This school failed my kids. They didn't enforce or follow through with my sons 504 plan. If your child needs extra help- go far away from this place. They will get left behind. They only care about the rich academically blessed towne lake kids.

Etowah High School is a large school with so much diversity from students to studies. The classes offered at Etowah are amazing and the school community is so much fun to be a part of.

My son entered 9th grade last year and it was his best school year ever. Teachers held him accountable but contacted me if there was a disconnect. We had a new algebra teacher who was not ready in Aug. 1 meeting with admin and she had the support and resources a brand new teacher needs. My son, the teacher and the whole class went on yo be very successful. I liked all of the teachers. The faculty I encountered was tuned in and helpful on many levels. Best year ever. You get what you put into it.

As I parent in the district I am very concerned with the climate in the school. The stress, the expectations, and the evaluations have caused the atmosphere in the building to be very low. I listen to friends, professionals, and students talk about the inner workings of the building and I am alarmed at what I hear. Very little of what goes on in the building has to do with keeping the best interest of the students in mind. When I listen to my child I hear that the teachers are never teaching but trying to get massive amounts of work done to look good on paper. My child says a lot of his teachers never teach and are unavailable to any of the students' needs. It's a shame that the students are getting lost in the political shuffle at the school. They should be the number one priority and it's not like that anymore. There are special privileges for certain teachers while other teachers aren't even aware of advancement opportunities. It seems to be a popularity contest of who gets placed at the top and who gets recycled. I am concerned with the turnover in the building and we as a community need to plug in and make appropriate changes so that our teachers are protected. We need more opportunity to survey what's going on from the top down so that we can make sure our kids are going to school where the teachers are content and able to put education first and politics last.

How can they be effective with all this workload dumped on them? I hear it from teachers I know and it's discouraging to hear how overworked and unprepared they are in the school. Even if ratings are high, I don't know how they can be when I hear what they are going through. I know several people who have a degree and do not want to teach anymore.

I hear mostly complaints about the work load and the appropriateness of the content. Due to the fact that textbooks are eliminated the teachers are left to write everything and that is awful. I am a parent who doesn't know how to link myself to appropriate content because the standards keep changing. It seems ridiculous to leave teachers to write their own curriculum, especially for new employees transitioning into the school. They should have resources to help them become adept at the content.

No because there is dishonesty from the top down. Students have figured out that they can manipulate the system to get what they want.

This school, so far, has exceeded my expectations. The faculty and administration genuinely care to help the student body succeed academically and socially. Further, they go the extra mile to bridge the gap between the classroom and home. Parents are empowered with multiple mediums to help them gain awareness of their child's progress. Kudos to Etowah's faculty and administration!

We have been extremely pleased with this school. Your child will get out of it what they put into it. The Principal is very involved and truly cares about the students. Most of the teachers we have been involved with have been willing to provide any extra time and help that the students need.

My daughter failed her English class. Why? No one seems to know. Also it's funny that she failed this class but then went on to get stellar SAT scores!?!?! What? There are TOO many students in this high school. Parents are expected to keep up with their childrens' grades but the grades are posted so late that it is too late to take any action. I can honestly say that I don't recall either one of my parents having to look at my grades in high school. That was MY job. Get it together. Hold students responsible for their work. If they don't do it, then ask the student why. Why do the parents need to even get involved with this issue? I am a straight A student all throughout grad school. By high school, it's up to the student. What are you teaching students when you think the problem has anything to do with the parents watching their childrens' grades via a non-updated grading set up online?

Muy four kids graduated from Etowah,as did two of my grandchildren. A third will graduate this year. The school was good back when my kids were there; it's excellent now. The average SAT scores are higher than the national average! Any parent who says "the school" failed my kids needs to examine his or her own priorities. Do you check to be sure your kids do their homework? When they bring home a bad grade, do you make an appointment to discuss it with the teacher? It sounds as though many of the complaining parents don't want to take any responsibility or get involved to any helpful degree. Education is a JOINT effort. You must do your part. (PS--I am not, and never have been an employee of Etowah or any other school.)

This school failed my child as well...he is not a motivated self starter and the school did very little to help him. Eventually he dropped out :o((( and got his GED. His GED score was very high BTW. He didn t even have to study to pass it. It tells me that he is a smart child, just not your average child and unfortunately this school did not recognize it and did not help him stay on track When he dropped out, he had F s in every subject except Science . He had an A in Science. This should have told the administrators and educators something about him but it didn t they just let him fail I am still sad even though it happened several years ago

This school has failed my child in many ways. All I hear is how it is a Blue Ribbon school. If your child is one who is a motivated self starter, then this school is probably great. If your child is not, they will do nothing to help them. My child is nearing the end of his freshman year and has failed all of his core classes. Repeated phone calls and emails to get him help have done nothing. I was recently offered a program to help him re-cooperate his credits. This program will cost me $400!! All because his teachers didn't care enough to help him not fail. And if your child's teacher recommends they come in for after school "tutoring", don't bother. Their idea of tutoring is to hand your child a packet of papers and expect them to complete it while they sit at their desks on their computers. NEWSFLASH! If my child is coming in for tutoring, he doesn't understand the work! He doesn't need to make it up, he needs you to teach it to him! This school is the worst and I am moving my family just so he and my younger children can have a decent education.
