Our experience with the New Mexico Academy for the Media Arts has been disheartening. The handling of serious incidents and safety concerns has been inadequate, with slow responses and opaque communication. Despite clear policies and procedures, their execution appears lacking when it comes to vital matters such as student safety, which negatively impacts the learning environment and our child's overall experience.
Furthermore, we've encountered a lack of responsiveness from the school's leadership, even after numerous attempts to engage in productive dialogues. While NMAMA may boast a commendable academic reputation, our personal experience has raised serious doubts about its administrative competence and commitment to student welfare. We urge prompt and urgent improvements for the sake of current and future students.

In order to support my son, who has several disabilities, they started the year enrolling him in study hall. Not only does study hall help him with homework, they have helped him organize and learn how to navigate all the classes and their homework requirements in such a wonderfully supportive way. He LOVES study hall. Because of study hall, homework isn't overly burdensome and is manageable.

Though we have only been here since start of year, I am thrilled at how engaged and communicative the teachers all. Powerschool is regularly updated for all classes, so you can see where you child is and where they are missing assignments or having a hard time. Teacher will email you if they have concerns, this is not your regular middle/highschool. Because of these wonderful, insightful teachers, my sons anxiety level is shockingly low, he is succeeding in all areas, social, emotional and academic.

The school works hard on developing and maintaining it's character, through its teachers, counselors and parent/family engagement through multiple social events (ie ice cream social, pizza dinner, etc). My son experienced horrible bullying at a different school, we have seen none of that at all! He talks about how his classmates are very open, sharing details from their childhood that are difficult/sad and are still processing. I've been surprised how open his classmates have been, obviously they feel safe in this school to do so, as they work through it.

Not only did the principal meet with every new, incoming family personally before school started, then all the teachers met with us (upon our request due to our sons disabilities) before school started!! The principal is very accessible, comes to every PTA (not called that here) meeting and responds to every email (within 24hrs!). Teachers appear very happy and supported.

YES! Enthusiastically YES! We chose this school after seeing their AMAZING scores on the NM PED website, demonstrating that they not only have more that the average of students with disabilities but their scores for academic performance are significantly higher compared with the state and district. We, personally, have experienced nothing but positive support. I've been very impressed.

All of our teachers work with special needs students in a way that works for them so nothing is lost. And Everyone's taught. Even our special needs daughter that other schools had given up on.

The principal is very supportive. Calm and careing. He is willing and does work with every single student and family to ensure everyone is where they need to be on the path of learning and growing.

Bullying is NOT tolerated at all. We've had major issues with this at every other school our daughter has attended. Even switched elementary schools 3 times! All bullying is addressed instantly! And will not reoccur if said bully wishes to remain a student at this school!

My daughter only has homework if she isn't managing her class time. This teaches her time management. If she works to use her time wisley she won't have homework because ample classroom time is provided for her. And she is special needs, so this is effective for ALL.

My daughter is in her 2nd year here 7th grade and the school and teachers took all of our concerns and addressed them all. Our first year was a hard adjustment only because transitions are very hard on our daughter. The school was with us making adjustments to provide the best learning environment possible for her. Regular APS schools were HELL! And filled with daily phone calls regarding our daughter not being able to "fit in their box" our daughter is making friends for the first time, and being 100% supported by her teachers and principal. We really couldn't ask for a more welcoming and warm environment for her.

As a teacher, I have worked all over New Mexico and in APS. By far, MACCS is such a collaborative & supportive environment for educators. Everyone, from the administration to facilities, helps our students learn. They really care!

This school loves to protect the bullies and never side with the bullys victim. They say "talk it out" but that will never happen. Bullies should be punished!

Everyone bullies everyone. Their answer is to have kids talk it out, unless your kid has been singled out (often the victim) and will get blamed for everything.

Bullying is rampant at this school. Its small so everyone knows everyone else.

The principal is not good. He singles kids out for discipline and then does nothing with other troublesome kids. Hes very bossy, pushy, opinionated. Some of the office staff are ok. Special Education teacher does not follow through with what is promised and frequently drops the ball.

My son hadnt an IEP here and their answer for providing services was having him leave class to go to the counselors office. His teachers singled him and didnt let him finish assignments even though it wasnt in his IEP.

I hate this school, my son hates this school. I dont feel like he learned anything in middle school and hes crazy certainly not going to be prepared for the information and work load that hell get in high school with APS.

Jefferson is an excellent middle school with a very strong focus on parent evolvement. The standards are high and the teachers are excellent.

Pros: A wonderful school with a strong focus in the media arts. The feel is closer to extended family rather than just a school campus. The students are encouraged to self express and be individuals. There's an Honors program available. Cons: There are a few issues that drive me batty, starting with teachers not getting grades turned in at all during the term, usually a week later after the tem ends. There seems to be a very relaxed feel at the school, which can be both good and bad. Honors courses are not taken seriously by majority of students in the classes, not testing to prove students are Honor Class ready/able. Small campus, no lockers and no lunch room.

The only reason I can't give MACCS a 5 star rating is their lack of space. My son has excelled beyond his dreams. They have an amazing staff and a principal who is a true pioneer and a force to be reckoned with. The curriculum is outstanding making it a great college prep school. I just wish they had more space to expand upon their vision. I highly recommend this school
