I graduated earlier this year and honestly I loved this school. I graduated early which the school made it a very easy process for me. This school has a bad reputation but you will find it is because most people still hold prejudices. As long as you dont start problems with anyone, they will not start with you. Most of my teachers were amazing and extremely understanding of kids who struggle with mental health, there was only one teacher that I really didnt like. I took AP, honors, and core classes and I would say I learned a lot from every single class. The academics are actually good here, it doesn't really reflect though because many students are not motivated to do their work, which the school does try to improve. The counselors are amazing! They actually care about you and will take time out of their day to make sure you are okay. Especially Ms. Frye who literally saved me my last year just by listening to me. Many good resources for tutoring, college help, financial aid and scholarship help. As a student, going to school here was so fun because almost everyone gets along and bullying isnt really an issue at Bayside, although people could be more kind to students with disabilities from what I have noticed. The principal, Mr. Walton is very laid back and very respectful. Some staff members almost have control issues and do way too much. If your a parent worried about sending your kid here, dont even worry. In the years that I was there they did not tolerate fighting or violence at all. There is also an entire team of security as well as one or two police officers on campus at all time. Honestly, I miss this school it was hilarious and as a kid with a not so good home life, this school was my escape and I enjoyed coming everyday because of the people there.

I had 5 kids graduate from this school... One was a part of the Academy. I never had any issues with bullying or anything. I agree the principal has a laid back approach. Every school will have its issues, no one school is perfect. I believe this school gets a bad reputation based on past experiences. Teachers try the best they can with the resources given. This school is over 50 years old and needs to be badly remodeled and upgraded.

I am not sure why this school is getting a low score but my little brother went here. He did great in academics and extra curricular activities. I think it really depends on the kid on how he will excel in school.

Not safe. My child is in the Health Sciences Academy, but will return to his zoned school for his last two years of high school. This school is not safe, due primarily to the principal's laid back views on bullying and violence in his school. I have met with him twice, and he is very unconcerned about safety issues in his school. He has a "kids will be kids" attitude. He expects kids to act out, especially athletes and seems to want parents ro do the same. He needs to creat and consistently rnfors a zero tolerance for bullying and violent behavior in his school, but he will not. He expects other students and parents to just accept that these things will happen. This attitude, I believe, contributes to behavioral issues. It is not a safe school. Do not send your child to Bayside High School.

I was very apprehensive to send my daughter to this school due to public opinions and reviews some websites like this one. However, I have been so pleasantly surprised at how wonderful the school has been. My daughter absolutely loves attending the Academy and I am very impressed with the level of professional learning the students are receiving. I gladly give this school a 5 star rating!

My son is a Sophomore. While he has an easy to please demeanor, he is very unhappy at this school. I am disturbed to read the texts from his classmates or hear how they talk. In my experience the teachers have not kept the assignments updated on their website; it is not an accurate reflection of my son's grades. I frequently hear stories of one teacher repeateldy sreaming at the students, once even throwing her soda at a wall in anger (of course she had the students clean it up). I got a phone call from another teacher last week stating I needed to "make" my son "stop helping others" because she found it "distracting". I rated two stars because my son hasn't come home beaten up, so that's something.

My daughter is a sophomore at Bayside. I was a bit nervous when she began there since the school has a mediocre rating on sites like this. However, we've been pleasantly surprised at what a great experience it's been! Her classes are challenging, her teachers are excellent, the sports are inclusive and fun, and her friends are great. Any time I have a question for a teacher, coach, administrator, etc. they are responsive and supportive. They have an excellent selection of classes (Latin, advanced maths, AP, Health Sciences Academy). The only negative comments I can make are that the facility needs to be updated... the building needs a facelift. Other than that, Bayside has been a great experience for my daughter, and we're so glad we decided to send her there rather than paying thousands of dollars for private school.

I am a student at bayside high. and there is some bad reputation about the school. That is other stuck-up parents thinking they are better than us because they can afford a million dollar house. They also say that it is a black people school. yes, a lot of the students are African American but, I am a coccasion female. and I love bayside. I went to Bayside middle and Independence middle in my younger says and I hated independence. They all bullied me because I was from bayside. They said I was poor and ghetto. Also they was much more drug activity and bullying there than at Bayside! My first day there I saw a teacher smoking in the bathroom. All my friend at Bayside were always there for me. And omg! guess what I'm a blonde tiny white girl and I didn't get shot! There is a much deeper connection at Bayside high school then other schools. Also, they have a GREAT football team! and cheerleaders ( I am a cheerleader ;D) so don't believe people when they tell you it is a ghetto no good rundown school. they are just ignorant snobby people. I don't live in the best neighborhood but guess what I have no lesser of a chance at succeeding in life than any other student would.

Believe me when I tell you, but this school is by far a sad excuse for a school. Communication from teachers to home is terrible. Most teachers just don't seem to care. The education level is ridiculously low, but from my understanding that's everywhere in the South. I can't get over the lack of education here. I'm from the North, and what my child is learning in most of his 9th grade classes here, he already learned in 7th grade. He was even placed in some 10th and 11th grade courses to be comparative to what he was learning before the move here and they are still lacking. Unfortunately for where we live, this is the school he had to go to. Besides the lack of quality education, safety is an issue. Every single day there is atleast one fight that my son has seen. It's crazy! I can't wait to move and get him into a better school. They need a total educational revamp!!

My daughter is a Freshman at Bayside Health Science Academy and my husband and I are very impressed by the teachers and their enthusiasm in teaching our kids. The Advanced Studies Diploma curriculum is intense, but it is amazing to hear our daughter discuss her classroom topics. She has learned so much already in it only the first semester. We were also very impressed by their use of technology to teach with; smartboards, edmundo, etc.

My daughter attends Bayside High School and we can't say enough good things about it. Because of the low rating on GreatSchools we were hesitant to send her there, but after meeting with the administration and touring the school we felt great. The teachers are excellent, they have great course offerings, lots of sports and extra curriculars, etc. It's a very welcoming environment. The students are friendly and my daughter had no trouble making great friends right away. She's in her second year there, and we've been very pleased with the school overall.

In Virginia Beach, High Schools have Academies attached to their HS. The students zoned for a specific HS go to that HS or they can test or apply to go to a different HS and be in their Academy.

3) FIRST COLONIAL HS- Legal Studies Academy- students accepted by application
4) BAYSIDE HS- Health Science Academy- students accepted by application
5) SALEM HS- Performing Arts Academy- students accepted by application
6) TALLWOOD HS- Global Studies Academy- students accepted by application
7) LANDSTOWN HS- Technology Academy- students accepted by application
