This school has the bad reputation it deserves. The students are able to flood the bathrooms all day, and there are no consequences for skipping. Your child is just a head there. If your child experiences problems, they will gladly tell you, “There’s nothing we can do.” On PSAT testing days, students not taking the tests simply have no classes until the testing is complete. Office staff is often absent and seemingly overwhelmed. It’s just a poorly run school and it seems the staff are there for no other reason than to collect their paychecks.

This is a very nice school with an unfair reputation as being a bad school. It’s a beautiful new campus with excellent caring teachers. We have great student body and great school spirit. I heard bad things about this school before I sent my child here and all I can say is that it is simply not true! It’s a great school!

d/c: This school (is/was) a 4-year secondary school mostly with students of (ages ~13-19).

-In order to attend this school, I had to qualify by completing middle school and elementary school, prior to my enrollment at this high school. The duration of my enrollment, until graduation, was 4 school years (that would BE:8 semesters... 2 semesters per school year).

During my time of attendance while I was a student at this high school, I had to wait outside on the road at a bus-stop, at dawn; and, the school-bus was almost always there to retrieve the students to the school, and also by estimation at the same place to return students, at dusk.

This school seemed to lack the amount of educative curriculum that would've been required to fulfill a year-round allotment; thus, there were regularly-scheduled "breaks" or "vacations" from the high school, often expecting schoolgoers to spend week(s) without being allowed to attend school.

Furthermore, it seemed that after completion of secondary school, there wasn't any postsecondary school that had already been developed to offer a continuance of a free & open-enrollment education experience that would've been the expectation of the schoolboard. Instead, after passing secondary school, almost all of the postsecondary schools available at that time were extremely expensive in terms of having to pay tuition in order to attend a postsecondary school... and thus, in retrospect: more time during secondary school could've been spent making an attempt to develop a sustainable plan for postsecondary school that would avoid having to place the burden of expenditure on recent transfers from secondary school.

It, therefore, seemed to have built its reputation on false hope -- that students from secondary school would've been able to continue their education throughout postsecondary school, without having the monetary burden of paying tuition with funding that hadn't been made available at that time. The meaningless devotion, to unruly tasks such as "quizzes and grades" could've instead been used to create a sustainably functional postsecondary school, in order to promote the continuance of education for high-school graduates that don't already have funding to pay for expensive postsecondary-school tuition prices.

And, in conclusion it seemed the "crucial or critical" dilemma of this school was: there was alot of tasks, and a lack of awareness that postsecondary school was extremely / inorbitantly expensive, at that time.

I am an alumni from Gaithersburg Highschool and my experience at the school was amazing. I was hesitant about going to GHS because of the rumors, however I can assure you that they are not true. The school is very diverse and offers a variety of classes for students to take. Every teacher that had was very supporting and helpful toward my career aspirations.

I was a teacher at GHS for 4 years, and I absolutely love this school. The diversity is AWESOME! I really believe that GHS is a model for the future. Of course there are ways in which the school can continue to improve, but it is such a great place. I have always felt safe here, love the students, and believe that we have great staff. I have been extremely proud to work here. It is a big school, and that can makes things cumbersome at times, but it is a super school. Our new principal, Mr. Dimmick, is open, communicative, and truly believes in our student body and the positive and exciting power of its diverse makeup. It is an exciting school. Go Trojans!

Amazing. I have one that already graduated and is attending the U of Miami (FL) and is very prepared. Her teachers were always accessible as well as her counselor. The support staff is phenomenal! They all care about the kids. My youngest daughter is a current student and has multiple opportunities to grow both academically as well as socially and physically. Great school! I moved while they were in GHS and made sure our new house was within their boundaries. Hard to find. That's how much I believe in this school.

There has been a lot of negative things reported about this school but that is not the Gaithersburg High School that our family knows. The teachers are caring and motivated to help all students. The students utilize their diversity to make them better learners and people. There is a club, sport or activity for every student and a wide array of class offerings to satisfy students interest in growth in different fields. Especially like the colleges and universities that visit the school on a weekly basis the recruit students.

My family has had a great experience at GHS. My son was admitted to numerous top notch colleges, my daughters are thriving, and we love the community. GHS has an unfair bad rep - it's a beautifully diverse school in a gorgeous facility. The many satisfied families who are part of the GHS community can attest, it's a special place to be.

My daughter is currently a sophomore, and we have been very happy with her experience at the school so far. I am especially pleased with the diversity of the student body. My daughter has 4-5 hours of homework every night, and that's a bit much, but she manages. I am a professor of biochemistry at an elite private university, and I have had several Gaithersburg High School graduates in my classes. They are as well prepared as any of my other students. This also allows me to critically assess her math and science curriculum, and it seems to be adequately challenging. She is learning some of the same things I teach my undergraduate and medical students. When reviewing the school, please keep in mind that students in our county can't just pick a high school. The vast majority of students have to attend their designated school. Thus it is important for students and parents to seek to make the best of their own experience and look at what their school has to offer. If it's not there, insist on it being added. Remember, you attend college based on your own SAT scores, not the average scores from your school.

Both our girls are currently enrolled here and we could not be happier. The facilities are top notch and the programs are as diverse as the student body. My spoiled kids are exposed to the all aspects of the real world in a protected safe environment while having access to AP courses and incredible sports programs. Thank you GHS.

Excellent. My daughter this year graduated from UMD, which is a "public" elite. My son is now a student at UA. He attends on a $114,000 scholarship and has completed his freshman year on the President's list. He took nine AP classes at GHS. There are many success stories at GHS. One of the absolutely most wonderful joys is the diversity of the students. I loved that when my children brought friends home, they could be one of any number of ethnic backgrounds. Many, many countries represented. $1M
reno in 2016. My kids couldn't have gone to a better high school. Do NOT understand the negative comments. There is a spot for everybody to fit in.

Well, let's start with when I first came to GHS.
I didn't feel welcome, at all - ignored and taken for granted actually. The teachers - honestly! It was said that all they want to do is to get to know you more and build a strong relationship with the intention of paving one's path to college. Wrong. It's as if the teachers weren't THERE as the vice principal reassuring the students of what would least likely happen. I'm disappointed by everything. I feel so sad when I see a hallway full of students who dress to go to a club not a business-like environment. My sister, an alumni of GHS, agrees that times have changed since she graduated more than a decade ago. I cannot stress enough how those who are thinking about going here should think differently - aim for schools in more affluent parts of Montgomery County, for example, Bethesda. Chevy Chase more specifically. I felt so lost and quite the opposite of welcomed going to that school. I won't begin to discuss the statistics. Just be careful.

They put directions on the Promethean board and you just do it. If the teacher is in a good mood s/he might elaborately explain what you're supposed to do and ACTUALLY pause lone enough for students to be able to ask questions.

It's just fine. I take advanced classes so I'm not really sure what people taking on-level classes get. But I think it should be a bit more challenging yet exciting.

I have 2 children who go to Gaithersburg High. It's a large school with a new, beautiful facility and sports fields. There are a large variety of classes and plenty of AP and Honors classes to choose from. I have found most of the staff to be extremely responsive and dedicated to the students.

Gaithersburg is a great school. Its a great learning atmosphere. Students and teachers are great and supportive of one another for the most part. Despite all of the bad rumors from the past, the new school has changes the spirit of everyone and Gaithersburg has become one of the best schools in the county in my opinion.

At first I thought Gaithersburg High School was a great school for my child. Yes there's kids who graduate but there's a high rate of drop outs in this school. They don't really give you the help you ask for. I have been asking for help and I even wanted a screening on my child but they thought that wasn't the right desition. If my child and know what's right for my child why would they deny my request. So if they wernt giving me the help I needed I tried to transfer my child to a school that well actually give my child the help he needs but Gaithersburg isn't trying to let my child go and now there saying that I never asked for help.

My review is based on two kids at GHS - one graduated in 2012 the other will graduate in 2014. I have never encountered such a bunch of uncaring and disengaged teachers in all of my life. Only about 20% seem competent in their subject matter or teaching at the secondary school level. AP classes are a joke and dumbed down. Certainly not preparing students for college. The school was satisfied with my son's performance as long as he wasn't one of the students involved in the daily fights, fires in trash cans or gang activity. Took a couple of years of private tutoring to get my son ready for college - GHS teachers - no help. Lazy instructors. School now overrun by ESOL students with the result that the teachers have low academic expectations of the students. Current facility is an embarassment. I have to apologize to my kids for sending them to this school. I noticed no award winning teachers in the last decade due to lack of leadership.

Great school. My daughter graduated from GHS in 2012. I have been more than pleased with the attentiveness given her by the teachers and administrators. When we moved from the Richard Montgomery cluster, I was concerned that she would not flousish. Additionally, I'd heard negative things about the school and it's students. What I experienced was 180 degrees opposite from what I'd heard. The disciplinary problems were no worse than those at Richard Montgomery. My daughter completed three years and with the encouragenment of GHS maintained good grades and is now in college on a scholarship. do yourself a favor and drop by to see for yourself what's happening at GHS. The principal Dr. Christine Handy Collins has turned the school around. Trojan Pride is on the Rise.

My daughter attended GHS in 2011 and I was very unhappy with it. A large number of students have no intention of continuing on to college and some are only putting in their time until they are allowed to quit. I know the school can't control this but all the same it is not an atmosphere that I want my children to be in. My daughter complained of science labs that couldn't be completed because of misbehaving classmates, fights on a daily basis, teen pregnancy, etc. We received a recorded call before the PSAT was administered urging students to attend school and even resorting to prizes for attendance just to get the students to take the test. The few times that I was in the building the security guards did their jobs of signing people in but it was not at all a welcoming atmosphere, I almost felt like I was just an annoyance to be dealt with. I understand that if you take the AP or honors courses you can get a very good education but my daughter is not honors level in every course. She should be able to get a good education in the regular classes. Her motivation to succeed started to disappear. It seems that this school is for honors students and non-students, not average students.

I graduated at GHS 1n 1984. It was a great school then. My oldest daughter graduated from GHS in 2010 and she took adventage of a good education and going to college now. My middle daughter just finished 11th grade and I am very dissappointed. Culture has changed and there are less and less kids who really strive to succeed. I will not be sending my son there in one year and will be moving to another state instead.

Three of my children attended GHS since 2000. All of them excelled in academics with the help of their teachers. Each was able to pursue interests in sports, art, music, and business. Each took advantage of the AP and Montgomery College courses offered on campus. While the facilities were lacking in the past, a new building is under construction.

I will be entering the 10th grade this year at Gaithersburg High. What I hate the most is not the school itself, but it's reputation. Before kids even know the school, they're always saying that it's the "ghetto" school with a bad education; I, myself, used to think that, but I have experienced otherwise. I emplore you to visit the school website and see all that this school has to offer; there are many AP classes (amount fluctuates yearly) and the teachers are great [meaning: for the most part, they're pretty fun, but they know when to "lay down the law"]. The only bad part is how we [students] will have to adjust to the new construction that is currently going on. Other than that, it's a great school with many academic opportunities at hand. As well as supporting counselors that encourage students to try out for scholarships and things like that. If someone tells you that the school is bad, maybe they're only reffering to a student they know or heard of that isn't very...reputable I suppose.

I am currently a Junior at GHS. I had recently written a whole essay, accidentally, on why you shouldn't send your child here however I was unable to send it in so I just want to give a the gist of it. Education is lacking. While temporarily in a on-level class this is what I have heard: "You only need to write a sentence and you will pass the class, so it is important that you are here to copy down this sentence." At first i thought he was joking but never once did a smile crack his serious facade. The rest of the week we did remedial things like coloring and putting the presented answer in a blank. Now you say that this simply may be one bad class however during my extended period in the library before and after school. The only solution for classes like this is taking all AP courses. In addition, drugs, pregnant teens, fighting and stealing are not rare occurrences at this school, pretty frequent actually. Not surprisingly, I am in the middle of trying to get a transfer to another school and would strongly suggest that you do not send your child here.
