The Howard School has been transformative for our family. From admissions to the classroom and beyond, the staff took the time to understand our child's unique needs and provide the support he needed to succeed, and we have been astounded by his growth.

Our son attends The Howard School and has been there for three years. We absolutely love it. He has dyslexia and a language processing disability, and we truly couldnt have imagined a better place for him. He is flourishing emotionally, socially, and academically. Its been a wonderful experience for our family, and I highly recommend the school.

The Howard School has been life changing for our son. We are amazed by the progress that he has made in only one year of attending. The teachers and staff are all so wonderful and understanding. It truly feels like we are all one the same team, working together to ensure what is best for him. I cannot begin to explain just how wonderful every encounter and experience we have is. If your child has learning difficulties, I strongly encourage that you consider Howard!

Howard is a great place for students struggling. Staff is nice as long as you are to them and are there to help with anything needed. Only downsides are that some teachers take forever (can be over a month) to grade work and in comparison to other school, you will be about a grade behind learning wise. Its a bit pricey to attend, but if you can afford it and your child needs more help with school, its a great place.

I would not recommend you send your child here if you are interested in education.
It was once a great school but in the past 2 years it has collapsed due to a lack of leadership and accountability. The school pushes an agenda that you may or may not like. Even as a "neutral" in all things; I have seen both teachers and leadership punish and single out students who disagree rather than discuss the matter with them.

Many of the teachers do not have degrees in the subject matter they teach. I have experienced having to explain subject to be taught to a teacher before they taught it because they have don't have a clue as to what they are talking about and unfortunately most of the students know it. This is of course when most of the teachers show up as many barely come to work on a regular basis.
If you are looking for your child's grades then do not bother. In many cases it takes months for some teachers to even enter a single grade or provide feedback. Leadership has gone so far as to tell teachers who "inherit" a absent teacher's classroom(or more than likely one that simply quits halfway through the year) to "make up" the grades.
Most of the teachers who care about the students or academic honesty have moved on but there are a few decent ones left. Staff who value honesty with parents are students are bullied into leaving or simply give up.
Parents who give large amounts of money to the school do not have to worry about their children who are allowed to run amok and bully other children. For the large amount that is asked of parents to pay the school is simply not worth the price.
The school is a very expensive daycare.

The wifi is so bad because they use a signal blocker and limit our phone usage. One day I had to call somebody about a job opportunity and because of the blocker, I wasn't able to get the job.

An amazing school equipped with the necessary resources to support these special kids. These students receive tailored instruction and access to assistive technology, which initially attracted us to this institution. This school isn't exclusively for students with dyslexia; it embraces all learners with language-based differences. During our time at the school, we came to appreciate the vital role it plays in fostering social and emotional development. The students and teachers alike are incredibly kind, creating a sense of family within the school community.

My daughter attended this school for 3 years, which in the end did her more damage than good. Due to the fact that kids with more heavy disabilities attend this school, if your child has mild learning differences like ADHD, your child actually falls behind to accommodate such kids. Additionally, they push political correctness, and racial issues before the child's mental health. Oftentimes, my daughter was singled out when it was another child's fault. One such time was on her birthday and after the truth came out, not a single thing was done to make amends, destroying her day.

They also did not prepare my child at all for moving to high school.

Do not send your children here if they have mild challenges. There are better options in terms of schools. Even considering Academics Plus, or Lindamood Bell to assist them for preparation to transition to regular school, is a much better option than this.

They don't overburden kids with a lot of unnecessary busy work. My kid has never read or written so much in his entire school career as he is this year. Somehow they've gotten him turned on to books. Fantastic!

We caught my son's dyslexia late in the game and his confidence really took a hit. The teachers and staff at The Howard School have made all the difference. He's a different kid. He loves going to middle school here and he's thriving under their direction both academically and personally. Atlanta is so lucky to have this school in our mix!

The Howard School has been the perfect fit for our daughter and for our family. The small school community is warm and involved, the administration and teachers very approachable and the way the school nurtures the whole student is very well balanced. Our daughter is actually loving middle school!

I sent an e-mail to the director of admissions over a year ago asking....
Do you only serve students with language based learning disabilities or do you serve students with ALL learning differences?
Here is my second question. The school description says "Language Learning Disbilities and Learning Differences." Do you honestly believe that any reasonable parent or educator would see this as anything other than UNPROFESSIONALLY REDUNDANT? If your focus is on Dyslexia and the like then you should drop the part that says Learning Differences, however if your focus is on all learning differences then you should drop the part that says "Language Learning Disabilities." Your description would be like a psychiatric institute saying "We serve people with personality disorders and mental illnesses." Or the sign on the Stone Mountain Walk up Trail that says "No Dogs or Pets Allowed on the Mountain." It doesn't make sense.
Here is my third question. Is it true that they do not allow the high school students to put locks on their lockers? What does that teach them about responsibility? And are the people who are setting these policies putting locks on their office doors?
Here is my fourth question. I have read that you have had famous people with Dyslexia such as Henry Winkler or Russ Cosby make speeches at graduation about dyslexia. Have you ever had a speaker about ADD?
Here is my fifth question. Somebody once told me that a former student suggested to the high school principal to invest in Advanced Placement Level Classes once the school got a new campus and this person was told "These are students with learning disabilities." This is an ignorant and abhorrent statement. Millions of people with learning disabilities have achieved academic greatness and higher education. Academic support for kids with learning disabilities goes as high as the Ivy League. Does this person represent the entire school philosophy? Because if the answer is yes then not only will I not send my child to school there but I will warn other parents with ADD kids about the danger's of this school's philosophy.
And finally my sixth and final question. Was it the dream of Marian Howard to help students with all types of learning challenges or just those suffering from dyslexia?
She refused to give an answer in writing and just asked me to come visit her. Sign of cowardice.

That's what the Howard School was founded upon, but now it's just a school for children with "Language Based Learning Differences" they do not care about kids who have a non language based learning difference. Marion Howard's Philosophy was "For Children who have difficulty learning" NOT "Language is what we're all about!"

Howard School administration and teachers really strive to look individually at every child to uncover their specific learning needs. Then they use a team approach to implement strategies to empower each child in their learning environmet. Our daughter came to Howard a non-reader with low self esteem. She now reads and has learned to self advocate. We are so pleased with the progress she has made while at Howard.

Our daughter struggled not only with schoolwork, but with poor self-esteem from repeated difficulties at school before transferring to Howard. The Howard school helped her become who she is today. She is happy, more confident and motived to do well in school. Knowing that she has the support of her Howard family has not only enriched her learning at school, but her home & social enviroments. The homework philosophy at The Howard School aligns with the type of students attending. These kids struggle with learning throughout the day and need not be over-burdened with additional work in the evening. The amount of homework is minimal in comparison to traditional schools. Further, parents are urged not to help students with homework specifically so that the teachers can discern whether the students understand the material. The penalty for failing to do homework is to attend a study session. It is non-punitive.

My experience at the school is that the kids are extremely accepting of all types of students and very welcoming of new students. I don't know that "character" is focused on as much as I've seen at parochial schools. However, there is no lack of character among the student population.

Our son moved from Swift to Howard and he has loved having more exposure to the arts (music and art). He also loves his teachers who are truly customizing his learning experience for him. In areas where he excels, they are finding ways to challenge him. In areas where he struggles, they are giving him all the support he needs.

The Howard school is an amazing school for. Hildren with learning differences. My child attended another private school for 7 years prior to joining the Howard school. She was called stupid and dumb that she actually believed it . When we moved to the Howard school we found out that not only is she smart , but the school helped her build character. They nurtured her leadership skills and taught her how to advocate for herself. They give them homework that helps them learn the material in very creative ways. The curriculum covers the ga public school curriculum and more. I am very pleased and I wish I knew about the school earlier. The Howard school gave me my happy child back and I recommend it to anyone struggling with language disorders, speech delays or learning differences

School is well trained in Orton Gillingham and other tools and methods for kids with learning differences. Unlike our prior expereince at another school, they demonstrate it daily with the curriculum and learning techniques that they encourage students and parents to adopt. They teach the kids to be an advocate for themselves as well.

As a parent of a 1st grader majority of work is done at school which takes pressure off of parents. Home work is optional and mostly consist of reinforcing with creative learning techniques or computer apps and learning sites.

Everything became a problem. Punishing my child for things other children had done but without the same "punishment". They are unethical and it is condoned.

The school allows other parents to bully. You have some crazy parents here (some great too). One parent went to another parents home forcing her way in demanding to see her childs electronics. Parents will call your kids and bully them. Tell other kids and parents not to speak to them. When bought to the schools attention, they did nothing to this parent, but put her as a coach on the soccer team of the very team she was bullying kids on.

Teacher do not know what they are doing. Don'd dare ask questions about academics all hell will break loose. You are wasting your money. My child fell far behind. Howard has the nerve to tell you to get a tutor when they are not doing what they are supposed to. During conferences they can't answer questions and will look to the principal before answering any question from the parents.

Absolutely not. The school themselves are unethical in the way they handle incidents. Just depends on who you are. Teachers are very mean to students and it is allowed. My daughter made a gift for her teacher and when she (the school) became made at her she gave the gift back. Destroying my childs self-esteem. How is that for character. When I discussed it with the teacher and school, they still gave the gift back. It was pottery made at school. She accepted the gift kept it and then gave it back in a box sent home.

It takes kids 5 minutes to complete homework. All homework is done on the computer, which is not always good. Not challenging at all

My 9th grader has been at Howard since 3rd grade. There is no other place he would rather be (school or otherwise). It's his safe haven from which he can challenge himself and take risks to grow that he would not otherwise. He has a very complicated medical history and the school has been phenomenal in working with him. I'm really impressed with the community they have built at the school. When we started several years ago, I thought the focus on teaching kids to be their own advocates sounded nice, but wow, I now see what that looks like in reality and it is a tremendous skill they foster. Howard truly teaches the "whole child" - academics, physical, social, and emotional health.
If the school is a good fit for your kid (and I'm sure its not a good fit for all kids . . . Howard is pretty good at determining that), then you are lucky because your child with be at a truly amazing place.

Howard has been a game-changer for our daughter as well as for our family. The administration & staff seek to provide each student with what they need as an individual, as a student & as a bright person who simply requires a different approach to learning. Our family dynamic has completely changed since our daughter began attending The Howard School. We saw steady improvement in her self-confidence and in her attitude towards learning in just her first few months at the school. Feelings of frustration and desperation have been replaced with those of gratitude and pride as we have all benefited from the specialized attention and direction offered to our daughter by the talented and dedicated staff of The Howard School. Our son attended Howard School for 4 years. We loved the teachers, and it never felt like a special needs school to our son (he thought he was just "going to school!"). The level of expertise that you get along side your teacher (SLP's, literacy teachers, math lab, school psychologists) is unmatched. It's a true interdisciplinary team approach. We made a mutual decision that he was no longer on mission for the school (i.e., he had more social-emotional issues that went beyond what the school served). Even so, they were so compassionate in helping us find another placement for our son. We had such a good 4 years there, and our son made great strides!

The most expensive place to send your kid once you have given up on them. The Howard School has no sense of urgency or desire to see their kids progress. This is a great place if you are happy to watch your child languish and fall farther and farther behind. Otherwise, please look for a more results-oriented school.

The Howard School has been life-changing for both of our children. The caring, qualified faculty teaches to each student's unique learning style. They help each student understand his/her strengths and weaknesses and how to self-advocate. Since coming to Howard, my children have become happy and confidant, and have learned to love school again. Our daughter is now in college, and Howard prepared her very well. She was accepted everywhere she applied, and received merit-based scholarships. Howard is a school for bright students who learn differently. The talented faculty and staff know how to tap into each student's learning profile and help them become confidant learners. Howard has been a gift to our family, and we feel very fortunate to have our children there.

Pick The Howard School! The Howard School is a perfect fit for my son, who is now in high school. He previously attended an A-rated private school since he was 4 years old. He is a smart kid, but was not doing that well academically, and had a less-than-stellar social life. We decided to apply him out, as other kids who attended this school did for similar reasons. I cannot believe the difference. He went from a confidence level of zippy to a 10 in about 2 months. No kidding. He is enjoying school for the first time in about 4 years! He has lots of friends, both boys and girls, and has very positive relationships with every single teacher he has. At the first conference of this school year, he presented to his Dad and me, speaking candidly about his strengths, and acknowledging his weaknesses and what he can do to compensate. I don't need my children to go to Ivy League schools, although they could!, but I do need them to be confident individuals that are in an environment that allows them to succeed. The Howard School is a terrific environment that I wish every child could be in and benefit from. You feel it from the moment you walk into the lobby. It's really a neat place and we are so happy to be a part of it.

I was very happy with Howard in the early years. Once our child entered middle school, academically our child did not make progress. After leaving Howard, we have gone to a more traditional school. The progress has improved dramatically. For the tuition we paid at Howard, the academic progress was not achieved.

This school is amazing. My son has Mixed Language Expressive Receptive Processing Disorder. He has a language delay as well. He entered into this school last year and it has made such a difference in his life. He now has confidence, can read, is part of the movie club, the art club and more. The administration is wonderful and the teachers are unbelievable. Teachers are wonderful! and amazing to work with! The Lower School is wonderful and there is a great lower school principal that is great with amazing counselors. They are worth the money that we pay to have our son go there. I hope we can stay forever!

The Howard School has been a Godsend for our family! Our son has OCD, and experienced extreme anxiety in his large public high school. He missed nearly 25% of his freshman year due to anxiety-related absences, and really struggled to make friends. While we knew he was bright, his grades suffered because of missing classes and coping with stress. We transferred him to Howard in his sophomore year. The class sizes are small, and the teachers get to know they students well. Our son has been challenged academically, but has been given accommodations when he needs them. There is a lot of discussion in class, and students have the opportunity to really delve deeply into their subjects. Our son was readily accepted by the other students, and he now has good friends. He rarely misses a day of school, and his grades have improved significantly. He's had opportunities to play school sports that he never would have in a 2,000-student public school. He did very well on the SAT and the ACT and he will graduate this spring and attend college in the fall. Our son is now a happy, confident young man, and Howard gets the credit! We cannot recommend it highly enough.

We began our journey at The Howard School January 2011. We have a daughter with dyslexia and all that goes with it. We were shut out of several of the Buckhead schools mid-year that accept children with reading and language difficulties. However, Howard realized that when a child is diagnosed with learning challenges, immersion needs to begin immediately. She is in the lower school and has made such amazing progress in understanding and comprehending what she reads. Math continues to be a challenge, but the tools Howard provides students will help her in the years to come. I fully believe that early diagnosis and immersing her at Howard will provide the best foundation for her in the years to come. I realize with the focus on getting them to read, write and compute math at grade level, they may miss things in other subjects. It will be easy to make up in the years to come. Plus...who really ever used what they learned in 2nd grade earth science anyway.
