absolutely do not recommend this school. The teachers consistently treat students with no respect whatsoever, and it feels like they will hire just about anyone. Many of the teachers they bring in can barely communicate properly in English, which makes learning even more difficult.

The food is unacceptable. The lunch staff seems to just throw things together with no care for quality, and the meals are often disgusting.

This year’s Fall Fest was a perfect example of how poorly everything is handled. We paid $15 to attend, only to be served cold pizza and Capri Suns. We weren’t even allowed to sit down—the tables and chairs were taken away. The entire event was poorly planned, disappointing, and honestly felt like a waste of money.

On top of all that, the school is not safe. We’ve had to deal with fires, shootings, and other incidents that make students feel constantly on edge.

I was a substitute teacher for this school. I will give grace, because there were a handful of teachers earnestly trying their hardest to make connections with their students, and there were many that I heavily respected by the end of my time here. The deans really do care about the students, and I heavily respected much of the middle school staff.

However, now that I have worked at other schools, I can say that the early education levels of this school (especially grades K-3) are very mismanaged . I was going classroom to classroom, and got to meet every teacher and student throughout the grades. The ways teachers punished students by humiliating them in front of their peers would get me heavily reprimanded if I did them in my current setting. Again, this is not all teachers, but the ones who went out of their way to humiliate a specific kid in their classroom, to the point that the students would encourage the humiliation and further isolate the child.

This school absolutely is not keeping standards of paraprofessionals, and that much is clear in the way I watched autistic students get treated. An autistic student was once so upset in the room I was in that I took time in my break to calm her down while several adults, including her paraprofessional, watched. Every childs meltdown in grades k-3 was exacerbated by teacher behavior. I've never seen anything like it before or since. Do not send your child here if they need a paraprofessional. To my knowledge, paras are hired through a private, non-DOE approved program.

The stem class is just teaching chess strategies twice a week, there is no stem curriculum.

If you are a substitute teacher reading this, I do not recommend taking assignments here. They WILL put more work on you than you are paid to do, including asking a coworker and myself to create an entire curriculum from scratch with very little help. It also had by far the most inaccessible and uncomfortable teachers lounge I have ever stepped foot in.

My son Elijah is attending 2nd grade in this school,I had to change schools due to moving. I can honestly say my son & I love this school I see a huge improvement in my son’s education his grades are going up & he enjoys going to school daily . Elijah feels comfortable with his teachers they are amazing,the staff & principal are amazing. I definitely recommend this school 10/10. Everyone feel like family

My daughter attends Brooklyn Scholars Charter School, she have been here from the inception. I love the school because of its excellent curriculum and it's dedicated teachers., it is the best in Kings County. The teachers are dedicated to the success of your child/children and are evaluated just like the students. My child have been here going on 7 years now and she is excelling. I would recommend this school to anyone who want to see their child succeed. I have also volunteer at the school for several years in nearly every capacity so I am aware of commitment to excellence. Like everything it has its flaws that have to be worked on but in regards of this I will still give the school an 'A' grade. I think the Principal and teachers are phenomenal, my daughter loves it here.

For children who they see are setting positive examples and are role model for other students the answer is yes. For students who may need a little more of a push the school puts labels on those kids in a negative way.

My son goes to Brooklyn Scholars Charter school from kindergarten and now to first grade. I must say the school's curriculum is one of the best. My son reading and math level is great and he loves reading. However, what brings down the school's rating for me is the school staff. Some of the teachers and office staff are unprofessional and they always seem to have an attitude. Quite a few parents I have spoken to have said this. They tend to treat children with emotional behaviors different and what was told to me from the principal is that my son's behavior will not be tolerated when he goes to first grade and this was said in front of office staff instead of her office as I was not only embarrassed, I was upset. In my opinion they put labels on children who has emotional disturbances and does not like to work with them. The curriculum is great however because of the lack of support for myself and my son. it's better I find a school that will fit our needs.

They never here you out if your child is not doing well they don't have a lot of support for children with reading problems they have a lot of attitude this school the staff always

The teaching staff really cares about the students. And they welcome parent involvement. They are constantly working to ensure that your child achieves.

My son is a first grader at Brooklyn Scholars. My husband and I love the quality of eduaction there. This year his teacher left and he was without a stable teacher for a few months. Initially we were uncomfortable with this instability. However, we appreciate the fact that the administration was not willing to just find any replacement. They wanted an exceptional replacement. My son is excited about his new teacher and is doing great.

My husband and I Love this school for our 8 year old daughter. Our daughter has been a student at Brooklyn Scholars Charter School Since Kindergarten and she excels every year. The teachers, the front desk staff and the principle are smart, talented, wonderful, friendly and they treat every student and parent with respect.

This school has a very difficult task ahead of them. I agree that there is a lack of disipline protocol at this school. The principal is very dedicated to making the school great but faces huge challenges, especially high teacher turnover. I have been lucky to get the best teacher in each grade.

This is a tough neighborhood and the challenges this school faces are huge. Discipline is a big problem. Physical violence is common. There aren't consequences and the students understand this. Also, teacher turnover is very high. If you're lucky and you happen to get your child in a classroom with a great teacher, great, but you just can't count on it. Several classes have gone through 3 teachers this year alone. The majority of hires are first year teachers, and the salary is lower than public schools. So the teachers who stick it out and do a great job are saints. The administration is positive and wants the school and students to succeed, but the school is definitely struggling, and things are not improving. Hopefully they will.

My daughter has been a student at this school for 2 years and I love it! While I agree that some of the teachers are not quite as experienced as I would like them to be, I think that the deans and the principal do their job in helping the teachers and correcting them when necessary. It is important that parents understand that YOU are your child's first teacher. If they have behavior issues or if they are not growing academically then you must ask yourself "What am I doing or not doing in this case?" I would recommend this school to EVERYONE! If you're a parent that is involved in your child's academic life, there's no reason your child would not succeed here. The support system at Brooklyn Scholars is great. I encourage parents to try it for themselves. Remember your children are only as great as YOU make them. Teachers are there to enforce the values and morals that YOU have already put into your child and hopefully they are all good things. If YOU don't put anything in, then you cannot expect to get anything out. Once good morals and values have been taught to any child, being academically successful is not a struggle. BSCS Rocks!

This school is ok but I would not recommend it. I went with this school for the mere fact that they endorse high quality education, leadership, discipline, and excellence. I have had nothing with problems with this school since my daughter started Kindergarten Fall 2012. They do not discipline well and do not have a real strategic analytical way of handling it. They suspend 5 yr old kindergardeners for not listening! If a 5 yr old had a tantrum, which most small children do, they consider that to do harm to themselves and others. Another means for suspension. It is ridiculous. They do not handle social behavioral skills at all. The education is ok. I think way too much HW for kindergarten and project assignments they are incapable of doing so parents are doing them, literally. eg. Take pictures of objects in your community that are shaped like letters. If you have a small child that has a hard time with self control, listening and just being a 5 yr old, don't enroll, they don't have the patience nor the expertise with very young teachers straight out of college, and deans that are the worse with very little guidance.

Although this school has been highly rated it is clear that there are some problems especially with leadership! The principal is new and does not have a clue as to what she is doing! Several new teachers left this year and the classes have been without a permanent teacher for a few months. The children and their needs are not being adequately met in this setting.
