The school long ago was a great school. When Doreen Kelly took over it was a slow decline across the board. Many alumnis will not send students to the school for this reason. Athletics use to be strong but have rapidly gone down hill. They are not fair at all across the board and they do not care about school bullying. If you want a loving kind place search elsewhere as this is not the place.

Great experience thus far. Our child transferred from a highly selective high school when we moved mid-year to Raleigh. The transition to Ravenscroft was seamless and the upper school has proven to be academically rigorous while fostering a great school culture.

Ravenscroft is a great school for high education and the teachers are interactive and very helpful. I only gave three stars because there's a lot of sexual harassment, racist, and homophobic comment made by some of the students at the school. This was my experience there as a 7th grader.

The education there is good and they have great classes and teachers, but they can have very backwards policies that affect the female students, especially when it comes to sexual harassment and sexual assault. I can think of several times when students have come to the administration with specifically sexual harassment and sexual assault and the administration hasnt dealt with it properly. Along the same lines, the dress code is very concerned with how much skin they can show, and it very much blames the girls for things they cant control, e.g. distracting boys and such.

I think Ravenscroft does an excellent job of educating the whole child and prepares them really well to succeed out in the world today...the academic rigor is tough but it is more than that, the school teaches kids to be citizen leaders through: self awareness, working with others (that might not look and/or share the same opinions as you) and active listening! It offers a small class size of 100-120 per grade which allows for 10-12 students in each class (at the High School level). With these small class sizes, students are active learners in their education and are engaged with their teachers (and vice versa). All of this combined sends them off, upon graduation, to succeed in college and beyond!

When the oldest of our 3 girls was transitioning from a year-round elementary school to a traditional middle school, we decided to explore private schools in the Raleigh area. We were originally considering making the change because we would eventually have 3 kids in 3 schools on 3 different schedules, and couldn't guarantee they'd even stay in those schools due to Wake Co districting. We thought we'd move our oldest to private and have her 2 younger sisters follow when they started middle school. Once we toured Ravenscroft, we decided we'd move all 3 immediately! We were thoroughly impressed with the arts programs, athletic programs and differentiated education opportunities. From the first open house to now, 2 years later, we are thankful every day we made the change. The teachers are incredible, the girls all transitioned easily and were welcomed by new friends. The differentiated education opportunities allow each of them to learn at a different pace. The "Lead From Here" leadership program designed to create citizen leaders is a wonderful focus within the school that starts with the youngest Ravens and continues through to graduation. The Ravenscroft community of parents is incredibly warm and welcoming, and we have made friends for life. An added bonus that no one could have foreseen but that we are forever grateful for was the opportunity to have all 3 kids in "in-person" school during the challenging 2020-2021 school year. I highly recommend Ravenscroft to anyone considering a private school in the Raleigh area.

Terrific faculty and great learning environment. The school partners with kids and parents to prepare graduates for success in college and life. Class sizes are very small, typically 10 students or less per teacher. Advisory services provide a familial feel and network for students.

I have 3 boys that started Ravenscroft in Kindergarten. They are currently in 6th, 8th and 10th grade. My boys are all very differentwhatever their passion, whether playing the in the string orchestra, being involved in athletics, or nurturing their interests in a school club, Ravenscroft has been a wonderful fit for all three. Their academics are excellent and the teachers are enthusiastic about their subject areas which showsthey make learning fun. Its a huge drive for my boys to happily attend each day. The Lead From Here framework has taught them to be resilient, empathetic, inclusive and growth-minded, which I can see firsthand as they encounter everyday problems. Their partnership with the Social Institute has taught them how to be responsible on social media. Whether its through academics, fine arts, athletics, or character building, Ravenscroft is truly nurturing the whole child and we wholeheartedly recommend it.

We are so happy that we chose to place our two kids at Ravenscroft. My son is in sixth grade and excelling in all his studies, while making good friends and enjoying the school activities.

This is an amazing place and we have loved it from kindergarten and have two children there. I must note reading the review regarding diversity that I am disappointed with their evaluation and also a little dismayed given all I know that the school is doing to promote inclusivity etc. My kids have been in classes with, and have friends that are, students from China, India, Japan, Korea, and much of Africa and Europe. What I hear from my kids is that these kids are not only accepted and included but celebrated for the diverse backgrounds they bring and enhance this culturally rich community. Beyond the first class academics, we have an amazing Fine Arts dept, which produces incredible performances and visual art and seems to become increasingly breathtaking year after year. If you want to see diversity - there it is - everything from Shakespeare to Disney, classical composers from the era of Madrigals through to Jewish and African music and modern pop, rap, jazz - it's all there and provides a first class foundation for the student's life in the fine arts or their deep study at college. Sports are the typical variety and taught and performed well. Each year the school seems to produce excellent teams to compete with other local schools despite not having thousands of students to pick from. Regarding a diversity of student styles - my kids are entirely different. Both needed very different approaches to be successful and the school figured that out very quickly and partnered with us to help understand that and find solutions for each child that were successful. I am amazed at how much this place feels like family - every teacher seems to know my kids by sight and name and as the kids move up are always asking after them and how they are progressing. The only area of diversity which I didn't expect to see at a fairly expensive private school was economic and sure the upper school parking lot has some very expensive cars in it(!). However, the parent body also donates large amounts of money every year, a large chunk of which goes to provide financial aid which 10% of the student body receives in some form or other.

It is hard for me to think of a negative for my experience here but if I had to pick one it would be homework load. As a kid, I had weekends to enjoy - not so much here. But then I didn't attend a private college prep school.

Excellent - I have two boys in the upper school, one is a junior and the other is a senior. They have blossomed at Ravenscroft academically, socially and otherwise...and are incredibly well supported as they pursue college applications.

This school gives busy work. It should be quality over quantity. Our daughter spent hours in front of a computer screen after school. This is an old style of teaching. Most progressive schools want to limit time that students spend in front of the computer. Ravenscroft still believes that more homework for the sake of homework is better than nothing.

There is a sense of entitlement at this school and students show very little respect for those that are "different". If your child is not into sports, I would not recommend this school for you.

This school treats students differently. Sports stars are given passes and students that are "different" get treated harshly. Things have changed at this school in the last 2-3 years. New leadership is needed.

In the last 2-3 years, there has been an increase of racism at this school. There have been various racial incidences through social media, graffiti in the halls and even name calling among students. The school has not handled these situations properly. This is probably why this school lacks diversity in the student body and within the staff.

I wish I had removed my daughter from this school. There is very little diversity both within the student body and the teachers. If you are looking for diversity or if your child is "different", this school is not for you. There are much better schools to spend your money. Those that know the area well know that both Cary Academy or Durham Academy are much better institutions. We waited too long to realize this.

Homework is rigorous but not onerous, teachers seemed coordinated in the amount they're giving (not sure if that's true or if it just seems that way), and if my child misses a day of school, they go above and beyond to make sure he stays caught up.

Poor college placement, average academic integrity, constant fund raising antics...no need to spend 20k per year for lower school when there are plenty of better options in Wake County. We pulled our child after 2 years of what seemed like way too much of an emphasis on character club, diversity, and arts/crafts. The schools integrity is really reflective, in my opinion, of the integrity of the parents that send their children to this school. The children of these particular parents would do well anywhere. However, on the flip side I would be embarrassed to be a teacher at Ravenscroft, with such a wonderful group of parents/students, and produce rather average students based on college acceptances and test scores. Buyer beware...you can get more for your money through charter schools and other independent schools like Thales Academy where the proof is in the pudding.

We have two children in Lower School at Ravenscroft and have be involved with the school for over 5 years. Initially we decided on Ravenscroft based on it's strong academics, fine arts, athletics and other extra curricular programs. Once we arrived we learned there was so much more to it. As a new family to the area, we were embraced by the Ravenscroft Community and found many wonderful volunteer opportunities in the classroom as well as within the Parents' Association. We couldn't have felt more welcome. In Lower School, the Character Tree program is a lovely compliment to the curriculum. Students are taught and understand words like spirit, responsibility, courage, dedication, compassion. Now they've taken it to a whole new level with their partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) and the development and infusion of Lead from Here into the curriculum. We don't know what the world will look like in 10 years or what jobs will be available at that time, but we feel confident that by having our children receive their education from Ravenscroft, they'll be equipped with the tools to lead themselves, lead with others and change their world.

Three words describe the excellence at Ravenscroft for our family more than anything else: nurturing individual potential. As the school mission states: The Ravenscroft community, guided by our legacy of excellence, nurtures individual potential... This is done through the very strong academics, arts, sports and extra activities offered throughout the year which have a wide range from coding to macramé (for lower school).

Our children have had the most loving, caring, excellent teachers. When our daughter was in second grade, her teacher said maybe shed like to stay after school with me on Wednesdays. This wonderful teacher brought her up to speed this way for almost the whole year, to strengthen one weak area, and we never even asked! My daughter has had similar mentoring in her strong area from the wonderful lower school Art teacher. All the regular classes during the day are also excellent, but these two examples showed us how they support a childs weak areas when needed, as well as build their strengths.

Although the school is 150 years old, the administration and Board are looking at preparing students for the future. They show a real commitment to the second part of the schools mission: and prepares students to thrive in a complex and interdependent world. One new way is through a school-wide leadership program called Lead from Here. This was developed with consultation of the Center for Creative Leadership which works with many businesses on the subject. This was the first program they developed for a school.

This is our 10th year with two kids enrolled at Ravenscroft, and it is truly like a second home for all of us. Our oldest is now in 9th grade after starting in kindergarten, and he has had a fantastic experience the whole way through. Our younger child, a 7th grader, has also had a great experience. We have been actively involved in all facets of the school from the Fine Arts and Athletics to being actively engaged in the classrooms and Parents' Association. I attended a private girl's boarding school in Connecticut myself, so I have constantly compared my own exceptional educational experience to my kids'. Simply stated, Ravenscroft has and continues to exceed all of our expectations! Additionally, the Lead from Here program, which is an unprecedented collaborative effort to effectively prepare young learners for the complex world in which we live, is off the charts and setting a new standard in what parents will want for their children in education. I only wish the program was in place when our kids were younger, but nonetheless, we are thrilled to have them exposed to this type of life changing training - far and away exceeds what's offered at any other school in the area. If Ravenscroft continued into college, we'd be staying another 10 years!

We are finishing up our third year at Ravenscroft (K-2) and could not be happier with our choice in sending our son there. The teachers are among the most caring and hard working in the area. Even with small class sizes (15) the teachers divide up their classes in several subjects to assure that everyone's learning level is kept at a challenging pace. As a former private and public school teacher in NY & NC I can say with certainty that Ravenscroft is among the best of any school in either category. Ravenscroft has a very strong Fine Arts program, even in Lower School. What is most exciting is the new Lead From Here initiative that Ravenscroft is developing with the Center for Creative Leadership. I have seen many positive changes in my son as it relates to working with others through collaboration, communication and cooperation. The goal of the program is to intertwine leadership skills into their already rigorous academic program to produce a generation of citizen leaders who will be responsible for running an increasingly complex and diverse World. Other schools in the area have strong academics, some of them strong fine art, but none of them have a robust leadership program.

I have two children in lower school. Academically, Ravenscroft is consistently outperforming the national averages for both public and private schools. The robust academic program includes the arts, twice daily physical activity, hands-on science labs, and fluency in Spanish and technology. Auxiliary programs include private music lessons; choir, orchestra, band, and drama; clubs; and supplemental classes such as computer coding and how to ride a bike! Interwoven into this is groundbreaking character education program and Lead From Here initiative to ensure our children can effectively apply their knowledge in the real world. RS has partnered with the Center for Creative Leadership to develop this comprehensive effort among parents, teachers, and students to change the language of education based on a set of core values: Leading Self, Leading With Others, Changing Our World. NOT just another tag line; it is practiced daily with launch lessons in the classroom, student assessments, parent education workshops and the Parent Leadership Council, and enhanced continuing education and collaborative time for teachers. It's an exciting time to be a part of the Ravenscroft community.

We have a child in middle school and in high school and our kids have been at Ravenscroft since kindergarten. We are very happy with the development of our kids. Small classes - teachers are always available for tutorials before and after school for individualized attention which has been fantastic for our kids - knowing that a teacher is always there and being able to go to them for difficult concepts . We think Peter Bogue is outstanding in what he brings to high school. He is a game changer in our opinion - smart - great leadership and relates well to kids. The Lead from Here initiative is also a game changer for our kids. It is very real and Ravenscroft is the only school in the country that integrates this into their curriculum- school wide. In 15 years - my kids may not remember the details of a book BUT they will have integrated leading self and leading others into their life which will make them better students , citizens , partners and will equip them for the real world. Lead From here is something that no other school can provide on such a wide scale. Ravenscroft sees the big picture of life and is preparing our kids for that

I have three children in the Lower School at Ravenscroft. They wake up each morning excited about the school day. The attention that teachers give our children is unparalleled. The small class sizes allow them to tailor their lessons to children at all different levels and help them excel as individuals. My boys have been given so many opportunities at Ravenscroft that they would have never experienced in other schools. In kindergarten, they were immersed in the Fine Arts program with violin class and all three have chosen to play instruments. Additionally, they have received Spanish instruction, taken weekly technology classes, and have been participated in extracurricular activities, from French class to swim lessons to learning to ride a bike. Introducing the Lead From Here initiative, Ravenscroft has not only showed their devotion for the academics, but their dedication to character...a true partnership between parents, teachers and staff to raise children who learn to lead themselves, lead with others and who have skills to succeed in our complex world. Additionally, the parent community is very welcoming. Ravenscroft is an INCREDIBLE place academically and beyond.

For all the resources that Ravenscroft has, they fall very short on creating unique learning opportunities for their students. I have seen schools with far less resources do much more amazing things. Recently, the administration spent precious time and energy opening a discussion with parents over giving the teachers an hour break one day a week and gave the children one less hour a week of learning. My son missed several days of schools while he was out sick with the flu. I asked his teacher if she could help catch him up on the school work that he missed. She seemed offended that I ask her to spend any extra time to help catch him up. She wan't even willing to take 10 minutes after school to go over what he missed! Also be prepared to be solicited regularly on your personal cell phone for money, in the form of a donation. I have interupted many times during the day, while at work, with calls from the school soliciting! They put so much resources into asking for money, and we only wish they put as much energy into their students!

Former Student. I would be in junior class this year ( Graduating Class of 2016), wanted to leave as I was enrolled in Ravenscroft since Pre Kindergarten. Looking back at Ravenscroft, I have mixed feelings. I think that the teachers are incredibly trained and have a great background from teaching (excluding a few middle school teachers, ex: Carlos Alvelo). The teachers ( in high school) were always caring and would help you whenever you asked. The administrators however are not the best. . There needs to be a change in direction before more people switch schools. I am not sure if it is Doreen's fault, or the board's fault.... Either way, something has to change. The fine arts department is second to none, with great leaders such as Bill Pendergrass. The Band program is one of the best private independent programs in the state. Overall, Ravenscroft is a good school. But, there are better choices out there.. Not worth the tuition money

My sons' experiences at Ravenscroft have been great! The academics are second to none and the environment is small and nurturing. My boys made the transition from a much larger public school environment that was overwhelming for them. I am thankful for the small class sizes and the individual attention my children receive. The school's leadership program is amazing and has done wonders for my children and the way they handle adversity, change and the well being of others! I wouldn't send my children anywhere else!

While no school is perfect, we have found that Ravenscroft is a great fit for all three of our children. We moved from a strong public school system in New England to Raleigh two years ago. The Wake County School system was overwhelming to navigate with children entering grades 9, 7 and 4. Charter schools are a wonderful option if you are lucky enough to "win" the lottery. Ravenscroft is expensive and there is certainly an element of privilege that runs through the grades. We receive financial aid and stretch/sacrifice to cover the rest. The "country club" feel that other reviewers have described has not dominated our experience. In fact, we have been pleasantly surprised by the diversity of the student body. Every teacher has gone above and beyond to support and encourage. Small class sizes, a challenging curriculum, a wide range of extra-curriculars (especially starting in middle school), and character development have all been a part of our experience. Any concerns have been handled in a timely, open manner. Our children's unique strengths are nurtured, their vulnerabilities are supported, and they are thriving. It's been the right choice for us.

My son is a kindergartener and this is our first experience with the school. We are halfway through the year and I am well pleased. Initially I had concerns with him being able to catch on because he didn't go to pre-school but, I was so impressed at his progression in only the first few weeks in school. Not only was he writing legibly but, was reading and sounding out words on his own and he enjoyed it! He loves school and looks forward to it daily. His math skills are steadily improving. He enjoys reading and, in his free time, creating stories and writing books. He has also discovered his creative side and now likes to make illustrations to go along with his stories. I have to give much credit to his teacher. I don't question that my son is getting a quality education. The staff and teachers I've encountered are friend and helpful. Communication is very open. I like being actively involved in my son's education experience and the community feel of the school. Diversity was somewhat of a concern at first but, this has not impacted my son's education experience at all and the school is growing in this area.

I made the decision to choose a private school in Raleigh due to the instability of Wake County's districting and narrowed it down to three. Ultimately the size of Ravenscroft (larger student body) along with the fact that it offered more athletic options swayed me. Also, I am not religious (that is not to say I am not respectful of religion). But did not feel comfortable with any sort of God curriculum. My big fear in sending my child to private school was that he would be surrounded people who were all alike because there would be a majority of kids from a certain socio-economic background. This was not the case for us. We have kids from different countries, different religions, same sex families, disabilities, ethnicities, etc. in his grade alone. That is not to say your traditional white prep school stereotypes (and their parents) are not present, because they are. But they are not dominating in my experience. For my son, Ravenscroft has been worth every cent. It has been a super nuturing community for him to develop academically and socially. After 8 years we have not had a bad teacher and every administrative issues was promptly dealt with. I've loved it, plain and simple.

It's unfortunate not to rate this school higher. The teachers can be excellent, they can also be the worst. Having said this, generally they do care and want your children to succeed. Here's the downside, the students are incorrigible brats- spoiled rotten- bordering on mean. If you are a church going family, very conservative and don't do anything out of the ordinary, perhaps this school is for you. If you have different views on the world, then don't put your kids through the torture. It's not worth it. Note: Many of the best middle school teacher have left for greener pastures and as I'm sure you know, the good ones leave first. (Grammar through Middle School, have since moved)

I have two children currently attending Ravenscroft High school. (We moved our children from public school when they started middle school.) Overall I am very pleased with the curriculum and feel like both of my children thrive in the more challenging environment since their enrollment. The majority of the teaching is caring and have done an excellent job in preparing children for higher level classes and college. They are always available if extra assistance is needed and have after school hours daily. I have one child heavily involved in HS sports who will also play in college, but I have never felt like it to precedence over her education. Regarding the "country club" mentality, sure there are people here that have money, BUT you would be surprised at the number of people struggling to keep their kids here as well. It was the right choice for my family and I've never looked back.

Three examples of a good school are its alumni achievement, its academic offering, and parents feedback. I must say RC with its type of school leaders, and parents comments in the community, is clearly a showoff and more of a country club setting than a school. If you compare by Wake County standards, RC falls to the lower category of area schools. The school may think being old is good, but it has lost teaching, education, and leadership direction clearly. This downfall transition has taken place in the last 15 years and more rapidly recently, since Triangle area schools have really shinned. Take a look at Raleigh Charter on the national ranking, and look at Cary Academy, or Durham Academy, or MC Math and Science. Maybe small town of Raleigh 100 years ago had a good school called RC, but this is not the case today, as Triangle has grown and has achieved significantly. More importantly, good schools are usually in the news with measureable achievements and not hype news. We have not seen academic achievements of RC in the news in recent times.

Ravenscroft has been an amazing experience for our family. We are THRILLED with not only the teaching and leadership (which brings to life a rigorous academic curriculum), but also the school's commitment to providing outstanding fine arts, technology, sports, and multi-cultural experiences for its students. Additionally, for an upper-tier private school, we have been extremely impressed by the ever-growing diversity we see across campus. We feel like Ravenscroft is striking an excellent balance between nurturing our boys and celebrating their gifts, while challenging and preparing them for the world into which they are headed. I

What a disapointment it was-truly grass is not greener on the other side.. glad we pulled our kid from the school. Lack of direction for school academics.. no challenge for kids- just average curiculum.. just wanted to say- glad we no longer there.. there are more greater schools then this and no need to pay all that money.. unless u are a mom who never held a job and just looking to show off between your friends- uhh my kid is at Ravenscroft whil i am at the spa or Crabtree mall.. please..no wonder this school still survives- these clueless moms..i got my education and the job i know what it takes to get ahead in life and this scholl .. -NOT IT.. only regret that i didnt lesson to reviews before we joined.. wow they were right..

We are a 3 generation Ravenscroft family and although we are very fond of the school and feel the teaching staff is far superior to public school, we have been very disappointed in the administration in recent years; its choices and apparent lack of ethics. We will likely be removing our middle school son before he reaches the upper school if things continue along this trajectory.

I was a transplant to Ravenscroft School at the beginning of my freshman year, having attended another private school in the area. I chose Ravenscroft because of its amazing academics and well rounded high school experience. And on that level, it has yet to disappoint. There are so many levels of classes that any student will feel challenged, and this academic environment is further heightened by all of the extracurriculars made available. However, the social side of this school has left a bad taste in my mouth. Obviously, with such a high tuition price, Ravenscroft attracts the richest families in the area. It is very much an old money school, and cliques are an ever present idea. As both a new student and a scholarship/financial aid student, I often feeel I am greeted with a cold shouler because of my family's tax bracket. Obviously, the numbers for this school don't lie, it is amazing in almost all of its pursuits, but if your child does not fit the Ravenscroft image of a future socialite, I would think about looking somewhere else.

My child attended this school and did well. We moved from the area and my kids now attend a decent public school. I have to say that althougt this was a nice school in many ways, looking back it was an expensive lesson learned about perceived quality of education. My son did well here, but he does equally as well in the public school even though there are some students who don't have the best moral and ethical of backgrounds. We thought we could socially isolate our kid from the "bad kids" in society if we put him in a private school. Honestly, because we give him a good ethical foundation at home, he avoids these kids anyway in the public school. This is a fine school, but not worth the extra $. If you are an active parent with a good grounded kid, you should save your money for college.
