When gauging a school's effectiveness, I ask the question, "Would I want my child in this school." I can honestly say, "Yes!" I am pleased with the quality of education that he is receiving there!

As a coach, I am always amazed at how dedicated our student athletes are. They excel in the classroom and on the field. Our student athletes are willing to help each other in order for everyone to succeed. This season, I have several athletes who have straight A's and who are also going to the state championship! Go Aces!

Holmes has a great program called ACE Time which provides a flexible time during the school day for students to get tutoring/extra help, attend clubs or participate in extracurricular activities, and for teachers to attend faculty/department meetings. Some great things occur during this time as special bonds between staff and students can be made during this time.

There are lots of opportunities for students considering we are a small rural high school. There are AP and community college options as well as 26 sports that students can participate in. All students have iPads and teachers are trained to use them in the classroom.

Many of the teachers working a John A. Holmes dedicate many hours to make sure that our students are successful. We sacrifice lunch, planning, and after school time to help students with school work and many other issues they may face. We are a hard working team of teachers, that truly care about our students.

This school has a great focus on use of technology. They have a 1:1 program where each student has access to an Ipad and they focus on using technology as a tool for learning. They also have a weekly broadcast filmed on Ipads and published through youtube. Check out "Aces Broadcast". Library has great resources including ebooks and makerspace tools.

I came to this school towards the end of the semester. Since I did not start with the rest of my colleagues in August, everyone has been so welcoming and helpful. I felt a part of the team from the moment I walked in the front doors my very first day. I absolutely LOVE my department members! I haven't felt so valuable as a teacher in a long time.

The English department is super strong and works very hard to ensure that students succeed, they are a wonderful addition to the school. Faculty and staff work extra hard to make the annual Edenton Peanut Festival a success.

We had exchange students from Denmark come visit our school and community for a few days in September. The interaction between our students and the Danes was a valuable experience that they will draw back on for a lifetime. Our group of students will be traveling to Denmark and Germany in the spring in a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Europe and Danish culture.

We have started some great programs for our students! Clubs during ACE time involve students in service learning projects and our exceptional children participate in community service to aid the elementary school students.

My son did so awesome on his physical science final exam. Ms. Ward prepared him so well for that test. She is a wonderful teacher and cares so much.

Our WorkKeys percentage for senior CTE Concentrators (2013-2014) exceeded the state average. - (JAHHS - 71.4% State - 67.6) - This includes senior concentrators who scored a silver Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) or higher.

There are many teachers and staff at this school who go above and beyond to provide for their students. We have a great technology department that provides useful educational tools to increase student learning. Our guidance department truly cares about our students and works hard to support them emotionally and academically. Our administrators work hard to support teachers and staff and also have great relationships with many of the students. We might be a small school, but we have big heart!

While John A Holmes has many great things going, the best and most important is our students. We have a student body that is, collectively, one of the most intelligent, collaborative and creative groups I have ever had the privilege to work with. The next best is the teachers and staff - a great educational family to work with.

I love the fact that we have small class sizes. The student-teacher ratio is good. ACE Time that is utilized by the students is wonderful! The staff works well with the administration.

At John A Holmes High School we have a great Administration and staff that will go the extra mile for each student. We offer many opportunities for students to receive extra support. We have ACE time which is a block of time that students have the opportunity to receive extra tutoring, make up tests, have club time and any other additional support they need. We also offer ACT prep classes for our 11th graders. We have some great students that are lead by some awesome teachers. John A Holmes High School believes every student can succeed.

The Occupational and Life Skills students actively help the Food Bank prepare food bags for the Book Bag Buddies program at D.F. Walker Elementary on a weekly basis. This is a great way for these students to participate in their community and help others!

Students are interested in doing projects that are meaningful to them and the community. A group of students during their free time have written grants to promote the information about invasive Hydrilla in the Chowan river. They are working to develop awareness, and prevent the spread of the weed at boat ramps. The group is one of only 13 in the country to receive a grant from What Kids Can Do foundation. These are the type of projects that can be offered in the rural small school setting.

The new principal is making lots of changes for the better, but she is doing it at the expense of some great teachers. I was shocked to see how many really good, caring teachers were pushed out at the end of the 2011-12 school year. Change is needed but she's changing so much that my daughterhas a schedule full of "TBA" teachers, and that makes me very worried!
