This will be our 7th year at MSS. They are not just a school, they are our family. I can not imagine my children being anywhere else. The staff makes the school a loving, learning, pleasant environment that my children look forward to attending. I wish I would have had this kind of education growing up!

Both my children went to Montessori from toddlers through 8th grade. Through the years, they not only mastered the knowledge in a way that didn't let them slip through the cracks, but they developed a love of exploring and questioning knowledge. They learned about the real world, learning how to advocate for themselves and be independent. The social-emotional skills they learned was one of the strongest benefits. Being able to organize and plan was also a huge benefit. Each classroom has at least two teachers, and some have three. Each classroom has at least one Montessori trained teacher with a college degree (many of them master's degrees). The administration had an open-door policy, and they were always ready to work with us however we needed it. We think this is the best school in the world!

Both of my kids attend this wonderful school. My older kid has been at the school for 6.5 years and my younger kid for 1.5 years. Every teacher we've had has been knowledgeable, informative, and caring. They know and nurture each and every student, helping them move along the curriculum as they're ready.

My kids thrive in the go-at-your-own-pace environment (with nudges from teachers as needed) and are absolutely on pace with or ahead of their peers at other schools. This is confirmed by the work they bring home, periodic conferences between the teachers and parents, and standardized testing results. They have a joy for learning that is hard to find in students elsewhere, and it's obvious that they really grasp the underlying concepts behind the things they are learning because everything is taught starting with physical, concrete materials before moving on to abstract ideas.

As an alumni myself, I can attest that the transition from this small private school to a larger public high school was intense, but I felt prepared and empowered to interact with my teachers to make sure I got the best education possible. I was fully prepared academically for high school. I also had the self-motivation and independence to navigate the different learning environment at a public school. I played sports and made great friends in high school, keeping the small circle of friends who came to my high school from MSS.

The number of parents I see at morning drop-off who were also Montessori students while I was there just goes to show how amazing this school and its community is. We are SO fortunate to have this gem of a school in Shreveport!
The highly-skilled and nurturing teachers create a joy of learning, a passion for curiosity, peacemakers, and "out-of-the-box" thinkers.
Montessori is NOT a one-size-fits-all teaching method and each child gets an individualized education that meets them where they are. Yet, most of the students are way ahead academically and they love school! It is, without a doubt, the most hands-on and effective way to learn key life and academic skills.

My children were poorly prepared when leaviing Montessori, with obvious deficiencies in Math, Science and Social Studies, not to mention physical education. Both children had been tested and considered Gifted and Talented and scored in the top percentiles on national aptitude tests when they were in the lower grades. Each year that they were at Montessori, their performance on national standardized tests declined and this was the first and only times that we became aware that they weren't learning and mastering critical concepts and information. Montessori's periodic parent-teacher meetings, reporting perfomance assessments of above, at or below expectations, left us unaware of the weak areas that our children would ultimately score suboptimally in on natiional standardized tests. Ironically, both of our children would consistently earn "above expectation" assessments in nearly all of their subjects. Sadly, some of these weaknesses remain to this day as they didn't get the foundation that they needed to excel in math and science.

Additionally, they had a difficult time adjusting to tradiational school culture including sitting at a desk, taking tests, doing homework, meeting assignment deadlines, and earning actual grades. It was actually the older child, after struggling to adapt during that first year in high school, who implored us to take the younger child out of Montessori and into a tradiational school. We wish that we had done so sooner, as it took a while for our younger child to catch up to greade level, given the large knowledge gaps resulting from her substandard Montessori education.

Also, there is definitely a liberal agenda promoted at the school which we do not believe is healthy for normal child development. One of our children left the school identifiying as transgender and the other identified as homosexual. Both children, after spending time in a traditional school environment, came to the realization that these LGBTQ identities were not who they really were and they blame the culture at Montessori for this difficult period of confusion.

Neither of the children, who are now pursuing post-secondary education, have met their potential and we feel that they have been permanently handicapped by their time at Montessori. It is one of our greatest regrets, as parents, that we comprimised our children's education by sending them to that school.

Whatever you do, if you love your children, DO NOT SEND THEM TO THAT SCHOOL!

Each MSS classroom does its best to meet the needs of all students. Montessori materials are multi sensory and students flourish at individual rates. Students with special needs (physical limitations, ADHD, Aspergers, motor and sensory delays, developmental delays, severe allergies, dyslexia) are in all classrooms at all levels. Students that present with difficulties reading or dysgraphia are identified early, tested and treated with corrective strategies through the Shelton School in Dallas. Resource teachers are on hand at every level to assist students and meet their learning needs as prescribed by external learning professionals.
It is worth noting that MSS is not a special needs school and does not offer special education. It is a private Montessori school. It does not receive state funds for special education and special education professionals like Caddo and Bossier public schools.

MSS offers a terrific school environment. It was a great decision and worth the tuition. We tested into but turned down magnet school enrollment. Magnet schools in Caddo are good but we prefer the smaller nurturing community that allows all students (not only the few that test well) to easily find confidence in rigorous academic work. I know students are prepared well for managing heavy academic workloads in high school, college and professional schools.

Students have individual weekly workplans. When work is not completed during the school day it becomes homework. This begins in E1 (1-3 grades) and weekly studying for spelling testing is introduced. Tests and other work receives marks in the form of number correct or percentages, not grades. To further the learning of content and show mastery, students are required to make corrections.

At MSS character is important. Students are encouraged to work through their problems on their own through various conflict resolution strategies from toddler - middle school. My sons have all become good stewards and citizens of their environments. They have fearlessly travelled across the country and internationally and are successful in their chosen paths. Their ability to work with others and be good leaders AND followers is a direct result of the guidance they received at MSS. They are respectful and compassionate but most importantly they are peaceful and happy young adults. They exhibit a confidence to work through problems and brainstorm solutions - often thinking outside the box - that makes me appreciate the gift of the Montessori education that was given them.

The leadership at the school is good and has an open door policy second to none that I have experienced. Any concerns we have had over the years have been received graciously and with respect and corrected or handled to our satisfaction. With that said, the Montessori approach is not for everyone. Some children do best in a traditional classroom where information is presented in a more disciplined fashion. In these cases the leadership at the school makes that recommendation- leaving some parents to feel that the needs of their child were not met, which cannot be further from the truth. Having to have these conversations with parents is something no administration wants to do - as students are what sustains the school. The fact that the MSS leadership takes the best interest of the child as paramount is testimony to the authenticity of the Montessori experience provided at MSS and a true desire to make sure each child is successful.

The teachers knowledge and patience in working with my son's - 1 dyslexic and 1 with speech issues was amazing. There are a number of teachers that have additional training in reading and dealing with learning differences. Each one of my child's teachers was able and willing to go the extra mile to make sure they were comfortable and on target with their age in curriculum and instruction. My son who is dyslexic wants to become a writer!

I love this school! My son's coaches and professors have all commented on how respectful, creative and knowledgeable they are. They are willing to take chances, fail, get up and try again leading them to even greater successes. It has been a joy to watch them become the people that they are today; something I feel that the experience at The Montessori School for Shreveport helped to provide them.

Traditional homework is minimal. Students spend 7+ hours in class during the day - their evenings should be filled with family time and exploring their community and participating in extracurricular activities. This "free" time afforded my sons the opportunity to learn an instrument and to become passionate and highly competitive in their sports. A bedrock principle of the Montessori approach is to foster the development of personal responsibility - in all areas of life. My boys attended MSS from toddler through middle school and have become talented, confident and creative in all aspects of their lives. This approach allowed/taught them to plan their work plans around out of town tournaments so that they could be successful both at school and in their sport - a life skill in learning to juggle 2 demanding jobs. While there are not school sponsored sports teams there are parent led teams for soccer, t-ball, gymnastics, weight lifting, running and many other sports both boys and girls- spanning all age groups. There are a number of students who are competing in their sports nationally and internationally-all made easier by participating in the Montessori approach to education and minimal homework.

The teachers/guides at MSS are an amazing group of talented and highly educated individuals, some with 20+ years in education. Many have masters degrees and beyond - all lead teachers are certified Montessori Guides and each classroom has an assistant teacher and even a 3rd helper that floats between classes for additional support. Many if not all of the assistants are certified or completing certification- a very rigorous process in itself. Lead guides are certified in the grade levels in which they are teaching. In lieu of the traditional report cards, Montessori parents have a 1 on 1 meeting with their child's lead teacher 2+ times per year in which the teacher presents the student's work and goes through every subject noting the child's strengths and weaknesses. As the children get older they are responsible for presenting this information to their parents in a teacher facilitated meeting. It reinforces the accountability for their work as an individual and as a part of the community. Teachers are in constant communication with parents through phone, text, email or in person. I consider my sons teachers as members of our family - they are absolutely committed to making sure each child receives what they need to become successful. One of my sons is dyslexic - the support he received through the everyday curriculum and the specialized services that were offered has led him to become a highly successful happy student who loves school. The administration goes above and beyond to make sure that each child is a good fit for the classroom that he/she is placed in. As a former educator, I can say without hesitation that the professionalism and education of the MSS staff is above par. They take a personal interest in making sure that each child is meeting his objectives in a manner that is most beneficial to that individual - a daunting task, but done with love and mutual respect.

Bullying is rare but in the years my son has been at the school my experience is it is dealt with and not swept under the table or rationalized.

Students are encouraged to consider what they prefer doing at home vs at school. They consider what personal time to do work they have each day at home, and they plan their work out each week, choosing what to work on at school and what to work on at home.

This school has meant the world to both my children. Ive had the privilege of seeing them both grow up there, and weve gone through each class level of the school. My sons years in middle school have been some of his favorites. Off-campus PE connected him with coaches of various sports and exposed him to sports he may never have tried otherwise. He is now an avid basketball player and golfer. The adventure trips built his confidence tremendously; the science labs and projects taught him critical thinking and hands-on experience; his research writing and creative writing improved; and his confidence with math soared. Clearing the nearby trail and bayou, doing woodworking, building a chicken coop, and more work with the hands filled that need that boys have of working and creating with their hands. I cannot say enough, as the parent of an adolescent boy, about how grateful I am that he went through his middle school years at a place like this school.

This is an area where MSS excels. Children learn to respect each other and to resolve conflicts on their own. However, the children leave the school lacking some of the interpersonal skills required to effectively interact with kids from other schools who are more confrontational and less respectful. Many of the kids attend the school because of learning difficulties that pose greater challenges in a traditional learning environment. The MSS class structure of combining 3 grade levels, 1-3, 4-6, 7-8, allows weaker students to perform a lower grade level and work at their own pace. This is double edge sword, as without grades on tests and homework, parents don't get regular or accurate feedback on how their children are progressing and performing. Parent teacher report forms use categories describing whether the child is on target, ahead or behind expected. Unfortunately, this does a disservice to the exceptional or gifted child, as they are not appropriately pushed to meet their full potential but rather to perform at the class average. The parents often don't know their child's areas of weakness but eventually discover them when they take standardized tests. Its often a surprise to learn that your child doesn't adequately grasp some basic concepts in math, English, science and social studies. Angie and the school downplay the results of the LEAP and other standardized tests, claiming that in other school's teachers teach to the test instead of promoting a love of learning. In addition, much of the Montessori curriculum and learning materials are basically the same as what is prescribed and commonly used by children who are home schooled.

The school policy is that bullying is not tolerated. Of course it occurs to some degree, often by the children who enjoy favored status in the school by virtue of the fact that their mother is a teacher, or friend of Angie, or both. Bullying by children without most favored status is not tolerated, and those children are often dealt with excessively harshly. Political correctness is part of the culture there and failure to use the proper terms is often labeled as insensitivity and bullying. On the positive side, as there is no formal athletic /physical education program and no organized school related sports to speak of, boys who are not athletic do well there and are spared the bullying and ridicule that they would likely have to endure at other schools, less tolerant to boys that don't adhere to traditional male behavioral norms and community standards of dress and play. Freedom of individual expression is promoted and each child's unique characteristics and differences are celebrated. LGBTQ children and families are welcome. MSS is safe place in this regard. In this way, children are exposed to different views and lifestyles and not only learn tolerance for others but also feel free to develop their own identity, whatever it may be.

I feel like it was a mistake not to leave the school after the 3rd grade. I strongly believe that my child will not meet their full potential as a result of being unprepared academically and emotionally after leaving the school. The class sizes dramatically shrink as you move past the 3rd grade, and particularly in 7th and 8th. Consequently, its very limiting in terms of the number of kids their own age a child gets to socialize and form friendships with. The lack of school sports and PE results in a disproportionate number of girls, particularly in the upper grades. My experience is that this has a negative impact on normal teenage social development. The overprotective culture at the school often produces children who are emotionally immature, like mine was. In that way, my child remains behind their peers in high school. The school highlights the accomplishments of recent high school graduates who are alumni of the school. The fact that only 9 are listed, demonstrates just how few students remain in the upper grades of 7 and 8. What is misleading is that generally, it is only the children that are doing well that stay and are ultimately included as graduates. What you don't see is the countless number of students and families who leave the school in the lower grades due to poor academic performance, or a host of other reasons for dissatisfaction in the school, its culture and the administration. As such, the school's stats are horribly misleading. It is accredited by a Montessori specific credentialing body as it cannot meet the standards of a traditional school. I truly believe that the school harms for more children than it benefits. I cannot overemphasize what a mistake it would be to send your child to this school. For whatever reason, this message has not gotten widespread dissemination, despite the fact that there are so many dissatisfied parents who also made the mistake of choosing this school

Many if not most of the teachers are not qualified and don't meet state standards to teach in LA public schools. Montessori has its own accreditation standards, which are not very stringent. Many of the teachers are basically classroom moms who do Montessori online courses and assistant teach the class before getting their own class.

If your child is different in any way, don't send them here. The pressure to have my child tested for Asperger's or some other autism related issue was almost immediate and continued throughout the year. Terrible communication with the teacher we had. Really, it was nonexistent. We switched to our neighborhood public school and my child has excelled ever since.

The administration is a poor representation of Maria Montessori's vision and mission, focusing on shoe-horning children into their ideas of conformity, rather that meeting children where they are. As a result, MANY area children have been asked to leave because of physical issues like gross and fine motor delays, aspergers, sensory processing disorder, etc. If your child has ADD, you will be heavily pressured to medicate them.

The administration at this school is its downfall. From poor implementation of Montessori philosophy to unfair treatment of students to very low teacher morale, this school, which was once a beacon of excellence in the community, is a blight on the Montessori name.

These teachers love my children and care for them like they were their own. Great parent-teacher communication and the administrative staff is always avaIlable. Yes, parents are required to volunteer a certain number of hours but that is up front in the contract and is a huge part of building a community. I enjoy the time I invest in my childrens' education.

This school is truly amazing. At first my son had a bit of trouble adjusting but now I am simply dumbfounded at the change he has taken. I brought them an unruly child that i was not sure what to do with anymore. Their methods and patience has really just made him blossom and has taught us a lot as well. High teacher and staff involvement and co-operation is top notch here. This is also a parent owned school which means parents involvement is not only highly encouraged but required. This is one of the most important parts of having a full learning experience. the montessori method is just phenomenal. The Journey presentation is a must to get the full understanding of why this school is so successful!

The Head of School is not qualified for the position she holds. As stated in The Montessori School for Shreveport Staff Handbook under Qualificiations, Skills, and Abilities for Head of School: Master's degree or equivalent in education or related field, or have experience in a previous position and have demonstrated competency in the areas of administration and educational philosophy; knowledge of developmental, safety, and regulatory issues surrounding schools in the state of Louisiana; and so forth. The MSS Board of Trustees is aware of her education (accounting). She clearly is not qualified educationally and does not understand children. She does not put the needs of children first with every decision as stated in the handbook. I would not rely on this individual's advice regarding children.

We have been with MSS for 2 years and it is absolutely the best choice we could have made for our child's education and well being. I have found the teachers and staff extremely knowledgeable and accessible. I love volunteering for the school and feel like we get hands on experience in seeing how the school operates. Reading some of the reviews below, I can honestly state our family has not experienced any of the negative things listed. I would highly recommend this school for self motivated students and families.

This school has a rich Montessori tradition that is being eroded. Most of the staff are not certified to teach anything and the bare minimum are certified to teach n a Montessori school. The rest of the staff is made up of mother's of current students so the school can save money, I would never be able to recommend this school to anyone based on the current situation.

This is a wonderful school. My children have attended MSS for many years and it has been a great environment for them. They have had excellent teachers (except for one who is thankfully no longer at the school). I would recommend taking a tour of the school, watching how the class rooms operate, observing the interactions between the students and their teachers, and making an educated assessment of the school for yourself.

I have two children who attended MSS from the age of 21 months through 8th grade. Most of their teachers were phenomenal and kept my children engaged and challenged. My children never wanted to leave school when it was time to go home because they were so close to their friends and teachers. This was true of most all the elementary children I came across. When any problems arose that needed to be addressed, the teachers were very knowledgeable about my children and wanted to work closely to resolve any struggles. The staff is very dedicated to the school. It seems parents would want this approach rather than rely on report cards and impersonal ties to your child. A private school should expect parent involvement and every teacher my children had invited us to observe their class room. As for tuition, it is one of the best schools in Shreveport, with one of the lowest tuitions!! High school teachers love kids from MSS, stating that they are able to think for themselves, are self motivated, are able to organize their work, and are respectful. I have found nothing but willingness in the staff at Montessori in addressing the education of my children. It's a great school!

The Montessori philosophy is brilliant. They respect the child and foster independence and individuality. I am for it 100%. The teachers are great at this school. But the administration is not that great. Poor communication and very much driven by money. There is a lack of support and team leadership. The director is not qualified to be in her position. As a former employee, I wouldn't recommend being employed there at all. They overwork you and don't respect you as human being. The director has unrealistic expectations and has no business working with kids.

My child has attended Montessori since age 2. I couldn t ask for a more marvelous, rewarding, & academically fulfilling experience for her. Immediately my wife & I knew this was the place for our child & she loves this school. Her reading & math skills are far beyond what mine were at her age. Unique programs like the outdoor nature classroom are exemplary. The positive, approachable, dedicated, highly competent staff & leadership have embraced our family as part of a community. The school provides a nurturing environment for children while providing an impressive array of learning materials--balancing structure with independence. Our child s passion to learn blossoms at Montessori thanks to the active involvement by teachers. The classroom observations have been eye-opening. The yearly Journey explaining the curriculum for the upcoming year makes me wish I had been a student here. Volunteering is a joy & I value its role in keeping tuition affordable. As a practicing physician & subspecialist surgeon, I enthusiastically support this school & recommend its curriculum under the guidance of the marvelous teachers to other parents & their children. My children have been at Montessori for 5+years. This will be our last year there. Initially, I LOVED this school. The pre primary & kindergarten classes were amazing. Most of the 3 year olds were reading. Now, you would be lucky to find one who could read...My youngest child just "plays all day". She might as well be in daycare. Actually, she would probably learn more there! All parents are required to volunteer 10 hrs each (20 hrs per couple). They say this is to keep "tuition cost down" but I don't find their tuition to be any cheaper than any of the other private schools. They also have an annual drive and expect every family to donate money. If you don't donate, the staff is rude to you. They also do a fundraiser and make every family purchase tickets to sell. Of course, they are impossible to sell, so again, you are paying for them. The staff seems "burned out" and little education is taking place in the lower levels. A few years ago, Montessori was the place to prepare your children for Magnet. Now, I doubt any of the 4 year olds could place in any of the Magnet programs. The principal is very close minded & doesnt listen to the parents. She only cares about $$$$.

MSS is a good school, but there are some questionable things about it. Montessori is no doubt one of the if not the best education your child can receive. I have had problems with one teacher , but since then she has left. There are somethings about the close minded of the leadership in the staff. It has shown that this school is probably the best education ever. Many of the top graduates in Louisiana are infact from this Very MS. By the way it's Montessori not Montessory ! FAIL
