Our overall experience has been amazing so far. My son has thrived at Tuckahoe due to a great extent to the excellent teachers, very engaged principal and a wonderful community. The PTA is very engaged but also laid back, and constantly making improvements - the brand new pond and bridge are the latest. Enrichment activities are very diverse and offered both spring and fall. My son learnt so much, and has developed a strong passion for reading which is one of the goals of Principal Pascal. Tuckahoe also has an excellent resource for gifted students and we hope her role increases overtime. We can't wait for my daughter to start next year!

I think that they do an okay job, but me as a student has had much bullying through my 5 years of going to this school

Kids shouldn’t have too much homework but they need to know to be responsible if they don’t finish.

Apparently lots of bullying goes unresolved but outwardly the school is trying to promote a "Kindness Campaign", which in my opinion is over the top. Kindness comes from howing people by actions how to behave, rather than preaching it.

Complete lack of vision and the desire to make it a strong educational institution. Lots of excuses for not doing things rather than a focus on key action points and goals for the school. The only reason I've given it 3 stars is because I know there are schools elsewhere that are worse than Tuckahoe.

This school is average at best. The only reason kids do well on tests is as a result of the upper-middle class, professional neighborhood this school is located in. Awesome parent community but that's where it stops. Teachers are hit and miss. Leadership is highly ineffective. As mentioned previously, asst. principal is incapable of making any decisions or resolving issues - not sure why he's even there. Principal is a nice guy but lacks vision. Yes - he started a kindness campaign and is totally focused on that and other pointless activities like the need to tweet every single thing he does in his private life. The school administration needs to refocus on academics and really looking at kids' educational needs rather than focusing overly on pointless activities. Not sure if this is going to change any time in the near future.

Overall my kids experience has been a great one for a public schools. The teachers are for the most part all very good and invested in the best outcome for the kids; they are caring and engaged. There have been issues re: bullying but I think the Administration is doing the best job that they can. They have a new Kindness campaign that is really innovative providing the students the ability to promote kindness among their peers. The community is a great and supportive overall.

Overall the school is probably above-average (we've had worse in other states), but as a parent we had so many issues with certain factors that we left with a bad impression. My kid doens't want to go back and visit his teachers, except for one. The assistant principal was completely ineffective at resolving issues--nice guy, but weak--and then when the (horrible, checked-out) principal retired, the AP became principal and nothing improved. They do a lot of lip service at tuckahoe to being a good citizen, etc, but there is a RAMPANT bullying and cliqueishness problem at this school that is supported by parents (queen bee moms lording it over others and telling their kids it's ok to exclude some kids from play because they're "not good at X" or whatever). The cafeteria is a disaster zone of incompetence, it's like lord of the flies in there during lunchtime, and the school as a whole is so overcrowded that all of 5th grade is spent in trailers (that leak fluids). There is also a glaring lack of diversity due to the boundaries of this upper middle class neighborhood. There was maybe one black kid in our fifth grade class.

Tuckahoe has a strong PTA but there are issues with the school leadership. The Assistant principal (AP) is incapable of resolving issues when concerns are raised. The AP has no professional manner to resolve differences in opinion with parents. If one of leaders for the school is lack in such skills, what can you expect from the rest of the school staff and teachers.

Great school my kids have thrived here, academically speaking, over the past three years. The only thing stopping me from giving this school five stars is the lack of diversity both in the student body and the staff. I realize that it is a function of the Socio economic demographic that the school finds itself in, but I feel it is a gap nonetheless. The attempts I have seen at diversity are more academic and less experiential. I'd like to see the school do more, perhaps with out-reach programs to neighboring schools.

Our daughter is learning a speak Spanish and has genuinely surprised us with her progress. Her home room kindergarten teacher couldn't be more lovely if she tried and is so sweet with every child in the class.

This is our first year at Tuckahoe and we couldn't be happier. My daughter loves her teacher, who is incredibly dedicated and approachable . There is a sense of strong leadership from the principle, and a wonderfully involved PTA. I was concerned after reading some of the negative reviews, but we have had an outstanding experience so far.

This has been a great place for my kids. I know the principal is retiring. Found the assistant principal to be down to earth and approachable. Hoping he'll stay on.

Tuckahoe is over-crowded and this is a serious issue. I have two children -- one of whom was just ahead of the worst of the demographic bulge and another who was in the middle of the bulge. For my older child, Tuckahoe has been a very positive experience. She had experienced teachers -- though it hasn't always been sufficiently challenging for her. For my younger child, it was terrible and he now attends private school. He consistently got new and not fully experienced teachers because they were expanding the number of classes in his grade; had inadequate play space at recess; was stressed by the short length of lunch (a side effect of crowding); etc. My daughter had a five-star experience at Tuckahoe; my son a one-star as the district's inability to plan for demographic shifts has ended up costing us his neighborhood friendships and private school tuition. I will say the positive change in my son after pulling him from Tuckahoe and placing him a less crowded school showed me that it was about the over-crowded environment; not my son. He has thrived academically and socially at his new school. Tuckahoe needs to be less crowded -- full stop!

Tuckahoe is not all sunshine and flowers. There is bullying going unresolved, minimal classroom management in some classes, and weak academics. I would not recommend this school. There is wide spread concern that overcrowding is the root cause of some of these issues, but really I think it is poor teacher selection and retention.

Parent involvement is strong. Many excellent teachers. Discovery Schoolyard, which used to be a proud centerpiece of the curriculum, is now sort of an afterthought -- maintained, parent and kid volunteers, but not what it used to be. Main problem with Tuckahoe right now is lack of decent leadership from the top. Think it's time for a new principal.

I am a proud Tuckahoe student from many decades ago (1955-1961). My best, most meaningful school years were spent here, and I've stopped by the school to look at it periodically when I visit the DC area from North Carolina. My 2nd grade with Miss Fish (1956) was spent at Stewart Elementary School up the street and is now a park. I'm happy they made that school's granite name over the door into a monument. Other teachers of my era included Miss Sherwood (Mrs Stay), Mrs Snell and Mrs. Bozzo. The elementary school years are a very formative period of time for a student, and I am happy to see that Tuckahoe does such a great job of paying so much attention to its students. I am very proud to have been a Tuckahoe student.

I love this school with all of my heart. We moved out here from Washington State. My middle son has Autism and I was REALLY worried about his transition to ANY school out there. I really wanted him to be at the same school with his brothers, which he has never been able to do before becasue he's always had to be in a self contained classroom. The staff, EVERYONE, from his Special Ed teachers to the Principal, the support staff and his regular ed teacher have bent over backwards to not only accomodate him, but make sure that he was happy and thriving. My other two boys (just a year older and two years younger) LOVE the school as well. The parents are very active in the school, the PTA is huge and there is a lot of support from the community. It seems like every week one of my kids is going on a field trip. Everything at this school seems to have been painstakingly thought out. From the drop off/pick up procedures, which, by the way, should be implemented across the country, from the technology they use in the classrooms, the parent/teacher nights etc. I cannot say enough great things about this fantastic school. I love it and EVERYONE I've met there with my entire heart.

Everything about this school is great! At first I thought it was because we came from an inferior school (Clearview in Herndon) but realize that it is so much more than just being better academically. My children could not be more different academically and socially. They have both (as well as my third at Williamsburg) been accommodated for and treated with caring and respect. What impresses me most is that it is out of pure professionalism and not based on how much I participate or am friendly with the schools staff or parent cliques. I'm talking about real professional adults! It makes me want to participate just to be around these intelligent people! I guess this is the secret in making good schools great!!

Tuckahoe has exceptional teachers and administrators as well as an award-winning 'Discovery Schoolyard' where math, science, and social studies comes to life. Tuckahoe kids also learn to care for the earth, respect one another, and keep active.

My three grandchildren go to Tuckahoe Elementary - they are happy, well adjusted children who love to go to school. All their teachers have been excellent and the school is well run by caring administrators and staff.

As an elementary teacher for over 30 years, I can recognize a good school, and Tuckahoe meets all the criteria. I am fortunate in knowing that my grandchildren are receiving an excellent education and encouragement in all the creative arts.

My children both went to this neighborhood school. It has always had good teachers, a caring staff who could call the kids by name and a great outdoor schoolyard program.
