I attended Broadneck High School, and honestly, the reputation it has is completely overrated. The only reason people think highly of it is because of the football teamonce you look past that, the rest of the school is a complete mess.

The administration does not take 504 plans seriously at all. If you have accommodations, dont expect them to be respected or enforced. Students who need actual support are left on their own, and the staff seems more interested in brushing issues under the rug than doing their jobs.

The student body is another nightmare. The majority of kids here are obsessed with popularity, and many are just plain mean. If youre even slightly differentespecially if youre neurodivergentyoure basically setting yourself up to be bullied constantly. And when the bullying happens, dont expect teachers or staff to step in. They rarely do anything about it.

The school environment itself is also disgusting. Its extremely unhygienic, with dirty bathrooms, trash piling up, and a general sense of neglect everywhere. On top of that, fights and drug use are common, and the schools response is practically nonexistent. Its like the administration pretends its not happening, even when everyone knows it is.
Overall, Broadneck High School is not the great school people make it out to be. Unless you only care about football, youll find its one of the most disappointing and toxic environments you could put a student in.

Horrible school. Would not recommend. Do nothing administration. All sorts of students now go here who live way out of the area and they are not in the APEX program. Unqualified teachers (some who are not even certified to teach). Bullying is also a problem and they do nothing about it. Always side on the side of the bully. Bathrooms are disgusting. Kids are denied use of the bathroom. Just overall awful. Look for another school. Can't get any help after school. The teachers are allowed to leave at 3:30. So if you want to join a club,eat lunch,need help with work,etc. you can only do that during Bruin Block which is like an hour during the middle of the day. Not acceptable. Lots of fights...almost every day.

I don't know why all the bad reviews. My child has thrived in all areas. Great school counselor, I get great feedback from the teachers through emails and phone conversations to help my child get the best education possible with her 504 plan.

If your child is neuro-divergent or has a barrier to learning, I would encourage you to investigate other options before enrolling here. The teachers make little to no effort to adjust their teaching strategies to accommodate or overcome learning barriers (even with a 504 plan in place), and the administration is generally apathetic to paying any more than lip service to or offering canned resources for neuro-divergent needs.

If your child is white, wealthy, neurotypical, male and has no special educational/medical/mental health concerns they can probably get away with ANYTHING at this school and thrive without much issue. If your child falls outside that narrow definition, proceed with caution. The staff and administrators show deferential treatment for the students who fit in that definition and fail to protect those who fall outside of those parameters from hazing, bullying and even repeated assaults that happen in plain view of staff. Students seeking help from staff for anything outside of academics is not encouraged or facilitated in any effective manner. If your student struggles with mental health concerns, I recommend avoiding this school completely. The PVA program here is extremely intense, rigid and high pressure. Students who find themselves struggling can expect to be expelled from the program instead of being offered the appropriate supports to succeed.

Broadneck is more diverse than it used to be, has taken on many new staff members recently and turned over some of the coaching staff. As a teacher and coach here, I will definitely be bringing my child here - Ive taught at other schools in the county and the opportunity to be successful here is more readily available. There are a variety of different reviews on this site and I would encourage anyone who is unhappy to seek the right people to talk to- there are numerous educators, administrators, and coaches who are on the side of students and what is best for them.

Broadneck is an okay school, but its certainly not as great as the pushy realtors and community ravers will tell you it is. The test scores at Broadneck are better than the test scores at most other AACPS high schools, but the school is nearly 80% white with a low-income student population under 10%. Considering the fact that Broadneck serves quite a homogenous and affluent area, the test scores are very disappointing when you compare them to schools around the state with similar demographics. There are several schools in other counties that are taking on a much larger percentage of disadvantaged students than Broadneck that still manage to blow it out of the water academically. Broadnecks equity rating in academics should concern everyone as well. How does a school with such a low FARMs rate have some of the worst academic outcomes for disadvantaged students in the state? Teachers are good, experienced, and responsive in my experience, but admin not so much. Theres a good variety of courses to take (both standard and honors/AP), so theres something for kids with a lot of different interests. Verdict: Broadneck is an average school that is pumped up by pushy Annapolis area realtors who want to cling onto its golden days reputation from the the 1990s and early 2000s. Im someone who graduated from one of the high schools in AACPS that most parents avoid like the plague and I bought a house in the Broadneck district because of the reputation the schools had when I was growing up, but Ive been disappointed the schools, to say the least.

The administrative staff just shows up to collect a paycheck. Good luck finding anyone who tries to be helpful or is capable of figuring out anything. The staff will be retaliatory any chance they get.

My daughter graduated from Broadneck in 2020. We moved into the school district because we wanted her to specifically attend Broadneck, as it has an amazing music department. It is the magnet school for music in Anne Arundel County, and it has an excellent program for those students called the Performing and Visual Arts Program. (PVA) The PVA program is different from any arts curriculum I've experienced.(I'm a former music educator myself.) The faculty for the program are highly trained professional musicians hailing from big name music schools. My daughter gained invaluable performance experiences, and a solid education in music theory while going to school at Broadneck. All of this translated into her becoming a Flute Performance major at UMD, with basically full-ride scholarships. The academics at Broadneck also helped my daughter to be accepted at all of the universities she applied to. (She took A LOT of AP classes, lol.) Each department has full offerings, so each student has many choices to match their interests. Now, I just wish I had moved into this school district sooner, so my daughter's older siblings would have had the same opportunities.

So far great experience even through the pandemic, my teen actually enjoyed the online teaching. She is now back in person 2 days a week and is looking forward to going back full time next year.

We have filed two bullying reports in one year. NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. We aren't in the IN GROUP that has money in this school district. It's al about politics and money here.

They bully special needs students and make fun of them. They are constantly saying hurtful things to my other son, pulling his hair, calling him gay when he is not.

They bully students that are any race other than white. They target mixed and black students. They do not protect special needs students in any way. EVEN with filing two bullying reports. The witnesses lied and did not tell the truth, so it isn't being dealt with.

God awful. Do NOT send your kids to this school if they are any race other than white. Do NOT send your kids to this school if they have any kind of special needs. It is an absolute nightmare. I have written complaints from the school all the way up to the highest person in special education for the state, also the superintendent with no response, and Senator Reillys office and was told that I don't need their services. This disease is vast here.

She enrolled at Broadneck at the beginning of the year; she had a 504 from her previous school. At the end of last year, I asked for an IEP meeting so I could discuss with her team whether she should have an IEP due to her slow processing and ADHD. At that time, I was more frustrated with my daughter; like most teenagers, she wasn't trying her hardest because she's not very excited about school. So, when they showed that she was making improvements when she put forth more effort, I agreed that she did not need an IEP. However, part of showing responsibility and maturity is recognizing when something isn't working and advocating; she did that with Geometry and was told to just "get used to it". "It" being the teacher's ineffective teaching methods. Pointing your finger to a the problem and saying "This is what you need to do" does not qualify as teaching.

In the 3 incidents that my daughter has told me about, none were handled in a way that would teach her that the staff at BHS holds integrity, compassion, and respect in high regard.

Leadership does not communicate with teachers and students whatsoever, making everything a guessing game. Administration tries to distance themselves away from the other stakeholders. Students and teachers are told everything at the last minute and get reprimanded by administration for asking questions.

New administration and leadership at this school is making Broadneck go downhill from what was once one of the best schools in state. The new principal is more focused on delivering his personal agenda without considering what effects his ridiculous decisions have on students and teachers who are the most important stakeholders. Administration is extremely out of touch with its students and teachers, implementing ridiculous new rules and making unnecessary changes such as Bruin Block that take away important instructional time from students, most who treat Bruin Block as a social hour anyway. Administration acts as if they are doing students and teachers a huge favor by making these silly changes and making people on the outside believe that leadership is involved in their students' education, even though they aren't. Broadneck teachers are some of the best in the county, but they are being deprived of resources and support by administrators that is needed to maintain the high standards present with the previous principal. As a student who just graduated, it is disappointing to see such an excellent school get turned upside down by incompetent and ineffective management.

Students are punished by administration for being honest while those who lie are let off the hook. The attitude exhibited by some of the administrators sets a poor example of how one should act.

My oldest two children both graduated from BHS and now my youngest child attends the school. We moved here specifically for this school. We thought we wanted to move to Severna Park, but I'm so glad we didn't. The school is racially diverse, the sports teams and coaches are first rate, and the teachers and administration are responsive. My oldest children both graduated from College and have great jobs. Their experience at BHS certainly contributed to their success in life. There are many opportunities for parents to stay involved at BHS and, sadly, I'll bet the parents that gave negative reviews weren't very involved. I agree that sports are a priority at BHS (as at most AA Co. high schools), but my kids all played sports and we had very positive experiences on and off the fields. The teachers are top-notch, too. Yes, we occasionally had a teacher that wasn't great, but that is a life lesson - you don't always get good bosses or co-workers at a job, but you've got to work with them anyway.

Our oldest son has just graduated from this institution and I was less than impressed. Notifications for tardies and absences are on time and accurate but when my son had his phone and wallet stolen from him during school we were not notified.
Also I was lectured by the staff (as were all parents) concerning my son and underage drinking during sports. A zero tolerance policy...except for the kid who got alcohol poisioning a month earlier at a homecoming party, he was still allowed to participate in winter sports. There are NO ethical standards or accountability at this school.

Broadneck is an amazing positive high school. I absolutely love it here, and would never trade high schools. The teachers get to know the students well, and we have an awesome supportive principal. I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Broadneck so much. I am sad that I'm graduating. So many positive people, top-notch education, great clubs, music, sports, etc. We have an amazing, welcoming student body and I couldn't ask for more.
