We chose Manhattan Catholic Schools for the small class sizes and high test scores. However, we have also loved the relational aspect of the community, as well as seeing our kids develop a moral compass and leadership skills.

I am a firm believer in faith based education. I chose to pay tuition and expected a great, quality education with caring and compassionate teachers .
Unfortunately that was not my experience at MCS. Quality of education was not what I expected from a private school.
I must say that I did appreciate small class sizes and the fact that bullying was not an issue for my kids in this school.
I chose not to return my kids to MCS even though we still live in the area. So many factors went into this decision .
My advice to parents is that to visit the schools you are interested and talk with teachers and adminstrators. Talk to parents that are from the area, and also parents that are new to the area . Do your research and that is my honest opinion .

Being a small school our administration is made up of a smaller group of individuals. That at times can be challenging. Our staff does has an incredible teamwork ethic that helps diminish those challenges. We have recently added to our staff and that has helped to divide some of the administration and leadership duties among those individuals.

We partner with USD 383 to provide gifted, Title One, speech therapy, occupational therapy etc. We collaborate to identify IEP or other needs of the student to make sure all needs are being met. Our school counselor is very involved with all the students and has focus groups for those struggling with various issues. We have a military support group as well!

We have a full time school counselor who meets with each class individually working on several issues including bullying. We have small class sizes that allow teachers to recognize issues quicker and effectively address situation in a timely manner.

Our decision to send our kids to MCS has been fantastic. We love the community and family we have become a part of. We enjoy the opportunity to be involved with school activities and committees. The relationships we have formed with the teachers and staff are those that will last forever. The dedication of the teachers is unbelievable. They are all their because they truly believe a faith based education is best. Watching the kids participate in mass several times a week is faith renewing!

Evening routines have gotten more hectic so the fact that the kids are given ample extra time in school to finish their homework is great. If they do have homework it consists of work they chose not to finish during the extra time given or it is for projects that are done throughout the school year.

The teachers at MCS come with experience and a desire to incorporate faith and education into a loving accepting environment. Our small class sizes give the teachers the ability to focus more on each individual student and their needs in the classroom. Our students routinely test years above their grade level which is a testament to our teacher dedication to our children's education.

Our students start helping with mass in Kindergarten and that continues through 8th grade. Our students are involved in several community outreach activities.

My kids who have graduated were very well prepared for high school and my kids who are still there are doing great and testing well. We love the community aspect of going to a school where no one is there by default-- everyone made the inconvenient choice to make the tuition investment in their children. So you have a lot of very involved families who expect a great education for their children. Of course the benefit of going to mass twice a week where the children do the readings and know that the homily is aimed at them cannot be underestimated. They do walk the faith at MCS, not just talk it. Prayer throughout the day, saying the rosary and going to confession, singing religious songs at the Christmas programs... the list goes on and on. Oh and don't forget the uniforms!! Save money and avoid the morning battle of what to wear.

My kids are given plenty of time in school to do homework so usually only have one night a week when they have anything to complete other than long term projects and reading logs.

The teachers here have a true vocational calling to teach. They are here because they care about the students and they put in many hours beyond the school day. Many strong teachers, including the junior high math teacher who puts the kids a year or TWO ahead for high school. The STEM program director enhances the learning in all grades.

Our school counselor has implemented anti-bullying programs for all grade levels and focuses on respect and compassion for all people. In junior high the students are required to do community service, in addition to all the events that the whole school participates in, such as bringing in food for the local food pantry.

Up until recently the principal has been handling too many tasks but with a couple new support staff members hired, work is being delegated and things are running smoothly.

Even though this is a private school, the students have free access to USD383 services for Title One reading, speech, gifted program, and other services needed by those with an IEP. They can also get para's if needed.

The classes are small so teachers are more likely to notice bullying going on even before the student reports it. Of course lots of bullying is hidden from adults so there have been situations that took a little while to resolve. The Student-Parent handbook details the procedure for dealing with it and the system is getting better. There are some parents who are angry that their child was the victim and they just left (and posted poor reviews), but other parents are angry that their child is identified as the bully and asked to not come back the next year. So they post poor reviews. Just being honest!
