We are the parents of an AOS Lower School student, who has attended for several years. Before matriculating, we were a new family to the school, so we only had friends' world of mouth to guide our school decision. The school has exceeded our already high expectations in every imaginable way. Our son loves schoolhe is thriving academically and socially.

AOS is a wonderful community that supports the whole child. There is a lot of family involvement and opportunities for parents to be on campus. Students graduate and go to top Houston high schools.

I have been attending AOS since 2nd grade. In my experience AOS has been one of the most welcoming and inclusive schools I have attended. AOS is not only a good place for your child to learn valuable life lessons, it can also be a space for parents to learn and grow their ways of encouraging their child or finding ways to help them grow. I just wanted everyone that reads this review to know that AOS would be a very good option for your child's school experience.

Notice how all of the high ratings are by parents, not current students/alumni? There are so many teachers that have obvious favoritism. I have met two that would go out of their way, just to get you in trouble if they dislike you. When you're in middle school, there are little to NO breaktimes, eight grade only has a ten minute break every WEEK. And the teachers still complain when you can't sit still in class? Some teachers even will get mad you if you ask to use the restroom/get water. People with disabilities only (sometimes) get extra times on tests. I've only met two teachers here EVER that I have actually felt comfortable talking too. This school states how they can't stop bullying from happening to LGBTQ people, just because they're a orthodox school, which doesn't even follow their school statement. They constantly remind us about our uniforms because it "shows integrity" to our school, but can't even handle bullying? The only reason I put two stars for learning is because the STUDENTS make it fun. Some teachers here are just lowkey disrespectful. Most students at this school are nice though. All in all, just save yourself the trouble and don't send your child here.

AOS is extremely nurturing and cares deeply about their students and families. The warm environment made me excited for every school year. I created lifelong relationships here. Although I graduated years ago, I still keep up with my friends and teachers that made the experience so wonderful. The diversity here is unmatched. All families will feel at home at AOS.

I loved AOS and plan to send my children here. AOS more than prepared me for my amazing high school and helped set me on the path that allowed me to obtain a JD from one of the top law schools in the country. Today, I am a practicing litigation attorney, and I still remember the amazing lessons and experiences that AOS provided to me. Sending me to AOS is one of the most amazing gifts that my Mom ever gave to me.

The teachers at this school are fantastic. They challenge students who are doing well and work with any student who is struggling to ensure the student succeeds. When I attended Middle School at AOS, Grammar went from my worst subject to one of my best due to the fabulous Grammar teacher who taught me how to diagram sentences. Over 20 years later, after obtaining a doctorate, I still remember the lessons I learned from this school.

AOS definitely teaches its students values, but also needs an implementation plan to ensure its students exercise those values by treating fellow students with kindness and respect. AOS was in the beginning stages of developing an anti-bullying protocol when I attended. Hopefully, this protocol has evolved into a more robust, ubiquitous policy.

AOS is an academically rigorous environment. While certain learning differences are accommodated, such as dyslexia, I do not recall seeing an array of learning difference amongst my fellow students. I am not sure AOS had the bandwidth to address a wide-variety of students with learning difference, but things may have changed since I attended.

When I attended school here in the 90s, AOS was just beginning to address bullying. At that time, very few schools addressed this issue at all, putting AOS as an innovator in many ways of the anti-bullying movement. For instance, the school brought in a child psychologist to help address certain bullying issues.

Parents often pick AOS because it makes it easy for them and they get a lot of recognition for it while the students get none. I am very unhappy at this school but sadly have to suffer through more time here. I have never felt challenged and also have never found a teaching style that works for me from any subject. I have felt brainwashed because a lot of information clearly has a lot of bias behind it. I have only ever found one teacher that I have connected with.

I have attended AOS for years and I personally have never found a class that truly made me enjoy learning. Teachers also always have different teaching styles and none seem to fit the learning styles of the students

In my experience, there are two kinds of teachers. The first type is the pushovers who have no control over their class which is why students love them because they never have to work or learn anything. The second type is the yelling control freaks who students hate because while students are trying to learn, if someone does anything other than sit completely still and straight in their chair and be completely silent, they are faced with a large amount of hostility. This type of teacher is very hard to learn with as well as the other type.

The rule enforcement at AOS is almost nonexistent and when it is students take it as a joke. I have personally been told many times that I have the worst-behaved class that they have ever seen. Maybe if you choose to enforce rules next time in non-hostile ways then students might listen. I will not name any names however the administration at this school needs to be fixed.

I personally do not have any learning disabilities however I have heard from my best friends that the support system is simply terrible. The only way I have ever seen students with learning disabilities supported is not getting timed for standardized testing. Students with learning disabilities often due much worse in classes.

The only bullying that is ever caught by the administration are very small things that don't require much punishment because these students are very smart and they know how to hide everything that they are doing.

My two children (boy and girl) go to AOS and have been there since pre-k. The school is a nurturing loving school. It has helped us develop our children into caring individuals. The academics are not set up to help students struggling with learning differences. However, as soon as a learning difference in my child was noticed, the teachers, counselor, and head of lower school set up a meeting with us to discuss the matter. This was a great help. And, got us on the road to dealing with the matter effectively early on. I am grateful to AOS and the AOS faculty, staff, and families for striving to make AOS the wonderful place it is today.

AOS is a wonderful school. My son is in Pre-K and he loves going to school every day. The school is a nurturing environment that also provides a diverse and challenging curriculum. In addition to academics, the school also focuses on developing the students moral character and sense of community. It is a school that places community service as one of its priorities. AOS is a great community with extensive parent involvement. The new addition to the building is beautiful. The space is open and full of light. You really see all the hard work and dedication that was put in not just by the school, but also by the parents in order to make it all possible. We have just started our AOS journey and we are looking forward to the many years ahead that we have to be a part of this community.

AOS is an amazing place! Warm teachers, administrators, and parent community. Challenging academics and faculty that are interested in capturing the hearts of young children to create a love of learning from early childhood. My young children (age 3.5 and 5) are exposed to a variety of Fine Arts, Athletics, Language, and other enrichment activities and we could not be more excited to see them grow into the mature, intelligent, and kind middle school children they have as role models at AOS!

Ten years ago, my husband and I began the search for a top notch private school education in Houston for our twins. We were immediately drawn to AOS because of its mission and its reputation for being a fine school not only academically but also spiritually. Our twins are now juniors in high school and have been prepared in every way by AOS. Our children know how to work hard and have high goals but at the same time, because of the kindness and the love that is inherent at AOS, they are confident and resilient. Also, as a multicultural family, we appreciate that AOS embraces diversity and has created an environment where everyone feels included and cared about. Now, our third child is a student at AOS, and although there are exciting changes happening to keep the school prepared for the future of education, AOS still remains the same kind, loving, and academically strong school that it has always been.

All but one of our children have attended AOS and we love this school. While they have had challenges in recent years regarding leadership, the school is actively changing that! Our older children (college age and older) came out of AOS completely prepared for high school and fondly look back at AOS (Middle School in particular) as the best times of their lives and still keep in touch with the community, teachers and students from that time. Our younger children still at the school look forward to class each day. NO SCHOOL is perfect in every way, but AOS has consistently helped all of our children become self sufficient, engaged, and prepared. The community at AOS for parents sets this school apart!

I graduated from AOS and went on to St. Agnes Academy. You always hear about how much AOS prepares you for highschool, but I never really realized it until my first couple of weeks at St. Agnes. Many of the students from the other schools were having a hard time managing the work load, while all of the AOS alumni were doing amazing. I would say at some points, freshman year was almost easier than 8th grade was at AOS. I can't thank the teachers enough at AOS for preparing me so well.

I would agree that AOS seems to have a hard time figuring out how to manage boys. We attended AOS for Pre-K and were concerned about the apparent lack of discipline. Our son constantly complained of being hit, shoved, etc., and therefore was always anxious about going to school. The academics are good, but there appear to be too many kids who are allowed to run wild in the pre-school classes. This may not be an issue in the older grades. Our son went on to West University Elementary for K and 1st and has not had the problem since.

Please note for lower school grades k-12 the class size is 20-22 students not 12 as noted on the overview. Kinder has an assistant. Higher grades have floating help with reading and math depending upon the grade. I do agree with another reviewer that AOS seems to have moved away from the mission statement of nuturing hearts and minds with more emphasis on academics. The school seems to be willing to work with kids with minor learning differences.

I use to wonder why this school has such a low Greek population until my son went to school there. Now, that he transferred to a school that has much better teacher support and leadership, I realize that the ones that can-- do go to better schools. This school lacks leadership but has a strong social network of parents that support each other and lean on each other as their children go through hard times with drugs and alcohol. Seems like a school for social networking, but not one for higher education. Horrible administration and bad leadership.

OS has some really wonderful qualities but the profound lack of leadership at the school has really begun to affect the quality of education. It is a good school for girls but there seem to be a lack of understanding of how to educate boys. AOS used to be a school that fostered and developed children's character but now that charming quality of the school seems to be missing. AOS's mission statement states that AOS "celebrates the diverse and individual qualities of all children and their families." I have to say that after spending 25 student years at AOS with my children I do not believe that to be true anymore.
