My current experience has been one of teachers with attitudes with the parents. Also, they discourage siblings hugging at lunchtime for their “safety.” My youngest child reported to me that a substitute teacher yelled at them and told me, “she was scary.” My oldest daughter told me the librarian wouldn’t let the kids go to the bathroom. All of the children were frustrated with one in particular going to the principals office to complain.

The attitude of one of the coaches and some of the staff is that off annoyance with both students and parents that question them.

It’s important to work closely with parents, to encourage normal psychosocial development. Instead, it’s more of a sterile setting with kids being given orders and expected to follow them without question. My daughter told me that part of her curriculum taught the kids that eating bugs was good. One of her questions said, “will you eat bugs?” To which she wrote, “no, I don’t want to eat 100 bugs!”

The upside is that my children’s main teachers are truly kind and caring people. The special education teachers enjoy their students.

Unfortunately, some teachers are catty and disrespectful to both students and their parents. Do not be surprised when they gossip about you in the lunchroom as they did me.

It’s unprofessional, not to mention unnecessary. When I brought my concerns to one of the from office personnel, I was met with the rebuttal of, “I’ve never heard anything,” (referring to my daughter who said her substitute teacher was scary) and, “we don’t know any the kids getting up and hugging siblings so they stay in their seats, it’s a safety issue,” referring to my children being told they can’t hug each other.

There’s a common statement I’ve heard from multiple teachers in this school and that’s, “it’s for their safety.” It’s truly not. Parents are capable of being involved in their children’s education and psychosocial development and should be a key part of their children’s education. My children are safe at home, I’m finding that they experience more hardship from some teachers and occasionally students at this school.
I want to transfer them out at this point.

I requested to transfer my child out of this school a couple of years ago due to poor handling of bullying and inappropriate behavior. These were separate occurrences on different days and they were not handled in a manner that I felt would discourage a child from doing the same thing again. I wouldn't even call it a slap on the wrist. I also did not feel that my child was learning or progressing as one would expect. Not sure if this was due to regular disruptions in the classroom or ineffective delivery from the teachers. I don't feel as if my child gained ANYTHING positive from this school. They have changed principals and things may have improved since our experience here.

My family has had a great experience at Lamar! The leadership as staff are among the best in the area! FYI the data on this website is outdated so I would encourage you to see the TEA website for more current information.

The teachers at Lamar are well trained in best teaching practices. They are committed to designing lessons that are engaging for students.

Both of my children have had wonderful experiences at this school. I’m very thankful they both had such great teachers who taught them and my soon to be high-school son has excelled. They have made some recent changes and I also think this is for the better as well. I have one more child here and he absolutely loves going to school everyday which speaks volumes to me.

We have changed schools a few times because of my husbands line of work. I have too say out of three schools Lamar Elementary is the best. The principle and assistant principle are great and very friendly. The teachers are very smart and know what they are doing. I am extremely pleased having my child at this school.

If you have a child who has a C average or below, they will get extra help. If your child has an A or B average, but needs help they will not get it. I am referring to Reading. Also, the top students are never challenged. As to supervision, the other mom is right on. They rush through lunch, including the line, in 20 minutes. The one person can not watch 6-8 classes by herself. Bullying is responded to only after you insist and then it is only talk. Check the state website. Eight other elementary schools in SAISD are doing better, including those with mostly poor students.
