A Sweet School with a Big Divide Between the Lower and Upper Grades

Holy Spirit is a sweet little school, and I believe the preschool is wonderful. The elementary school is also lovely, with kind teachers and a warm environment. I would recommend the preschool through 5th grade without hesitation.

Unfortunately, my experience with the middle and high school has been very different. In my opinion, the school is significantly overpriced for the overall experience, facilities, and quality of some staff members. I feel the tuition would be much more reasonable closer to the $15,000 range.

The administration has also been one of my biggest frustrations. For such a small school that is actively trying to attract and retain students, I have found the administration to be surprisingly difficult to communicate with and, at times, unnecessarily rude. Having experienced both public and private schools in different parts of the country, the lack of responsiveness from administration at Holy Spirit has been the most disappointing.

There are certainly wonderful people at the school, and I don’t want that to get lost in this review. However, I think families should go into the upper grades with their eyes open. My strongest recommendation would be preschool through 5th grade, but I would seriously consider other options once your child reaches middle school.

Overall, Holy Spirit has a warm and special community in the younger grades, but I don’t believe the middle and high school experience currently justifies the cost of tuition.

If you don’t care about your child’s future, send them to Holy Spirit Prep. HSP was an incredible school years ago, somewhere along the way it plummeted and has only gotten worse recently.
HSP accepts children that have severe learning differences as well as severe behavioral problems. The president of the school ensures that staff are equipped with handling difficult children, but in reality, everyone is overwhelmed, and the students are suffering; there are no resources for them or the children. This inability to take care of the needs of the children and staff has led to the severe decline in admissions and a record number of faculty jumping ship. The new principal of the school, the only one with qualifications and genuine care for the children, unfortunately left as well.
Holy Spirit hides behavioral and academic issues from parents. This is due to multiple admin having children with these issues and not wanting to draw attention to their own family. Students are not held to any behavioral standard and the children rule the school. Holy Spirit Prep used to be an amazing school, but I warn everyone against coming here anymore.

Holy Spirit Prep has been an absolute Godsend for our family. We're incredibly grateful and blessed to have three children enrolled here for now four consecutive school years. We are blessed with a remarkable faculty, and we love our Legionary priests. If you want your family to be involved with a full community, a true Catholic school where nearly every family practices the faith, lives it as their top priority, and wants nothing more than their children to grow up with the truth of the faith, the Holy Spirit is really the only option in the entire Atlanta metro area outside of perhaps a home school co-op here and there. Academics and sports are fantastic. The family life -- the closeness of all the families -- is bar none. You're not going to find this environment anywhere else.

Our son attended HSP for 3 years, but ultimately we chose to transfer him to another school. The teachers want to support students with learning differences, but the school lacks the expertise. As stated by many others on this site, administrators are oblivious to the bullying and high stress levels their students experience. Some of the parents are bigger bullies than the kids, but as long as they continue writing checks, everyone looks the other way. Sports (but not Sportsmanship) seem more important than academics at HSP. It’s a top down issue, as their program emphasizes winning over inclusion or Godliness.

Our kids have been here for several years. I feel like the faculty has found its groove and the teachers are phenomenal this year.

The academics are rigorous and the faith piece is beautiful. We have so many wonderful friends that are parents as well - the community has become like family. The priests on campus are essential and have become so important in our children’s lives.

In all honesty, I feel as though a one star rating might be overstating the environment. We were originally interested in the school because of the John Carroll Program. The first year, it was everything represented by the school, and more. Unfortunately, the EXTREEMLY high turnover in administration and staff inhibited the school's ability to ensure continuity in all aspects of school life. We have had several teachers leave during the school year and four or more principals in the last three years. Moreover, families seem to stay at the school for a couple of years, then decide to leave. Obviously, this makes the social aspect of the school very difficult for the students as well as the parents. Finally, the athletic program is underfunded, unsupported by the administration, and lacks qualified coaches. If you are looking for a typical Catholic education for your child, look elsewhere!

I am a new family and I have had a wonderful experience this past year. Admissions really made me feel welcomed throughout the admissions and onboarding process. I got to meet several current families and have my kids meet current students. Our family ambassador was great and I’m excited to become a family ambassador one day. The administration is amazing and always willing to set up a one on one meeting to catch up. It’s not super distant feel like other private schools I’ve read about. The teachers genuinely care. Yes, there are some first year teachers but they are amazing. There is a great mix of teachers that have been hear for years and teacher that joined HSP this last year. They are a truly Catholic Classical school. The academics are great and I’m looking forward to having my kids here through the 12th grade and recommending the school to all of my friends. Highly recommend.

Great teachers. Students are so joyful and so welcoming. Loved how they handled COVID with optional masks. Really helped the students from a social, mental, and emotional well-being. A few parents were upset about it but it was really more because of their personal choice. The school communicated extremely well. Love the Catholic Classical model. Impressed at how diverse the school is as well. Out of almost 200 schools, #15 most diverse? Nicely done.

I had a terrible experience with this school. For the 5 years I went there, I always felt targeted by the administration. HSP often picks and chooses favorites based on if their parents donate large amounts of money. While at hsp, I often was treated like a bad kid, but looking back I was completely normal, they just liked to pick on certain kids.
After leaving and going to public school for my junior and senior year, I realized that my parents wasted at least $105 on mediocrity. I came across some of the worst teachers that did not care about their students success. HSP is also discriminatory against those who are not catholic, such as myself. I also noticed certain teachers tended to take unfair disciplinary actions on the minorities and not on their favorite students for the same behavior.
I never experienced bullying but I definitely witnessed it a lot. Whether it was student on student, or faculty on student.
I have so many memories of bringing issues to the administration when I needed help, and instead being told the things I was doing wrong. This would then result in me crying in the bathroom multiple times per week.
This school claims to be a preparatory school but it does nothing but encourage its students to be sensitive little brats.

This school claims to be Catholic, but it’s the farthest thing from that. The leadership doesn’t care about their faculty or what’s best for their students. I’m not sure what is going on exactly but teachers are treated horribly for no reason. They fire them or they all quit because of it. Everything they do is unethical and the students look miserable. The whole leadership team is a mess!! I honestly have no idea how this school is even open still. It’s not worth the money. I advise all parents to get out now and spend that tuition at another school. Any other school in Buckhead would be 100 times better than Holy Spirit. Admin are required to write good reviews about the school so all of the ones you read are approved by them and posted. It’s a joke!

This school is failing in every level. The administration is cutting corners and firing experienced talented teachers. The lower school has no consistent curriculum and the upper school in unable to offer competitive rigorous classes. The religion taught at the school is way beyond conservative Catholic theology. Don’t waste your money here or agree to work for them. They do not care about their community and are not serving the students.

I have two children at Holy Spirit Prep and couldn't be more pleased with their experience as students and my experience as a parent at the Lower School. My children have a genuine affection for their school, the school community, and their teachers. As a parent, I take a great deal of comfort knowing that the children are somewhere they want to be.

Like the other independent schools in Atlanta, HSP's curriculum and faculty is rigorous and, in my opinion, top notch. What really sets HSP apart, though, for me, is the joy with which the faculty and staff approach the work of educating our children and their very real commitment to nurturing the mind, body, and spirit of our children. HSP is not just about academics and extracurriculars. The faculty take an active role in helping us raise our children in a way befitting the Catholic virtues. It's a very different world than the one I grew up in in the 1990s, and I am truly grateful to have a school family to lean on as we navigate adolescence and beyond.

I was in art education- look at the credentials of the upper school art teachers- they have none. No degrees, no portfolios,  no experience. & then look at what they are charging you. The upper school is in such bad shape, they did not replace the headmaster to save money, and let most of the experienced teachers go this year - again to save money. Sinking ship. Give you kid a life jacket  if you send them there, they may well need it.

Posted: August 16, 2020

I questioned the leadership at HSP for several years, but found grace in the teachers in the community. However, when I thought wasn't possible for leadership to get even worse -- it has. Lots of people proclaiming they are living the values of Jesus, when in actuality they lie and treat others that think differently from them terribly. Lord help the children and the teachers stuck in that school during this tumultuous time. Strong beliefs that Covid can be prayed away.

Lackluster. For what you pay, it's just not worth it. We pulled our children before their education became hampered by the narrow-mindedness of the recommended curriculum offered at the older grades. I encourage anyone looking here to look at other Catholic schools (for half the money) or any of the other private schools where you get what you pay for. This place is an absolute sinking ship.

Leadership communicates clearly and often. Parents and students alike have input into school decisions. Issues are handled discreetly, but swiftly and effectively.

Posted: September 25, 2019

My children are mainstream learners so I really cannot speak to this.

Posted: September 25, 2019

For the most part the culture at the school is one of supportiveness all around, so my children have not experienced bullying at all. The few student issues I have heard about have been resolved swiftly and fairly.

Posted: September 25, 2019

Holy Spirit helps grow the whole child, spiritually, intellectually, and morally. My children in their high school years have thoughtful, considerate conversation with their peers (even those with whom they disagree) which impresses upon me there is a culture of respect and integrity.

Posted: September 25, 2019

My daughters are not inundated with homework but have challenging assignments appropriate for their age that enhance what they learn in class.

Posted: September 25, 2019

Classes are intellectually challenging; students are sometimes expected to read first, and then engage in discussions in class (for subjects like history, theology, literature). There are advanced and on-level options for most subjects.

Holy Spirit Prep is an amazing school. My two daughters that attend are as different as night and day, yet both have found an amazing, but very different experience. My older daughter is artistic, aspiring to be a musician and medical artist, and she has been supported completely. She is now in her 3rd year of art (hoping for AP Art next year), able to play organ weekly, particpates in school musicals, and while encouraged to stay healthy she is not at all shamed for not being the best in sports. My younger daughter has been welcomed onto a championship varsity basketball team as a freshman, and despite less ability than many of the girls, feels an integral part of the team, with a coach who treats everyone equally and a bench full of girls jumping up to cheer her when she sank her first game basket last year. She has blossomed from a shy 8th grader into a very confident 10th grader due to the HSP basketball program. All her teachers have helped to improve her confidence as well. I firmly believe there is something for everyone at Holy Spirit Prep, and am hoping to send two more of my children (twins, but again very different) there next year! I highly recommend this school!

All my friends that had learning disabilities left the school years ago.

Posted: April 24, 2019

If you are rich play a sport. I have played on multiple undefeated club soccer teams. When I tried out as a Freshman didn't make the team. Or the practice team they created for certain families. I was one of two players who tried out and didn't make the team or practice team.

Posted: April 24, 2019

Started out great but they got new principals and everything changed. All they care about is sports. I tried to live up to the values of the school. My mom had to fight for them allow me to mentor STEM at the lower school but they let the football players mentor. FYI - they delete comments they don't like on facebook and other social media.

Posted: April 24, 2019

To be rigorous they loaded us with homework that really didn't help us learn.

Posted: April 24, 2019

Good teachers other than Dr. Deen and Mr. Rohs all leave. Teachers have their favorites and there are lots of double standards. They are never available for tutoring.

Posted: February 7, 2019

Posted: February 7, 2019

I have not had a personal need for it, but other parents have. They do what they can to accommodate students with different learning patterns, yet if it is a severe case that requires specialized attention, then they may not be able to.

Posted: February 7, 2019

It shows on every child. They know what a good friend is and if they deviate, then there will be consequences.

Posted: February 7, 2019

My kids love it and it is a caring environment for them. Look with any school, it has its very strong points and areas of growth. If you want your child you have a good education while being shaped into a remarkable individual, then check them out.

Posted: February 7, 2019

My son is at the lower school. Although there is no homework, there are projects and preparation for tests. HSP does not believe in loading kids with school work at a young age; and this is something my husband & I strongly agree with.

Upper School Principal is clueless and only cares about building a reputation for sports. Our family has ben battling health issues and the school's management did nothing to help or support our family. Unless you are part of her inner circle or a big donor Jocelyn Sotomayor the Upper School Principal doesn't have time for you.

Students with learning disabilities are often held back and pay an additional fee to attend.

Posted: January 30, 2019

Had to pull my daughter after years of trying to work with the school to address the bullying problem. We know of many other families that have left because of bullying. In addition to teacher turn over you see many families come and go. School ties to boast about 17 in their graduating class but it goes back to their core families and double standards.

Posted: January 30, 2019

For my son average. My daughter is nolonger at this school!

Posted: January 30, 2019

Have a son at the Lower School and had a daughter at Upper School. Lower School has a no homework policy and Upper School loads students with unnecessary homework. Problem couldn't figure out where to put 7th and 8th graders so they bounced back and forth with homework.

Posted: January 30, 2019

Few amazing teachers. But we found that both campuses have a good bit of turn over. Upper School claims to have tutoring before and after school but teachers are never available. Many teachers coach sports and this takes priority.

Posted: January 30, 2019

The school talks a good talk but doesn't walk to the walk. Focuses on core group of students and families that can do no wrong. Students have lack of respect for others and bullying and drugs are everywhere. There is no problem that a large donation can't fix.

Posted: December 31, 2018

The lower school principle is unapproachable and not solutions oriented. Parents have no where to turn when a problem arises.

Their teachers always encouraged them that their were no limits as to what you can accomplish ... The school for us was the complete package ! My son is an attorney and my daughter will be done with medical school in May of 2019.

HSP is great on the surface. Once you look at what is behind the curtain, you see a disaster. Underfunded, incompetent leadership, unqualified teachers, below average academics, terrible facilities, horrible sports, parents who have checked out, it just goes on and on. Each year they add a little more, but it all is to cover up the fact that most graduates do not get into good school, parents who transfer kids even to public schools find their kids are WAY behind the average. The LS Principal is an absolute bully. He is so rude and obnoxious, it is best to avoid him. Don't think of asking him any questions about what goes on in the class or school, he just does not know. I have 2 children that have been at HSP since Kindergarten and are currently in middle school. We have found HSP to be a fabulous school. Both children have been consistently challenged academically and both have standardized test scores above 95% in all areas. We have found the teachers to be positive, motivating and challenging for both of our students. Our children are happy and thriving in this environment. The comment below mentions Mr. P as being gone from the school - he is currently the Head of School and has been for the past 4 + years.

Posted: December 15, 2017

We found this comment from one of the parents to be accurate but it was not just during enrollment, it is throughout the years of attendance.

“Favoritism, bullying, and lack of respect for the human person was evident during our enrollment. Overall this school in not on par academically with other Catholic and private schools in the Atlanta area.”

We have experienced it during our Child’s stay at this school specially the upper school. You have to be in the inner close-nit circle of families or big financial contributor to get an equal treatment for your child. We regret sending our child to this school. We were reluctant to move in the middle of high-school and stayed. Through strong family support, our child survived it and is now a happy and flourishing college student. We do not recommend this school.

As a family we have been very disappointed with our experience at Holy Spirit Prep. Our children attended the school totaling over 16 years - preschool to graduation. As a parent, it is difficult to reflect on the fundamental flaws with this school. My children were not academically challenged or prepared. This was mostly due to the lack of experienced teachers, many lacked advanced degrees and/or teaching certifications. The upper school teachers in particular show very little regard for individual student success. My children were also adversely affected by the lack of student and teacher retention, along with the constant redefining of the school's leadership and mission. What I found most disappointing was the lack of Catholic principles in regard to the human person. Favoritism, bullying, and lack of respect for the human person was evident during our enrollment. Overall this school in not on par academically with other Catholic and private schools in the Atlanta area.

This is our first year at HSP and the experience thus far has been amazing. The Catholic centric environment in the upper school is wonderful to see reinforced in everything the student does. My daughter is in all accelerated courses and is being properly challenged and engaged by the material. She has been involved in their athletics program as well and is very engaged. The homework is quite a bit more than she is used to but she is adjusting. She did come from another private Catholic school and did have a good foundation to prepare her for high school. The administration has been most welcoming to the new families and I have been impressed with the small community feel. I would recommend this school to other parents who are seeking a strong Catholic formation for their children and a great academic environment.

Unfortunately, tuition is not on par with the education attainment compared to the other private schools in the area. Nepotism is very strong or you must "pay" to play. Many of the faculty members are young & inexperienced, they teach subjects that are beyond their capacity. The tenured, experienced faculty are amazing but there are very few of them. We were at HSP for seven years until our daughter graduated, (we only stayed because of the remarkable friendships we made) many family's left during our tenure which was very unfortunate. The school is always in "re-organization mode" thus, the overall direction is never clear. Would I openly recommend HSP..? Probably not; especially the upper school.

The good ones left. There was a change in leadership and it was downhill since then.

The last effective person in the administration who was strict but consistent no matter which family the student comes from was Mr. P as he was called and he left some 5 or so years ago. It was downhill after that.

I'm dying to know which new leaders the other reviewer thinks are ineffective and why??? I'm really curious.

Posted: October 17, 2016

They run a tight ship! Any disrespectful behavior is given an infraction. I don't disagree with this approach.

Posted: October 17, 2016

We have found math to be great, English challenging. Teachers always available after school, which my kids use frequently.

Posted: October 17, 2016

They generally use a portal to see what homework the kids have and post their grades so the parents can see progress. This can be improved though.

Posted: October 4, 2016

While we have had no direct experience with bullying, the School clearly conveys that one must love your neighbor and emphasizes Christian charity.

Posted: October 4, 2016

The school is built upon keeping families together as much as possible and within the resources it has. Each teacher we have had knows that each child has unique gifts and learns differently.

Posted: October 4, 2016

We have been pleased with the responsiveness and availability of the principals. I sense that they genuinely have our child's best interests at heart.

Posted: October 4, 2016

The virtues seem to be a part of the fabric of the school: from no locks on the lockers to monthly virtue campaigns.

Posted: October 4, 2016

The teachers we have had seem to genuinely care for and love our child. This has been consistent for us and a mark of a fine Catholic school.

Posted: October 4, 2016

The approach to homework has been fair. It gets more challenging as our child has moved up but we have expected that.

Posted: October 4, 2016

Our child has been very happy attending Holy Spirit Prep. The teachers and strong sense of community and opportunities to grow in faith as a family are unmatched.

Posted: September 24, 2016

Not consistent. here also the interpretation of what bulling does not seem to be consistent.

Posted: September 24, 2016

It is one size fits all. If you fit what the teachers approach is fine if not there is no consideration for the student's learning differences.

Posted: September 24, 2016

Inconsistent. I will say they try but when something is sensed as going wrong the applicability of the school's laws depends on the parents influence in the school.

Posted: September 24, 2016

There are some good teachers at this school but you also find teachers teaching a subject that was not their major.

Posted: September 24, 2016

It all depends on the teacher and is very inconsistent. There are few effective teachers.

Posted: April 27, 2016

Holy Spirit Preparatory School is an institution of excellence and tradition along with community, education, faith, and love. It is structured and disciplined and full of love from from the teachers, staff and parents.

There is a problem with honesty in certain groups and has ramifications both within the school as well as extracurricular activities.

Posted: February 15, 2016

Updated from an earlier review...although we still feel this school has alot of great qualities, what we are experiencing is parents who are willing to do whatever it takes to insure their child gets preferential treatment, whether it be during the regular school hours or for extracurricular activities. Many of the kids who have been at the school for a long time feel a sense of entitlement and often their behavior, be it bullying or just acting out, is overlooked by the administration. We feel there is no accountability for actions and that honesty is not a valued virtue by some of the parents, and therefore, their children. We strive to teach our children to practice the Golden Rule and would expect this same environment at HSP. So far, we have been disappointed. The teachers are wonderful but it does seem, as a few posters have mentioned, that as long as your family gives enough money to the school, etc., your child's bad behavior is tolerated. We work very hard to afford the tuition at HSP and still believe it is the best school for our children but would like to see a little more accountability on the part of the parents, children and administration.

We are new to HSP this year with one child in first grade and the other in Pre-K2. There are no words to express how thrilled we are with the experience thus far. Our first grader is receiving the accelerated academic program he needs to reach his full potential while developing spiritually in his Catholic faith. Our toddler loves the preschool and his teachers. The preschool has exceeded our expectations with the loving teachers who truly care about the children's development academically, socially and spiritually. Communication at all levels is outstanding at HSP. Teachers reach out consistently to let you know how your child is performing while the administration is friendly and open to suggestions for improvement. Great school with wonderful families and staff. Go Cougars!

Posted: November 19, 2015

The teachers are true educators by vocation. They are available for tutorial before or after school so that students can get extra help. Classroom teaching methods are varied and creative.

Posted: November 19, 2015

Students get enough homework to practice what they have learned and to grow in their reading and writing without having to spend hours after school completing work.

Posted: November 19, 2015

The schools honor code and formation in virtue encourage students to grow in honesty and integrity.

Posted: November 19, 2015

The school is true to its mission. Teachers, staff and administrators truly care about each student. The small classes and high calibre of academics make for an incredible combination. Each student can truly grow to become the person God created them to be in this school environment.

Never did I think I would have a child who was sad when the weekend rolled around because she didn't get to go to school. Yes, you read that right. She LOVES Holy Spirit Prep. And so do I. From the first moment I walked my daughter in for her first day of school, I felt like we were at home. The curriculum and academics are top notch (I literally have conversations in Spanish with my 3-year-old). The faculty is outstanding -- they love, care and nurture all of the children.

My favorite part of the day is driving my daughter to school and her singing the new song she had learned the day before. It's sweet, innocent and makes my heart happy. When she's greeted by one of the amazing faculty at drop off she literally BOUNDS out the door and runs in the door to meet her adorable friends.

We are blessed to have found this place. It's somewhere where kids can be kids and learn in a safe, loving and dynamic environment. Thank you HSP.

Our family has been very pleased with HSP. Our son, at 15 years of age, enjoys the school and is in a good mood each morning on our drive to their location. This school is truly unique with its welcoming environment. It feels more like a community of family. The classical education approach provides a solid foundation for the students to move forward. My only regret is that I did not enroll my son here sooner.

Its such a wonderful feeling when your little babies hop out of the car at the tender age of two, wave good bye and skip into school to be with their "friends". We have never experienced a tearful goodbye here and are certain it has to do with the amazing teachers who love them as much as they love their teachers.
Developmentally, we cant help but notice our daughter continually surpassing that of her friends outside of school. There are rotating classes outside of their main classrooms including Spanish, STEM, Art and Creative Movement, which we have enjoyed seeing her carry over into life outside of school (saying the sign of the cross in Spanish, recognizing the famous Great Wave of Japanese artist Hokusai at sushi night, and even just singing cute songs shes learned as she goes about her day). Its the little moments that melt your heart at this age, and at Holy Spirit Prep, our hearts are full.

This is our 3rd year at Holy Spirit Prep PreK! We started our children at age 2 and have been blessed to be part of this amazing community. We were so excited to learn that HSP has a 2 year old program for PreK as we very much wanted to start out children in a social and educational program at this age. From the first visit, we knew it was a special place and one that we were comfortable sending our little ones to. Our children have thrived in the school. They have gained a strong foundation of skills in academics, social settings and faithfulness. Our twin boys each have a unique personality and different interests. The teachers have supported each child and celebrated their individuality. This has provided each of them with an interest and desire to learn - the best foundation we could ask for at this age. We are so happy with this loving, Catholic environment where our children are growing into the best versions of themselves and already demonstrating their understanding of faith.

While some of the teachers were very good, most were not. They either didn't know what they were teaching or they were mean or harsh to the students.

Posted: July 21, 2015

The workload for homework was actually very reasonable, and I have nothing negative to say in this respect.

Posted: July 21, 2015

Are you kidding me? It teaches us to practically be a wolf pack. Basically shun all students who don't "fit in" but then act like an angel around teachers and staff.

Posted: July 21, 2015

There are so many reasons that this school deserves one star that I hardly know where to begin. I was a student there for four years and stressed out because of constant bullying. The administration nurtures, as others have said, a very toxic environment that almost encourages students to bully others. There were a few good teachers but the majority either didn't know what they were teaching - there was an English major teaching math, for example - or were mean or harsh. That's not to say all the teachers were like this - if there is one good thing I can say about the school it's that the few good teachers they have really are great and truly seemed to care about the students. However, the academics were a joke, and writing - a very important skill to have - was hardly covered. I struggled a lot when I switched schools. If you didn't "fit in" with the popular cliques, you were shunned and bullied; if you tried to befriend anyone who didn't fit in with those cliques, again, shunned and bullied. The "counselor" had no degree and seemed to hurt students (including myself) more than help, basically by telling you that everything the other students were doing was "in your head" and you were being "oversensitive." I am a cradle Catholic but this school did not seem at all Catholic to me. It was all about image and prestige, instead of God and faith. It did not live out the Christian motto at all and I was so disappointed. So glad to get out and go to a school where academics were good, bullying was nearly nonexistent, and all the teachers were fantastic.

As a former student, I experienced first-hand the greed of the administration and board and their total disregard for the students. They barely accommodate students with any sort of learning disability and their focus is on money, not education. Don't be deceived by how they try to portray this school-it is not worth the obscenely high tuition. They have a subpar sports program, a recently destroyed theatre program, and a mathematics department so poor it may as well not exist. Many teachers were excellent to have, but they have been consistently moving on from the school, and for good reason.

My daughter attended pre first grade at HSP several years ago. At that time she was undiagnosed ADHD which caused surmountable problems for the teachers and staff. But what I can tell you is that they were patient, loving and accommodating beyond any conceivable expectation. Dara and her staff stood by us. After a short period we left the school because I needed to get my daughter help which eventually was diagnosed separation anxiety and ADHD. I home schooled her to get her on track but it had nothing to do with not getting support from HSP. They are committed to providing a nurturing and solid academic environment to kids. In fact we will apply to 8th grade this year because I'm am extremely displeased with our current school geared to LD students, they aren't committed to academic excellence. this schools tuition is 30k and absolutely not worth it. So I hope we will return to HSP this fall so my daughter can get the proper academic teaching and assistance she needs. One last thing, parents need to remain vigilant about their children's education. There is no perfect school, no perfect parent and no perfect child.

Posted: August 27, 2014

We have not had a perfect 5-star experience in all categories, however, my child's overall experience as a middle school student has absolutely been 5-star excellent! The teachers are gifted, determined, resourceful, compassionate and challenging. The social environment and the culture of the HSP students is better than any parent could hope for in a major metropolitain area. I believe the administration's biggest concern should lie in the retention of the outstanding teachers, particularly at the upper school. We intend for our child to graduate from HSP and we pray that the current upper school faculty will still be in place and going strong, and perhaps include a few great additions. The administration would also do well to encourage the parent volunteer association leadership to take a more active role. It seems they are depending on "the grapevine" to get the word out about important events and initiatives. But I stand by my 5-star rating because my child's academic, athletic and social experience has been fantastic. Furthermore, it is my personal opinion that the more negative reviews on this site stem from a focus on the parent's experience, and not the student's.

Quite a few families are not returning to this school next year and we are among them. I am glad someone brought up the subject of medicating the children to make them fit in. We have seen testing and medication brought up with numerous families. Attend any birthday party with children from this school and you will quickly learn that the parents are not happy with the direction that the school is going in. It is a very "in the box" school so if your child is a multisensory learner or a right brained learner, HSP might not be the best choice. There is no effort go teach your child the way your child learns; in a nutshell it is "this is how we teach and this is what you get." Once we started looking at other schools we quickly figured out that academically the school is not on par with other schools. As far as the teachers and staff, they are so loving and caring. I cannot say enough good things about the way they treated our children.

Our son is graduating this year after 12 years at Holy Spirit. He exceled on the sportsfield and accademically through hard work, but we know that the wonderful teachers at Holy Spirit and the learning environment based on strong ethics and Catholic values has played a major role in making him what he is today. In particular, we are very happy to see the direction that the school has taken under guidance of the new adminsitration, and are excited to see what lies in the future for HSP. I know that ur son will always be a proud alumnus of HSP. We, as parents, are confident in the knowledge that he has the tools to take on bigger challenges out there to succeed as a human being, and child of Christ.

Without a doubt HSP has had some growing pains. However, I have not regretted sending my children there. I have been a parent here at HSP since 1999! The last two years have been challenging but I am convinced the Board along with a great President have listened and implanted changes, all for the better! My children have done really well there, Academically, socially and spiritually. Their College options have been amazing, and they are working with my rising Senior so she too will have great options too. Three of my children have learning disabilities, each and every one of them have been catered too. I must stress, their learning challenges are very moderate, they must work a little harder but can keep up. This is not the school for a child with extreme disabilities as this is a school with high academic standards. This school has a warm friendly atmosphere. Everyone pretty much knows everyone, if this is what you are looking for in a school, coupled with strong academics, ethics, a spiritual life, access to warm and caring teachers, tutoring included in your tuition, this is the school for you. I gave the school 4 instead of 5 stars, its close but not there yet!

HSP works with each student to ensure that they achieve success, based on what the student views as success. The smaller class sizes, the wide range of classes, the ability to participate at a high school level in sports, and the religious based education have greatly benefited our daughter. The school offers a great, safe environment for students to mature into young adults with great sucess when they go to college.

Posted: April 12, 2014

HSP is a fantastic school. The previous two (maybe) posters are so wildly inaccurate that I really must seriously wonder about their bona fides and agenda. My child has been there for a decade (K - 9). We are no "insiders". We have never encountered an iota of any of the things alleged in the preceding comments. I would know if they existed at HSP. They don't. There's no bullying. Nothing even close is tolerated. There is no "anxiety"among the students. This is not just inaccurate but laughable. I have never seen a more happy, friendly, warm, kind, good bunch of kids anywhere. HSP really is a terrific, special place. My child has benefited so much in every way from attending. It is one of our greatest blessings to have found it. There are disgruntled people everywhere. A few kids have turned out to be troublesome after coming to HSPS and have not been allowed to return. Unfortunately, that is often unavoidable to maintain a sound, loving, nourishing, welcoming environment of excellence, and to avoid the very types of problems alleged, falsely, in the preceding comments. Pay no heed to those comments for any accurate assessment of HSP. Go see it for yourself. This all will be clear.

My children have attended Holy Spirit Prep since preschool. My oldest is going to college next year - with more college acceptances and scholarships than we ever expected. My younger one is on track to do the same thing. Holy Spirit has a small, warm community that is rare. The teachers and administrators go to extraordinary efforts to help their students do their best - both in academics and as people. Sending our children to Holy Spirit Prep is the best decision we ever made as parents.

A true gem of a school. Stellar academics; the Classics; deep faith; great college placement; broad extracurriculars; all in a small, caring environment and one of the loveliest neighborhoods in Atlanta. We started in kindergarten and have been there ever since. My now 9th grade daughter translates to and from Classical Greek, is in the National Latin Honor Society, runs in the state track championships, and talks with me about Demosthenes and DNA as maturely as an adult. Exactly the education I wanted for her. And she is a normal kid. She has accomplished this because of HSP the terrific teaching and high expectations, but also the nurturing environment and individual attention that all receive there. HSP is one of the few schools in the country that offer Classical Greek and Latin. Graduates land at Harvard, Yale, Ga. Tech, and the like. But HSP is not a pressure cooker; it is like a big family. The students are very good kids--happy, kind, welcoming, and supportive, across varied abilities and backgrounds. The place exudes warmth. The staff are accessible and responsive; the facilities are great. We are very blessed to have found HSP. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Holy Spirit Prep is committed to helping each student discover his or her best self. Our school engages and supports the entire family creating an environment of positivity that is unlike other school communities. You can be confident that HSP will prepare your child for college and for life. Our graduate attend some of the nations finest universities and each student is viewed as an individual masterpiece of our creator.

Posted: April 7, 2014

I beg to differ too... Holy Spirit is only good if your child is "normal" and fits in the box (or if you keep your child medicated to fit in) It simply amazing how they wonder why there's such high anxiety in the school among the students & bullying that is not addressed equally from child-to-situation. There is clearly favoritism and disadvantages if you don't fit their small-framed mentality. Oh, and we are from a Catholic upbringing and our children were baptized at the hand of Monsignor - - - bears no weight on how they treat you. Classic and complete - NOT. There is a lot of smoke and mirrors at this school. Hence, why we left!

Posted: March 29, 2014

Beg to differ with the previous reviewer about leaving before HSP changes were implemented. We left this year along with three other families we know. It is no secret that this school is struggling. There are other Catholic and private alternatives in the area with a better reputation and quality of education and academic life.

Posted: February 24, 2014

As a father, I can only hope that our children are nurtured, encouraged and supported to grow, learn and be fulfilled beyond the capacity of their own individual capabilities in a Catholic environment which teaches them to love themselves and others, understand that God loves them. Holy Spirit Prep so FAR SURPASSES other schools in the area across these dimensions. Parochial Catholic schools are often Catholic in name only. Private schools are so focused upon their reputation that student development and success is a means to their reputation. HSP Teachers are unbelievably dedicated and amazing, class size is intimate to allow focused attention on the students, curriculum is customized and challenging. Our children have attended for 6 years and flourished. Above all - the community is second to none. Too often we have heard from other families who have left, how they regret and miss the HSP community. Many have returned. Do your homework and look at the test scores and college placements. HSP far outpaces any of the other alternatives. HSP is focused upon enabling Scholars and Saints. Most of the negative reviews here are families who left before many of the current changes.

We have had a great experience at Holy Spirit! We started this school honestly not knowing anyone but wanting a small classroom environment. We have been very pleased with the overall education and family-feel of the school! The administration and teachers all truly seem to care about each child and their individual needs. They develop the whole person - not just academics. Our child has made wonderful friends, and we are confident that his school is giving him a strong academic foundation as well as reinforcing the same high morals that we also teach at home. We have been very pleased!

Holy Spirit Prep is a great school. Our children have attended HSP for the past seven years. What separates HSP from the rest is that the school offers a complete education -- mind, body, and spirit. HSP teachers have continuously worked with our children to make sure they receive individualized attention in areas where they excel and where they may need extra help. HSP's success in molding our children is visible every day, and can be statistically verified by the much higher than average standardized test scores and advanced placement testing. While no school is perfect, and HSP does not pretend to be perfect, HSP is a wonderful school that has provided extraordinary benefits to our children and family.

I am a graduate from Holy Spirit Prep. The second semester of my first year at Holy Spirit Prep my dad lost his job after the 911 incident. We were going to have to switch schools, but the school administration gave me a scholarship that amounted to $200 thousand dollars from elementary school to my senior year. I am so appreciative to the school and the people who run it with amazing generosity and zeal for our Christian values. This school has given so many opportunities to students just like me. Moreover, it is incredible to see how this Catholic school has more recently opened its doors to foreign exchanged students from China to give them an opportunity to receive a Catholic education. It is incredible to see how much they appreciate being able to learn about Christ at school and to witness some of the students be Baptized and Confirmed into our faith. This school is truly mission driven. I am so happy to continue being a part of this school through our great Alumni Association, which holds monthly social, service and spiritual events for alumni to get back on campus. Simply check out our alumni profiles on the website to see how we, the graduates, have turned out.

Our overall experience at this school was horrible and I would not recommend it for anyone. The return on investment is also poor. We had to spend money on private tutors after the $20K tuition to learn Mathematics.

Posted: December 10, 2013

In my earlier review today, I had intended to write that coaches were well qualified. All three coaches that have worked with my kids have been knowledgeable in their fields and focused on the kids. They have helped them learn, work hard and become better team members

I go to Holy Spirit's Upper School. It's not a perfect school, but I wouldn't expect it to be. The Upper School has not been around as long as other private high schools in the area, so I don't think it is fair to compare Holy Spirit in that way. Older schools obviously have larger endowments and more resources than newer schools like HSP. That is one of the reasons why tuition is so high. Since HSP is small, everyone knows everyone. There are some really great teachers at Holy Spirit who I feel lucky to have been taught by.With regard to college acceptances, Holy Spirit has had students accepted to Yale, Harvard, Notre Dame, and several other highly selective institutions. I came to Holy Spirit in ninth grade. I really love my grade, and I am so glad I decided to come to Holy Spirit. I couldn't have made a better choice.

What are some of these parents talking about? Why don't you just look at the national Iowa testing! My son has been there since preschool and he tests in the 95+ percentile and was accepted into the exclusive Duke TIP program. The lower school faculty makes sure gifted children like my son receive the advanced and customized learning enrichment they need. The school has advance math and overall performance programs. Some families do leave because of the tuition. It is high but it has been worth it. I would recommend Holy Spirit to any parent with a gifted child.

Posted: June 18, 2013

The school lost too many wonderful and supportive faculty/staff and students/families over the years. It was a fabulous school YEARS ago, as well as a beautiful campus and facility. Sad! Hoping Mr. P can turn it around!

Posted: April 29, 2013

This school is a hidden gem compared to other Atlanta private schools and Catholic schools in the area. A strong Catholic education is the foundation of this school. Committed to valuing every child as a gift from God and wiling to teach all children so that they can reach their highest potential. Worth taking a second look...

Posted: March 24, 2013

Ask yourself a couple of questions....why has the class size dropped so dramatically (especially 9th grade, 2013) and why are they having to bring in foreign exchange students to fill the gaps? Do your homework and ask questions.

Posted: January 28, 2013

Strong academics and traditional Catholic values are the foundation for this school. Our family couldn't be more challenged and happier in this environment.

Posted: December 4, 2012

There is a lot of teacher turnover in this school. Parents serving as coaches bordering on abusive. If you are considering the resource program at this school, ask a lot of questions. Ask what the qualifications are of the teachers. Are the students in the resource program Catholic? What will the tuition be? Get it in writing. The school raised the resource tuition right before school started this year and again during the school year. Does the school remediate or just accomodate? Do they use a multi-sensory approach? If you have a child coming out of Schecnk or the Speech School there are better options in Atlanta.

Please read all the postings before you decide to send your children here. There were many more comments that seem to have been deleted from this space. That is not fair. After 4 years our family was been very unhappy with the level of instruction and environment HSP offers. Teachers come and go every year and seem to leave under secretive circumstances. This school is NOT part of the Atlanta Catholic Archdiocese. Don t walk away Run away

I do not have an upper school child, but my daughter is a student in the lower school at HSP, in the first grade. She loves school, talks often about what she has learned from day to day, and has never wanted to leave at the end of the day! I have watched her grow in leaps and bounds and am very happy that we found our place at Holy Spirit Prep. I love the smaller class size and appreciate that all the teachers know and greet her on a daily basis, not just her own teacher. It's a very safe, nurturing environment that all parents should consider for their younger children.

School is way behind in math and language arts, especially in middle school. My child is struggling to catch up at a new school. Ask questions. I wish I had. Very casual atmosphere with a lot of behavioral, teasing and bullying issues. Spanish and Religion was great. The rest, not up to par. Not worth the money, in my opnion

I have worked at other schools in the Atlanta area, and I have been so happy teaching at Holy Spirit! It is a wonderful school that finds a way to challenge children while also giving extra support to those who need it. The teacher turnover is no worse than any other school, and all the teachers I work with have a background in education.

Our family loves Holy Spirit Prep! We have 2 children on the Lower School Campus and couldn't be more pleased with our experience over the past 5 years. The teachers are nurturing and genuinely care about forming the whole child. Classes are academically challenging and the learning is individualized. Technology is on the rise with one to one chromebooks being used in the Middle School and Promethian Boards and Ipads used in the lower grades. This school has a real family feel that we haven't found anywhere else in the Atlanta area. Thank you Holy Spirit!

In life's major decisions in regards to your child, it is important to complete due diligence on all sides of the avenue coming and going. We are going into 5 years with a gifted child who has challenged and supported to succeed. I will too say you have to give or yourself to make successes happen at any school. Its life's circle of influence. It is too hard to accept when it is your child that may be having the problem.

As you can read from the reviews enclosed on this school, this school is very controversial. Unfortunately, the administration allows and contributes to a school with a very toxic environment. The faculty doesn t stay very long, once they find out the direction the school is going in (downward spiral) they move out quickly. We were misled as to the educational capabilities the school could provide. Worst decision we ever made for our children, once we paid, we tried to register for high school classes and realized there was no process, no room, no good quality teachers the math and science expertise is absent from this school and there is no attention to writing skills - a critical element for every child. Carefully evaluate your educational decisions for your children - good first step looking here to see the "real" scoop. Good Luck and move to an established institution - Newly formed schools like HSP are a dangerous choice - pick a 100 year old institution. There is a reason they are not affiliated with Atlanta Area Association of Independent Schools (AAAIS) - they don't want to be regulated or controlled, the administration can do whatever they chose - DANGEROUS!

I have 2 children at HSP and it would be impossible for me to be any happier with our decision to send our children here. We have been at the school for 4 years and are constantly amazed by the staff, the school, the education my children are receiving, and the Catholic morals they will have with them their entire lives. The staff's credentials are absolutely amazing and FAR above what I would have expected from Elementary teachers. They have many enrichment programs for advanced students needing additional stimulation as well as programs for students that need extra support in particular areas. The only complaint we ever had about the school was regarding the need for rennovations at the lower school (including our muddy soccer fields). However, that thought is a distant memory! The school underwent an amazing renovation over the summer and is now absolutely beautiful - including astro-turf soccer fields!! This school is a bit pricier than other local Catholic schools - BUT WORTH EVERY CENT AND MORE! In the hustle and bustle and stresses life deals us every day, our child's education is the one thing my husband and I NEVER worry about. How can you put a price tag on that?!?!!?!

I am also very disappointed with this school. The athletic program is very weak. They still use parent coaches. You spend $18,000/yr and they can't afford to hire real coachs? The baseball diamond is a disaster and they rent space to play football. Their football league is not sanctioned. Everyone is crowded into one basketball court. If you want sports avoid this school. Overpriced !!! Go to Blessed Trinity or Marist.

Great school! We loved the overall experience at Holy Spirit. Lovely families and great education. One negative was when we moved out of state with a great deal of advance notification. The school would not refund our prepayments. We lost a lot of money! Don't sign their contract or pay unless you are DEFINITELY going to be at the school! Their contract doesn't seem clear on this, disappointing from a Christian school.
