Students have a chance to excel in academics and lots of extracurricular activities. Fort Polk provides resources through Army Once Source or Army Community services to assist with deployment. The Staff at Deridder High treats our kids like family.

There are lots of opportunities to travel throughout Southwest Louisiana to support the kids and the Deridder Dragons have great spirit.

I agree with some of the other parents posts, Deridder Junior High staff seems to little to no control over their student behavior. My child also has been a victim of bullying with minimal help from the staff. There's almost no homework being brought home by my child, who gets passing grades. We are also military, this is our second time here to this area. While this is a step up from the schools right outside of base, it's still a poor education system here. We chose the lesser of two evils. Not only is the school behind the national average, it's in poor conditon. My child wont even use the bathrooms because they are in such disrepair. I would reccomend a private school if you can afford it, none of the public schools in the area are conducive to learning. I'm sure people who've lived here their entire lives can't understand the complaints. I feel bad for my children. I'm just glad we will rotate out in a few years, hopefully the schools here won't have them too far behind when we move.

We are a military family with two daughters that attend Derrider Junior High (6th and 7th grades). The staff are not equiped to accommodate the military families with deployment needs (i.e. counseling support groups before/during/after deployments). The teachers are not trained how to work with students with disabilities and the curriculum is not set up to allow the students to gain the skills required to be successful later (i.e. study skills and organization). I would like to see the sixth and seventh graders required to take a study skills class where they get these skills. Also, offer time in the day for students to work on large projects and learn more about social skills of being a teen in a public school (i.e. how to recognize and handle bullying; correct social interactions as teenagers, etc).
