The staff tries to instill these qualities in the students, but they can only do so much. Parents really need to step in more... though there is a strong PTA presence, there still needs to be more. The teachers do the best they can. But some of the students really struggle with respecting others.

Leadership is in transition right now... the acting principal just came in this year as the Assistant Principal then something happened with the previous principal (which no one has disclosed to the parents, she just left one day, and some of us were cool with her and are concerned with her well being)... the new Assistant Principal had to take over and I am sure it has been rather challenging for her but she's done a good job. But some things have fallen through the cracks this year.

I've been a parent with this school for 5 years and have two children here currently. It's a good school and the staff really gets to know the students and work to create a learning environment that is conducive to productivity. The over all score for this school is low, I think because it is school that welcomes many immigrant children from different countries a and not only are there cultural differences but language barriers that often affect test scores. They do REALLY well with children who do not speak English. My daughter is in her last year this year and she is a pistol and I feel the staff (in particular, the previous principal and the female black teachers) have REALLY been advocates for her success and have worked with me to ensure she gets the best education she can. That's not to say that the white teachers have not, they have as well, but I feel they often times have inadvertently tried to police her moreso.... but she's no walk in the park, so it has all been a balancing act. My son is currently a 2nd grader, and had been identified as gifted which I am grateful because he has the tendency to be a behavior problem. He can be very challenging for the teachers and they handle with firmness and high expectation. Which I love. Overall, this school needs improvement in certain areas, but it is by far (in my opinion) the best elementary school in DPS. It is not a true Montessori because it is a public school, so there is still a certain type of systematic structure that you see in the other schools here at this school. But it does stay true to a lot of Montessori ways and teaching. If you're thinking of DPS schools for your little one, this is a good one. There are different family activities that the parents association puts on throughout the year. Daddy/daughter dance and Mother/Son event. Educational fieldtrips and more!

They give homework at the start of the week for the week and it gives the student an opportunity to complete it in their own time.

Our son is learning so much, and he's actually enjoying it and excited about it. His behavior and ability to focus has also improved dramatically, and we really attribute that to his teachers at River's Edge. They're not just throwing information at the kids and seeing who absorbs it, they're working with the kids to meet them where they are.

Don't know if all the teachers do it this way, but our son gets a homework packet each Monday to complete and turn in on Friday. This has been a great way to teach him about time management, he can count up the pages and see how many he needs to do each night, or if we're busy one night he can skip it and do more the next night. It's a reasonable amount and the flexibility makes it better than the average homework system.

A free, public Montessori school is one of the best kept secrets in the Dayton school district, and it's our reason for staying here. We love this school, the teachers and staff care and work with the kids. They do a lot of hands on learning instead of just worksheets, so the kids enjoy and absorb it more. There are 3 grade levels in each classroom, and the older kids help the younger ones learn and model good behavior to them, which is a positive on all sides. Kids who are ahead or behind in a subject can more easily have their work adjusted to their skill level, and the teachers work with them instead of trying to make everyone fall in line and do the exact same thing. The support staff for kids with an IEP is amazing. The school also has a good ESL program, so they get a lot of recent immigrant kids from all over the world, and they have a very diverse student body that is very inclusive.

As a parent of 2 boys who both started at age 3 we have been very happy with the holistic educational experience and flexibility of the teachers and staff to customize the curriculum to individual needs and abilities. With the fantastic new location across from RiverScape metropark, a world-class building and amenities, and potential for community partnerships, this is a school with a great future ahead of it!
