This is a great school that still has a small town feel. The community supports it and the teachers are mostly a part of the community.

Again, the staff seem to downgrade the students as if they aren't in a position where they are building character.

Everybody at this school is basically on their own because again the staff doesn't care . Either walk on or get walked on.

The school needs to be updated. The staff needs to be put in place and do their job to make the students feel heard and understood regardless the situation. The students are fending for themselves because you either walk on or get walked on. The school as a whole is not somewhere I'd send my child if I was a parent.

The homework that is assigned to the students all add up to many hour shift after school giving no time for life outside of school such as a job or sports.

Staff seem to only be there to get a paycheck. They aren't very effective nor do they make the students feel heard.

I have three children who went to Southern for all four years. My oldest is a graduate of Clemson University and is a Mechanical Engineer working for Bosch. My second offspring earned an accounting degree from Virginia Tech and is a CPA at BB&T. My third has an Industrial and Systems Engineering degree also from VA Tech and is now in the naval flight school at Pensacola. I am not trying to boast but I believe Southern did a good job preparing my children for the next level. It has the advantages of a smaller school but provides ample opportunity for students to pursue a variety of interests.

I am currently a tenth grader at Southern High. I understand what most people are saying in the comments. Southern is a joke. Most of the teachers here could care less whether you fail or pass. All they want is a paycheck. But there are like 5 or 6 teachers here that actually want to see you go above and beyond and become something better. I had a teacher that told me if I didn't like the assignment we were doing in class I could sit there and fail. I never said I didn't want to do it. I was just asking a question that he didn't like about it. But as a teacher, I feel like you're suppose to want me to succeed. But he could've cared less about what I did.

Southern High School is a unique to say the least. The administrators there are horrible and practically suffocate the students. Parent involvement is not welcome whatsoever. Bullying at that school is out of control and is not taken seriously. The school is filled with sex, drugs, and alcohol. Its as if the faculty and staff there are ignoring things that should be brought to attention. My child is a freshman there and once this year is over, I'm taking him to a better school. I am not happy with the atmosphere of this school.

I have been very pleased with the education that my son has gotten at Southern. My older daughter went through 12 years of pricey prep schools when we were living in another country with more problematic schools. I believe that the education at Southern has been richer than her experiences. The art and music programs are outstanding. He has had the opportunity to take a variety of AP courses, which is unheard of in some other counties. My son has a physical disability and his administrator tracks his progress and often writes to me if he feels that he is slipping in any area. I do believe if you just check the grammar in some of the parent and student responses giving negative reviews you will see that it needs a little work. Just saying ,,,,, the people who are complaining may REALLY not be college material.

The staff at Southern High School went above and beyond to ensure that myself and many other students graduated with an understanding of the wide variety of courses that were taught there. Friendly and firm, they guided me throughout all four years that I was there and helped me graduate with pride. Go Southern Bulldogs!!!

This school doesn't deserve the blue ribbon status. The teachers and administrators care more about appearences than the students. Any student problems are ignored and parent involvement is not welcome and is limited to getting funding for the school. The attitude that my son has encountered is that he 'just might not college material'. As a teacher and parent, this is unacceptable.

Administrators do not respond well to parents concerns all they do is sugar coat it. Teachers are more of a joke than anything
