East Central High School / East Central ISD needs to address the ongoing issue of student restrooms being locked during the school day.

It is extremely upsetting that on the very first day of school, my child called me to say that the restrooms were locked and students were being directed to use the nurse’s restroom. Unfortunately, this is not a new issue. This has been happening within East Central ISD since my children were in sixth grade, and they are now in high school. This concern has been brought up before, yet here we are years later dealing with the same problem.

I completely understand that schools are dealing with students vaping, skipping class, vandalizing bathrooms, and misusing restroom privileges. Those behaviors need to be addressed. However, restricting bathroom access for everyone is not an acceptable solution.

What about the student who is on their period and unexpectedly needs a restroom? What about the student who is sick? What about the student with a bladder, bowel, or other medical condition who cannot simply “hold it”? What about a child who is embarrassed to explain a private medical or menstrual issue just so they can meet a basic bodily need?

My own child has a medical condition that requires access to the restroom when needed. A student should not have to track down a nurse, explain themselves, wait for permission, or hold their bladder or bowels until they get home because restrooms are unavailable.

If misuse of the bathrooms is the concern, then there need to be better solutions. Assign restroom monitors. Implement a bathroom pass system. Keep track of which students are leaving class and for how long. Address the students who are actually breaking the rules rather than creating a situation that affects every student—including those who have done absolutely nothing wrong.

Bathroom access is a basic necessity, not a privilege that should be taken away from an entire student body because of the actions of some students.

Parents have raised this concern before. Years have passed, and it continues. At this point, I am asking East Central High School and East Central ISD to take this seriously and put an appropriate system in place that addresses misconduct without compromising the health, dignity, and basic needs of students.

Something needs to change. Our children deserve better than being afraid they won’t be able to use a restroom during their school day.

I had the pleasure of driving the lady hornets. And the coaches, and Director treated me with such respect and love! These girls are highly respectful, and great manners. This is a school that I would love to drive for again! Let's go East Central!

There’s a fight every day and some of the teacher shouldn’t be teaching ,there is a English 3 teacher teaching middle school English, probably because he doesn’t have the right qualifications to teach high schoolers. Also the admin don’t really do anything until it’s too late and there always locking the bathrooms causing long lines at the only bathrooms unlocked. Also I have only been absent three times and I already got a letter to come to court even though I haven’t been absent for a month. I’ve been told by a friend that the culinary class doesn’t even have enough money to do there labs. There’s also a real drug and vape problem.

I went here! The staff did a great job at helping the students think about their futures in a way that was realistic. I myself am going through medical school and am really grateful that I went here. I will be sending my children to ECISD.

From my experience the only classes that really gave homework were AP, college prep or college level courses.

This is by far one of the worst places to work and to send your students in order to be successful. Doing the homework on this school and district, we can determine that is is not up to par. In the standards of education, employee support, and student outcome. I would rate this school less than a one.

This school and district have nor effective strategies for homework, classwork, and test. Students are allowed to turn in work whenever they feel obligated to.

There is a "system" set in place, however this is not followed through from the big instances to the small ones. The leadership does not reinforce these concepts and therefore teachers have no effective ways of implementing.

One child entering 11th grade next year and one entering freshman, the school is what you make of it. The resources are there and readily available to students. Teachers are accessible and I find that they are for the most part ready to help students that want to be helped. My only complaint is that counselors are hard to get a hold of, I think this is because there are not enough of them for the volume of students. Overall, the school is good and heading in the right direction.

My child has dyslexia and he had 4 great years and his senior year is horrible. They had new staff come in and my child is struggling greatly without some of the help he received his 1st 3 years. He was in the top 25 percent of his class and now he may possibly not graduate next year because of one class. I have begged for help and they just keep moving him down to easier class. They should have never allowed him to take the difficult class knowing he struggles in math.

Overall I’m very disappointed with the direction this school is going. I had a student graduate from EC in 2013 and will have one graduate in 2019. Within this period, I have seen this district (both high school & middle school) decline tremendously. When I speak to others, I never recommend that they bring their children into this district. It’s sad to see a school that has such good facilities & community support to make a positive difference, fail so miserably in doing so.

Students never have homework. While this is convenient for some, it also does not teach students how to effectively study on their own which they will need in college.

There are some teachers who truly care but there are many more who are simply there for a paycheck. They make no effort to go the extra mile to support the kids. And the athletic dept and coaches are absolute jokes! There is no leadership, & as many parents have come to realize, it’s primarily about favoritism & not capabilities that gets your student playing time. All of this has become apparent as they lost every football game in 2017 and are significantly struggling in most other sports. In short, don’t bring your athletically inclined student to this school because he/she will be highly disappointed & go no where.

My daughter has had teachers that are inappropriate. Teachers that are teaching important classes such as math. And are only teaching so they can coach.

I attended and graduated from East Central High School 1998, I loved the school district and the teachers. I felt like they wanted to help you instead of bringing you down. They understood that we were kids and at times needed more support and not disregard kids who might have a hard time in the class. I wished my son would have gone to East Central.

At first, I did not like ECHS and was ready to take my daughter out her freshman year. She loved the school, but I clearly did not. I can say that the staff are very active and know the students & parents. She had no homework until the 2nd half of the year, and even then it was minimal. I quickly learned that this was because she was enrolled in regular classes. We were new to the district and were unaware of the difference in Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit. It was during her sophomore year (after a visit with the assistant principal) that we were made aware of the more challenging (college prep) courses. My daughter is now a junior, and we all appreciate ECHS. Her homework load is preparing her for college. I have noticed that her motivation and confidence has also improved. I recommend this school, but would highly recommend the Pre-AP, AP, and Dual Credit classes.

I go to East Central. I am going to be a Sophomore this year.This school good my opinion POINT BLANK.My only complaint is the food.Don't get me wrong its good its just that I've been in this district since first grade and don't want to go anywhere else.

East Central is a great school that is on the more. Your child can get an outstanding education here at ECHS if he or she is willing to do the things that it takes. Teacher quality is excellent, Principal leadership is outstanding, Parent involvement is on the rise. Every school in the city have problems but that is a very small part of all schools. Everyone need to focus on the great things that are happening at EC, a public high school, Every students at EC can take Pre AP and AP classes if they want too, there no barriers stopping students from taking advance courses. The leadership at EC is always looking for ways to make sure that students are college and workforce ready when they graduate. School can only do so much, parents are the real teachers, it all start at home. Yes, you focus on the negatives or you can get on board with the rest of us and continue to take ECHS to greater heights.. In closing checkout our agrculture program, JROTC, the mighty band , culinary arts, the art department just to name a few extra curriculum programs that your child could be involved with.

My children attend this school and I was a substitute teacher for two years. The administrative staff spends more time attending to the disobedient kids and therefore they don't have time to devote any attention to the good kids. Their funds also go to programs for the bad kids so gifted kids do not have programs to help challenge them. Also, if your child becomes a victum of one of the bad kids, don't expect any help from the staff. Even if its violence, they will not do anything about it except suggesting you should home school because they can't guarantee your childs safety. The breakfast and lunch menu is one of the worst in the nation. Again, I worked there for two years and in the mornings you can expect donuts, coco puffs, brused apples or packaged pastries. The lunch room always runs out of food before the second lunch so the kids are stuck eating pizza or watered down speghetti saunce with stale noodles everyday. And thats only if your kids are lucky enough to even get lunch. They lines are so long that by the time the kids sit down with their lunch, they only have about 2 minutes to eat. This school is huge but way over populated and not recommended.

I am currently a student at East Central and believe it is a great school. The deversity of students wonderful, for the most part the teachers are very easy to get along with and truely care about their students. As far as the GT program is concerned, it is true there is no GT in middle school, however the GT program offered in Elementry, Intermediate, and High School is wonderful. The Colloqlium classes for GT kids requires muc effort and teaches kids a great deal. I love my school and many of my teachers, the different groups of kids there is very benificial for me, I think, because in the real world, that's what is out there. Placing your child in a bubble with only similar kids may benefit them now, but later, perhaps not so much. As long as you teach your child values, goals, and how important grades are, they will do great and have amazing experiences.

If you have a gifted child, do not expect much from this district. There is not a GT Program in the middle schools. Even the small amount of time that is spent in "GT" during the Elementary years was just not enough to stimulate a gifted child. They refused to move my child ahead even though my child was ridiculously bored with the same repetitive curriculum. The chief complaint from the teachers was the budget. Many teachers claimed they simply did not have enough to work with. It's quite embarrassing walking into some of these classrooms and seeing outdated computers or worse no computers at all. As a parent and a former staff member, I can see this district taking a serious nose dive in the future as far as academics goes.
