St Bridget School

This school is excellent. Our 4 kids are or have attended St. Bridget School. Compared to private schools in the area, this parochial school is the bargain of the century. Students are held accountable, discipline is enforced appropriately, and morals and ethics that have been banned at public schools are still taught here. Our oldest child began high school last fall and is at the top of his class, thanks largely to his experience and the devoted staff at St. Bridget School.

Students are held accountable for their assignments unlike reports I hear from many parents in local public schools. Students are also effectively prepared by the teachers to complete assignments with minimal assistance from parents.

Some grades are more challenging than others when it comes to balancing the homework load but over they do a good job of preparing the kids for matriculation.

My children and there friends have really grown up at St Bridget. They are not just learning the typically educational values but also how to be great and decent human beings. I could not be more proud of how the school helps develop these characteristics in the children. They also have an amazing extracurricular program that ranges from athletics to drama to robotics, etc. the athletics program is 2nd to none in the RIchmond area. They are fully inclusive, have far more offereings in sports and teams than any other school in Richmond. Even with only ~450 students across 10 (JK-8) grades they offer programs like fully in house programs Youth Fall Soccer (Jk-4 over 70% participation), Youth Winter Basketball (K-4 80%+), Spring COED Flag Football), Middle School (5-8 grade) Soccer, Basketball, COED Flag Football, Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Track and Field, and COED Golf. They also participate with the St Gertrude and Benedictine Middies program for other sports like Football, Baseball, Girls and Boys Lacrosse, Wrestling, Filed Hockey, and Softball

Principal Sadler is an extremely honest, caring and loving man. He has a great mix on his support staff that can balance the different needs of the school and fits well with his strengths and weaknesses.

The school has in house reading and math specialists and works with the parents on a regular basis. There are even private tutors who work with the school and parents to pull kids during class times to work on reading and math that the school does not offer.

While there have been some situations of kids being challenging in class the school has gone out of its way to handle it where everyone wins. I know of one child, who’s parents were experiencing a difficult divorce, who was asked to leave another prominent private school in the area after Kindergarten and not admitted to several others and St Bridget believed that no kid should go punished and worked with him and his parents and that child has thrived at St Bridget. In one grade they had some issues with a few kids so they decided to move from about 50 kids in two classes (both with 2 full time teachers - every class from K-5 has a head teacher and an assistant teacher) to 3 classes of 16 or 17 the following year (again with 2 teachers in each class). Moving from that 12 to 1 or 13-1 teacher range to an 8-1 ratio had a huge impact in improving the situation and to improve the kids behavior.

Had three children go through the school until 2017. After graduated went to local independent private schools and gifted-talented public high school. All doing very well with strong prep. School expanded with new middle school facility in 2016-2017. Teacher ratios in middle school were great all three children. Last two principles have been great and bringing changes over last eight years or so — initially a bit painful for those who did not like but brought over all significant modernization of teaching pedigogy. Loved all teachers and found supportive with one noted exception being middle school math with later two children... felt that as only negative to children’s othetwisr great experience. Nurturing environment that fosters strong community and Christian values.

I am a student at Saint Bridget and I love it! I feel like I made an unbreakable bond with several of my classmates and learned several things through out the course of my eight going on nine years here. But while I love many of the teachers and students here, like all places there are always exceptions.

Pros: Teacher turnover is rare. Uniforms. There is high parental involvement. Opportunities to join a team sport start early.

Cons: Facilities are small. No diversity, cookie cutter families/children, very clicky.
Teachers do not listen to what parents have to say about concerns over accademics until students score poorly on standardized tests. Supposedly a parish school.

I'm starting to wonder if sending my kids to St. Bridget's was the right decision. In fact, I was told by one of the teachers I should consider other schooling options. If your child isn't perfect, it is suggested that they should be tested and medicated. The classes are huge and the teacher can't or won't give children they extra help they need.

To the poster dated May 21, 2012: in K-3, there is definitely one full-time aide per classroom. In 4th grade in 2011-2012, there was one aide between two classes of 25+. If, as you say, "boys are much more immature than the girls" then I think you're judging them by the "act like girls" standards. I have had both boys and girls at St Bridget. The teachers shout because the classes are too big and the boys tend to be "much more immature than the girls." Yes, they act out and display juvenile behavior (your words) which can be managed if a teacher is trained and interested in helping the boys.

My son graduated from St Bridget in 2005 and although we were satisfied with many parts of his education, the Catholic schools simply don't have the resources to teach to the very bright or the below average. In retrospect we may have put him in a public school to take advantage of the enriched courses offered there. There were definitely teachers who were on the weak side a academically, and as a parent I found that the administration didn't take kindly to any criticism of said teachers. On the plus side, our son received the religious education we wanted him to have and left school with a certain amount of discipline and respect for others that he probably wouldn't have gotten in a public school. He went on to a rigorous program at our local public school and is now excelling in college.

Excellent "National Blue Ribbon" School. Great parental involvement and caring involved teachers. Lots of activates for students, nice facilities and great educational outcomes.
