I have had 3 boys go through this school, all with very different learning styles and needs. I view this school as better than most of the private schools in the area because of all their resources and the the wide array of classes from IB/AP to honors to on-level. We moved to this area of Sandy Springs solely for this school and it exceeded our expectations. Two of our boys who are currently in very competitive top-ranked colleges have said that the Riverwood IB track prepared them very well for their college classes, with one of them even saying that the Riverwood IB track was harder than what they are experiencing at college. The administrators are also very caring and we know them well through our many years at Riverwood!

I had the WORST experience at this school. Most of my teachers were terrible and did not care about the well-being of their students. Riverwood was full of cliques so I spent most of the year sitting alone at the lunch table. The principals attempts to get students to accept each other failed miserably and I feel as though many students just like me are being threatened by undisciplined who don't follow the rules. Most of my classmates would agree that some of the teachers need to be re-evaluated because putting us in their class is setting us up to fail.

Homework was extensive and since school ended so late it was hard to complete with other students wanting to work a job or having after school activities and returning home late

Some of my teachers did not teach their curriculum well and blamed students for failing tests when they did not teach them the material they needed to thrive. In addition, I did not have a teacher in one of my classes until OCTOBER of the school year and when the teacher finally arrives they were very under qualified and not skilled to teach the subject in hand

As a former student, I was threatened during class that someone would shoot me with a glock. My teacher did nothing to ensure that that I did not feel threatened and in the class we were not allowed to pick groups so I was often put in groups with people who would threaten me

Our experience here has been frustrating. Our son has dyslexia and ADHD and as such, has a 504 directive. So far, I’ve had teachers ignore it altogether or act like it’s an imposition to allow him additional time for homework. At the recent 504 meeting with teachers, only four of his eight teachers showed up. (One did, at least, email his apologies ahead of time.) They were clearly frustrated with the 30-minute imposition on their time and barely offered feedback. The one who contributed to the conversation, lectured us about how ADHD and dyslexia were gifts, and how he had 194 students to manage. Message received. Thanks.

I’m uninspired right now. I’d like to think we drew some short straws this year, but so far, I’m seeing a lot of disorganization that’s shuffled off to students. Students are penalized if homework is turned in late, but teachers are slow to get grades updated. I get that they have a lot of students, but if you take 5 weeks to get grades into the system, how are students supposed to know they’ve missed something until it’s so past due it’s an automatic zero? It’s exhausting to keep up with their various requirements, which, again, are not nurturing subject matter as much as they are cultivating a robotic churn without clear instruction.

Maybe. I like listening to Mr. Gardner. There’s a lot of passion there, but the experience in the trenches for us has fallen far short of what he talks about. More importantly, it’s very hard to figure out how to get things addressed. Much of our frustration has been systemic as opposed to specific issues with specific classes, which would be managed with individual teachers.

We are nearing the end of our first semester at Riverwood so this review is hopefully preliminary, but so far, our experience has been deeply disappointing. I’m writing in the hopes it spurs some action because, among my many frustrations, I have no idea how to have a conversation with anyone in administration and not feel like I’m being shoo’d out the door. Our son is a magnet student and is taking two honors classes and an AP. I expect the workload to be intense, but what I don’t appreciate is a pace that expects my kid to teach himself material so that he can complete projects. Example: Last weekend, we had to teach him DNA transcription for an honors bio project due the day after this material was scheduled to be taught. This isn’t an exception in this class, which has repeatedly leaned on technology in place of actual teaching. I don’t know if the teacher is disorganized or incompetent or both, but it’s shameful. As for learning differences, our son has ADHD and dyslexia and as such, has a 504. At the mandated meeting with teachers to go over his directive, the teachers who bothered to show up seemed impatient and in a hurry to leave. I did not feel listened to, and it’s clear from the way they’re managing their classes, they’re not interested in helping a freshman with working memory issues find his footing. Finally, teachers here rely on technology in a way I’ve yet to experience at any other school. Because there’s no standard, my son navigates five different platforms nightly to review upcoming assignments and turn in homework. I’m hopeful much of this is just a tremendous ramp up to a large public high school, but so far, this is experience has fallen far short of what we’d hoped for him.

We moved to Fulton County so our child would have smaller classes and more support for his learning issues. Riverwood did not disappoint. The teachers and support staff were awesome.

The majority of Riverwood teachers are amazing! The administration encourages them to do what works in their classroom. Some classrooms are filled with technology and some are filled with beanbag chairs for lounging. The teachers truly care and love what they do.

2017-18 Riverwood opened an entire hall dedicated to students with learning disabilities. There is a coffee shop on that hall that is completely run by students. They have made it a fun and friendly area for everyone.

The school has provided her with diversity, an excellent curriculum, safety, encouragement, and various opportunities. Halfway through my son's 9th grade year at Riverwood and we are very pleased. We moved into the district for the school and can now say it was a good decision. I am very impressed with Principal Dr. Shaw who appears to be on top of everything and promotes excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts equally. We just attended the school musical and I was blown away - it was outstanding and I forgot I was watching high school kids (and the music was played by the live orchestra from the pit) - very impressed!! My son is happy, has made friends, is challenged academically, and is finding his crowd through sports and activities. Construction has started on the new school building and we're excited to see the new school come up out of the ground. Great Job and Thank you Riverwood!

Our family has had four children at Riverwood. They have all been blessed to be instructed by caring teachers and a principal who demands good behavior. The school and its curriculum asks a lot of students...its challenging. But as my children have gone on to colleges at Vanderbilt and elsewhere they have remarked that they felt their freshman years in college were often just reviewing their course of study at Riverwood. They were well prepared for the next step.

We're about to graduate our 3rd and youngest child from Riverwood Int'l Charter School. After 10 years at RIverwood (19 years in public schools total), we can sincerely say that it's been a great experience overall. Our children are very solid students but not academic superstars. They made the most of their experiences at Riverwood because that's how we "encouraged" them --- even when they didn't want to! They had some stellar and some not-so-stellar teachers...not dissimilar from life when you have great bosses and bad bosses. The student diversity of Riverwood allowed for not only great cultural texture but also reality -- just like what the real world holds. We've watched friends spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on private school education to only end up paying out-of-state/private college tuition. Riverwood (Ridgeview Middle and Heards Ferry Elem.) can be a launching pad to a good university for any student who works hard and gets involved (parent involvement is critical too!). NOTE: Our first was in the Honors College at U. of Ga., our second at Georgia Tech, and our third to U. of Ga.

Again...there are some excellent teachers and some very POOR teachers. Science stinks at Riverwood. The math, english and social studies departments are first class. Riverwood pushes lots of IB and AP classes. He had 9 IB/AP classes by the time he graduated, while most of his friends were getting an IB Diploma and had closer to 15. It's hard academically to manage eight classes at a time (Riverwood is on a block schedule), but studying and doing a sport left him little time to get into trouble. At the time he was at Riverwood, I thought it was too much. But, now that he's in college and doing so well in his Honors classes, it might have been a good way to prepare him for the volume of college work.

My son went to school here for four years. I saw some of his friends get huge penalties for Honor Code violations that would have gotten only a verbal rebuke from his previous private school. They take Honor Code violations seriously! Riverwood is much closer to a University than a high school for culture. They don't care as much about what you wear (you won't see any coats and ties and you might see lots of holes in girls jeans), but they do care about how you act and how you perform on a court and in the classroom. One of the best athletes on his team was kicked off the team for lying about being sick and skipping practice.

My son graduated from Riverwood in 2015. He went to a local private school from 3year old - 8th grade. He was ready for something larger and not quite so insulated. Initially, as parents we did not want to change a "good thing" as he was doing great academically and socially. We attempted to talk him out of going to a school where the teachers did not know him and would not give him the benefit of the doubt if there was one and no one would call us if he did not feel well or do well on a test.
In hindsight, it's easy to see he made the right decision in moving to Riverwood. He met students that came from all over the world, different socioeconomic levels, races and religions (Riverwood is 1/3 white, 1/3 Hispanic and 1/3 African American) Honestly, there were times when things happened at school and we wondered if we were doing the right thing in putting him out in the real world. However, he figured out the system of students, teachers and academics all while under our roof and with our guidance. And, to be quite honest, he probably got in better colleges from Riverwood than he ever would have from a private school in Atlanta.
We loved the administrators at Riverwood (principal and assistant principals) and the teachers for the most part are excellent (Riverwood needs help in the Science department), and you can take as many AP and IB classes as you want without having to write an essay to compete for one of a few spots in private school AP classes. AND as parents, we LOVED the other parents and kids.

Very good administration. Rising graduation rates every year since Dr. Shaw has been at the school. Very good choice of electives. Great business classes offered. Some great teachers and some not so great as you would expect at a public school. A brand new building and campus will be coming soon. The time to move to the neighborhood is now.

Riverwood is an incredible school run by truly dedicated, caring administrators. The student body is happy... and that's not typical for a high school. The students are also diverse... and that makes for a richer, more 'real-world' environment at Riverwood. the IB program is fantastic and the kids who take IB (and the many AP) classes truly thrive. They get accepted to amazing schools that recognize the value of the IB and know of Riverwood's reputation for fostering students who can THINK and LIVE in today's world. I have a student who graduated last year... one who will graduate next year... and one who will start as a freshman soon. We could go anywhere. We chose Riverwood.

Since the school administration changed in the past 4 years, the school went down hill. The principal is unethical and unprofessional.
He removed an honor code for a studentime who cheated on annotations caught by the physics teacher, gave him back full grades from a zero and nominated him for principal award senior year because of the allegiance to a powerful family. He is arrogant and has no knowledge of international as a whole, and no knowledge or interest to IB.
The IB diploma, for the few students who finished the diploma in 2015, was handed the week of college finals, in the middle of the week, most of the students couldn't make it. No one else really cared as for this school it was a joke. We haven't received the diploma home yet. This shows how much IB is important for the management .
The school lost most of their best teachers in the past 4 years and couldn't keep an IB coordinator for more than one year!
It is ashame to see what used to be a great school, go down that fast.
I wish Fulton County Schools stop recycling mediocre principles from neighboring counties and make a serious search for talents.

It is a shame. Money hungry athletic programs. Not only do you have to pay for parking at a public school but you also have player dues and entry fees. If you have a child striving to be involved be prepared to fork out every penny you have not matter what the cause. No parent involvement is understandable considering the greed involved. Good luck.

This school is the worst school you can send your kids to. Unless you want to send them around a lot of descriminating adults. Administrators are the worst human beings, they take their personal anger along to work with them. They treat children like dirt and i would not reccomend this be a school for any new students. My child was harrassed and it is unexceptable. But they have a pretty good lacrosse team!

Any person who writes a review saying that Riverwood does not provide opportunities for a good education is wrong. I graduated in 2011 and although I admit Riverwood seemed to be stronger in Language Arts, Social Studies, and it's great selection of electives over Science and Math, I have had some of the best teachers of my entire educational career at this school. The diversity at the school is also an incredible and realistic experience for students. As an inside source, considering I spent all four years there, too many parents are concerned about what they consider are problems with diversity at the school rather than their own children. The reality is that you are going to find drugs and alcohol at any normal and high achieving high school - ESPECIALLY private schools. But it's up to the parents to instill good qualities in their children to help them deal with the obstacles that high school will show them. So, overall, I had an incredible experience here. Challenging academics, some great school spirit, an incredible Arts program, and a school community filled with all types of students - many overachieving, great, smart kids. So don't let bad reviews fool you.

Riverwood has been such a great experience for me. The school's diversity has given me a sense of the real world and has given me the opportunity to interact with a wide range of people. The education has been amazing. I have always been challenged and have loved almost all of my teachers. They don't just hand your grades to you-you have to work for them and that Is a valuable lesson in work ethic that I'm not sure a private school could Give.

My child is now a college freshman and is suffering from the effects of the mediocrity which is now so prevalent at Riverwood. Even though she was in honors and AP classes, the teaching quality and the content, and the way in which the courses were taught (teach to the test, little critical thinking) have gone rapidly downhill since we looked at the school (and made the decision to transfer from private school) when she was in 7th grade. And it is true -- the drug and alcohol problem IS the worst in the metroarea. That is true because of the school's handling of the situation, but also because of the parents who don't care and aren't willing to be tough with their kids. I hope my daughter's experience at a good, small college can erase all memories of Riverwood.

Riverwood International Charter School may be a lot of things, but it certainly does NOT have endemic racism issues as the obviously disgruntled student below has indicated. The ONE thing that Riverwood has going for it is the genuine atmosphere of multicultural acceptance. That being said, Fulton County Schools is bent on destroying the close camaraderie among the staff that has existed well before the current carrousel of teacher and staff replacement. Apparently FCS is of the opinion that if it isn't broken, go ahead and destroy it. Meanwhile, the staff (teachers and administrators alike) have been experiencing a turnover rate of 47% last year and well over that this (2012-2013) year. Riverwood administrators have shown little inclination to stand up to the pressures instituted by the superintendent of FCS. FCS claim that it is interested in in putting "students first" truly rings hollow as it systematically goes about destroying all sense of self-worth among its employees, especially those teachers who man the classroom front lines. Let us see if the school's (and county's) ranking goes up or down over the next few years and pin that to superintendent's future employment.

SCHOOL SUCKS DO NOT GO!! TERRIBLE STAFF AND STRONG RACISM! The staff and administration lack interest in the students' needs. The racism amongst students is beyond bad, and the staff refuses to do anything about it. If you are African-American, it is very hard to fit in. There is no recognition of black history month or any other black holiday. Reconsider. I attended. Most of my peers feel the same. DON'T DO IT!

Riverwood High School is the most mediocre educational institution I ve ever come across. The faculty and guidance office have no directive to aid students toward success, rather, they believe in punishment as the guiding principle. All parents please listen. DO NOT ALLOW YOUR STUDENT TO ATTEND RIVERWOOD HIGH SCHOOL. The teachers do not believe in helping students in achieving any sort of success. No student actually enjoys Riverwood because of the mindset among faculty that no student should succeed. This is no exaggeration. Riverwood applies rules that does not actually keep delinquent students in check, instead, students who want to achieve further success are restricted, and cannot succeed in Riverwood. Although rules are necessary to keep a safe environment, there lie many unnecessary rules that limit passionate students from achieving extracurricular goals within the school. Other reasons for not attending the school include much drug abuse and bullying. The school s drug problem is much larger than expected. Your student will not utilize his/her full potential and their future will be scarred for the next four years and beyond. Please head my warning.

Riverwood International Charter School has many positives: Excellent Teachers, Involved and Dedicated Parents, Talented students and Leadership that is focused on students and quality classroom instruction. Thanks to a quality reputation, Riverwood has seen significant growth causing some overcrowding issues and larger than ideal classroom sizes. As with any change in leadership at the top (Principal) there have been some bumps in the transition. However, I am convinced Principal Triolo's priorities are spot on. His commitment to High Quality Classroom instruction, supporting his faculty through professional development and reaching EVERY student to help them realize their full potential will set the pace for other schools to follow. There is still much work to be done with the current physical campus challenges to be addressed in the SPLOST funding. I have every confidence with the current leadership, involved parents, and talented faculty...Riverwood will continue the tradition of Excellence for years to come.

Despite a recent decline in the caliber of student that coincided with the increase of student population from 1000 to 1600, Riverwood is still a good school. It is safe. There are a few fine programs for the motivated student (the Art and IB Program stand out). The teachers care and there is a small group of involved parents. It is possible to get a good education at Riverwood, but a student would have to take the initiative and avoid the on level classes that are the repository for the 90% who are doing the absolute minimum or less. The administration is more or less competent, but they are all stick and no carrot. In order to protect themselves they burden the students and staff with demoralizing and petty rules. There is a palpable culture of reproach. Bottom line? The school is not as good as its reputation, but better than most of the public schools in the region.

Please do not consider Riverwood International Charter School if there are other options. The staff and teachers are definitively not motivated to teach. I am a student at Riverwood I have had teachers taunt me, ignore me, use profanity with me, and have even tried to make me do their class planning in exchange for an A in class. I'm being very honest and I have no other way of telling you how horrible this school. I was a straight A student with almost a 4.0 GPA and dropped to a B to C average with some F's. Ask neighbors, Ask Other Kids, and Look over and study this school before considering before your child ends up like me.

I had high hopes as a parent, but the administration and teachers at Riverwood does not compare to the education my older children received at St. Pius X Catholic High School. I can't recommend this school as a parent. We have been greatly disappointed as a family and plan to leave. The lack of respect to the students, lack of parent involvement, and teacher quality are major concerns, to name a few. Riverwood is a major disappointment and it is unbelievable that some parents pay tuition to have their children attend this school.

Riverwood has enjoyed a lot of positive hype the past few years. The reality is somewhat different. Excellence exists in some areas and with some teachers, but it is also possible to have a year in which mediocrity is the norm especially if your child is not in advanced classes. There is very little "school spirit" at Riverwood. Drama and music programs are very good. Unfortunately the drug and alcohol problem is widespread, one of the worst in metro Atlanta. "Rankings" seem to matter more than anything else in too many cases.

Riverwood has turned out to be a HUGE disappointment. My son is in 9th grade so he just started this year. So far he has had two teachers quit and the principal had to resign as well as the athletic director. The majority of the students are out of control. I have seen videos of fights in the cafeteria and it looks like a scene from a prison movie. We have encountered rude teachers (my son told a teacher he needed to check out and that I was in the front office to get him....the teacher berated him the entire way to the lobby telling him that he didn't believe him and that my son was just trying to skip school....when they arrived, the teacher said to me, "he better be glad you're up here") I have also received less than professional emails from some of his teachers that contained inaccurate information. Also, a couple of his teachers have lost several of his assignments !!!!! We are leaving this school as soon as the semester is over!!!!!

The principal of Riverwood just resigned due to "auditing irregularities" meaning he was taking money from the student activity funds (raised by sale of tickets to athletic/artistic events) and using it personally. Stay away!
