Worst school ever, curriculum is bad, students are rude to each other. Not safe to students of the black race that are not African American, if you are African you will face xenophobia. Not safe to those of LGBTQ identity, will face homophobia even by those who are queer themselves due to internalized homophobia. Fights break out every other day, male students harass the girls.

My daughter is a seventh grade student at mattawoman, she has been through SEVERAL issues, and it has been as if the blame was put on her. she has gained depression, and anxiety due to this school. since those two high schoolers broke in, she has been scared to even walk down the band hallway. this is insanity and this school is HORRIBLE.

it’s a horrible school it gave my child really bad depression the school is very dirty and disgusting. My child has mentioned there were cockroaches everywhere. He also mentioned he had a horrible experience with many teachers and staff members.

When I worked at Mattawoman this school I was a counselor for the 8th grade students, the teachers were horrible towards students not acknowledging how smart and brilliant they truly were the hallways and classes were horrid to be in as the smell was terrible and the environment is all around really school I don’t think anyone should go to this school ever if they want their children to be safe.

Alright listen, I don't know if this is just middle school or not but man, I love school. I know that sounds weird people always say "I hate school" "ah wanna go to school". That was me but now I like going to school. It's my social life, yes ok I don't like something's things about school like work, tests, sitting in class all day bored. But it's the fun moments on 20ish days left of school. I just don't want it to end, I hate to say it but "I just don't want to grow up". I'm not ready, I'm really not. And the reason why I'm giving this a 4 star is no school is perfect. But it's high because having fun with friends, I love the teachers, I love the events, and getting in trouble is kind of fun. Maybe it's not the school but middle school in general but I wouldn't want to trade my middle school for any other.

This school is not good. But not bad either. So far my time at mattawoman has been interesting. Bomb threats, kids with drugs or weapons, someone pepper spraying another. Very interesting. But the school itself is a quality nice school. The teachers are somewhat nice ( I mean all schools have mean teachers). But I feel that they should include 6th and 7th graders in a bit more things. Don’t get me wrong, obviously 8th grade goes on more field trips blah blah. But the only field trips 6th and 7th grade go on, is the yearly trip to the museum. Which in my opinion is boring. Overall an okay school.

This school is a Zoo! The Charles County Board of Education definitely needs to step in and take control. The Students control this school, not the Staff/Teachers. Principal Sonia Blue should be ashamed!!

As a former student, the school is not great, but not terrible. Though my time in this school was also one of the toughest years of my life. I was struggling with depression, anxiety, with very frequent panic attacks. I missed many days of school; when trying to confide in friends, they turned away. My point is; Mattawoman should teach kids about mental health/mental illnesses. For example, I noticed kids at my school would make fun of subjects like suicide, and couldn't understand that feeling suicidal, is not a one time thing. It's always there, the urge to end your life. When going into teenage years, its one of the mainstream times when a person can development major depressive disorder, and anxiety disorder. For me, and many other children I knew struggled with self-harm, so it should also be talked about. I understand that this subject is triggering; but it should NOT be ignored.

They allow children to miss excessive amounts of school without notifying truant officers and will still pass a child that is clearly out of school too much to learn anything. My stepdaughter averages 4 days a month Every MONTH a is getting F's but they still would not let her father know that she wasn't in school. The mother simply doesn't care. The children fight and disrespect one another and their teachers as well.

I have a student who is going to mattawoman for the 3rd year and has been an honor student 2 years prior. Our children learn reading, writing, and arithmetic among other challenging subjects. Children are supposed to be taught respect and following the rules at home first and take that learning into there school life. It is not the teachers job to parent, it is the parents job. Why some parents think discipline is too much because a girl was told the rules and disobeyed and was punished is beyond me. She didn't deserve to walk across the stage if she couldn't be respectful of the rules presented to them multiple times. Suspend the little trouble makers that aren't taught respect. It distracts my child from her learning. The teachers can only do what they can. The parents need to step up and be a parent first. Teach respect, teach discipline, and teach right and wrong to your children at home first.

I have two children who contribute to the small group of students who achieve high grades/test scores in this school as well as clubs. The majority of students take no pride in their environment and I think his is due to the punitive nature in which administration and staff deal with the children. There is a punishment mentality. Things got so bad this year that at the AWARDS ceremony the principal CHOSE to announce publicly to the families that were there to celebrate that anyone who fights gets suspended, anyone who watches gets suspended and anyone who videos goes to the Charles County Public Schools’ special center for poorly behaved students for a certain number of days. While I agree that the fights need to stop, this is not in keeping with the Maryland State Education push for keeping kids in school, nor PBIS.. I wonder what positive behavior supports (PBIS) this principal uses to PREVENT the fights because none of this was mentioned. As a matter of fact, if you are thinking of coming to this school, make sure you ask for suspension record counts for the past three years.
The latest event that prompted me to write a review occurred today at the 8th grade graduation. The principal asked that everyone be silent as the awards were called so as not to have any students’ names unheard. Fair enough and I agree that people should be respectful. When one of the 8th graders in the audience broke the silence, and cheered loudly for her friend when she was called, the reaction to her behavior was to have the girl’s diploma removed from the line up covertly. School staff allowed the girl to walk ALL the way up to the stage and just stand there as those who were behind her passed her by and her name was NEVER called. The girl was left alone at the front of the stage with no explanation for all to see. This is a true picture of the methods used at this school and why the kids are fighting, take no pride in their community. Revenge is not something to be used against children. Not a thought about the girl’s family waiting in the audience. Not a thought about taking the higher road as the adult in charge and handling it later. The child was literally PUBLICLY humiliated. Use of these methods disgust me. Stay far away from this school.

Not alot going into lessons. A great deal of paperwork. Not encouraging creative thinking on the part of the children.

The punitive nature of the administration encourages lying so as not to get in trouble.

Mattawoman is a great school with a great staff!!! All schools have rules dictated by a school board and Charles County is no exception. If there were no rules, parents & students would do whatever they wanted to do. Middle school should be the beginning of the end of the "helicopter" paent.

Mattawoman Middle school is not good at all. Kids get into fights and the teachers can be so rude. I'm a 6th grade student and this is already the worst year. And to make it worst, when you go to a counselor for help, it only makes the situation worst. If i could give this school 0 stars, I would. This school is THE WORST.

I am a student who attended Mattawoman Middle School during my 6th grade career . WORSE EXPERIENCE EVER . The teachers and the Principal are very harsh and cruel and clearly do not know how to discipline students ! Every single day , there is some kind of incident . The students are very rude and disrespectful towards the teachers and other students . I highly do not recommend any one going to Mattawoman ....

My son has great teachers, His social Studies teacher, Ms. Hoover is th best. She keeps the parents informed, she clearly does this because she loves what she does. My sons English Teacher is great as well, she wants the kids to do well. I know good or bad I will be informed and that helps everyone. I can not say I enjoy the behavior issues at Mattawomen but it takes a lot of parent involvement for this to get resolved. When teachers willing to take the time to pick up the phone, email and update their edline frequently they help us all.

My son is in his last year at Mattawoman and I've never had a bad experience in these past 3 years. I must say I am highly impressed with his Social Studies teacher, all teachers should be like her. She makes sure she emails us (parents) their homework and upcoming tests. HIs Counselor is always a call away, I have no complains.

Mattawoman is the worst school ever! If I could I would give them a minus zero! I wish they would rezone so I could get my kids out of there!!

I am new to Mattawoman, but not new to Charles County, so I have a fair perspective of what the standards of a school should be. Mattawoman is BELOW county AND state standards as far as state testing, which basicly explains how well the students are being educated(not very well). Innapropriate behavior and language is very common in the students. The luches are overpriced and unhealthy. Although, I am impressed with the new 7th grade vice principal, because she is not mean at all, but she doesn't tollerate nonsense from her students.
