The short time my son attended this school he did a great job with his studies. The two teachers he experienced were wonderful. The problem I had which inspired an immediate transfer was the horrible names and cursing my son would endure by he other students. Mind you, he's in first grade which made it worse in my opinion. He was also involved in a couple of minor physical altercations which concerned me. He has yet to have a bad story about his classmates in his new school.

We moved our child from a charter school to this public school in our neighborhood because we felt she was way behind in core subjects and not doing well in the charter school. This small neighborhood school has been wonderful! Her 5th grade teacher here is a dedicated teacher, and in four months our child has become proficient in math due to the outstanding resources at this school. We are very happy with the Principal and the teachers we have met here. All the teachers we have met seem to be happy to work here and that is always a good sign!

Sombra del Monte is an average school with a handful of outstanding educators. Both of my children enjoyed attending the school and had good experiences with the teachers there. Overall the staff quality seems to be on the higher end, although some programs/procedures (such as the "rainbow" schedule and homogeneous leveled reading classes) seem to hinder the school's overall success. The special education department was highly responsive to my daughter's needs, and the staff shows genuine care for the students. Parental involvement is limited to a handful of dedicated parents, but this is partly due to weak organization and meetings held during regular working hours that exclude many parents. Overall, this is a solid school in a working-class neighborhood that adequately meets the needs of its population.
