This is our first year going to Candlewood elementary school and my son loves it! Ms. Hudson and the other teachers are amazing kind and very respectful. I have seen great academic growth in my son's learning. He's always excited to go to school and eager to learn.

My two daughters go there and the teachers, staff, and principal are amazing. They are very active on the app Class Dojo. The convenience of the school being so close is a plus. Well organized with events especially with the principal being very hands on and is at nearly every event.

If you have a special needs student Beware! These teachers cuss and have hit a student. I reported it and have followed through.

Our neices attended this school. Their academic performance improved significantly. This school has a new principal eho.always puts a positive outlook for the kids, and has really improved the overall campus. I am glad we enrolled out neices. They have learned alot, and their self esteem has improved significantly.

Absolutely horrible experience with this school and the way they handle discipline.

What homework? My son doesn't bring home any real homework. I give him homework myself to do instead.
Posted: February 1, 2018
My son's 2nd grade teacher was fantastic, but of course, she left Candlewood after one year. I don't blame her - her abilities as a teacher, I'm sure, were unappreciated or unnoticed.

Kids who have above average intellect who have strong character traits, a unique personality, or who are outspoken on any level are considered a problem... No resources to handle these kinds of students. No arts or music programs, no foreign language (other than ESL classes) offered at this school.
Posted: February 1, 2018
The only positive input I've been given was from my son's ALTERNATIVE school teacher, believe it or not.
Posted: February 1, 2018
My son is very bright, but the teachers have no resources to challenge smart kids. There are not enough "gifted and talented" students here to provide funds to low income school districts.

My son's teacher threatened him by saying something "accidental" might happen to him - a threat of bodily harm coming from a TEACHER constitutes bullying. And it hasn't been just one time either. Nothing has been done. My son was FALSELY accused of bullying - time isn't taken to investigate the situation before a decision is made, and the consequences, now defined by legal statutes, affect a kid's record and prevent admission to a better school - this is serious and the fact that bullying is now so loosely investigated, ANY report from someone claiming to have been "bullied", without proof , is taken as is and whoever they have accused is assumed guilty, again without proof.

My son is very intelligent, has a penchant for leadership, and is outspoken and witty - which equates to him being suspended, repeatedly, for issues that every kid who is 10 years old encounters and can usually resolve himself; i.e., disagreements with classmates on the playground, etc. This school seems to find it necessary to categorize every situation into who is the "bully" and who is being "bullied"...this sets up a scenario where any kid can claim he is being "bullied", and the consequences are dire. My son was FALSELY accused of "bullying", he moved another kid's backpack that was on top of his own, picked up his backpack and put the other kid's down where it was - and that kid told the teacher my son was taking or hiding the backpack, which was NOT THE CASE. This resulted in my son BEING SENT TO ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL!! Now he has a disciplinary record that prevents me from enrolling him in a better but more selective charter school. What the overall impression this gives is that kids had better watch out for each other, because if one of them wants to get another in trouble, all they have to do is accuse them of "bullying" !! This detracts from REAL bullying issues . Out of school suspensions is the constant go-to solution for every problem, whether warranted or not. Since when is keeping a kid out of school, taking away his education, a solution of ANY kind?? Especially when the issue at hand is minute and could be easily resolved if the teachers would take a moment to see what's really going on. My son has been here since kindergarten, and has been on the honor roll EVERY semester until this past one - regardless of numerous suspensions he has been given and alternative school placement for 3 weeks. He is in the 1% racial group at this school, and that seems to be playing a real part in why he is continually suspended. ALSO, one of his teachers has truly "bullied" my son in front of the class twice now, and NOTHING has been done - I am about to file a complaint with the school board. The academic level of this school is PATHETIC, I am my son's primary teacher at home because the curriculum is so substandard, they pretty much assure that the students, who are mostly considered to be disadvantaged kids, stay that way. Because this is a low income area, the kids pay the price and receive an inadequate education.

The worst school I have ever had the misfortune to send my child to. Most of the teachers and staff don't care about the kids and have to spend more time with the children who have disciplinary issues, which there are a lot. Bullying is a huge issue and the teachers can't do anything about it. The new principal seems to care and is trying to change things for the better. However, don't expect to get any time from him unless you're kid is in his office in trouble. My child makes great grades and her teacher is great but one good teacher does not out weigh the rest. I really hope those who have the chance enroll their kids down the street in Master elementary because I highly recommend to keep your child away from this school. Also on an important note they have terrible accountability of their kids. Three times I attempted to pick my child up and it took them 20 minutes to find her!

I would rate it 5 stars. I've sent 3 children through Candlewood and my 4th is starting 4th in the fall. I don't know what Zi would do if I didn't have the teacher and staff support to help with laying a amazing foundation for my children.

Each week they send out a paper letting parents know the words and what day a child is suppose to cover. And each individual teacher also compliments that with what that particular child may want to focus on more.
Posted: July 30, 2017
They care! The teachers want the children to receive and retain the information and make sure they do.
Posted: July 30, 2017
Candlewood prides itself on the image that they soar above. And each teachers expects their student to meet the goals and surpass them.
Posted: July 30, 2017
It seems a lot more focused and community based now. I really believe in the statement no child left behind. Not because they're pushing them through , but leading them in the right direction to success.
Posted: July 30, 2017
I believe they try to access any avenue they possibly can to help a child with special needs or disability.
Posted: July 30, 2017
This subject is a 0 tolerance and will not be a issue. They want Candlewood to be a family and a safe place for kids. Some of our kids come from hardship and struggle at home. Candlewood is set up for children to feel safe and open to be free of fear.

I have a big issue BULLYING. I dont know why kids think FIGHTING is the answer! This kids have their own games. They make up games involving fighting they just choose random kids to pick & fight with. My son was targeted just because he gets good grades. Its ridiculous! This kids will fight in restrooms, playgrounds, in cafeteria, etc. Dont get me wrong its a good school but something needs to be done with BULLYING.

My daughter attended pre k here in the 2014-2015 school year. I cannot believe how much she learned going for half a day every day. Not only did her speech get better, she knows the whole alphabet, upper and lower case, the sounds (to the point of being able to read a word here or there on her own sounding it out), can count 1 to 100, add and subtract minimally, can write her name as well as other words on her own, knows the days of the week, months of the year, seasons and so much more. While she knew some things to start, to see how far she could go is amazing and exciting and I'm so pleased. I was allowed to participate in many activities they had at the school as well as have my younger son get involved with his class for activities as well when I went up to the school so see my daughter. Participation was highly encouraged in all things. It's not a great area of town and maybe when she's older I will find another school just because of the area we live in is a little rough. But while she is younger and more focused on school than the kids around her, this is a great school. The teachers keep them active and going and were treated well from what I always saw and was told by my daughter. I have nothing bad to say about my experience with the school as far as pre k goes and the teachers we had.

My school is amazing, the best feeling was sending my som here for his very first year of school!! The only complaint I have is the lighting around the school and street for drop off in the morning, and wish they had a crossing card at the corner in front of the Pre-K rooms.
