Atlanta Speech School

My 4 year old daughter who has hearing loss has been attending the school since age 1. The Hamm center has been a blessing in helping her achieve the necessary language and literacy skills to thrive as a child who uses spoken language to communicate. Small class sizes and excellent teachers and staff who truly care about the students has been one of the biggest assets. Highly recommend this school

My child is hard of hearing. Our Georgia Pines representative suggested that we should try out the Speech School. At a year old they started to sound the alarm about my daughter having issues and started suggesting various diagnoses. They would do testing with her in English but lacked the ability to test her in the language she speaks at home. Eventually, they had what I'd call an (ambush-style) meeting where they told me if she wanted to re-enroll she'd have to be evaluated by their recommended physicians. When I responded that I would bring their findings to my pediatrician, I was told that our pediatrician was not qualified enough to handle this type of situation. My response in this meeting was, "Where did you go to medical school?" The room went silent. We pulled her out of this school shortly after this incident and sent her to an immersion school. In the following years, I've found two other families that have gone through something similar with this school.

Guess what? My daughter ended up being a normal bilingual four-year-old, who wears hearing aids. Despite receiving an angry call from the headmaster who "hasn't been wrong in 30 years." If you get the creepy vibes from this place after touring, trust your gut. Research who's running this school. This place is extremely divisive in the deaf/hard of hearing community. A lot of that stems from the demographics and the situation that I've described above. I highly recommend being there during a fire drill or ask if you can walk around and peek into the classrooms of the two other schools...

Our son has attended Kenan Preschool for the past two years and we are truly blown away by the community of parents and teachers. It is an amazing learning environment where your child will become a well-rounded, intelligent and thoughtful preschooler. Expect to have your child come home sharing new ideas and concepts. The staff here is so gentle and loving. My son enjoys each and every day he spends in this wonderful place and we will be sad to leave this truly wonderful school.

If I could give the Atlanta Speech School 6 stars I would. It has been the most amazing school for our 3 daughters. We have had children in both Kenan and the Wardlaw school and they both have had amazing experiences. The teachers in Kenan gave our daughter an excellent education. Kenan balanced traditional structure and discipline, with amazing teachers in the classroom. Our other 2 daughters have been at the Wardlaw school for 4 years and are leaving this year. They have had the best teachers, administration and resources. We are so blessed to have a school in Atlanta that can help students with such a range of learning disabilities. They are leaving the Atlanta Speech School with amazing reading skills and confidence to conquer any learning obstacles that they may encounter. The headmaster of the Atlanta Speech School is AMAZING. His office is at the front of school and he may know everyone of his 400 students names (as well as most parents). He works around the clock with the faculty and parents to make the Atlanta Speech School the best school for learning disabilities in the country.Any child that can attend the Atlanta Speech School is lucky to be there.

Our experience at The Atlanta Speech School has been nothing short of outstanding! Our child is a bright, smart, artistic, happy child who is also dyslexic and has some expressive/receptive language difficulties. We have seen 1st hand, our child flourishing over the past 2 years in their summer programs, learning lab and soon to be a student at Wardlaw. The teachers we have worked with have been caring, encouraging, supportive and fun!

Based on my experience, this school is not intended for kids who truly have speech problems and/or learning disabilities. I believe they are looking for "ready made" kids who just need a little boost. If they are receiving any funding from the U.S. govt., I highly suggest a re-evaluation of their criteria because there is a significant lack of cultural range and versatility present in Atlanta Speech School. To that end, your child will have an unfair advantage if they haven t been exposed to the material the school uses for testing.

Our son attended Speech for five years, in three different "schools": one year in Stepping Stones preschool (very nurturing emotionally and good OT, but not great academically), one year in Kenan Kindergarten (worst year of my son's life -- an undiagnosed learning disability was inaccurately treated as lack of ability or effort and he was pretty much ignored by the lead teacher, who is no longer there), and three years in Wardlaw elementary (which finally addressed his academic needs, but did little for his OT, Speech and emotional/social needs). I'm giving the school an overall four star rating because they did teach my Dyslexic/ ADHD son to read and excel academically, and the Wardlaw teachers/administrators are very knowledgeable and well qualified. Just plan to seek your learning assesments, OT and Speech Therapy elsewhere, and don't expect them to deliver all they promise....

The school does great things for children with disabilities, but one division, the Kenan Pre-School isn't on par with the rest of the school due in large part to the laziness of the lead teachers and Program Coordinator. They talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. I would give the other divisions 5 stars, but I am being nice in offering Kenan a mere 3 stars.

My child was a student in the Hamm Center for hearing impaired children. This is an amazing school. The teachers are very dedicated, great expertise, quick response to concerns. Everyday they bring excellent instruction to the classroom. While it is quite expensive, it is worth it. Many adults are amazed that my child is deaf.
