Our child is currently enrolled at OGE. After attending another public elementary school in the Lakeside cluster, Oak Grove was a breath of fresh air. Our experience has been amazing for the past 3 years. My child requires a 504 plan, and the support we received has been easy and encouraging. The teachers are phenomenal, communicative, and its apparent they love this school and community. The parent engagement is truly impressive and its a tight-knit, kind, and inclusive community. We count ourselves so lucky to be at Oak Grove.

OGE is more than we could have dreamed for in a school. We moved to this area based on reviews of this school and our expectations have been exceeded.
The teachers and principal are amazing, attentive, great communication, and genuinely know the students. The Principal literally greets each student by name each morning as they arrive, its incredible. They provide frequent communication and updates on students progress and school happenings.
The gifted program is strong and the school test scores are consistently high.
The education is well rounded, art, music, fitness, STEM and all essentials are taught along with relevant history and special projects that the kids love .

There is a strong PTA and foundation who are engaged and support extra programs like STEM teacher, enrichment classes, fun evenings like the school dance. There are a variety of ways parents can volunteer in school like reading to class, book fairs, field day, outings.

This is an outstanding school in a highly involved community of parents.
The teachers are highly trained, most are gifted certified, the classrooms are well stocked as it the amazing library.
Newly upgraded playground and turf are a big hit.
The teachers and principal are kind and caring with students and appreciate the high level of PTA and parent involvement.
There is a well supported after care program and multiple after school clubs like dance, drama, coding, art, gardening, chess to name just a few.
The school art and music teachers help the children put on shows and events which are very popular with the students.
The test scores are some of the best in the county and there is a very well supported and effective program for children with special educational needs, lots of para teachers in classes, speech and OT for those needs.

Oak Grove Elementary is beyond an exceptional school. The teachers are wonderful, engaged, and really care about the progress of the students. The parent volunteer community is strong and a powerful force behind the teachers and staff to add programs and events for the students. My kids have been at OGE for 5 years, and we have had a wonderful experience. I feel that OGE is giving my children a very strong educational foundation to build upon in the future.

OGE is a gem of a local school. It rates highest in its cluster and is among the top 5% performing elementary school in the state. The staff and teachers are wonderful, with excellent support for special needs students and provides weekly emotional development groups for those who need a little extra coaching.

Both my children are on either a 504 or IEP plan and Oak Grove does Inclusion right! We have had an amazing experience with all the teachers, and most classes are co-taught with 2 teachers to 22 students. The PTA and Foundation are very involved as well as parents at the school. I could not recommend Oal Grove Elementary enough

Here are some updated data with regard to how the students at Oak Grove ES are doing. Currently the average class size is approximately 50-55 students. For the former Oak Grove ES students that recently graduated high school in 2023, there were 5 students that qualified as semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program. Four of these students enrolled in and graduated from area private high schools while the fifth graduated from a DeKalb magnet HS.

To put it into perspective, the number National Merit semifinalists produced from a single class of Oak Grove ES was equal to that of Lakeside HS (3), Druid Hills HS (1), and Dunwoody HS (1) combined.

OGE is highly under rated. If you look at our test scores we are a 9 out of 10. Even though it is a Growth over Proficiency school. However this website includes other insignificant categories that drag the numbers down. My experience is that the staff is using solid learning tools and that they do care for all types of children. If you are worried about Covid, and you want your child to receive a great education, then OGE is the place to be. The distance learning model needed a few tweaks at first, but now it is humming along. I am typically a very critical parent. I rarely write a review. I have to say their performance as of late has really impressed me. They receive the highest marks I can give. Along with a few donation checks as well....Keep it up OGE

Oak Grove Elementary is a great school in a neighborhood with predominantly college educated and professional families. The teachers and administration genuinely care about the children and the combination of good schools with supportive and motivated families result in real learning with test scores that reflect that. The Oak Grove Foundation and PTA do a tremendous job with providing enrichment opportunities via strong out of pocket family donations.

The 'Student Progress' metric looks bad (2/10) and doesn't jive with the high test scores. There is a very good explanation for this - if you look at the class sizes by grade there is a gradual loss of students from the 2nd grade to the 5th grade. The reason for this is that many families opt to move their children into magnet schools or private schools before middle school. So the continual 'brain drain' makes it look like the kids at Oak Grove are not progressing. In reality, the kids are progressing as well or better than their peers - they are just doing so in private or magnet schools.

Oak Grove Elementary is a shining oasis within an otherwise disappointing county school system. Honestly both Henderson Middle School and Lakeside High School have suffered greatly from poor school leadership within DeKalb County. Oak Grove Elementary remains a high performing school for the grade school years. Like many families, you just may choose to move your children before they hit middle school.

We're having a great experience at Oak Grove. My daughter is happy to be at school every day and actually misses it during the summer. The community at OGE is very strong which I think is a big strength for the school. The parents support the school through both the PTA and OGE Foundation. The teachers make learning interesting and fun. Currently, my daughter's class is working on a project involving a 3-D printer. With projects in class, the children interact with each other.
My main concern about the school is the age of it. However, most schools in DeKalb and elsewhere have the same issues unless they were built in the last 10 years.
Overall, I would highly recommend Oak Grove.

I have had one or both of my children at Oak Grove for the past 10 years. As a former teacher, we moved to the area specifically so they could attend the Oak Grove/Henderson/Lakeside Cluster, and we have never regretted that decision. My children have always felt safe and valued a OGE, and their education has been top-notch. Oak Grove is a very active and interactive school. The students are not sitting quietly at a desk all day long. They are constantly working in peer groups doing projects and experiments, and learning both inside and outside the classroom. Yes, they do have a five minutes on/five minutes off talking policy in the cafeteria, but it has never bothered my kids. In fact, my youngest says he enjoys those five minutes of quiet because its the only time he eats his lunch! There are SO many opportunities to socialize throughout the day at OGE, that a few minutes off and on of quiet time at lunch shouldnt be an issue. I think many, if not most, schools do something similar. OGE has so many opportunities for parents to get involved, having both an active PTA and Foundation. I would highly recommend getting involved in one or both as a way to get to know more about the school and meet other families. We have never regretted our decision to move to the Oak Grove area, and will miss it when our youngest graduates!

I've read all of the reviews below and I agree that while academically OGE SOCIALLY guided. I've seen children as young as kindergarten at "time out" tables when their violation was non-malicious but rather wiggling, not sitting still, etc. The lunch room monitors are strict about talking to an excessive degree - I've personally seen children publicly called out and embarrassed for talking during the music. Why not let them talk quietly so they have even more opportunity to work on building relationships?
Recess is already concerningly short in duration (20 minutes including the time to/from the classroom, so 15 minutes at best), but to have children sit out of recess entirely or walk laps for infractions that happen in the classroom is not only an unrelated consequence, it is counterintuitive to letting them burn off energy that may have caused the misbehavior to begin with. My own kindergartner has had to sit out of recess which blows my mind for a 5 year old. I have had these conversations multiple times with teachers and the front office over the years and nothing at all has changed or improved. I was even told "we don't have silent lunch," and yet the many times I have visited for lunch I personally heard the lunchroom monitor sternly say, "when the music is on, there is absolutely NO TALKING." Social development is not black or white, or one size fits all. Rules should be followed, but someone needs to pay closer attention to the social training provided to these extremely impressionable children before they're shipped off to middle school with low self esteem and fractured social confidence. These days that is almost more important than grades and "10s."

This school has deteriorated. While some of the teachers are good, most do not care about the children or the families. Many of the teachers are bullies to the children and the families. Some significant changes need to be made immediate in the faculty and with the principal. This is the 3rd principal in the past 5 years and she looks the other way when innocent children are being bullied and harrassed by other kids and by some of the burned out hostile teachers. Screaming at little children does nothing to instill confidence let alone a desire to learn. Avoid this school until there is a total overhaul with new leadership in place.

Our 2 years at Oak Grove was an amazing experience. We never regretted choosing Oak Grove over private school. The teachers were fabulous and the 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Bolsen was the best teacher I have ever met. We highly recommend this school.

This is our 6th year at OGE, and I've seen a progressive decline in leadership and methodology. We've gone through 4 principals, with the current one being a non-existent presence. Previous principals were pro-active and visible in hallways, at functions and events, and engaged and communicated with parents. Due to the principal turnover, there has been some teacher attrition, and new teachers have not yet found their rhythm within OGE.

Most discouraging is the establishment of rules to control students at times when they should be allowed to let off energy. In addition to the mind numbing classical music silent lunchtime, my child's class is regularly made to walk laps at recess instead of playing, because though only a few students were "talking in the hallway" or "acting up at lunch", the entire class is punished as a group. The "acting out" behavior in itself doesn't seem enough to warrant punishment for the "few involved", let alone everyone.

For the past three years, OGE instituted a rotation system in 4th grade where students have 4 teachers. It's taught our child to be flexible and to deal with multiple learning styles (positive), yet the coordination and communication among teachers seems to falter, causing homework overload, multiple assignments and testing on same days and general lack of awareness as to the individual needs of students. Parent teacher conferences are only staffed by the homeroom teacher, who has limited information for other classes.

Our last child at OGE has increasingly struggled due to these and numerous other reasons, leading us to explore alternatives for the next year.

I chose this school over private school for my two daughters. Great school, amazing parental involvement. Would like to see more "specials" like library and foreign language and more after school offerings (golf/tennis). Love the school overall though.

Principal turnover is terrible for a school and we are on our third Principal in the past four years. Our new Principal seems to bring little direction, personality or presence to her position and rarely interacts with the children or the parents. An inordinate amount of focus on being quiet at all times (even during lunch) and a minimal amount of outdoor time (20 minutes) doesn't allow for socialization or time for kids to develop relationships with each other. I appreciate the passion our teachers bring to their positions, but also feel that at a 1 teacher per 25 kids ratio, that the class sizes are too large to focus on each child's individual needs or to give extra attention to kids who need it- and they all need it at one point or another. If you were thinking of moving to this area solely for the school I would urge you to reconsider.

I believe Oak Grove is a good school, however our experience was not great. My child began in kindergarten with a new teacher who was so focused on him sitting quietly every second of his school day that it significantly affected his confidence. During the in class assessments, if he became distracted and provided a delayed answer, it was marked as if he had not mastered the material. Many of the older teachers lacked patience in the same respect, not knowing how to channel the energy of the young boys. There is even a time out table in the middle of the cafeteria that was often full with boys who were talking during the classical music period, placed there by the ever so stern cafeteria monitors. It was not until we switched classrooms that we experienced a teacher with more patience, and were able to see the spirit of Oak Grove that many speak of. I do have to say that as a minority I feel as if my son stood out more (in the way that a red sports car speeding on the highway gets the ticket while speeding with the other cars). My husband and I both observed him at school numerous times, even pointing out to his former teacher that she missed other kids doing the exact same thing. She omitted telling us when our son was taunted or hit by other students, and pushed him once which she was unable to deny when confronted in the presence of the principal and vice principal. I honestly lost faith in her. I tried to not let it cloud my judgement regarding the school, but it's difficult. If you are a minority and thinking of choosing this school, or parents of very wiggly, active children, I suggest the following: Be involved. Ensure that they know your expectations. Of course hold your young one accountable, but hold them more accountable.
For us, it was overwhelming to hear our son say that he was not looking forward to school. And that he knew he was going to have another bad day. For that reason we are going private, to a place with a smaller teacher to student ratio and greater transparency.

Oak Grove is an amazing school with A+ teachers, supportive and helpful staff members, and an outstanding new principal! The new principal has completely changed the atmosphere of the school and turned it back into a community school where the focus is placed on the students! My children loved everything about the school and so did I.

I cannot say enough amazing things about Oak Grove Elementary School. My daughter has gone there for four years since Kindergarten. She is thriving academically, socially, and emotionally. The school has a comprehensive, well-rounded curriculum. Oak Grove offers fun and challenging options for students during its aftercare program as well at an additional cost (i.e., drama, Spanish, chess, dance, etc). The teachers are very involved and caring, as are other parents. The test scores are WAY above the state and national averages each year per grade. The student body is diverse and the community surrounding the school is socially liberal. It's just a great place for a child to receive an education!

Previous principal was an excellent speaker and very visible. However she did not follow through on promises. She left suddenly in the middle of the year to go to another school. Teachers have send notes home written in magic marker with mis spellings. Emphasis is on self esteem for students and everyone feeling good. Fortunately student body draws from neighborhood of professionals, hence the good test scores.

I am so happy to go to a school where the principal is so involved, not just on the big issues, but even to visit each classroom to see the students at work! The fourth grade teachers have been great, especially in science and math. I am proud that we are part of this school!

The teachers, staff, new principal and parents pour their talents and energies into making this school one special place for the kids who attend- and there are extra cirricular events like the math superstar program to the science olympiad and there are many events and activities ranging from the multi-cultural festival to the fun run, art night and much more. My now 4th grader loves going to school and I have to say I love volunteering in the outdoor classroom/garden!

The program is excellent, the teacher go the extra mile for the kids, most of the parents are involved, the new principal is great. It lacks of founding like all the public schools but still a great school located in a good neighborhood .

There is an amazing 3rd grade teacher who will blow your socks away. He comes up with incredible thoughtful projects that have taught me a thing or two. I couldn't be more thrilled. The new principal seems to be stepping up the game with the whole school to be on par with this teacher. I am thrilled.

Mrs. Neely the new principal in 2010 is awesome. She is extremely positive, upbeat, and professional. Her dynamic personality and experience is really affecting the school in many ways and her plans for the future will only make it better. Our kindergarten experience was lack-luster but we are extremely happy with first grade and the quality of education at Oak Grove. So many hands-on activities and enrichment opportunities. It's a great community of dedicated teachers and involved parents.
