They put a lot of effort into the kids that take IB/AP classes and not much effort into the other kids.

Wow. I’m only in my third year and have a lot to say regarding this school. While this school offers a great variety of different career path opportunities, classes, college credits, they don’t care much about their students. The school culture SUCKS and the pep rallies are BORING! The attendance policy is horrendous. The only notes they accept attendance wise is doctor/court notes to be fully excused and exempted but even then your teachers will still expect you to get all your work caught up. Next thing, the administration and guidance department wow! Please note if you attend this school that your counselor will try to act like they know things revolving mental health but they don’t! They lack degrees to interact with students as if they’re therapists. They don’t even give time to the students like they should to help them figure out college. Reporting crimes and caring about the safety of their students overall they don’t do to keep their reputation good. There’s still more to say.

I read some of the reviews below and they appear to be from a long time ago. Not sure why JICHS has not been reviewed in a while - but it is a fantastic school. Whatever problems they had 6+ years ago.... they do not have them now. The school administration is excellent, communicative, fair, transparent and inviting.

We have two children (twins / boy and girl) that are in 9th grade. They are in Pre-IB, AP and Honors classes, as well as, regular classes. All of the teachers are focused and dedicated. I know this b/c I review what my kids are learning, I speak to my children and also review materials.

We also have opportunities to meet with the teachers, guidance counselors and administration. Just recently we spent almost 2 hours with the guidance counselor who was focused on their college and how to ensure that the remaining HS career is focused, enjoyable but is appropriately scaled for college (or other visions for after HS graduation).

The school itself is extremely nice and maintained. I am not sure what it looked like 5 years ago, but it has been renovated and is a top-notch facility. I would suggest going to the school, take a tour, learn more about it. Don't just take my word or anyone else's word about it.

I am not at all satisfied with the fact that James Island Charter High School has chosen not to allow students to benefit from the South Carolina Virtual School Program.

This charter high school is an excellent school with excellent teachers put in place by former principal Robert Boehnstangel. The reason I rate this school so low is that the current school board that was installed in september 2013 has in only one month fired Dr. Boehnstangel over the hiring of a new football coach and other personal agendas of certain board members. The students, faculty and community are now divided over petty issues and I believe in only a few months the actions of a few have threatened the best interests of the entire school. What a shame. I had three children who graduated from JICS and they did extremely well in college. I would not enroll a child here until this current turmoil is over and current board members are voted out. Parents need to get involved and search out the truth. Don't believe the lawyers.

Both children attended and are now excelling in both college and community life. JICHS has enthusiastic teachers and excellent adult leadership. I was thrilled with the high level of academics and also with the many extracurricular activities that were made available to students from every background. I also appreciated that the principal made himself available whenever I had a question or a comment. There is truly something for every student at JICHS.

Both Children attended. Both are doing great at state universities. Nice neighborhood feel. Good community.
