I'm beyond grateful that my 1st grader is now attending Austin Discovery School (ADS). We started the school year at our neighborhood AISD elementary school. Within a month, my daughter was scared to go to school, was "having difficulty completing assignments in a timely manner," and cried a lot in class. While all of this was happening, my daughter was also diagnosed with dyslexia (independent of the school district). All this amounted to her being overwhelmed, not learning anything, and making school a negative experience. I attempted to address these issues with the staff; however, they appeared apathetic to my concerns. Given limited resources, the staff did their best; however, something had to give.
I immediately toured a couple of schools, including ADS. Although I loved the philosophy and the general vibe of ADS, I also had concerns regarding the quality of the academic curriculum. Despite these fears, my husband and I enrolled our daughter at ADS. This was a quick process: I called ADS on Monday to ask about the next step; on Tuesday, she was enrolled at ADS and unenrolled at the neighborhood school, and my daughter started at ADS on Wednesday.
It's been 6 weeks, and we've witnessed the power of transferring schools. Within days, my child went from dragging her feet to singing in the car about how great school is. She came home and talked about the strategies her teacher suggested to help express her ideas in writing. We now have a nightly dinner table ritual where we all go around and say what our favorite thing is that day, and that's because she wants to talk about her day! And to top it off, she's progressed in her academics, including reading. Although we're still settling in and need to set up IEPs and resources for addressing her dyslexia, she currently receives additional help from her teacher.
In summary, we are so happy and relieved that we found ADS. It's made a world of difference in our child in record time. It's also one of the only places where I've felt I belong and can join the community as a parent. I implore you to check out ADS if you are looking into education options for your child.

I've had kids ar ADS for 11 years. The community is like no other because we have tons of opportunities to engage with families, teachers, admin and build community. Our children get to be themselves and are supported in every way. Lots of time outdoors and engaging with the earth, animals and gardens- all children should have these opportunities! Even more important- they live being at school and eager to return each day.

We joined the ADS community last year and it was such a refreshing experience! The staff and teachers are kind and supportive. The school has a unique curriculum which incorporates ecowellness. I would recommend this school to any family seeking a supportive environment and a nature based learning experience!

My partner and I have a first-grader at ADS. From the moment we started Kindergarten there, we knew that ADS is a very special place. Our kiddo has blossomed there in terms of academics, physical education, the arts, love of the natural world, and more. The teachers and staff are compassionate and are truly dedicated to the students and to the school's mission, which includes academic rigor, inclusivity, community, and care for the earth through their eco-wellness program. ADS has a lovely garden where the kids harvest their own fruits and vegetables and campus ducks, chickens, and turkeys! ADS is a little-known gem. Come check it out!

Our family makes a 30 mile commute to Austin Discovery School because it is such a good fit. The transition from homeschool to ADS was amazing! ADS has a hands on approach to learning while emphasizing a connection to nature. And a beautiful social emotional learning program! My kiddo always looks forward to weekly hikes. Eco-wellness includes learning in the garden & caring for turkeys, chickens & ducks (affectionally referred to as our bird brains). The Essentials Teachers are so engaging & amazing and make it a treat to learn more about Art, P.E. and Eco-Wellness. And then theres the community spirit of the school that is hard to duplicate. Parent involvement is highly encouraged at ADS and it shows. And they have a great PTO that continues many wonderful fundraising & community building traditions through the year like Fall Fest, OneFest and a community Holiday Bazaar. We love the nature based learning at Austin Discovery School. Its hard to find a public school in Austin that encourages and allows for time in nature. We had our kids in the local public school and it was like a prison with only 20 minutes of outdoor time all day and endless worksheets to memorize. At ADS they are focused on project based learning and hands on learning, a lot of which happens outdoors. They have a huge garden, where they not only learn to grow, but learn to cook! Its amazing. They go in weekly hikes for every grade level. They prioritize social-emotional development and relationships over punishment and control. The 4 day school week is fantastic! The teachers are kind and compassionate. The class sizes are intentionally kept small for optimal learning. Its a safe, inclusive space for all and if you have a kid that is neurodivergent, youll feel right at home at ADS.

We love Austin Discovery School! Their Eco-Wellness class with its amazing garden, weekly hikes on trails, and emphasis on socio-emotional learning really set this school apart from others. There is a lot of parent involvement with a supportive and collaborative parent/teacher community. This is a special school that is a good alternative to traditional public school.

ADS has been a great place for our ADHD kiddo. He tells us all the time that he loves going there. We feel very lucky that he gets so much outside time and all of the support that he needs. The Restore room and staff are a great resource and I don't understand how other schools get along without them! The campus is fantastic and the parents and families who choose to go here really make it a great place to be. The environment is super inclusive and LGBTQ+ friendly!

This school has been a godsend for my daughter who had a lot of anxiety about starting school and a lot of social anxiety. She has been developing a very healthy sense of self and has stepped into an authentic expression that I feel will help her in the long term. As for academics, it's a little too early to tell since she is still very young, so far I do believe she has gained a lot of confidence that will help with her feeling open and ready to learn new things without feeling judged or confused.

The only reason I did take one star off was due to the communication issues, although this year it does seem to be getting a lot better and I'm hopeful for the upcoming school year.

I love that ADS actually implements true Social Emotional Learning. They offer a space for my child to be heard and grow in self awareness and confidence. My child has learned that they can set their own boundaries and how to listen to others about their boundaries.

I know academics have not always been rigorous here, however, since they started Amplify, Ive seen great growth in my childs ability to decipher and understand text. I believe next year they are going to be using a new math curriculum & I am excited to see my child grow in math skills.

They are moving to a 4 day school week which is innovative for the area. They have Friday programs as well, and I look forward to being able to help the community grow by volunteering.

The parent community is usually pretty tight knit coming together to put events together for the school. My child also gets to spend more time outside with weekly hikes & time in the gardens. They often are doing classes outdoors as well.

Ive seen so much growth in the last 5 years my child has been attending this school. Ive seen changes that have been difficult to get through, but they always put the students first.

My student developed a love for independent thinking, creativity, and a broadened admiration for the outdoors. His greatest asset was the utilization of the resources available to him in Restore, where they furthered his social and emotional skills fostered in the classroom. I have had kids here for about 8 years and they are continuing to get better and better. The campus is beautiful. Art and outdoor time is a big part of the school. We love the teachers and the front staff. They are definitely on par academically with public school and I think above average when is comes to appreciating the outdoors. The eco-wellness program is awesome!

My child has gone here from K-3. He often doesn't want to go home at the end of the day or on weekends because he says he loves his class and learning so much. Everyday he has a new highlight to share whether it's a hands-on experience in a science lesson, a new strategy to make his writing stronger, a theater activity he loved, or a challenge with a friend that was overcome. We live an hour away, but he does not want to go anywhere. He told me he's staying here until 8th grade.:)

We are only young once and I am so grateful for the experiences my kids have at Austin Discovery School. Along with the normal school curriculum, they get experiences with gardening, tending animals, art, theater, music, weekly hikes and so much more. Last year I got to experience my 4th grader make a working solar oven as a group project, compete with other groups and win! It's sometimes hard as a parent to provide these kind of experiences and learning opportunities, as well as give your children the confidence they need. This school helps me do that and I'm so grateful!

I love that homework is not introduced, on a regular basis, until later years. It makes home life much more enjoyable for everyone and we can spend more quality time together. My daughter is in 4th grade and has gone to ADS since Kinder and transitioned from little homework to daily homework with no problem. If there isn't homework but she would like some, she requests it and her teachers will come up with something she can work on.

The teachers are very passionate about their jobs and the kids. We have yet to have a teacher that we or the kids didn't like. My kids often don't want to leave school because they love their teachers and friends so much.

They have learning based projects where the whole class has to work together to accomplish their project. The kids at this school are taught how to productively solve issues with each other at each grade level. When necessary they discuss issues as a class so that everyone understands how words and behaviors can make others feel and what they can do to make it better. Seeing your direct impact on someone is a great way to change behaviors, if needed, and become a better friend.

The school is very inclusive of all learning differences or any other differences. I love that my children get to interact and make friends with kids of all types. They will always be around people who are different from them in many ways and this helps prepare them for that.

My son's favorite thing about ADS is the "Essential" classes. He loves his time in Music, Eco Wellness, Library, Art, and PE. I love that he is getting a well rounded education allowing him to explore all facets of education including WEEKLY HIKES where they focus on nature! Children thrive outdoors and this is a wonderful way to get exercise and educate outside of the classroom. My favorite part about the school, is their attention to the individual child and the strong focus on Social and Emotional learning skills. This, in my opinion, is the basis for which all education should evolve. These children are learning to embrace individuality while developing skills needed to collaborate in a group setting. I am extremely happy with our choice to return to this school for a second year and thankful for the care and effort those guiding him have invested in his education.

Studies show that homework is ineffective. ADS is very progressive in this regard. Homework does not start until later years. Children are encouraged to read and enjoy family time in the evenings.

Teachers are profoundly committed to the students. Social Emotional Learning is paramount and emphasized in Kinder and 1st grade (when students need it most). This approach sets students on a path to success as individuals and the natural byproduct is academic success. There is a spectrum of teaching approach. Our son needs boundaries and limits and the teachers were able to provide that within a positive and nurturing environment.

The social emotional learning program is one of the longest running in the city of Austin. It is non punitive. Children are taught to articulate their emotions, they take positive breaks and write reflection sheets as opposed to punitive measures and it shows!

Our son struggled academically in first grade. ADS provided a battery of tests and even has an outside psychologist who comes in to assess a child's learning and to conduct regular observations. ADS put in a great deal of time to evaluate our son and discovered his issue is reading fluency. I do not believe a mainstream school would have been able to evaluate our child accurately. Based on his social and emotional development he was advanced to the next grade and still has reading and math intervention (1:1 tutoring) to assist in his academic progress.

Please, do not send your child to this school, if you have a sweet, smart child, like I do. The mean bullies rule this school, and are never corrected in a way that actually causes them to change. This school teaches to the lowest leveled student in the class, without allowing the students who are further along to do any other lessons or enrichment. Then when those students get bored, they are punished or sent to Restore. Don't even get me started on Restore. That place is a joke. The kids who really need to be there (the ones who are hurting others) are never sent there. They send the kids who cry because they are bullied. This school advertises itself as a progressive school, and in some ways it is. It has a beautiful garden, but the children are rarely allowed to actually participate in actual gardening. This school was a huge disappointment to me and my family. I wanted my child to have a positive experience, and instead, it was a complete nightmare. My child was subjected to severe bullying on a daily basis. I had to nurse my child's bloody knees, bruises, scratches, etc. every day from being pushed, punched in the stomach, tripped, pinched, not to mention the emotional abuse of being told, "No one likes you. You're stupid, you're an idiot, etc." Absolutely NOTHING was done to the child(ren) responsible for injuring and insulting my child. MY CHILD was punished for crying too much when he was injured. Aside from the bullying, the teacher my child was bonded to for eight months, quit, and was replaced with an ultra-strict authoritarian with no flexibility, no compassion, no idea how to teach, and actually repremanded my child for bringing a STEM activity book from home to work on because he was SO BORED in her classroom. My child was already reading, and she was still doing whole-class instruction on "the A says aah." The head of school was so un-helpful, that even after emailing her with photographs of my child's injuries every day for a solid week, she NEVER responded to my concerns. Thankfully, she was forced to resign. I ended up withdrawing my child from this school because of how bad my son's experience was. He would cry every morning and say he was too scared to go to school. It's very sad, what my child was subjected to for several months. I wouldn't recommend this school to anyone. Stay far, far away from ADS.

Teachers at ADS tend to have more education and experience than other schools we've investigated. The school's charter allows for great creativity and they provide excellent continuing education for the teachers. With very few exceptions, all the teachers our kids have had have been wonderful.

I am impressed every day at the social/emotional learning experiences my kids are offered. Both of our children have received special attention and services that they wouldn't have received anywhere else. This is the biggest draw of the school in my opinion.

Our son has improved academically by leaps and bounds under the care of ADS' special education team. Within 18 months of his diagnosis of his learning differences, his writing had improved to grade level and his math skills grew to almost grade level. We've been very happy with the caliber of attention and understanding that he's received.

The restorative justice program teaches the kids conflict resolution techniques to deal with interpersonal conflicts. I've been present for a few of these and it feels more like group therapy than a punitive experience. I've seen our kids employ the conflict resolution skills they've learned at ADS amongst themselves and with their friends.

Our son is going into 3rd grade. He has been at Austin Discovery School since K and loves it. He spontaneously talks about things he's learned in school on a regular basis whether it's about how to care for chickens, rabbits, or Mr. Tim's pet snakes in eco-wellness or U.S. history in music class. We're looking forward to him being able to take Theater starting in 3rd grade, too! Before he came to ADS, we were concerned about his reading level. Now, he's above grade level!

We moved states, and now I'm teaching in the largest public school system in MD and the 2nd highest rated. It's a beast of a system - if ADS was here, I wouldn't think twice about leaving it for ADS - teacher freedom and creativity, kids who understand working together(at upper primary grades- I teach/taught 5th) because our fantastic community of educators at lower levels and parents. The parent culture at ADS is unique - made up of a lot of great people who care about their kids - and actively participate. ADS will always hold a special place in my heart.

Is any school perfect? No. After a year here we decided to try our local public school where we could bike instead of driving 30 minutes a day. And less than a year later we were back. It's worth the long drive to me to feel comfortable in a school instead of not welcome. I know here that my child will learn how to communicate and work through issues instead of being bullied with no intervention by staff except being told to just stay away from each other.

Sent my son here for less than 3 months. It was one of the worst experiences I have had with a school. Laid back is okay if you're maybe in high school; but elementary isn't somewhere that should be pushed. My issue is the lack of communication. I consistently begged for more info as things that happened with my son here, that honestly never happened at any other school, I need paper work! Incident reports, etc and I still have yet to receive them! I also feared that the curriculum was lack luster. I sat down with him and attempted to do basic subtraction and he seems confused and didn't understand it, he's in 2nd grade! I also had a parent/teach conference over the phone and got no complaints, but consistently had issues in after care, where the director of after care (which is ran by the school) seemed to be lacking in experience as she once mentioned she "never had to deal with this before" ?!... As a director, I'd expect a full range of experience, but I guess not... but yet his teachers said one thing. Last but not least! When further investigation needed to be done as my son detailed something disturbing, the head of the school laughed at me. No joke, she out right cackled at me, and through out our conversation she cut me off and would scoff, giggle, etc. It was insane and unprofessional!!! I in turn had to call the police to make a report because it was clear my son was not safe here anymore. I suggest steering clearing. I don't believe they will last much longer, either.

This school has been the best experience for our kid who has grown in self-confidence and self-esteem since beginning there 2 years ago. The reasons the standardized tests score may be lower than at other schools is because the school believes in learning beyond teaching kids how to be good standardized test takes and fit neatly into a square box. Emotional intelligence is also developed and fostered, a trait which is becoming increasing prized not only in entrepreneurial circles but society at large. A mind is a terrible thing to waste folks, and that's one thing that definitely is NOT wasted at ADS.

My two children attend Austin Discovery School, one started in Kindergarten. We love this school, which focuses on growing whole, happy & well-rounded children. The focus on social emotional learning, project based learning and creating goals for your child is fantastic. I love the Music, Ecowellness & Art programs. The teachers shine at ADS - they are allowed to teach and do this with smiling faces. Children are happy because they've been heard, cared for and taught in a manner that encompasses different learning styles & strategies. We love the emphasis on gardening, outdoors, hikes, traditions & the very involved community.

I was a student here from kinder to 3rd grade, when i withdrew and went to a different school. When I went there, the school was not academically focused. We had lots of time outside, but not a lot of time used to learn. I remember that we never had any homework at all. We were just given worksheet after worksheet that we did not know how to do. However, i do understand that the school has grown, and is doing really well. Overall, it was a great place for me to learn to like school.

When we started here, I had no idea what to expect, and we chose the school because of the small cohorts. My daughter has 12 kids in her class, and 31 in her group. They do specials as a group- and everything else is with her 12. So, even though the school has many students, the feeling is very familial.

My daughter has anxiety, and so looking for schools-we didnt want a place that had the pressure of say, St. Francis. But here is where I am really amazed. Our teachers are gentle, but firm, and they are getting an excellent education. Reading, Social Studies, Math, Art, Eco, PE, Science.
My daughter has been there 3 months, and she can read anything, explains rural and urban concepts, knows all about germination- has grown and harvested her own raddishes, and understands music has a language.

She feels happy and safe, she is learning, her anxiety isn't manifesting. What a cool place, and as hippie as it may seem- the academics are there too.

This school has been amazing for my son! He had picked up so many bad behaviors at his old school and since starting here I have seen most of them clear away. The teachers here work with the kids and coach them through social issues. My son is finally learning how to play with other kids instead of just bossing them around. Before he started school he loved reading. His old school took the joy out of it and he started to say he hated reading. Now he loves it again and loves telling me about what they're reading in class. I could give a million examples of the changes I've seen in my son since he started school here. It's really been an amazing place for him.

My son started kinder last year when the "new" principal was beginning his second year. Soon after the first day of school, he resigned and was replaced with the principal we have now. She is a founder of the school and very quickly got things back on the right track, and is 100% invested in the school's mission. The beginning of this year has been light years different from the turmoil created by the former principal. There is good energy and a productive positive feeling in the school. That said, I'd like to comment in general, that I think ADS is a very special and unique school. It is a charter and thus relies heavily on family support and volunteerism. I consider this a plus. I have been involved in public schools for thirteen years and have never felt such a strong and tight knit community. The emphasis on social emotional wellness, environmental awareness (including an eco wellness elective, gardening and hiking), and project based learning is unique to ADS. Perhaps it's not what we are all used to growing up, so at times, it seems a bit messy and unpredictable, but it is truly beautiful, outside of the box thinking and teaching, and the charter's mission surely is aiming at the right target in terms of human development. At times, I find myself needing to practice patience when things don't run like rigid clockwork, or at times communication to parents is inconsistent. But I remind myself that because I trust the intention and mission to be more aligned with my own hopes for my child's emotional and intellectual growth, I'm okay with some of the gaps I see. The teachers are committed and professional and creative and encouraged/expected to be self starters and are given the freedom to teach in a way that speaks to their own heart, all while adhering to TEKS (state standards). It may not serve every family's needs (as no one school can), but it is serving ours beautifully & I am consistently grateful for having found it.

My daughter just started Kindergarten at ADS this year. Although we are only a few weeks in, I will say that I am happy with our decision to send her here. To be completely honest there were a few things that made our decision a bit tough. Most of these things were superficial. Such as the older buildings and the lack landscaping (really does make a difference).I realized though, that what ADS offers in terms of learning experience was well above what our local elementary schools offer. My daughters class size is 17 kids. They hike, have eco-wellness and social and emotional programs incorporated into the curriculum. That's fantastic compared to our neighborhood elementary school. In just a few short weeks, her teachers (yes two) have sent (unprompted) email updates a couple times a week. The principal has sent several as well. We haven't experienced any issues with the "traffic". I'm not even sure what traffic people are referring to. Every school has issues with the car lines. We are really excited for what this school has to offer.

Major concerns about the new principal and 30% staff turnover after he completed his first year. He is trying to do too much too quickly and it is impossible to get a straight answer from him. At the rate he's running off the established teachers, the school will have all newbies within a couple of years which is a shame because one of the things that is unique about ADS is the teachers who are working hard to build a real community. Communication from the administration is non-existent and always last minute. Two examples of recent issues: 1. It's just a few days until school starts and they haven't released class lists yet (probably because they don't want to reveal how much they over-enrolled since one of the school's selling points is the low student:teacher ratio). 2. They have a new bus service and just let everyone know that it won't be running until 2-3 weeks into the school year. The new driver just got his CDL and has never driven children before and he will be driving 70 kids around in rush hour traffic on I35 - scary thought.

The new principal is going to turn ADS into a less than ordinary school. My kids will enter 1st and 4th grade next year and I have very mixed feeling right now. I m extremely worried about ADS's future. I love the community and I LOVE the teachers! However, the new principal is pretty much on probation as far as I m concerned. While he appears to be an effective leader and a go getter , he is pushing through some extremely aggressive initiatives in a short period of time. In my opinion, these initiatives are being pushed out (at light speed) at the expense of other, very important issues that still need to be fixed within the current infrastructure. I feel overall like he s a numbers guy with not a lot of emotional equity in our school (kind of like a career politician). Get the test scores up, attract more families and students, bigger, more not seeing the forest for the trees. I am not a crunchy hipster and I don t care about the sugar rules. What I do care about is this great school, and our community (and our teachers!!) being bulldozed so this guy can say oh, hey, look at all the great stuff *I* did, without considering the collateral damage. Stay gold ADS!!

This school has been such a wonderful experience for my 2 children. No, it's not perfect (is anything?) but I'm left without words with regard to the learning experience my kids receive here. It truly makes learning so much fun for them, not a day goes by where they don't look forward to going to school. The staff is incredibly qualified and so creative working to meet the needs and learning styles of each child. Yes traffic is crazy, communication could be better, but I can look past that for my children. ADS is in our hearts, we all (parents included) love this place.

ADS is the right place for my children and many others. The kids are happy, confident individuals starting in Kindergarten. The learning that takes place happens all over campus rather than just in a classroom. The weekly hikes and Eco-Wellness classes are something that my kids would not be getting at any other school. The teachers are, for the most part, outstanding and committed to this style of education. The parents are extremely involved as they need to be at this type of school. (I wish I could do more for the school myself!) The leadership of the school has gone through some transitions over the past few years however overall the spirit of the school has stayed the same. It is not perfect so I can't give it a 5 but I'd give it a 4.5 if I could!

We have been at ADS for 5 years now and love it. The focus is on real education rather than passing state tests. There is a true outdoor learning component, and kids are truly nurtured in their emotional and social growth.

My daughter is a first grader at ADS and has attended since kindergarten. Even though it is a bit of a drive and much less convenient than our well rated neighborhood school, it is worth it to send her there. The curriculum is centered on project based learning with a constructivist approach, which means kids there are learning by doing, finding connections between subjects and putting what they learn into practice. Instead of daily worksheets drilling facts, she is writing stories, researching and doing poster presentations, and explaining her math thinking rather than just writing down the right answer. She is also happy and excited to go to school because her class is a tight knit and supportive community. The teachers really care about the kids and create an environment where the kids learn to appreciate and help each other. ADS fosters whole child development which is something I really like about it. They just got approval to amend their charter to add middle school and I plan to keep her there through 8th grade.

We joined ADS with a first and a third grader after moving to Austin from out of state. Both kids were welcomed into the community right away. We were impressed with energetic outgoing teachers who teach real life lessons. On the weekly Friday hikes, the children get sunshine, exercise and nature. Ecowellness is a unique part of the curriculum. There is good communication via Rallyhood and email. Our new principal has made excellent changes already and is visible and approachable at school. My oldest, now a fourth grader, is telling me to write "We love ADS!" right now.

Caring teachers, outdoor education, 1:16 ratios, gardens, creative and invigorated teachers, involved families. I appreciate the careful growing and nurturing if my children who attend this school. Positive discipline and loving staff. A very involved parent body. We spent 3 years at another school and are a new family who love the difference. My children have blossomed and are challenged. No grades doesn't mean too easy. I love the portfolio evaluations - they really help us understand what my children are learning.

We have 2 kids at ADS, and we're very happy there. The teachers are highly educated (moreso than our exceptionally-rated neighborhood school). There's no bullying, and the kids are generally sweet and kind. I love that my kids learn so much without realizing they're learning. They also get a lot more individual attention, and more challenge. The homework is less busywork and more thought-provoking. We also love the ecowellness program and Friday hikes. The kids don't feel like they've been cooped up all day, but they're not just "playing," either. They really do a lot of learning outside when weather permits. The teachers really care about the kids, which makes me feel like my children are safe. Most of all, my kids are happy and enjoy going to school.

Not a school. More like a group of buddies running a fundraising machine that feeds back into their close knit group. "Oh, you're a parent? wanna be an administrator? hired. Oh, I know you from somewhere, wanna teach?"...the ridiculous list goes on and on. Look at how often parents and staff bounce around from position to position, all of which they would be completely unqualified if vetted by any other charter, private, or public school. But hey, they can all hold hands and sing good intentions while the education and emotional health of young children are sacrificed. The complete disregard for very basic standards and regulations has harmed children at ADS. Don't be fooled. ADS carries some dark secrets. Investigate before you enroll your child.

My child attended ADS for one year. I found the parent/teacher communication to be unacceptable. As a parent, after basically demanding a parent teacher conference, I was told that my child was doing just great. My child was not doing great, not at all. As a parent you are often told what they think you want to hear. It almost seems like you have to be on the payroll to know what is going on at the school. The administration is no better. My child was in 3rd grade and had no idea who the principal was. Really? In a school with less than 400 students. Most of the faculty have children attending the school and it seems they move on when their child is done. The school has no diversity whatsoever. If you and your child can fit in with the clique, you will have a chance at succeeding in this school. The test results speak for themselves. It's hard to send your child to what you believe is a "better" school and watch him/her regress. I would not recommend this school for a normal well adjusted child.

Austin Discovery School is an incredibly different school compared to anything I have ever attended or any my daughters have attended. A school that places such emphasis on community, enrichment, and educating children on the environment is a school that would benefit any child. My daughter has blossomed as a student and as a person due to the quality of the education she is receiving from the wonderful teachers and staff at this school. The staff and parents here work so hard to beautify the campus and help make our school a great place to come and learn and play. Honestly, the only bad thing is I wish it went higher than 6th grade. We have one more year to go and we will miss this place so much.

My 2 kids have both gone here since Kindergarten. My daughter will be entering 4th grade this fall and has thrived here, even excelled. My son on the other hand is being held back in the 1st grade because "he doesn't retain math and reading skills." He has had the same teachers for two years and I was not made aware of his struggle until VERY late in the year, like only 2 months left. They stuck him in tutoring which 2 weeks before the end of school they told me didn't work and that he was going to have to repeat 1st grade and may need to be tested for dyslexia etc. WHY THE HECK DIDN'T YOU CATCH THIS EARLIER AND TEST HIM THEN SO HE DIDN'T SUFFER HAVING TO REPEAT THE 1ST GRADE!!! His scores showed that he was at grade level at the beginning of the year and that they dropped! He reads just fine to me at home and his math does need work but I am blown away that help didn't come until it was too late. The earlier reviews about it being a hipsters paradise are accurate. The over the top sugar control is accurate. I have such mixed feelings because we have had very different experiences with both our children. We are trying them for one more year. we shall see how it goes.

I have two children, and both have attended or are attending ADS. My daughter graduated 6th grade from ADS and has just completed her first year at Kealing - a very challenging, competitive middle-school - where she earned straight A's every report card. My son is still at ADS where he is excelling at math and reading. ADS is based on solid principals of how children learn best. They work hard to nurture inquisitive, thoughtful children. They understand that outdoor time is imperative for cognitive development. Sweet snacks are prohibited because sugar spikes cause so many negative issues. The teachers here are teaching because they love it, and it shows. But ADS is not for everybody. The school doesn't always do a great job educating the parents about the benefits of these ways, so if you don't come in knowing, it will just seem oddly loose and restrictive at the same time. It's not a great school for rote learners, or kids whose learning style requires rigorous structure. It is a wonderful school for people who want enthusiastic, life-long learners with a genuine appreciation for the world we live in.

Our child is not coming back next year. I absolutely love the idea of ADS and loved everything I was told on the school tour. But I barely saw any of it during the school year. Academics were less than. Yes, she learned about rainforest and how it needs to be protected. But nothing else! The parent community is weak, there is no diversity. Mold is in the building. Filthy dusty classrooms. Constant water puddles in the hallways from the water fountains. It's like noone cares and noone takes pride. And the food police! Man. I am all for healthy eating. I couldn't send her anything in her lunchbox that had added sugar. When she brought a bottle of hibiscus tea with a little bit of honey, the teacher ripped it out of her hands and dumped it in the sink. If you are looking for a school where parents compete who is more crunchy, whose kids completely lack any kind of personal hygiene, who have no social skills, but sure know A LOT about rainforest -- then this is the school for you. Otherwise, don't bother.

It pains me to rate ADS as below average, but in spite of effort on all fronts, the school did more harm than good for my child. We did not realize the full extent of the negative effect of his years at ADS until he began attending another school. It is my hope that things improve at ADS, but I would advise any parent considering ADS to seek feedback from families who have left the school to formulate a balanced view of its strengths and weaknesses.

All that on the wab page about teachers working together with parents to benefit the children is a complete farce. ADS is working for ADS to generate funding just like any other public school. As long as you don't have some idealized notion that this school is any different than any other public school, you should be fine. It probably is just as good as some public schools in Austin, but it is currently listed as academically unacceptable, so... This year they have over promised and under delivered.

I gree with some of the most recent postings. My son attended ADS for just one year and we've moved on, neither he nor I felt it was a good fit. Some things were minor, others not so. The lack ofcultural and racial diversity was an issue, the noise level of the classrooms affected my son's concentration, and the teachers by and large appeared unable to figure out how to positively deal with a regular boy who happens to like sports. At times it seemed like a place where the kiddos had to be overly mature for their age if they were to be happy. I felt like high achieving girls fared etter than boys. On the positive side, the aftercare program is awesome and most of the teachers are wonderful.

I am a native ADS parent, having been with the school since its first year. I have seen this school evolve, watched teachers and families come and go, felt joy and sorrow over various school decisions, questioned my sanity after realizing how much money I spend on gas to manage the commute to BFE. It isn't perfect--no school is. But at the end of the day, it is still the best public school option for young children in the city of Austin. Forget the Great Schools rating, which is based on test scores. Forget your own anxiety about your kids "keeping up" academically--worry about that later when you have teenagers. My kid who started in first grade at ADS is at the top of his class now in middle school. Don't underestimate your abilities as a PARENT to influence your child's learning. Meanwhile, let them be children while you go to work. Let them cultivate a reason to want to LIVE by playing and being out in nature on this beautiful campus. Encourage the school to give them MORE freedom, not less. These teachers and administrators feel enough pressure from the state regarding their academic programs without additional pressure from parents. Early childhood is sacred and fleeting.

I have mixed feelings about ADS and most people I know who have sent their child there have had mixed feelings, many of whom have withdrawn their child. The philosophy of the school is one that I embrace but seems challenging for the school to implement. Academically I do not feel that my child is prepared to compete within the public school setting. I do feel that my child is able to be more creative and have more unstructured time than if he attended a public school though at times the lack of structure and lack of high academic expectations seems to be a major drawback. It often feels like the children can put anything down on paper and a party will be thrown irregardless of its' quality or the effort the child put into the project. I think this school works best for children who are highly self motivated and come from family situations that are uncomplicated. The school is also lacking in cultural and racial diversity which I find discouraging.

I love this school and have always been very proud to be a part of it. The emphasis on "Discovering" through learning, instead of just passing the test, supports our child in ways that the public school system wagged the finger and discouraged our child. ADS is unique, alternative, diverse and multi-cultural to just name a few positives. The down side in this beautiful system of learning is clearly that the management/admin is often not eye-to-eye with the parents or teachers needs. There is a few instances where I've felt they are all bed fellows interested in backing each other rather than the good of the school. * Maybe hiring outside your click would do the school some good* The teachers however are ROCK STARS and amazing in their efforts and commitment.

I am in my 2nd year with ADS,and I find the staff to be exceptionally dedicated and invested in their work.I feel good knowing that my child doesn't have to pledge allegiance to the flag/Texas or walk the straight and narrow path to get her education.It's also a school that values respect for each other AND their differences.If a parent thinks they are somehow not "hip" enough.that may be their own personal issue.I've never seen anyone express anything but good will toward each other.ADS is a very positive learning environment,in my opinion.

I am sorry to say our experience with ADS was similar to some of the other reviewers here in that we felt very unwelcome. We are not a completely traditional family, but if you aren't all about organic food or alternative lifestyles or boycotting Cheerios because the palm oil used in their production is killing the rainforests (this is a real example) it can feel as if you are outcast. The academics are about what you would find at other public schools from what we experienced. This school seems to be a Mecca for hipsters and hippies. That is not a bad thing, but it is certainly NOT the definition of "diverse".

My grandson is not a "traditional" student and sitting in rows of desks listening to teachers who believe they and the sole possessors of knowledge would bore him. ADS allows him to explore his interests while giving him a great education. This school is very Rogerian - where the emphasis on the student not statistical outcomes. Love this school!!

this school is awesome! just the right amount of homework. the staff is very kind and helpful to every student, especially those in need. helps kids feel good about themselves with the no grade policy. just encouragement. keeps kids healthy with gardening and hikes. send your kid to this school!!!!!!!!
