I’m thrilled to share how Berwick Academy has transformed our son’s experience through personalized attention, creative PE, and an outdoor classroom.
When teachers noticed his readiness for challenge, they formed small advanced reading and math groups, tailoring texts and problem-solving tasks to his level and keeping him fully engaged.
BA’s lower-school sports program feels like an experiment in creativity: each PE class introduces a novel activity that blends physical skills with academic elements—storytelling obstacle courses, math-riddle relays, and water games. Our son bursts home excited about the new games that build agility and thinking.
A highlight of every week, in the nearby woods, students explore through nature —make class related artifacts and collaborate to create miniature shelters—learning engineering and habitat needs hands-on.
These integrated experiences at BA foster creativity, collaboration, and a love of nature, nurturing our son's growth and confidence.

Berwick Academy provides an exceptional learning environment where every child can thrive. Our son absolutely loves his school—teachers are both attentive and adaptable, striking the perfect balance between support and challenge. For students who are ahead of their grade level, the Berwick team creates customized classes and tailors the curriculum, ensuring each child progresses from their current skillset.
Beyond the classroom, Berwick’s outdoor programs—whether it’s the open-air classroom, snowshoeing, or sledding in winter—add unique, hands-on experiences that enrich the school year. We couldn’t be happier to be part of the Berwick Academy community, and we wholeheartedly recommend it to any family seeking a nurturing, dynamic educational home.

We're about to enter our 11th year (and final as our last child will be graduating) at Berwick Academy. Since the day we became part of the Berwick Academy community, it has been worth every sacrificed penny. We are a middle-income family who would not have been able to provide this high-quality education to our two children without receiving quite a bit of aid over the years through the generosity of BA's financial aid program. While still an investment on our part, the support of BA for our kids and our family over the last decade has been amazing. Our kids have always been challenged academically in the classroom and have chosen to take on additional challenges as well, through the Innovation Pursuit program and Pinnacle classes. Neither are athletes, but they both tried and enjoyed different sports, they've participated in the performing arts program (cast and crew members of the plays and musicals, as well as being in chorus and orchestra, and have enjoyed private lessons at BA with truly wonderful teachers. Beyond the academics, the extra-curriculars, and the social opportunities the kids enjoy - it's the social and emotional support of our kids over the years that has truly meant the most. From transitioning into BA from a terrible previous school experience, to not always making the best choices, to family challenges, to all the highs and lows a kid goes through from elementary through middle school to high school, our family has received an incredible amount of support from the faculty and staff at BA. Our graduate received many comments from her college professors about how well prepared she was for college when she was a freshman, and all of that came from her BA education and experience. It truly has been a partnership in helping our kids succeed, and one for which we are very grateful.

Our experience and expectations have been declining over the years with the price of tuition only going up. Our child's learning environment is rather poor based on their feedback and if you don't "tow the line" exactly, they will ostracize you and your child. The individual teachers seem caring and helpful but there is a palpable sense the heads of school or departments with unrealistic views steer the ship. Communication is often poor and the teaching curriculum isn't held to any state or federal standards. For the astronomical cost, the services would be better at any public school. Do not expect anything extra, class sizes are NOT what they advertise on their website of 8:1, it's 15:1, the state limit, you pay for a sprawling campus that is expensive to maintain with unfavorable management, unclear curriculum, an extremely basic educational institution, and an environment that will force you and your child to second guess their school choice, guaranteed.

As an alum and now BA parent, I could not be happier with the experiences my family has had at Berwick. Our daughters are thriving, learning, and deeply connected to the welcoming BA community. The teachers are on the whole kind, open to communication, and helpful when our kids are struggling. The support services in each of the three divisions are incredible and have helped to carry our kids through their years so far at BA. The opportunities for extra curricular activities, student travel, and outside of the classroom independent work make Berwick worth every penny.

Berwick Academy supported and enhanced our child experience from Day 1. Coming from Canada, it was a big step for our family. Our child and ourselves felt welcomed and supported from the start- we felt we were part of a great community, a second family. Teachers and other students took our child under their wings and ensure guidance in a various way, from how to get to the right place to how to contact the right people when you need something. We saw our child growing in maturity and wisdom within a few months. Our child was surrounded with great people and we were always kept in the loop of what was happening at school. We also had regular communications with our child advisor to ensure our child personal and academic life were following the right path. Our child left Berwick Academy with full of great memories, new friends, and a great foundation to succeed in future challenges.

Since the new head of school there has been no accountability across all areas. Teachers are allowed to do what they want, even when it is not in the best interest of the student. In my opinion I would not recommend Berwick Academy.

To say Berwick Academy saved my son is an understatement. He entered the middle school this past school year and looking back we could not be more thankful. He was unhappy in the public school and felt the pressure of keeping up with the trends. He entered the middle school last year with so much support and guidance. He ended the year very successful with an amazing group of friends. He mentioned to us half way through the year, "I can be myself here with out any pressure". When in the public school my son had an IEP for his learning. We were worried at first with the academic rigor, but the help, support, and guidance he received throughout all of his classes not only gave him the confidence to be successful, but the support to guide him along the way. He felt comfortable going to his teachers for help and realized very quickly they truly cared for his happiness and success. My son is also an athlete. He loved playing a sport all three seasons and the friendships he made during those seasons only contributed to his overall happiness. Berwick Academy is truly an amazing school and we are so fortunate for him to go there.

My two daughters are entering their fourth year at Berwick Academy and they couldn’t be happier. They absolutely love the school and though the original plan was to at least consider other options for high school, neither of them wanted anything other than to continue on into the upper school at Berwick.

The academics are tough but fair and the students have the opportunity to take on an even more rigorous curriculum if they wish to challenge themselves further. The sense of community, especially within the athletic programs, makes them feel very comfortable and welcome each day. They absolutely love going to school every morning. I highly recommend Berwick if your child is looking to achieve high academic success without the unnecessary pressure you hear about so often at other prep schools.

My son is heading into his fourth year in the Lower School at Berwick, and when each summer hits, he can't wait to get back to school to see his friends and teachers. He has made tremendous strides with his confidence and self-advocacy skills, as the Lower School focus on social-emotional learning is central and important to the student and family experience. Teachers encourage students to be their very best selves, and my son has grown to be more empathetic and self-aware, both of which are important to us at home, too.

The curricular experience is unparalleled, and Lower School students have access to the entire campus, including frequent access to an 'outdoor classroom' where they can build, collaborate, and learn to appreciate nature and where they live and learn. This year, they all spent time planting and growing in the school's new community garden, and my son loved that he was alongside the 'big high school kids' while doing so! Teachers work together across subjects and grade levels, and my son tells lots of stories about how he's learning about a Spanish artist, for example, concurrently in Spanish and art class. Or, how he learned about the goslings hatching in the 8th grade science class when they visited with the middle school students. My son comes home each day having been engaged in project-based learning that has left him thinking even more deeply about what he's learning, and asking even more questions about things he's excited about in school. This school is a true treasure, and my family and I have appreciated the school's communication, understanding of who my son is as a learner and a unique person, and their commitment to providing an excellent, holistic experience.

The level of hypocricy at Berwick is so damaging to the students at the school. A do as a say not as I do mentality. Leadership at the highest level is damaging to the long term core values of this institution. Berwick has failed to address issues of discrimination and only supports specific marginalized groups. The teachers are caring compassionate and generally support students academically.

Sending our son to Berwick Academy Upper School is one of the best decisions we have ever made! Everything about his experience has been outstanding and he is thriving. He is so happy and engaged. We have witnessed him discover a renewed love for learning and academic engagement that gives us all the "feels." Most importantly he has found a community of like-minded student-athletes who are supported by the most amazing faculty, staff, and coaches’. BA is simply an amazing institution and we feel blessed and grateful that our son is part of it.

Berwick Academy is a place where I have felt safe leaving my child since he was just 5 years old. Faculty and staff are incredibly welcoming and attentive to both students and families.

From division directors to teachers to administration, Berwick is a community whose main focus is to educate and ensure the social and emotional well-being of its students. The students are also held to a high standard of being kind and respectful to their peers.

I have been pleased with the curriculum and workload, specifically the project-based approach to learning, over the years. The report cards given out each trimester are extremely detailed and it is clear that both homeroom and exploration teachers truly know my child.

The Berwick Parent Community is engaging and active in facilitating opportunities for parents and guardians of all students to connect and to be involved as much or as little as their schedules allow. Our community is geographically vast, yet it is very close-knit.

I recommend Berwick Academy without hesitation to any parent/family seeking an excellent educational experience for their child.

Supportive and truly know each and every student and family. The academic possibilities are endless at BA. So much opportunity to fuel the minds of all the students and to meet every students academic ability. BA also focuses on educating the whole child. Lots of Social Emotional Focus & Community Building. We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Berwick Academy.

As a parent of a Lower School student who has been at the school for three years now, what my family and I most appreciate about Berwick is the attention, care, and support provided to each child and their family. We were enrolled at Berwick pre-COVID as well, and have found the School's leadership, attentiveness to the community's needs, and ability to offer an outstanding educational experience to be unwavering, innovative, and incredibly exceptional.

Each day, my child looks forward to coming to school. He is greeted by teachers who know him well (both classroom and Exploration teachers alike), and who care about his individual interests, strengths, areas of challenge, and his progress as a student and a young person. Our family feels supported by our son's teachers and the Lower School leadership, and we value the family/school partnership that the School itself puts tremendous emphasis on. Each week, my son actively participates in an academic experience that includes World Languages, small group literacy and math instruction, physical education, music, art, library and information technology, and science - all with passionate educators who are experts in those specific fields. Berwick is a place that values each child and family, cares about community and inclusion, and which creates an academic experience that is challenging, innovative, engaging, and student-centric.

Berwick is a an absolutely terrible environment. The school has gone down hill very quickly and the kids are miserable. The amount of money they make you pay is not worth the amount of stress, anxiety and unhappiness. The kids at this school are terribly mean and judgmental. There is an extremely high standard to live up to at berwick and if you don’t meet it, the kids will pick you apart and make fun of you brutally. The academics can be good, or really bad depending on the teacher. But the amount of homework we are expected to complete is absolutely insane. this school will shame you if you are struggling and they do not care about any of their students well being. no matter how much they claim they care about mental health, it is not true. they make kids feel insane for having mental health issues, and only accommodate when it has gotten to a point where you need hospitalization. and even then, they don’t care. They preach cheesy sayings and claim they care about our well being but in reality they don’t. this school is outrageously toxic. please save yourself the money, and your well being. although public school may seem a bit of a step down compared to berwick, i can assure you that any school is better than berwick.

This is a terrible school that almost made me take my own life. Please do NOT send your child here.

Posted: April 12, 2020

They overload homework on students and proceed to shame/outcast children who are struggling.

Posted: April 12, 2020

They can’t seem to help those with different learning styles, you have to learn the info and spit it back out.

Posted: April 12, 2020

Terrible leadership, they can’t seem to understand how to listen to others besides the extremely wealthy.

Posted: April 12, 2020

They don’t offer any help for visual learners, and seem to shame those who have issues taking things in. Teachers are rude about it and will publicly shame you.

Leadership at this school has declined significantly since my kids started here.

Good school but isn't worth the price they charge. They charge as much as prep schools that send a significant portion of their graduating class to ivy league or Tier 1 collages. When confronted with this you will be told that it doesn't make a difference what the name of the collage your child goes to, big miss there.

My childhas been at BA from kindergarten through fourth grade, so I can really only discuss the Lower School experience, which has been exceptional. The sense of community is really impressive. Every teacher with whom I have interacted has been genuinely interested and caring and all of them have been technically excellent. My child has really responded to all of them too. The curriculum is thorough and varied with options available that aren't usually in the area public schools (multiple languages, private music lessons, social emotional learning, innovation program). The class sizes are small and the facilities are top notch (touch tank in the science room, wellness center with test kitchen and yoga space, tablets and computers in all classrooms...). It is a very liberal school with emphasis on diversity and multiculturalism so if that seems too "touchy feely" to you, you may want to look elsewhere, but if you want a high quality education for your lower schooler, look no further. I am so pleased that my child gets to go to Berwick Academy.

At Berwick, our faculty and staff are constantly working to advance the overall student experience. As a school and a community, we understand that feedback from both parents and students is paramount to our success. We strive to continue growing and are committed to consistently improving. Your comments help to affirm what we do well and bring awareness to what we need to be doing better.

This school contains mostly kids who don't like school. It's the place that kids go if they didn't get into a better school, or if their parent forced them to go there. The kids are very clichy and the teachers and administration do not get along well with the student body. The matriculations of this schools says a lot about Berwick Academy. The top two schools kids go to college are University of NH (21) and University of Vermont (16) both of which have an acceptance rate of 77%! You might as well take the picture of your dream house and replace it with your child's diploma if you are happy with your child going to a mediocre at best college when compared to the ~$140,000 of Berwick Academy for high school alone.

My favorite part of my day is my English class. Here at Berwick, many English and history classes are discussion based. Teachers prod and encourage us with questions, but most of the time students arrive in class with ideas and opinions about the current subject we are looking at or the reading we have been doing. We are respectful of everyone's opinions, but I love it because people are also not afraid to speak out, kindly, and challenge others opinions with their own. The intellectual responses to subjects become really creative and make me rethink and recreate my perspectives and ideas. Right now we are looking at some of Anne Sexton's writing, specifically surrounding her transformations of old fairy tales. These poems are filled with cultural references and critiques that are hidden in her language. It is pretty unbelievable.

As a current student of Berwick, my experience has been nothing short of excellent. Coming in as a Junior I was a little apprehensive, leaving my friends from my local public school and only knowing a few students attending Berwick, but almost seamlessly the close knit community made me feel at ease. Everyone was so accepting and kind. My first week at school I had students and faculty coming up to me, introducing themselves and welcoming me, it was so effortless to make new friends. In the classroom, the class sizes are so small that they feel personal. You can't hide in the back just hoping to slide on by, you're expected to engage yourself in class discussions. This has improved me both as a student and person, raising my test scores and encouraging me to take risks and try new things. Berwick has not only given me an amazing education, but has provided me with life skills that will be with me for the rest of my life. I feel prepared and excited for college, thanks to Berwick.

My two children have been at Berwick Academy from the first grade, they are now in fifth and seventh. We feel fortunate to have a school of this caliber in our area. BA promotes a sense of caring and community, provides an arena for children to flourish academically and has the resources to offer multiple extra-curricular activities within the school day. Administration has an open door policy and it has been my experience that they listen and they respond. Faculty are committed and invested and communication lines for parents are always open. The campus is beautifully maintained and welcoming. I wold 100pc recommend BA to prospective families and encourage those exploring their options to come and visit. My children are performing well and most importantly are very happy here and as a parent that makes me very happy!

My Daughter has been at Berwick for 5 years. We moved her out of the public school system that she was in (and that i graduated from). She is graduating this year with options, thought processes, and a grounded sense of herself that I do not see in her peer group from the public school system (who she still stays in contact with). Berwick has been great for my kids, so much so that we put our son in last year after he was having issues in school retaining what was taught (5th grade). He was embraced here, has found a real like for engineering, and is exploring that like within a faculty supported after school engineering program. As always you get out of a school what you are willing to put into it! If the kids are lazy and want an easy ride don't send them here- if they want a real education, and the you want your child to come out balanced, focused and ready to engage college and life then this is the perfect school for them.

Berwick Academy has provided an amazing eduction for all three of my children. They have all attended BA from Kindergarten on - we now have one child in each division. With an economically diverse student body, broad academic offerings (arts and athletics, included), and incredible teaching - there is something for everyone. It's a great place to let children explore their passions, with encouragment from teachers and students. We couldn't be happier with our decision to send our children to Berwick. A true investment in their futures!

I have two children at Berwick Academy and we could not be happier. One of the school's missions is for the students to have balance in their lives, and I think they work very hard at achieving this. The academics are excellent, but not overwhelming to the point that the kids can't do anything else. There are numerous opportunities to pursue individual interests through programs like the Innovation Center, which really allows the child to grow in an area that they are passionate about. I believe that the school gets better with each year that my children attend.

Sending our two children to Berwick Academy was a great decision. They have been challenged academically and have learned the importance of work/activity management. The teachers are dedicated and committed and go above and beyond their roles. I like the size of the school because the staff keeps abreast with everything going on.

I went here for freshman year and it was not a fond experience. Students are rude and stuck up. Very hard to mix in if you dont go from the middle school to high school. Teachers play favorites. School revolves around money and its reputation.

My son graduated from BA several years ago. It was one of the best experiences of his life. An above average student, bored in public school, he truly found his calling at BA. From day one, he made new and lasting friendships, enjoyed playing sports and music and looks back at his experience at this school as the basis for his success. Yes, it is very expensive for an average family and we struggled with the costs, yet we would do it again. Our son now has both an undergraduate and graduate degree and is excelling in his profession. He truly could not have done it without the wonderful teachers and faculty who work day and night teaching, coaching and mentoring. Public school would in no way have prepared him for his chosen career. Please take a tour of the school, let your student take a tour without you, and you both need to ask lots of questions. You and your student will get out of it what you put into it. I am the proud mom of a BA Alumni.

Parents, all I have to say is no matter how great you think this school is, it is not. Just because you get contacted by the teachers and are being invited to luncheons at the school, and just because you get a good impression from the faculty, doesn't mean at all that it's nearly as good as what it comes off to be. If you had to spend every day at Berwick as a student, only then would you come to see what this school is really like. It's really not great academically, the school costs way too much for the type of education it gives. It's not worth it, and the vast majority of kids end up going to some pretty bad colleges for people who've paid as much as they have for this private school. Their little program that helps kids get into college is pretty useless. Even if your public school is a pretty shabby one, I would choose it over Berwick any day.

This school is definitely not what it advertises itself to be, and is not what parents think it is. The school overcharges for quality that is barely ahead of public schools. Is $35,000 per year really necessary for this type of school? Especially one that is so obsessed with athletics yet probably wouldn't care if their music/arts department was completely taken out. It's almost an impossibility for any kid to graduate this school and go into the arts or music. And the student who wrote the immature review below PERFECTLY demonstrates what Berwick turns kids into. Is calling everyone who disagrees with you a "fat butthole" really what this school teaches you to do? And also, does this school teach you to ignore all facts and make up your own? Because the snob (typical for Berwick) apparently thinks that every single person who goes through Berwick goes into Harvard while every Public school graduate goes to juve. In reality, about 1 or 2 kids go on to Harvard, while the rest of the kids tend to go to particularly sub-par colleges. And as an additional note, the teachers think it's a good idea to rant about terribly-misinformed and idiotic right wing politics to the kids.

I attended BA years ago and found it to be a "new money family's answer to PEA". A lot of the students were smart but not bright enough(or "old money enough" ) to attend Phillips Exeter and so their parents sent them here. That said, it was full of insufferable snobs. Academically, I found that the same classes were offered in my local high school. Why spend a king's ransom when you can get the same thing in your public school?

What they say is NOT what you get. Don't waste your money. The school plays favorites.

This school is my life. I graduated last year and I couldn't even imagine where I would be without having gone to Berwick for the past 13 years. The faculty are always, and will always, be there for you with anything you need. Your peers are people who will inspire you and push you to work hard, and most will form life-long friendships. Classes are small, which creates a great learning environment where each student can take part. The Berwick community is one so focused on inclusion and acceptance, everyone is comfortable and can be involved. My only regrets involving this school are the few years I took for granted. Now that I have graduated I don't understand why I didn't cherish this school like I should have every day I stepped onto the campus. Berwick Academy is an incredibly special place.

I entered BA as a freshman from a local public school. The difference is vast. A "bad" teacher here is at least average at a public school. Extra help can always be seemed if you are struggling. This school is much better for some students than others. If you are an academically motivated kid who likes small class sizes, this is definitely the right place for you. The only problem(s) happen socially. Since the classes are so small, everyone knows everyones business. The grade is usually socially split between the students who have attended here from the start, and the hockey recruits who normally arrive freshman year. Sports are a big part of the Berwick experience, and varsity athletes are very well liked by the administration and students. But overall, this school has very few flaws and is a great place to send your children.

Berwick Academy is an excellent place for your child to blossom. They have fun, make great friends and the education is spectacular. I have been attending for 3 years now and I love it! GO BULLDOGS :) -Class of 2017

Our child is in the Lower school in their second year loving it. From the moment we toured the campus, to all the teachers, staff, headmaster, principal we have been delighted with the care and sincerity we have found across the board. Even if the campus were only half as great as it is, (the facilities rival some college campuses), it would be a fabulous education and experience. The school is very communicative with parents, Teachers are kind, fun and expect a lot academically and in creating a great learning environment. Athletics are fantastic, equal billing for both girls and boys sports. There are lots of extracurricular programs starting at an early age, like private music lessons, dance or movement class. In the Lower school literacy, math, history, science, art, gym, computer, music and French class are the norm starting in kindergarten. You have the greatest sense that your child is very well cared for. My child has learned so much and looks forward to every day, not something we saw when attending previous schools.

Berwick Academy sadly had declined because of its insular focus. It is dominated by a Dean who is more interested in his own power trip and process than about the students. Check the stats. There is a big dip in the number of students who start high school and the number who finish. Cliches, poor administration and little support for what is really important - the kids. Favortism abounds.

Run, don't walk away from Berwick! The school is a disaster. The schools that are advertised for college admissions are only ones that a few smart kids get into. Rest got to not that great of schools. It's not worth the money. Administration is petty and self-absorbed. Go anywhere but here.
