The Galloway School

I went to Galloway from K–12, so this comes from a very long firsthand experience. There are definitely positives: it is a kind, supportive environment, the teachers generally care, and the school does a good job making students feel seen as individuals. I understand why a lot of Buckhead families are drawn to it.

That said, looking back as an adult, I do not feel like it prepared me especially well for real life. There was a lot of emphasis on “be your best self,” which sounds good on paper, but in my experience there was less emphasis on discipline, toughness, accountability, and the kind of academic rigor that actually helps once you leave a protected school environment. It helped get me into Alabama, but I was not especially well prepared once I got there, and that became obvious pretty quickly.

Now I work in residential real estate, and while I do fine, it is not exactly the kind of challenging or deeply fulfilling professional path I once thought a school like Galloway was preparing me for. It is a very relationship-driven job with long hours, and if I am being honest, a lot of where I landed had more to do with family connections than with any real edge the school gave me. That is the part I think prospective families should think about. Galloway was good at making students feel comfortable and affirmed. I am less convinced it was good at pushing them hard enough to thrive on their own later.

Galloway is amazing. We visited numerous private schools in the Atlanta area before choosing Galloway. The teaching methods are incredible, they push "experiential learning", so learning is ALWAYS taking place, whether on the playground or in the classroom. The vibe is so welcoming and laid back, none of the snobbery of some of the other top private schools. I hope our little one will stay until she graduates from high school!

We absolutely love Galloway! It's the best decision we've made for our son. It's a nurturing and supportive environment that is also academically rigorous and offers a wonderful list of courses and extracurricular activities. If you're looking for a well-rounded education for your child, we highly recommend Galloway!

New leadership is trying to change the school. The middle school is well run. The high school is a disaster.

The only way learning differences are supported is through qualifying for extra time. Beyond that most of the teachers either don't care or expect your kid to perform at the same level as the other kids with the extra time.

My kids were repeatedly bullied at Galloway. They constantly talk about bullying, yet there is a lot of conflict between kids that is at times reinforced by teachers in the classroom. Many high school teachers play favorites, making this dynamic worse.

While there are many good teachers at Galloway, there are also many very incompetent teachers who have no business in a classroom. They are truly a detriment to the entire school. Many good teachers in the high school have been poached by other schools, and replaced by terrible teachers. Other teachers have been teaching there forever and are complacent and could care less about students.

This school has a lot of very diverse cliques and lacks an overall sense of community. They constantly preach messages of inclusion, but it's a meaningless facade. At times, the school prioritizes kids with severe emotional problems, which alienates a lot of other kids. To get attention here, make sure you present with severe emotional issues.

Too much homework seems to revolve around watching you tube videos at home, which just opens pandora's box for kids to waste time watching other videos.

My review is for the high school. I am extremely disappointed by Galloway. It's a smoke and mirrors exerience with little substance and many weak and unqualified teachers who spend most of the class time talking about their own political views and trying to brainwash kids. I had a positive experience in the Middle School. The teachers are generally very good and care about the kids.

Galloway sets high expectations in a warm and supportive environment. Teachers are creative and help kids to love learning and focus on their strengths and struggles as opposed to grades. Students are comfortable being themselves and don't feel a pressure to "fit in." There are athletes, musicians, actors, kids interested in technology, etc and they all appreciate each other's gifts. You send your child to Galloway knowing they will be appropriately stretched and that they will be looked out for.

I cannot say enough great things about Galloway. Our son started last year in high school and is completely thriving. Where most high schools have major cliques and popularity contests, Galloway is accepting of all students with their mindset of everyone is an individual. Great for the right student (self motivated, independent and self advocate) but if this describes your child, then look no further. We could not ask for a more supportive administration and faculty. Bravo, this school does everything right!

In the few years we've had a student at Galloway, we've found it to be an excellent educational experience. Great efforts are made to integrate new students into the existing community of students and faculty. It was amazing to see how quickly the school came up to speed with understanding our student's strengths and weaknesses, and worked with us to develop a plan for their education. We feel much of this success has been due to the size of the school and the strength of the faculty. Any concerns for the future center around changes underway at Galloway. Increased enrollment levels portend larger class sizes, and together with a new technology initiative, risks pushing excellent educators away who do not adapt well to these new demands. Galloway is already one of the more expensive schools in Atlanta. Increasing tuition costs, with the potential of diminishing value MAY make justifying a Galloway education more difficult in the future. There is an abundance of excellence at Galloway which provides us with confidence the coming changes will not diminish the core value of a Galloway education. We still highly recommend Galloway.

This is our second year at Galloway, and our first year for our middle schooler. Both children had WONDERFUL transitions into the school and community thanks to the teachers, administration, and families. We have loved the approach to learning and the curriculum in both early and middle learning. The school's new 4-D learning approach is exceptional. Both of our kids love going to school here, and are learning and growing in ways we can see and observe. We couldn't be happier with our choice!

We are finishing up our first year here in early learning. What a truly amazing place this is. My son has blossomed in this environment. The teachers have been very in touch with his specific needs and learning style, and have given him all of the tools he needs to keep moving positively on his journey of learning. I really like tehe collaborative style, as well. The teachers have made me and my husband very much a part of the team. I have also been impressed with the way the school is managed. There is an innovative spirit that pervades everything that is going on. While it is not my place to question the negative reviewers here, my sense is that they have had very unfortunate, but isolated negative experiences. Everyone I know has a very positive opinion of Galloway.

As we conclude our 5th year at Galloway I am only energized by all of the positive changes and dynamic programming that goes on at Galloway. My kids NEVER seem to amaze me with the things they learn at school. People make "issue" over the change in administration, but I believe it has been only for the better and the Galloway Community has AMAZING things to look forward to. We couldn't be ANY happier! This is truly the perfect school for my 2 VERY different children! (And for me too!!) What a loving community!

Our family has been at Galloway for 15 years and the school and community have been true gifts to us. Galloway teachers understand education - that it's more than just imparting information. With small classrooms and lessons that engage students across the curriculum, Galloway teachers have inspired a love of learning in my children. Additionally, we are fortunate that Galloway's value set mirrors our family's value set. Galloway is a school with a moral compass - students are taught to respect themselves and others, to be responsible members of a school community, and to understand that actions have consequences. I am grateful that my children have received a terrific education and are becoming people of character in this special school community.

We are finishing our third year at Galloway and I can't say enough positive things about the school, the staff, the families, and my child's experience. She is learning things so much earlier than I did and more than just learning facts, she is learning how to apply these facts. As a mom who does work outside of the home some, I also especially appreciate the community feel of the school. The parents seem grounded and truly vested in their kids' education. We are so happy to be a part of this community.

We have been at Galloway for 7yrs. I feel very fortunate to be a part of this wonderful community. As there are no perfect people, there are no perfect schools. What I can sincerely say is that every year has been amazing for my son. His teachers set high expectations for him. They have nurtured and stretched him to be his best academically and as a good citizen. His ERB scores have him in the top percentile, so they must be doing something right! The administration is always willing to listen and respond to the needs of the students and community. My family is very happy here.

We couldn't be happier with The Galloway School. We are in our third year at Galloway and our daughter was just accepted into the Pre-K program. My son has been challenged, supported and excited by his education so far. The teachers and staff are experts at their craft. I feel fortunate that such a place exists for my children to attend. I wish I could have gone to a school like Galloway. The support of the community at Galloway has been wonderful and I feel lucky to be a part of it.

The Galloway School was our first choice of schools over several highly regarded private schools in the metropolitan Atlanta area. We chose Galloway for our child because of the school's emphasis on critical thinking. After being a part of Galloway for two years now, we can already see our child's use of Galloway's critical thinking methods as well as the development of a true love of learning. We have also discovered and become a part a diverse community that embraces challenges, change and achievement. We feel very fortunate to be a part of the Galloway community.

My senior was just accepted to her dream college from Galloway, and has other choices as well (thank you Galloway college counselors!). As hard as it is to think about her graduation, we are forever grateful that she had the opportunity to be at this warm, nurturing yet challenging school. She learned to love learning, to express herself, to respect herself and others, and to be independent. From her first days in EL where she was encouraged to be curious, to ML where her unique talents were appreciated and she learned collaboration, to UL where she learned to really challenge herself academically, to write and present well, and to get involved in her community, she has loved this school. The teachers here are top-notch and love what they do. The administration is forward-thinking and interested in what is developmentally appropriate and the best for each child. No place could have prepared her better for the challenges of college, but she also had opportunities to learn to be an engaged citizen. We are so grateful she has had a chance to be at this very special school!

Galloway is a joyful community. My children hate to miss even a single day of school. The Head of School is a remarkable leader who models lifelong learning, responsible citizenship, and genuine compassion every day. The faculty and staff are innovative, and encourage the children to reach for excellence in everything they do. Most of all, Galloway is a place where every day is not only a stepping stone to college and life beyond school, but it is also a moment in time valued for itself. At Galloway, the process of learning is in itself fun, exciting, and worthwhile. When my children bolt out of the car every morning and run into school, I wish I could go with them.

I only wish that I had a school like Galloway when I was a student. My children have been challenged academically, nurtured and respected by their teachers, been on competitive sports teams and learned teamwork and collaboration. They have learned to write well and express themselves. Because they felt respected by their teachers and peers, they have been confident taking academic risks and challenges. They have a great love of learning and remain curious about the world around them. As they progressed from Early to Middle to Upper Learning, the transitions were seamless and the workload appropriate. The teachers truly care about the students and go the extra mile to ensure their success not only for their particular class, but for the rest of the students' lives.

Our family is about to complete our ninth year at Galloway. Our children have grown up there. It is our home away from home. Worst school ever! Public school is a much better option. Don't waste your money here. Head of school, principals, chief financial officer are all terrible and have no business being responsible for the education of our children. There is no curriculum or accountability by teachers or expected of students. They do a good job of "selling" the school during admissions, but apparently, admissions does not know what is going on in the classroom. I had to learn the hard way but the happiest day of my life when my child was accepted into another private school.

Galloway has been a life-changing experience for our son. I can truly say we have LOVED the middle school years because of Galloway's teaching staff, the other students and the administration. They are in tune with the needs of the kids and their families. This school has honestly turned even more into a joke with the new headmaster and everything she's implemented. Just look at the website and see for yourself. I'm pulling my kids as soon as they're done with the early learning program. At least at the early learning level, the teachers seem good, but there just seems to be a big agenda behind the whole school.

At the lower levels, the school is managed quite well. Perhaps because the Head of School has small children attending. In fact, as her older one gets closer to Middle School at Galloway, it's clear that is where the money and innovation is heading. At the Upper Level, they are trying to compete with traditional prep schools--which is so NOT what Elliott Galloway intended when he founded the school. Parents pay a lot of money and kids work hard. Let's embrace change, but stand by the mission of Galloway which doesn't include being like "everyone else" in Atlanta. Personally, I can't wait until our child is out of this school. Graduation day will be the happiest day of my life.

I am a senior at Galloway, and my favorite part about Galloway is the teachers. Because of their enthusiasm for their subjects, I have developed a love of learning. The reason I work hard in school is not to get perfect grades; I work hard because my teachers have helped sparked my desire to push myself to my full potential. I have never been a math person, but after two years with a particular math teacher, I genuinely enjoy going to math class. My teacher is always eager to answer questions or spend an extra day on a topic just to make sure we all have a solid grasp of the subject. I could write pages about my teachers, but simply put, the teachers at Galloway are accessible, encouraging, and overall fun, good people. There's a place for everyone socially and academically at Galloway so long as students enter with a positive attitude and a desire to improve. I'm about to go to college next year, and even though it's nerve racking, Galloway has successfully prepared me for the next step in my life. I would be lying, however, if I said I won't miss it. There's no place like home? More like there's no place like Galloway because honestly, Galloway is, and always will be, my home.

I graduated from Galloway in 2009 and went there for almost my entire life. There was never a point in my school career where I wished I went to a different school. Upper Learning helped prepare me for college, especially when it came to writing. I found that I was one of the few students in my freshman English class who knew how to write a successful essay, thanks to Galloway. The teachers are so kind and understanding, and your peers are actually the best people on this earth. I am still best friends with the girls I went to school with in Early, Middle and Upper Learning. I truly felt like the Galloway community wanted me to succeed and always challenged me to do my best.

Galloway is a fabulous school and allows our children to learn in a fun environment, thus allowing them to retain the information that is taught to them. I would not classify it as a school for "different" kids, however, a school for kids who are accepted for who they are. They are not expected to fit into a box. The leadership is exemplary and the kids are well adjusted. I would highly recommend this school for a family who is looking for their child to be well educated, confident, kind and happy!

I feel so blessed to have found The Galloway School 7 years ago... and it just keeps getting better. The new Head of School has taken something great and begun an improvement program which has already made significant impact. The strong culture has been re-energized and the future looks bright! The staff and teaching changes are just what the school needed and the internal and external communication has improved ten-fold. The leadership is aligning and I am excited to enter this next chapter in the amazing history of this unique, cutting-edge school. While I wouldn't say that the school was broken... it definitely had hit a plateau. It is fun to begin the climb again and the students, faculty, and staff are rising to the challenge. Graduating from this place was the happiest day of my life, not because I was actually graduating but because I never had to go back to this place ever again. This school epitomizes the "participation trophy generation." For instance, this school has an award ceremony and students who were literally failing school get awards. Meanwhile, top students are heavily discouraged from taking challenging schedules. Mediocrity is often accepted. There is also just not a focus on academics enough at this school. Many teachers think that they can get away with not teaching material relevant to SAT subject tests, AP's, etc. just because they are a private school. When I arrived at college, I was struggling during the first year to catch up with students who received proper college prep educations. Galloway can count on me not to donate a single penny in the future.

Our family loves the Galloway School! How often in life can you say that the promises in the sales pitch were not only met but exceeded? The school promises learning in a socially and emotionally safe environment where the whole community is enthusiastic and supporting of each individual child's interests and creativity. My daughter absolutely loves school. I love that. I also want to comment on the diversity graph on this web page. Although my daughter is one of the children of color that would be counted in this designation, it is important to me to know that our community is supportive of differences, no matter what they are. We have a deep and truly diverse community that is welcoming, cohesive, curious, thoughtful and respectful. This school and community is growing children with more than just factual knowledge we are building human beings that have depth-of-character. That is what I REALLY want for my family.

Galloway is a fantastic school. My son attended from PreK until 12th grade. He formed many wonderful friendships - with his teachers and classmates, was nurtured and valued as an individual, had a demanding and interesting curriculum, was exposed to a wide variety of extracurriculars, excelled in the performing arts, wrote across the curriculum (research papers in chemistry, original research projects in biology), was challenged in all of his classes, and really found out who he was. He is now a college sophomore, is passionate about his field of study, and was VERY WELL prepared for college. If you want your child to be a robotic test taker/grade grubber this is not the place for you. If you want your child to be passionate, authentic, committed, well read and educated, this is the place for you.

We have three students at Galloway and the facts speak for themselves: 1. The Galloway School has the right balance - there is focus on academics, accountability, athletics, community, and integrity. It really is an environment created for learning; 2. There are a lot of great schools with strong academic programs to choose from in Atlanta. What Galloway offers, in addition to strong academics, exceptional arts and a wide variety of outstanding sports teams (including ultimate Frisbee, by the way!) is gentle guidance and instruction in how to be a good person. How to care for yourself, your friends, and your community. How to care for the world. We feel lucky to be a part of such a wonderful school!

What an amazing school in every aspect. Its our 5th year at Galloway and each year just gets better and better. The school's philosophy of child centered learning is so beneficial for both of my children, who are very different learners. The teachers and the principal have been so accommodating to my oldest child, who we found out, has some mild learning difficulties. He has overcome those issues thanks to his amazing teachers, who just truly are the best. The Galloway community is very warm and friendly - I tell my children all the time how lucky they are that they go to such an awesome school.

I have two kids in Middle Learning. I have found Galloway to be an excellent match for our family. The community at Galloway is stronger than any of the other area public schools that I have experienced. This was evident from my first tour of the school - the smiles on the faces of the kids in the hallways and in the classrooms said it all. Academics in middle learning are also very strong, with a large number of "rock star" teachers. It is true that there has been some leadership instability in recent years. That has hopefully been resolved with recent hires in Middle Learning and a new Head of School. I think the current leadership is excellent - experienced administrators with philosophies in line with Galloway's vision and culture. My children have had a great experience at Galloway. They haven't experienced any of the bullying others have referenced. What cases I know of from other parents have been dealt with responsibly by the school. Both of my children have had good experiences with extra-curriculars, and have been challenged in classes. This is especially true for my gifted son. I would recommend Galloway to any family.

The early learning teachers are phenomenal. There is a real commitment, sophistication, and interest in child development. They understand how to provide structure for children, while allowing them to follow their interests to fuel their excitement to learn. If you walk through the halls, you will see lots of happy children and attentive teachers. Everything about the school is centered around respecting your community and the larger world, which is really inspiring to see in action. Also, the new head of school is hands down one of the most impressive educational leaders in the country (and we have high standards coming from NYC). Our son, who is in kindergarten, has never been happier to go to school. He loves being involved in the soccer team, science and chess clubs. He feels safe, loved, challenged and inspired at Galloway. What more can you ask for as a parent?

Amazing staff, wonderful family support, creative, fun approach to teaching. I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience has been at Galloway! My kids are always happy to go to school...and are disappointed when there is a day off. They feel respected and independent, which makes all human beings feel good. There is a lot of flexibility at Galloway, and, still, there are high standards to be your best self...a hard balance to strike. We are so grateful that this school exists. It seems to instill all the values we believe in without unduly stressing our kids out.

We have been very pleased with our selection of Galloway for our children. They have had a great experience socially, athletically and acadmically and people are always amazed at how mature they are. Galloway has a rigorous AP curriculum and great college matriculations, but the journey to getting there does not have the peer pressure, cliques and college counseling directives that are present at many of the other private schools. From Galloway, you can get into a great college and finish high school with confidence and maturity, but also enjoy the path to getting there.

Galloway is a wonderful place for kids and families. We are a small school where students, faculty and familes are partners in education. Decisions are made based on what is best for the student - this school is flexible and caring in the extreme. The academics are solid, participation in extracurricular activities is open to all - even to the point of high schoolers being able to choose multiple activities that would be mutually exclusive) in other schools, A student's experience at this school depends on the student - there is no cookie cutter approach at Galloway. While not the place for all (for example, if your student needs structure across the board) - a motivated, able student will find unparalled freedom and self expression; Each and every student will be supported by caring teachers and staff. If you like the idea of kids being partners in their own education you will love this place! And a nice relaxed atmosphere too!

Galloway is what you make of it. I began here as a sophomore in high school after attending another well-known private school. At first, I was fooled by the lenience and lack of rules. I didn't do homework and didn't take all of my classes seriously, but in second semester of that year, the ideals of the school finally sunk in. I was allowed to wear what I wanted, go where I wanted, and do what I wanted so that I could learn responsibility for myself instead of being babied through high school. I began getting E's (A's) in all of my classes and ambitiously began taking dance classes even though Galloway's freedom allowed me to find myself before being on my own in college. There are still students who slack off, don't finish their work, and don't care about their learning but the majority genuinely love coming to school ever day and consider themselves all life-long learners as Elliott Galloway had intended all of us to be. He once said, "When you love yourself, you have the inspiration for your own excellence." I am so thankful that I decided to come to a school that encourages growth in all aspects of the students' lives. My life will never be the same.

We have had an amazing experience so far at Galloway. Our children are currently enrolled in the Early Learning program, and we feel so fortunate to be a part of the amazing community of teachers, students and families. Galloway definitely caters to the individual needs of each child. We have a child who, at a very early age, has shown some amazing academic gifts far exceeding his peers. Galloway is working diligently to accommodate his academic needs while also allowing him the important opportunity to socialize and play with children his own age. In addition, we love the warm and nurturing environment found at Galloway, the interaction among the children across all grades, and the focus that Galloway places on the development of the whole child. We cannot say enough great things!

For the most part, Galloway simply caters to just the middle of the pack and the lower tier students. I can tell you this from firsthand experience. There are also frivolous restrictions on the amount of AP classes students can take. Teachers overall are hit or miss. Some are outstanding, while others teach poorly and give hard tests on material not covered in class or in textbooks. I think all of this stems from the school's philosophy of anti-academic competitiveness. If you have a run-of-the-mill student, Galloway is probably a great school. However, if you are seriously dreaming of attending Ivies/Stanford/MIT, DO NOT come to Galloway. You will be VERY disappointed when your college decisions come in.

It doesn't get any better than The Galloway School. I have 2 children that have/are attending. One just graduated high school from Galloway after beginning there when he was 3 years old. He is very well prepared for college as a freshman. He knows what he wants to do and is prepared to get there thanks to Galloway. My other child is happily enjoying Early Learning and is receiving a highly challenging education in a non-stressful environment that nurtures him while challenging him to be the best that he can be. Galloway is an exceptional school from age 3 to graduation.

Our son has been at Galloway since kindergarten, and will start in Upper Learning there this Fall. He has received a top-notch education that continues to challenge him in every area. More importantly, he has received that education in an environment that inculcates values of community, respect, individuality, and creativity. We could not be more pleased with the school, the calibre of our son's friends, or the quality of our son's work at Galloway. If you are looking for a rigorous, student-centered learning environment that nurtures inquisitiveness and keeps learning - at all levels - fun and exciting, I highly recommend Galloway.

THe Galloway school is an excelent establishment that has allowed me to flourish not only as a student, but as an athlete as well. For one to properly judge Galloway, he/she must be integrated with the school. As a current student I can confidently make the statement: those who fail to succeed at Galloway simply cannot manage the rigors presented by this school.

Galloway is a great size of school for me. The teaching staff is supportive and they will help you in all your endeavors. The academics are challenging, but if you try hard and use all the available resources, you can be successful. More students should check this school out. Its approach to learning is phenomenal.
