We have had an incredible experience at Heathwood Hall. Our child in in the upper school and we feel like they have received a stellar education and will be more than ready to take on college. We cannot thank Heathwood's teachers enough for the care and attention they give their students. Honestly, these educators are the best in the business. As for the negative reviews on this page, they are FAR from our experience. I would encourage anyone considering Heathwood Hall to visit and talk to parents of current and recently graduated students. You will find this is a warm and welcoming community grounded in the values of the Episcopal church.

I'm glad I found this site. Many of the reviews here reflect the same concerns I initially felt but was hesitant to fully acknowledge. Its disheartening that racism and exclusionary practices may still exist, especially at a school with such a prestigious reputation.

We recently went through the admissions process and, without going into detail, were ultimately denied. Our child is highly accomplished, gifted, and more than qualified. However, the process itself was frustrating, with delayed responses and a lack of communication at times.

Based on our experienceand in comparison to other families who did not look like us and seemed to have a smoother processits hard not to question whether bias played a role.

We truly hope the school reflects, grows, and restores the reputation it strives to uphold. In the meantime, we will continue to share our experience openly with others.

Heathwood used to be a special place, but the "it" factor is gone. There's been a significant amount of teacher turnover at all levels. Staff also jumps around. One day they're a teacher and the next year they're workimg in the front office. We've seen a decent amount of midyear resignations. If your child isn't shooting for an Ivy League or a UVA/Duke, do not expect them to get a fair education. Average students are left in the dark, so beware. They do have onsite tutors, but expect to pay a premium. The teachers are rarely available and their handbook material makes sure to say to not expect a teacher to be your child's private tutor. Be prepared to shell out $5K on a Winterim they proudly tout to everyone. The campus is beautiful and students of all levels have the opportunity to be outside a lot during the day. They raised money for a new building that only added a weight room and some offices, while the lower school and upper school have classes in moldy portables or pods. We have had 3 kids there at all levels so we have seen a lot. Do not ever expect concerns to be addressed. You will only receive canned apologies that have no feeling. You must align with their political beliefs and so should your child.

Enrollment mill takes alot of scholarship kids but has to water down the product to do so. Only parent engagement is centered around attempt to solicit yet another donation. Thats the only church related aspect of the school the constant passing of the collection plate.

We unenrolled our student after 3 years due to the following: 1. While there are numerous extra curriculars and tangentially related activities, we found the academic component to be lacking. 2. The administrative leaders, and particularly the head of school was unkind, unprofessional, dismissive, confrontational, and defensive. 3. The community at large is heavily stratified, cliquey, and exclusionary. We found this behavior to be persistent across students, parents, and school employees.

Also, the school blocks negative reviews on google (I have not been able to ascertain how), but this is a much more accurate representation of actual family experiences.

Bad! Bad! Bad! Terrible at handling bullying and mental health. They pretend to understand it but they do not they pick the easiest path or the path that pays them more money. Dont waste your time here.

Racist- send your colored children elsewhere. Folks this school is for the whites my child was hit and bullied by others here, and teacher was dismissive.

This school appears to be welcoming, organized and student focused. However, there are racial undertones that the leadership ignores. Children are exposed to bullying and direct racism, while the teachers and administrators turn the other cheek. They will acknowledge your concerns, but theyd rather pretend as if racism doesnt exist.

Reading some of the other reviews on here and I don't know what these people are talking about. I can hands-down say that Heathwood is the ONLY school in Columbia I want my daughter to go to. They offer an academically challenging learning environment and demand parental involvement. If you're looking to skate by on your kid's education and personal development then go somewhere else, but if you want your child to be the best they can be as well as prepared for college and the real world then send your child to Heathwood. We have had a couple of issues with bullying that were immediately addressed. The Head of Lower School called me on a Sunday to ensure me that she was already handling the problem. And I have heard no more complaints from my child. As for the curriculum, the children are encouraged to learn in the ways they learn best and they do not teach a test. Which is incredibly refreshing. I HIGHLY recommend Heathwood Hall!

Put down a $200 deposit for using the school transportation program. Our exchange student used the bus for 1 month which we paid an additional $100 for. When weno longer needed the service I was told the $200 was non refundable. I placed numerous calls about this. It has been months and no refund. Not a very Christian way of doing business.

The school is riding on the coattails of its good reputation, but the current administration is a train wreck. They are not even sure who is running the lower school currently. They cannot manage employees effectively. They cannot manage to send school information without sending follow-up corrections.

This school is all Marketing and no substance. Things to note: 1- this school is downwind of the Sewage Treatment Plant. 2- the school is located a mile down the road from three truck stops. Not only is this a security concern, but traffic is horrendous. 3- security is a joke. When the Security Guard is on break, the grounds maintenance staff fills in.

They are not given the direction and tools they need to do their jobs well. I believe there are some great teachers, but they all seem so unhappy.

From the moment my husband and I stepped on campus to tour Heathwood we were greeted with a warmth and sense of community that blew us away. We had to relocate to Columbia from the northeast and finding the right school for our two children to be challenged academically and thrive as individuals was of utmost concern. A year later, we feel like Heathwood has been the greatest part of our relocation. From the teachers who are always accessible and provide the most detailed and personal assessments I have ever seen - to the administrators who have helped answer any question whether it is in their lane of responsibility or not. My children come home CURIOUS - they love learning at school. I know a huge reason is that Heathwood goes beyond the traditional classroom to using the world around as material to teach. From the Tinker lab that amplifies the cool factor of science to the outdoor habitats on campus that expose them to a myriad of wildlife and beauty. It is so gratifying to see not only their academic development but their genuine enjoyment in all that entails. Final point, my husband wanted to start a lacrosse clinic for young boys and the Heathwood athletic department and administration were more than willing to open their fields and facilities to accommodate a new offering - knowing the clinic was open to all youth in Columbia not just Heathwood students. It is that kind of hospitality and accommodation we have experienced in every facet of our year here and I feel extremely optimistic and excited about what the next 12 years will bring.

The school cares more about religion than it does the mental health of it's students, and is incredibly disrespectful to those who are not Christian. They overcharge for their schooling, and are far more expansive than they should be. The admission staff, especially Mason, are incredibly unfriendly and rude, and nothing is ever done about rude staff members. Religion is put over education at times, forcing you to take religion classes instead of ones that will apply to you in college, and wastes the time for those who are not religious with Chapel and other religious events. If you're looking for a friendly, accepting environment, Heathwood is not the place. If your child is in need of someone to talk to, the High School doesn't even have a counselor for such matters! It's a waste of money and time, the only upside can be the social interaction and a select few members of the staff.

The education wasn't worth the money. I really didn't care for my child's teacher or her second aide. The first aide was very helpful and kind. It was more of a burden than the blessing I hoped for. We are much happier now with homeschool. We don't have to worry about the "clicks" and favoritism.

We were not satisfied with the willingness of a teacher to help a student who needed extra help. The teacher never offered. The educators I know who work in public schools have always been available and offered additional help after school to students in need. Also, since changing schools, we have learned that the education offered is not competitive with the education offered at public schools in nearby areas. Unfortunately, we have had to hire a tutor to help our child catch up with the other students in her elementary class. The child will also receive intervention to increase math skills because they were not on grade level with the elementary students in the same grade. This new information has made me want to share, so other parents will consider other options. We feel like our hard-earned money was not well-spent for the education offered at HH. From information I've received from other parents, there are better choices for private school, such as Hammond or Timmerman.

Extremely unsatisfied with a few teachers (their attitude towards learning) and the lack of education at this school. My son (who went to a public school before) has already learned everything he's been "taught" at Heathwood Hall this year. Unbelievable. Save yourselves the time and do not make the same mistake, I am pulling my son out of Heathwood this year.

This school is a joke. The students who go there act friendly, but when you actually go there for a few days, they either ignore you or be fake to your face and talk about you behind your back. (I got a number of students' opinions on this). I came to Heathwood during Freshman year, and have regretted it ever since. The education is not outstanding at all. I "Expect(ed) more" (HHES's logo), but I did not "get more". Very disappointed. The teachers are the only good thing about this school. A total waste of 16k.

This is the best school in Columbia... PERIOD! My child is in 10th grade and has been here all along. Our children are diverse, inclusive, gifted, and achievers. I know many people in other private and public schools. There is no comparison. Heathwood is the best!
