We were so thankful to find this school. It was an urgent situation for us to switch our daughter here quickly and mid-year after a significant bullying incident at her prior school (St Gilbert's of Grayslake).
The school's staff at St. John's has given her patience, the kids have welcomed her with open arms. The communication from the school is so much more than what we experienced before, and all without being asked.
The community here is so inviting, we are just thankful to know our daughter goes to school and doesn't come home with bruises anymore.
Besides all of that, the curriculum here and the way it is taught truly teaches a love of learning. Our daughter has been studying Michigan in school, and a couple of weeks ago she came home wanting to tell us about Tulip Festival. Again thankful.

St. John's Lutheran School is an exceptional educational institution as they offer a nurturing and strong Christian based environment. St. John's emphasizes academic excellence while promoting and integrating spiritual growth in all aspects of learning while reflecting their commitment to innovative technology in education. With dedicated teachers and a focus on critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication, I strongly believe each student is well-prepared for future success. St. John's is a community where families feel connected, supported, and loved while focusing on the character development of each student thru strong Christian values. I'm so grateful to have found St. John's Lutheran School for both of my daughters.

My family has had a great experience at St. John's in a variety of ways. Trusted teachers, a safe environment, solid biblical instruction, & an environment that cultivates holistic health for each of my children. Finding the right educational environment for your children can be so hard nowadays, so let me save you some time. Just go to St. John's!

I have two daughters that currently attend St. John and have since they were in 3-year old preschool. We absolutely love the St. Johns faculty and staff and the community that St. Johns parents and children form. Our girls receive a great education and a God centered one also which is important to our family. We are so blessed to have this school and church.

I had one student there during 2020-21. It was great. We are moving out of state, otherwise I would have kept both of my kids there for their entire elementary school careers. All of the staff and parents that we met were great, and that is with a lot being cancelled due to covid. I am willing to guess that it is even a closer community when everyone is able to interact more. I couldn't recommend St. John enough. If you are considering this as an option look no further.

I would highly recommend St. John if you're looking for a private school which provides a Christian-based education and smaller class sizes.
Posted: May 31, 2020
The approach to homework at St. John is very well organized and structured.
Posted: May 31, 2020
Both teachers our child has had have been phenomenal and have provided the extra attention whenever we needed it. Our child's current teacher's clear communication and dedication helped my wife and I navigate the difficulty in homeschooling during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Posted: May 31, 2020
The focal point at St. John is a Christian education and developing good moral character and values. This is important in this day and age given the things kids will see on the Internet and social media.
Posted: May 31, 2020
The leadership at St. John take an active role with each of the students. I love the idea that the leadership know me, my wife, and child on a first-name basis. This is something you would never get in a public school.
Posted: May 31, 2020
We haven't had any issues to make a formal judgement on bullying.
Posted: May 11, 2020
Our St. John school family is our second family. If you are looking for a school where Jesus is taught daily and where you are able to address the needs of your child, this is it.
Posted: May 11, 2020
Homework is very reasonable for my first grader and accomodations are made to adjust to his special need.
Posted: May 11, 2020
The teachers have taken the time to meet with us an address the special needs our student has. They have also worked with us to get help from the public school for our son also.
Posted: May 11, 2020
The most important reason why we love St. John is that the love of Jesus is taught daily. How we live our life is a reflection of what Jesus has done for us.

I can't say enough about St. John. My children are completely their 5th year at St. John's and we couldn't be more pleased with both their growth as young Christians and academically. My son's favorite day of school is Wednesday for Chapel day. We are grateful that God's word is an intrical part of their day. As a military family moving around so much it can be difficult, but the care and compassion that the staff and teachers provide to the children are second to none. We also enjoy seeing how well the children mix together to play and how the older ones look out for the younger ones. We are blessed to be part of the St. John family.

I can't say enough good things about our school. I was able to attend school here and so did all my children. A great atmosphere, with challenging academics, amazing teachers and staff, and best of all, it is rooted in the Word of God.
The kids began e-learning on March 16. The teachers, like all current teachers, were faced with an enormous task being unprepared for the switch to immediate home learning. They stepped up to the plate and delivered, and still deliver, quality structure and content through Google Classroom and Zoom.
My daughter's teacher is accessible, responsive, and on top of her game. She has gone above and beyond in so many ways to ensure the education continues during this challenging time. I am so thankful for that.
We appreciate the teachers and staff at St John Lutheran School.
Highly recommended!

My children don't require special intervention in this area so I don't have personal experience but I've seen kids get moved to advanced classes if they have the aptitude.
Posted: August 28, 2019
There will always be behavior that needs attention no matter what school you attend. As the class sizes are smaller and the school itself is smaller it can be harder to separate yourself from a child you have issues with. However learning to get along with personalities that conflict with yours is a part of life and a necessary skill. Anytime I have felt a child's behavior went too far I have been able to sit down with students and parents and resolve the issues.

We have had wonderful experiences with each of the teachers at St. John's. While there was a long tenured group of teachers that recently moved on to other opportunities we are thrilled with the current staff. The Kindergarten teacher is also the vice principal and is one of the best teachers I've encountered. She does amazing projects with the kids and really gives them a good foundation. The first and second grade teacher is loved by all the students and is firm but kind. And the third through Fifth grade teacher has high expectations and lovingly directs the students in their studies. All the staff truly care for the students and have their best interests at heart. A wonderful group of people.

Absolutely agree. The kids are taught a Christ centered education and there is an expectation for a certain level of behavior. I feel any issues I've come across (as there always will be as we all fall short of the glory of God) are worked with and children are taught not only respect but forgiveness. There are various opportunities throughout the year for kids to raise funds for various organizations which has instilled compassionate giving in both of my children.

I have never hesitated to bring issues or concerns to the administration and have always been listened to and seen resolution to those concerns.
Posted: August 28, 2019
Overall we are extremely pleased with St. John's not only for the quality education and obvious spiritual growth but for the close knit community we found in the parents and teachers. Our children love this school and we are so thankful to be a part of this family in Christ.

Kids are given free periods to finish homework and if they utilize this time appropriately will not have a lot to bring home. I appreciate that the teachers are willing to work with you. My child was turning in work but it was done poorly so after a brief chat with the teacher I will be reviewing assignments with my child before she turns it in.

St. Johns is a blessing to us. The parents and children are kind. The staff cares so much about the children and the school is very advanced academically. The children learn the word of god and are taught kindness for others. We are so lucky to have found this gem for our children.

My child comes home with more than he can handle. He spends most of the night trying to finish his homework.
Posted: June 23, 2019
The communication is terrible. I ask for updates and copies of report cards and I don't get them. My child was passed on to the next grade only to have the teacher in that grade tell me that she is not ready and has to be put back in the previous grade level for a particular subject. It is a little discerning that my child is being passed around from teacher to teacher.
Posted: June 23, 2019
I cannot really agree with this. It is hard to expect the students to learn these characteristics when the teachers themselves cannot effectviely show them. I have never seen a poorer example than this school.
Posted: June 23, 2019
Clearly the leadership is lacking if nothing has changed in the school and there has been no effort to make changes. The school goes through teachers like crazy. Every year there is a new teacher. My child will get used to one teacher and then they leave and have to learn a whole new style of a different teacher. The school really needs to figure out their staffing.
Posted: June 23, 2019
This part is a joke when it comes to this school. Even though there are not that many students in the school you cannot expect the teacher to handle every single student seperately when there are learning disabilities. It very much shows in this school that they are incapable of handle such problems. Students have been turned away becasue they do not have the means to handle a students disabilities.
Posted: June 23, 2019
They preach that they have no tolerance for bullying but it still happens and efforts really are not made to stop it. Signs and talking to students individually are not solutions. My child was dealing with a bully at the school and I told the child to talk with the teacher about it and the only course that was taking was that the teacher talked to the student one on one and that was it. The bullying continued and my child was scared and unwilling to go to school becuase of it.
Posted: June 23, 2019
Overall my experience at this school was terrible. They are suppose to be a private Christian School but they do not act like it. I saw no improvements while my child was at the school. I pains me to see that a school could actively hear from a parent all the bad things and not really do anything to fix it. I hope that this school can change course and really go in a different direction. If you cannot handle the one thing you are suppose to do which is teach and build life lessons then you should not be open. I would rather this school close than keep going the way that they are.

Each student is taught at his or her level. It's not unheard of for a student to move to another classroom for math or reading. Whether it's up a grade or to a lower grade. No one looks down at any of the students who make those moves.
Posted: September 12, 2018
When there has been any inkling of bullying in the past, each classroom comes together and talks about what is going on and why it should stop.
Things might start, but they seldom blossom into anything major.
Posted: September 12, 2018
I can't express enough what a wonderful school this is. My son has grown in so many ways educationally, but most importantly he has a love of God and a yearning to share that love with others.
Posted: September 12, 2018
The last part of the day is study hall. The students get to work on their homework and get help on it from the teacher if needed. This really frees up our evenings!
Posted: September 12, 2018
My son has been at St. John for over 6 years. His teachers have all been easy to work with and my son have never had any issues with any of them.
Posted: September 12, 2018
The upper grade children are buddies for the younger ones. This really helps the little ones get to know the "cool" older kids.
The older children that have graduated from St. John and come back for events always are polite and have fun interacting with the younger students here.
Posted: September 12, 2018
The students have respect for the teachers, principal, and pastor. The staff and faculty have respect for the students as well.
Posted: July 19, 2018
Some teachers give too much and others teachers don't give any at all.
Posted: July 19, 2018
Some of the teachers have effective teaching styles but other teachers really have no idea what they are doing. They are hindering the students rather than helping them.
Posted: July 19, 2018
The school has had problems in the past with bullying and to my knowledge still has problems with it. Some of the teachers there do not even practice what they preach.
Posted: July 19, 2018
The leadership is lacking. They are more worried about getting students in the school than the ones that are actually there.
Posted: July 19, 2018
I know from first hand experience that this is untrue. Students that need extra help are repeatedly passed over and moved on to the next grade when they are clearly not ready for it. The school does not have ample funds to get the correct help or support these students that need extra help.
Posted: July 19, 2018
I touched on this in an earlier response.
Posted: July 19, 2018
The school experience here was terrible and I hope for the sake of the students it turns around. For now I would recommend that parents take their children to a different school until such a time that this school can get it's act together.

Positioned in a prime location in the heart of Libertyville, St. John Lutheran School is surrounded by top-rated, highly sought after public schools, but still stands out. Relocating with five school-aged children put finding the right schools at the top of our priority list. Libertyville public schools stood out among those in other northern-Chicago suburbs, but dull in comparison to what St. John has to offer. While surpassing the academic standards of public schools, St. John Lutheran School also offers low student-teacher ratio, individualized instruction which allows children to work at their own pace and unique level, and highly-educated, well-seasoned, kind and compassionate teachers. Despite the safeguards put in place to protect the safety and wellbeing of their students and staff, St. John offers a warm and welcoming atmosphere to all who enter. The principal and staff meet and greet students and parents both before and after class allowing constant, open communication. The students not only learn about various cultures and ethnicities through text book exploration, but through visiting with the child sitting to their right or left. They are given the opportunity to respect and appreciate their differences while discovering what makes them very much the same. The strong biblical foundation and Christ-like values instilled by the Pastor, Principal, teachers, and staff at St. John makes us all part of one family. We hope you will join us.

We cant say enough how much we love this school! This really feels more like a family than a school. There is nothing better than watching your little ones be so excited and eager to learn- that is with huge thanks to the amazing and passionate teachers at St. Johns. You wouldn't find a parent at this school that would say otherwise!!!

I have 2 daughters and my youngest daughter currently attends St. Johns preschool. My oldest daughter had attended another preschool program in the area. Now that I have a comparison, I wished my oldest daughter was able to attend to this school. The staff is so much more caring and attentive to the children. The staff is also teaching the children values that will stay with these children for a lifetime. I would highly recommend the school.

My children both LOVE going to school each and every day! We love the safe, secure, family feel that we experience when we walk through the doors. We already know that public school is not an option for us as we don't believe in the direction that they are headed in. St. John is a safe haven that shares our love of Jesus while offering a superior education in a safe environment.

We chose St. John primarily for the Christian education and also made it our church home as well. Best decision our family has made! St. John has provided an excellent Christ-centered education for our sons from PreK and beyond. The faculty is engaging, outgoing, fair, caring, and easily approachable. We couldn't ask for a better situation for schooling and church. Our boys are excelling in many areas of learning and I would recommend St John to all. They offer tuition grants and military assistance and if you are shopping around, you will find that St John is competitive to other private schools in the area. In my opinion, look no further...

Our son is in preschool at St. John, and we plan to send both him and our younger daughter through their grade school years. As young professionals, we value the high-quality, accredited education in a small classroom provided by St. John, and, as Christians, we value the Christ-centered, safe and caring environment in which that excellent education is taught. St. John combines both in a community-centered setting with great teachers who truly care about their students and love to invest in their intellectual education and spiritual foundation.

Absolutely love the Christian education and the nurturing environment St. John's provides for my son. It's worth every penny because I know they care about my son's education and spiritual growth.

My son attended Kindergarten at St. John for the 2011-12 school year. The teachers are amazing - you feel like you are part of a family. My son entered Kindergarten ready to learn (he knew his ABCs and number, could write his letters and numbers, and was excited) and by the end of the year, he was reading books. Parents are kept up to date about what the students are learning and what is coming up next. We live in Great Lakes but were able to find another family to carpool to Libertyville. Even after a blizzard, the roads are clear within a day or two, so we never had a problem getting our son to school. The principal and pastor are great, as well. We really can't say enough good things about this school - I highly recommend it to everyone I talk to. We first sent our son to VBS in June to see if he would like the school, and that sold us on the school year. With three recesses a day, it amazed me that the kids learned as much as they did. My son was happy to go to school every day and they balanced academics with opportunities for movement and exploration. For the upper grades, the classes are small the the students get so much individual attention.

I have had the pleasure of having both my daughters attend St John from K thru 8th grade. I have to admit I was initially skleptical of smaller classes. I felt the more kids the better my kids would be at social skills, develop more friends, etc. I am thrilled to say I was wrong to be concerned. Both my daughters excelled with the close, personal attention. They also thrived in the mixed grade environment alternating between mentoring younger students and being mentored. Most importantly, both my daughters were taught in a loving Christian environment that has provided them both a solid foundation of faith and a discerning heart that they need in the world today. In addition, they both excel in their current schools (one in HS, one in college) and I give the teachers and educational programs at St John much of the credit for their success. Don't hesitate to check out this school for your child.

We love this school! Great school, great teachers and a great, positive Christian environment. We live in Lake Forest (which is known for great schools) but drive our kids into Libertyville to attend St. John. We have two children currently attending and have been absolutely thrilled with both the quality of education and the great Christian values. The teachers really take the time to work with the kids and there are many opportunities to meet with them throughout the year. Plus weekly email updates, monthly parent meetings and many events. Keep up the good work St. John!!!

I have always supported parochial education feeling a Christian education is the greatest gift we can give our children. We chose St. John despite multiple options that would be closer because of the atmosphere we felt when we started shopping for a Kindergarten for my now 13yrd old. This year I will have a 7th grader and a 2nd grader attending and I could not be happier. It did have some growing pains a few years ago during a transition between principals and some teachers. The current staff is GREAT, we could not be happier!
