After more than ten years as a parent at St. John’s Episcopal School in Homestead, I can say with certainty that the school has lost its way. What was once a supportive, structured, and academically sound environment has become a disorganized, poorly led institution that prioritizes internal control over student growth and family involvement. The principal frequently makes major decisions without consulting parents, including a complete overhaul of the curriculum after COVID. This change, done without warning or transition planning, set many students back academically—mine included. My daughter’s kindergarten teacher during the pandemic could barely speak English, and when I raised this serious issue, the administration dismissed it. I now have to pay out of pocket for tutoring to address the gaps caused by that year. Communication is practically nonexistent. Last-minute messages via WhatsApp are the norm, and important dates or events are often shared with no time for parents to respond or plan. There’s also a total lack of enrichment: no meaningful field trips, limited hands-on learning, and events like Earth Day are reduced to simply watching a movie. The graduation banquet was a disaster. Parents paid for a formal event with high hopes of celebrating the students. Instead, there were no speeches, no recognition, and the principal’s only contribution was suggesting a game of musical chairs. It was disorganized and disrespectful to the students and families who invested years into that school. Despite ongoing financial requests from the school, there’s no evidence of that money being invested in improving facilities, academics, or student experiences. Perhaps the most laughable example of the school’s dysfunction is the fact that their sign labels the institution as “St. John’s Episcopal School – Second Grade on google,” even though it serves grades kindergarten through eighth don’t believe me look it up right now it’s been like that, but I think about three years.. It’s a small but glaring example of the lack of attention to detail and overall disorganization. If they can’t even get their own name and grade range right, how can parents trust them to manage their children’s education? I’ve since moved my youngest daughter to a new school that offers more for less money—better academics, consistent communication, educational field trips, and a supportive environment. I only wish I had made the change sooner.

This “school” is horrible and I am not even sure how they are still open. I sent my son her for VPK and ended up pulling him out after 7 weeks. Immediately after school started I kept getting complaints about my son from his teacher. Little things about how he wasn’t sitting still etc. Well he’s 4 years old and has no interest in school that’s why he’s there to learn.
My son started telling me his teacher hated him and would yell at him.
I had called the school and spoke with the principal. She was just as nasty as the teacher. She was pretty much implying all the kids should be quiet almost like robots.
After the weeks of harassment and complaints from the school I ended up pulling him out. I ended up putting him in another school for VPK and received no complaints and he’s so happy.

The overall environment of the school is perfect and secluded and provides a safe environment. All the students, of all ages and grades know each other and are friendly towards one another. I had gone to that school since the beginning (starting from pre- school all the way up to eighth grade and now I am in high school) and I have experienced this firsthand as a graduating student. Although, academic wise, the school claims to be the 'best' and highly advanced, it is NOT and provides the basics of algebra during middle school, whereas other schools are more advanced and onto more advanced algebra or even geometry which is a ninth grade course. In conclusion, the school is highly appreciated and praised for its "homey" environment although the standardized academics are not what are claimed to be. My earlier years in St.John's Episcopal were to be cherished and still are but, many graduates including myself were behind in academics when starting ninth grade in a public school who's entity is completely different than the small school. I for one, was a straight A student in St.John's and the academics in high school are very different than what I had learned in St.John's so it is taking time to adjust to the new system. Parents, this school is a nice option if you are looking for a safe environment for your child but towards middle school, the academics are repeated and not continuous and your child may have an issue adjusting to a larger environment with a completely different system in high school (or any public school). Best of luck.

The reason as to why I feel neutral towards the school developing honesty, integrity, and fairness in its students is because of specific students that are being allowed into the school. Although attending church is mandatory for the students daily for approximately 30 minutes, you would assume that the children and parents would not be of 'low class' (I have no other way to put this - not intended to be an offensive comment towards anyone in particular) but the majority of the people allowed into the school are not the best type of people. Meaning that they do not respect the rules strictly enforced by the school and are disrespectful in numerous ways. Many of the teachers tend to play favorites. Also many of the students tend to degrade one another discreetly although this is commonly done privately. I am speaking from a personal and firsthand point of view this is not anything of a rumor for I had witnessed it because I had attended the school.

St. John's is committed to be a school of academic excellence. It strives to be a "Level Above the Rest". There is great emphasis on Math and Science so that our students are prepared to enroll in STEM classes when they graduate and enter high school. Algebra 1 and Physical Science are two high school level classes offered to our eight graders. Small class sizes and advanced curriculum make our school the best choice for academic success.

St Johns is an awsome school, the gold standard educational institution that educators both present and future need to follow as an example. The 1 star rating thats posted against thier board is undeserving of thier outstanding efforts and was meant for a Charter school nearby. I recommend that parents enroll thier children in this school.
