Memorial High School

We moved from Los Angeles, California to Edmond, Oklahoma May of 2022. My son finished his Freshman year at his old high school with struggling grades. His teachers had more than 40 students per class and had a hard time focusing on the kids. Also, California allowed schools to make their own decisions to have online schooling whenever Covid was in the rise. Well, that really hurt my son and all the other kid’s performance because it was hard to keep up with the changes. Now, Edmond Memorial is a whole different story. Less kids in the class room, teachers have more time to work with kids and the students here are much more polite. Hands down, Memorial High is a great school. My son has a 3.4 GPA and has teachers and care about his education. This is a must go to school.

Normally, when I need to get something done, school leadership is responsive, but I questions what they are doing in regards to classroom observations, particularly in the AP program.

No, I have seen students stalking other students in the hallway and a fair amount of bullying when I am there.

Actually, the school is pretty poor in most respects. For Oklahoma, it is a good school. However, it is not academically challenging, and the teachers spend far too much time discussing their Prada shoe purchases along with how little they get paid. Sadly, I only know one graduate who actually passed college algebra the first time with a grade of 'B' or better. Many took multiple times to pass at all.

Some of the on level teachers are pretty good, but the AP teachers are horrible. They appear to be there to satisfy their egos. Classroom time is wasted, and disagreement is not tolerated. They don't teach children how to think.

This may have more to do with the parents of the students than the school itself, but there is far more drama here than other schools I have experienced.

The teachers are fabulous, the academics are strong. This school gets an F in bullying prevention. They get a D- in how they handle bullying situations and consequences. They get a D in providing a culture of integrity, compassion, and respect.

Children can be inappropriately touched, bullied, and harassed with a very light consequence at this school. When severe consequences are not used (as described in the handbook) it creates a culture in the school lacking in integrity, compassion, and respect. A parent with a child subjected to this can expect to jump through lots of hoops to try to get it stopped and consequences meted out to the bullies with the end result being that the badly behaving student will receive no more than a lecture and slap on the wrist.

Although the Edmond Public School District has a no tolerance policy in regards to bullying and harassment, Edmond Memorial High School allows it to go on. If a student is being bullied/harassed you can expect for the bullies to be talked to and likely their parents as well but that is as far as it goes. Bullies are allowed behave like hooligans and continuously get away with it. The "No Tolerance" policy is purely lip service. The bullies will get nothing more than a slap on the wrist. This is what you can expect to happen with your child if they are subjected to bullying at this school. Leadership will not enforce their own rules. For example, staring and glaring is a form of intimidation and impedes the learning process. The policy states that this is considered harassment and bullying, yet children are told to ignore it and there is nothing that administration can do about it. Absolutely unacceptable that administrators fail to enforce their own mandates and proper consequences in this day and age when children are committing suicide and bringing guns to school.

I recommend this school highly. We have lived in three other states, and the Edmond schools are wonderful, in particular Memorial High. Teachers are above average and the curriculum is sound! I have only one major complaint. The reception in the fron office is horrible! You walk in, no one speaks, student helpers are too busy on their smart phones to receive anyone and the ladies in the back are mean and actually chestize you as if you were 15 years old if you have questions about picking your child up. I have been there 3 times and had this happen to me each time. It is disrespectful to parents, especially those who work full-time, who have to pick up their children for any reason to be treated this foully. We are not all stay at home moms who have fairly open schedules. It is sad that I would have to write this note when at the same time I am a devoted Memorial Bulldog Fan!! I am only hoping that it will jolt administration to only place individuals in that front office who are cordial, helpful, happy and friendly. Please do away with the students who are having a love affair with their iPhones instead of working or greeting the public.

I have a problem that seems to be happening at almost every school I thought about sending my child. Schools are more and more starting to look like prison. Bars, cameras, cops with guns or sticks, dogs, tire blowout chains, and parking bars. My son would have went to Memorial but I honestly couldn't send him to jail. I see that nearby small school Jones has an on duty guard and swipe badges for students to be let in doors. I can't abide by that either. I looked for and found the most open, free thinking, progressive school i could find. Perhaps it's this way because it doesn't have the funding Edmond has. Perhaps I'm wishing for a 1950's school that doesn't exist anymore. My son made A's at Will Rogers & Central. I just don't care for this level of 'control'. Anyway, Will Rogers was fine, Central was as well but I just couldn't tolerate the control, drug testing, guilty until proven innocent. sigh............

I student taught here in Vocal Music and Memorial is known state-wide as being one of the best high schools in the state for their music programs, including band and orchestra. I can't speak for the classes, but I can speak about the students I came into contact with everyday. They came from all walks of life, behaved appropriately, had great attitudes and a sincere desire to succeed. Granted, that was in choir, a class that they chose to take, but I can imagine it would carry over to their core curriculum classes.
