes. The physical security of the vast majority of the building is non-existent, with windows facing unimpeded access to the streets - but at least the staff is safe in the main building behind the locks you'll hear a lot about. The facilities are tired and old, and besides a relatively nice playground there are next to none - unless you count an overgrown baseball diamond. We had an extremely strange experience with MTSS where teachers collected data on my child without my consent - and then refused for months to show me the "results" of what they had collected. The parking and morning chaos of drop-offs is impressive only in that it's remarkable no kids have been hurt yet. The neighborhood is covered in orange "don't park here" cones, giving you that true sense of Boulder hospitality for having to inconvenience homeowners for the 30 minutes a day kids go to and come from the school they all moved next to. I cannot counsel strongly enough to avoid this school at all costs.

My family absolutely loves Horizons K8. My daughter is thriving, both academically and socially. WE have loved all the teachers, and the fact that she gets to spend 2 years with her teachers (after Kindergarten) is such a blessing. They really get to know her and are able to provide such individualized learning opportunities. The community is amazing and all the parents are really passionate about making the environment enjoyable and successful. I cannot say enough good things about Horizons.

I am so happy that I came to Horizons. I have two children that are neurodivergent and the program at Horizons meets ALL of their needs. Horizons truly is a place where teachers and staff teach from their hearts and students and families are encouraged to take ownership of the school and have a voice in what happens. Horizons has been a blessing for my family, and I would choose this experience for my two, ten-fold.

Weve been very happy with our experience at Horizons. Both of our elementary aged kids love it. Strong sense of community and teacher-led curriculum are stand outs, as is the primary emphasis on social-emotional learning. We appreciate how the school encourages students to take ownership of their learning experience. Possibly not as many overall resources as a traditional (non charter) school but they seem to makes the most of what they have. We had the chance to switch back to our neighborhood school (Creekside) when our youngest enrolled in kindergarten but stayed the course with Horizons and have no regrets.

Horizons is a wonderful community to be apart of for students. Our academics are rigorous, our social emotional emphasis is top-notch, and our teachers are the absolute best. This is a school/community that truly cares about each individual that passes through the doors. I feel as though both of my children are seen, heard, appreciated and honored here. It's a public option which is absolutely amazing - it has a much more private school, individualized energy. The class sizes are the smallest you can find in BVSD and each classroom has a para-educator that also has amazing qualifications and skills. It's everything you could want for a school experience!

We chose Horizons 3 years ago for our now 3rd grader and our second kid just started in Kindergarten. We couldnt be happier. The teachers are amazing, the combined 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 grade system is fantastic for the kids to learn at their own speed and get challenged above their grade level if they excel in an area and the Horizons community makes you feel welcome. There are tons of events during school time (library trip, Jeff&Paige, Denver mint, museums, theater, overnight outdoor education trip, winter sport trips etc) and outside of school time (community events like a chili cook off, pancake breakfast, fall dance, clothing swaps and more).

So glad we discovered Horizons K-8. We moved to Boulder and went straight into a private Waldorf school. (Disaster! )Then, just in passing, a woman mentioned Horizons K-8. I wish I could thank her for telling me about Horizons. My kids thrived, made friends, played outdoors, experienced outdoor education and small class sizes. Sure, it was a bit of a transition from Waldorf to a charter school, but the teacher's understood where they were coming from and helped them transition. As my 8th grader has said, Horizons School is "approachable" and welcoming. All kids are welcomed and valued. We are so thankful for the opportunities we have been given at Horizons.

This school has been a balm to my daughters existence. They push for social-emotional connections, right from the beginning, meeting each child at the level they need in their educational journey. Fabulous teacher support. They have been amazing with my child's neuro-divergent needs.

An FYI- this school DOES require the parents to participate and to pay some fees at the beginning of school to support the children's education but they do offer a heck of a great curriculum. My daughter just left to "camp" for the next few days in the mountains, with her schoolmates! I can't recommend this school enough.

My child (last of three) graduated last year and was actually not prepared academically. Her deficits were not addressed adequately at Horizons. The counselors at her current school have pointed out how she was under-serviced. There have been multiple insinuations that the MTSS program at Horizons is "inefficient". When comparing what students from other schools have learned, my child did not have the fun, hands on experiences that at one time, Horizons was known for. Socially she was not prepared at all. It is still a good school but no where near the kind of broad, child-centered experience my older two had. It seems tired. I have asked many clarifying questions of both the registrar and AP, and received vague answers or I don't know. We felt lost the last two years. Lastly, the pressure on parents to fundraise is endless. We were tired too! The teachers seem very burned out. Tired! Horizons was a great school. Electric creative learning. If we were to enroll our last child again, we would have gone to our neighborhood school, Bear Creek.

Horizons is our 3rd school at the elementary level in Boulder County. The first was a private school, and the other (short-lived) experience was another BVSD school.

Horizons offers far and away the best educational experience weve had in Boulder. My kids complained of not being challenged at their other schools. In contrast, at Horizons, teachers are adept at meeting the children at their academic level - stretching those who need it and helping those who need support - in a seamless fashion. Everyday at pickup I am greeted by happy children who cannot wait to tell me about their day. I cannot sing enough praises about the teachers.

The combined classes is a model that has worked well for our kids. In addition, the school has a strong buddy system, with kids serving as buddies to younger children and being buddies of older children. My children are thrilled to be responsible leaders in the eyes of younger children and thrive under the attention and mentorship of the older children.

The social-emotional component of the curriculum is very strong. Kids are frequently engaged in activities that foster mutual respect and support. These learnings permeate their interactions at home as well.

We feel like we won the lottery being accepted into Horizons, and feel that we are getting the equivalent - if not better than - a private school education at the school.

It has taken all of my 5 years (as a parent) at Horizon's K-8 to understand the school. It is truly a magical unicorn and unlike any school in the district. It was created as a "teacher led" model. It is truly special. And with it's uniqueness comes the challenges. Not everyone understands or appreciates these differences/challenges. Parents have a voice in the monthly council meetings. But a majority of parents do not attend these council meetings. If you want your child to be an independent thinker and learner this is your school. If you were lucky enough to get a seat offered to you in the lottery - TAKE IT. But know, this is a different school. You will be asked for donations to pay for school supplies, outdoor education (trips they take in the fall) and winter sports (in Jan/Feb ish). Scholarships are available based on need. Most of the kids who attend Horizons do NOT live in the neighborhood around the school. So in order to build community with school friends it takes major effort by the parents with playdates, etc. It is an incredible school. My child loves it. If you accept a spot at the school, plan on being an active parent volunteer then you will see for yourself what a great opportunity your child has. At Horizons it's NOT about learning to take tests and memorize facts, it's about developing the whole child and embracing the learning process and creating an environment that children WANT to learn in.

Our child is now in middle school and has been at Horizons K-8 since kindergarten. Both she and our family have been extremely happy with the school. The classes are 18-20 children, with a teacher and a para, in addition to specialists, volunteers, etc., who rotate through the classes. We love the small, mixed grade classes and the focus on both experiential and socio-emotional learning, as well as many other things. The children have overnight trips of increasing length starting in first grade; other activities like winter sports (sometimes overnight trips and sometimes field trips); and specials including art, music, Spanish, PE and STEAM. They also emphasize contributing to the community and making the world a better place. Being able to skip that painful transition to middle school is an added bonus. We feel so lucky that she can have this education and experience in a public school.

Horizons has much going for it. Slightly lower class sizes and an authentic eye on social-emotional learning. Because of the lack of diversity, etc - there probably is less bullying but when there is, it is downplayed and kids are taught about brain chemistry. Kids that are learning just under average are completely ignored creating a hole for them to fall into rather than structures for further success. The electives (specials) leave much to be desired. The Elementary Spanish teacher basically shows videos. The art that the kids produce looks mass-produced. The governance issue is a mess leading parents confused about where they input in a teacher-led school. The school asks for money for just about everything- even masks during Covid although the state gave out free masks. They wanted 'better' ones. It is an elite school and often attracts highly educated parents that otherwise would consider private. They do hope to increase diversity and will need to find better ways of making offerings equitable for everyone.

In the earlier grades, it has a good amount of homework. As I've gotten older, though, there's been a lot too much for me. My friend spends hours and hours per day on homework, including hours on weekends, and she's still behind. I think they need to cut back a little.

I have learning differences myself, and I haven't been supported well. I got a doctors note and everything asking for certain accommodations, which could have easily been given to me, and it took a surprising amount of effort just to convince the teachers that I really needed them. I also had a teacher tell the class about me having a disability that I don't even have. Rumors were going around because of it. Also, multiple people that I can think of have dropped out of Horizons because their special needs weren't being supported. I've also seen one kid with a learning disability being literally screamed at to the point of them crying because they did something.

It's a pretty good school. I didn't rate it well on these criteria, but in general, I've enjoyed going here. There's a good community that I know I could never leave- I have lots of friends here and since the school is pretty small, most people know each other. We get to do fun activities like winter sports and community service. The classroom sizes are small. You still have to consider what I said above, though. There are lots of places where Horizons could improve.

Lengthy meetings gave me impression that the principle does not want to be making any decisions like a leader. The parent-led approach seems to be tailored for rich families, and those that are not as rich got yelled at or disregarded in emails. If you are not rich enough, don't send your kids to Horizens K-8.

Just look at their recent news on Daily Camera about they are planning to raise $150k buying tents for outdoor school reopening! That's $450 each kids! If that'd not unrealistic, maybe some families are just not rich enough to study there.

The school's mission is to develop social emotional skills and yet there is bullying (they call it microaggressions) and little is done. When our child was bullied and eventually blamed for physical aggression we had to insist the administration call it what it was; they wanted to sweep every problem away.

This school has just the right amount of homework, and importantly none of it is busy work. There is no homework until third grade, but by fifth and sixth grade, there is significant work required in writing, math, and other relevant topics.

Horizons takes the time to teach students about more than just academics, including community involvement (such as volunteering that is age-appropriate during the school year) and being a good steward of the environment. I think this is a real strength of the school.

Overall, we feel so fortunate to have our two children at Horizons. The teachers are excellent and incredibly committed. The curriculum is rich and diverse, and offers far more than just the Common Core. The extracurricular programs and other special programs such as outdoor ed and winter sports really make this a special place for kids to grow and learn.

Our family had more negative than positive experiences at Horizons. Our child was placed in a class room with numerous children that should have been receiving special services, but that Horizons could not (or would not) offer. We had a terrible start to Kindergarten due to the mix of students in the class, inability of the teacher to cope, and unwillingness of the principal to take action. Resources go to "specials" such as winter-sports, retreats for teachers, outdoor education for students, and other interesting projects, but we have been told numerous times that the school does not have "resources" for 2E, TAG, or children with SPD. This is born out by the school inappropriately placing these kids in the classroom and distracting from the education of others, or by asking the kids to leave after a failed trial at mainstream. In addition, we have personally experienced: mismanagement of time and resources; too much screen-time in the classroom; lack of supervision at recess (even with 6-8 graders on the playground); and poor communication with the principal.

We currently have 3 kids enrolled at Horizons and absolutely love the school! The teachers are great and really go out of their way to teach to the needs of each child. It is a very positive learning environment and everyone I have talked to that has had students move on to High School has commented on how well prepared they were. The school size is just right, with small enough classes (~40 students/year) to not be overwhelming, and still enough peers to find good friends.

We left this school because we moved out of state. Prior to our move, we debated pulling our child out if we were going to remain local. I agree with the negative reviews regarding how well my child learned here. Teacher communication is POOR which is not good if you have a struggling child. You are not aware there are issues. They spend a great deal of time on worldly projects, which are nice in small doses, but my child couldn't do math! There are small class sizes with paras; but it didn't do anything for my child. We now go to an excellent neighborhood school and my child has THRIVED in the traditional setting; he also has more friends and comes home happier. The school touts community but I didn't get that from the parents, only rude looks, condescending attitudes, and daily attempts to hit my car at drop off/pick up. The administration is well intentioned and the teachers are wonderfully sweet, but it just did not work well for us. Really examine the school and what you are getting into; especially if it will work for your child. Don't just rely on the NO. 1 status and reputation.

Others have said on here that "parent involvement is extremely high". It's true: Horizons is run by the parents who are pretty much calling the shots. The trouble is that these parents aren't educators. They don't know about how to educate kids and this results in skewed priorities. Even the 1-4th graders have "projects" on things like Egypt and Nelson Mandela. Which is nice except that Horizons doesn't care much about things like reading, writing, spelling and math skills. My kid has really failed to learn much of anything practical - and this is a common problem as I understand it. Lesson learned: high-strung Boulder parents are not qualified to operate a school. If you care about your child's future, get him/her into a real school and leave Horizons for the freakish helicopter parents and their children, you'll be so glad you did.

Horizons is "just fine". Principal is "fine". Teachers are "fine". So if you're looking for a "fine school" to drop your kids off in the morning and pick them up in the afternoon, Horizons is a school that will work for you. And while the teachers may think otherwise, outside of smaller classroom size, Horizons is really not that much different than other other local school options (teachers are in charge, parents are asked to bring food, support field trips etc). So, if you don't happen to be selected by the open enrollment process, don't sweat it.

We have one child currently enrolled and another who graduated last year. Our children have had very positive experiences at Horizons. The are both very different kids, so it's been great to see them grow academically and socially each in their own unique way at Horizons. The teachers really bring out the best in their students and the Principal genuinely cares about the pupils. Our child who currently attends the school often comes home telling us about all of the interesting things learned in science and social studies. As parents, we too are learning new things! Small class sizes, opportunity to be taught at the right level (i.e. not holding kids back if they're advanced in a subject), creative projects and unique exploration classes (junk-to-jewelry, CO2 model car building, creating a renaissance ship, tennis, skateboarding, knitting, volunteering and more). I feel like my kids are more well-rounded because of Horizons.

The two negative reviews look like they were written by the same person who was bitter about their child's experience at the school. I have been involved with the school for a decade and my two children spent the last five-six years at this wonderful learning environment. There is so many positives to say about the school--engaged and dedicated teachers who put students first, supportive parent community, the small class sizes, the emphasis on self-directed learning and community contribution. This school was suppose to be our dream school. We felt so lucky to get a seat through the lottery system. It turned out to be a disaster. Good luck finding a school that truly teaches to multiple intelligences. This one doesn't.

Horizons proved disastrous for our child, who attended all through elementary (K-5th). Lack of organization, no teacher accountability -always blaming students for lack of preparation and follow-up. Homework was not properly assigned, and when it was, it was poorly explained to the children. They were lost and did not know what they were supposed to be doing. It is filthy and disorganized. Do not send your child to this school unless you are willing to hire private tutors to do the work the teachers don't do.

Do not recommend this school. It came highly recommended, and I also liked the test scores. My son struggled in this school, he was bored and not at all challenged. Mixing grades also seemed to exacerbate the disorganization in the classroom and with parent-teacher communications. There were definitely more bumps in the road than anything else. We changed schools.

There is no way to express our love and appreciation for this school! My son has high-functioning autism and is in his fourth year of attendance (he attended one year at a district elementary school and that was a terrible experience). Teachers and staff have gone out of their way to not only modify content and teaching style to accommodate his needs, but to truly understand and embrace him as an individual. Teaching to a child's strengths is common place here, as is the celebration of each person's uniqueness. The low teacher to student ration and multi-age classes allow for teachers to really get to know their students and tailor learning that is just not possible at other schools. There have been some bumps in the road, but even those have been positive experiences. Staff has been more than willing to meet in a very timely manner to discuss what is in the best interest of my child, and then follow through with those changes immediately. At Horizons the parents are seen as a valuable part of the team. My child feels valued and respected here, as do I.

I wish that all children had the chance to attend a school like Horizons. Two of my three kids have attended, one who is twice exceptional (and not well served at his previous school), and one who started kindergarten here and has no particular learning challenges. Both thrived in this environment. The small class sizes, dedicated, creative staff, and involved parents make this a very unique place. The academics here are top notch, but more important are the lessons on communication, compassion, service, and exploration. Highlights include "dream homework" projects, outdoor education, service work at Community Table, the plays/musicals, and student-led conferences. This type of education on a BVSD budget requires some creativity on the part of the school, and some sweat equity from the families. How do we get small class sizes with the same (or lower) per pupil funding? Parents are expected to clean classrooms and volunteer in a variety of ways. This ranges from being on committees or in the classroom, to writing grants and making costumes. We do a lot of fundraising. The extra effort is well worth the rewards.

Be careful sending your child here if they might be gifted or 2 E. Our child we feel was damaged at this school due to lack of understanding of this population of learners and a dysfunctional special ed. team. We had a horrible experience. Not at all recommended.
