This is our third year as a part of Linton Hall school. This school has been wonderful for both of my kids. The teachers are wonderful and my children are comfortable asking them for help as needed. My daughter struggled with reading and with the extra support from the school, her teacher, and the resource teacher she loves reading again. Both my children have also had success with the speech therapist that works with them weekly. My children are thriving at LHS.

If your goal as a parent/guardian is to instill a love of learning, partner with a school to support your child's socio-emotional learning, build your child's self-esteem and/or instill Catholic values, look elsewhere. Under the guidance of the previous head of school, this was a nurturing community in which teachers and students felt supported in their learning journey and grew as well-rounded individuals. Under new leadership, a toxic and controlling work environment has driven out some of the best teachers and sapped the remaining ones of their joy, which translates into a deadened classroom experience. The top priority now is safety and control at the expense of true learning. Example: Instead of embracing the potential of teaching science and sparking wonder through the solar eclipse, the school kept the students inside the gym, citing "safety issues" (presumably because of the few minutes of darkness and/or the chance of students not looking through their special glasses). They could have organized a volunteer network of parents -- there are many within the community who are eager to volunteer -- to assist teachers in keeping students safe but instead these students sat out this historical event and watched it later on the news.

Additionally, the school has cut back on P.E. times and has one very short daily recess, which results in lots of wiggly students in the classroom and teachers taxed by that. Discipline is wildly inconsistent and decisions seem to be based on whether the child has been labeled a problem or not. The school's approach feels like a power-hungry cop catching kids in their mistakes, rather than a positive culture of "catching" students doing good. There are monthly awards that name a child in each grade for extraordinary kindness or living Benedictine values but when the daily approach is punishment and there's a fleeting monthly moment of positivity, how do you think that feels to students living that reality? Rather than supporting kids in growing socio-emotionally -- the school counselor is only present a few days a week -- the school has enacted a bribery system, shortcutting substantive growth opportunities in favor of handing out trinkets.

The exodus of great teachers has led the headmaster to make desperate hires or keep teachers who should not be there. The academics are on par with a mediocre public school (lots of worksheets). Instead, look for a school that nurtures students as people and engages them as learners.

The pluses: As a private school, LHS is able to expel the incorrigible problem students, so there's probably less bullying and disruption.
The minuses: Academics are not as good as public school; though there are a couple of good teachers at LHS many are not well qualified. Also the school grading and discipline is inconsistent; whether this is random or due to favoritism is an open question, but whatever the cause it's not good. The attrition rate is rather high. Although the campus is large it is neglected.
Overall not a good value for money.

Excellent academics, professional teachers and administration. We are blessed to have such an amazing school family. My child is in middle school and we are very pleased with her experience. All the families pay tuition and truly want their kids to be in a Christian environment.

We just ended our first year and are very impressed. The small class sizes were perfect for our kids and helped with their social anxiety tremendously. The teachers want students to succeed and challenge them to do so. The administration is incredibly loving and personable. Public schools around here cannot compare.

Great school for the right clientele. The classrooms are huge and spacious due to the lack of students, which says tons about this school. The teachers care a lot - about themselves, leaving a 'survival of the fittest' mentality between the students. So if you are a stay at home mom you can literally re-take school with your child every day, there is no one there who will stop you. There is a breathtaking campus, probably the best in N VA, what a shame that its not used to its fullest capacity.

My daughter just graduated from Linton Hall last night. She is sad to leave after 10 years of being part of the Linton Hall family. She was accepted to the high school of her choice and due to her high placement scores (top 1% in math, top 5% overall) she will be taking the most challenging classes the school offers. She has been well prepared by her teachers at Linton Hall and I could not be more grateful to all of them. There is no better place for your child!

Little Sprouts Preschool is a wonderful preschool that offers a very warm, nurturing environment for your child. My three children have gone here and I can't imagine them anywhere else. The school educates the whole child with basic fundamentals, play, music & movement, science, art, Spanish and more! The staff is more like our family and they really care about all of their children! This is an incredible program for preschool aged children (age 2 1/2 to Pre-K) in the Bristow, Gainesville, Haymarket and Manassas area and I highly recommend it!!!

I cannot say enough great things about Little Sprouts. The program at Little Sprouts allows for each child to develop the skills necessary to foster a love of learning. They do this through active exploration, small & whole group activities, independent discovery and imaginative play. The staff at Little Sprouts is so loving, caring and knowledgeable. They greet you every morning with a big smile and provide the children with love and security. This school is dear to my heart. While my daughter attended the school it was discovered that she was suffering from significant hearing loss. The teachers and director were instrumental in helping develop strategies and accommodations to help my daughter to be successful. Not only did they help my daughter but they helped me. They were always there to listen, give their expertise and went above and beyond what I feel most schools would have done

Amazing staff and amazing school! I felt guilty sending my youngest to a different preschool after my older children went somewhere else. But, Little Sprouts / Linton Hall has so far exceeded all expectations and hopes for his first year of preschool. It is such a kind and compassionate environment focused on growing these little hearts and minds while giving them opportunities to enhance their communities through community service opportunities and a focus on the virtues. My youngest has amazed me with what he's learned and he's so excited to share his experiences with me every day. If you are looking for a play-based program that intentionally focuses on growing their minds and hearts, look no further!

The teachers make this school! They have gone above and beyond for my son. The teaching plan extends far beyond what a typical school would teach. My child has advanced more than I would have ever thought possible in their care and we are so glad that we chose this school! They say it takes a village to raise a child... consider this your loving village and family!

Little Sprouts thrives! Kids are engaged at the lower school but unfortunately 3rd grade through 8th misses the mark. First, there are very few boys that attend LHS and there is only one male teacher which makes it hard for role models. My kids did well in the lower school for a short time but we moved on due to curriculum problems, not enough diversity and I just couldn't see my kids graduating from that school and doing well in the middle school. The teachers are not well versed in technology and cant manage the kids of todays generation. It seems they need some younger teachers, innovative. Big changes are needed.

Our family moved to the area from out of state and have found Linton Hall School to be an inclusive, welcoming environment. Our child has thrived socially and emotionally, and as an upper school student, is showing an unprecedented enthusiasm for learning. School has so much potential, but one cannot help but feel like the school is a sinking ship. Currently, the price tag doesn't quite meet the value, if you want a small catholic school, go to a diocese school. If you want academics, go to a school where there are qualified teachers. If you feel entitled to quality, proactive school administration/leadership, don't waste your money here. But if you want a very small class size and a great sports program, this is the place to be.

Private School can get away with hiring many unqualified & unlicensed teachers, which is easily seen in the low standardized test scores. Great school for stay at home moms, you can literally stay at the school all day with no questions asked. Grades are assigned not for merit, but to placate the parents. Standardized scores say all. My daughter went from 99th percentile and then to 50% in one year due to an unqualified teacher. My complaints were ignored, and worst of all, my daughter was discriminated against due to my actions.

I am an alumnus of Linton Hall and have so many great memories at this school. The education and values I recieved here have without a doubt made me who am I today. This school and community not only prepares you for high school, it also prepares you for college and beyond. The faculty and staff at Linton Hall truly care about each and every student. Linton Hall School was 'home' to our family for 14 wonderful years. During this time our children were nurtured academically, socially, and spiritually. The Benedictine traditions, which are the basis for the love and compassion shown to all who pass through Linton Hall's doors, are a wonderful foundation in which to teach academics and life skills. My children left Linton Hall well prepared to excel in high school, and attend academically challenging colleges. Linton Hall is not just a particular teacher, class or program - it is the combined experience of all of these, which develop our children to go out and become successful adults.

I attended Linton Hall School from K - 8 and can honestly say I was thoroughly prepared for high school. The academics at Linton Hall obviously surpass those of the local public schools, as I found the advanced freshman and sophomore classes to be easier than some classes I took at Linton Hall. I loved the personal attention afforded to the students due to the small class size, the sense of community, the involvement with the Sisters and their other ministries, and knowing that there was always someone there who i could turn to if I needed anything.

Linton Hall School has been a wonderful experience for our children. It provides a small family atmosphere where there is no question that the learning process will not be disrupted by bullying, unruly children, etc. They celebrate the children striving for excellence, so that the children want to succeed in the classroom and in their activities and are not made to feel embarrassed by doing well. Additionally, having the sisters involved is a unique element to the school. It provides the children with another perspective of service by seeing the sisters minister to the children and to others in the community who need their help.

I have four children who attended and graduated from Linton Hall School. They all have very different personalities, but each of them thrived academically and socially in the nurturing environment of Linton Hall. Two have already graduated from high school and college with honors and are now doing well in the work force. The younger two are still in high school where they are at the top of their respective classes. They all have very fond memories of their years at Linton Hall and all of their teachers, some of which are still their "favorite". We as parents, as well as the children, have continued to stay involved with the community we spent so many years a part of. It is like "home" for us.

Linton Hall is an excellent academic school for our kids - it is a place where the kids can learn without disruption. Many kids start high school a grade ahead in reading and math. The school is able to provide challenges to kids who need it in certain subjects while helping others who need support. There is a sense that learning and achievement is something to be celebrated. There are also plenty of options for extracurricular activities that take into account varied interests like athletics, art club, chess club, music, Fife and Drum, etc. Our child has really enjoyed the Fife and Drum corps. He has learned musical skills, performance skills, discipline, and patriotism. They perform at school functions, but they also perform at outside functions sometimes performing for our military veterans. I have been to many events for the Fife and Drum corps, and without fail, the kids are always complimented on their skill, their behavior and for their love of country. All of the students at Linton Hall are a wonderful reflection of the school.

My daughter attended Linton Hall School for 9 years starting in Kindergarten. It was the best investment I could have made in her education. She learned not only the "ABC's" but also a great foundation for her high school education. She learned alot about respect for others and how important it is to be a part of the community. My daughter is now 16 and credits alot of her successes with the foundation Linton Hall provided. She often says she wishes Linton Hall had a high school- she would be first to sign up. Linton Hall is more than a brick and mortar building that provides and education. Linton Hall is a special place where memories, friendships and values are developed and fostered. I made a great decision on my daughter's behalf by sending her to Linton Hall. We will both treasure every minute we walked through the arches.

Linton Hall School is a major treasure in the Northern Virginia area and our family encourages everyone to explore the school and to talk to parents of current students. Linton Hall is a school where everyone knows your child, and protects and guides them as though they were their own. They also strive to bring out the best in each child. We have been at LHS for 6 years and my children are thriving and love school. They are respected and loved by all of the teachers and staff. Linton Hall was the perfect school for my two kids. Both have now graduated and I am so pleased to see how incredibly well prepared they were for High School. Both have commented that they were easily ahead of their peers in virtually all subject areas and they had the background and skills to complete their classwork and projects. I credit the amazing faculty for pushing the kids, but at the same time, knowing each of them and truly caring about how they were doing both inside and outside the classroom. Linton Hall is an amazing school! Our children are embraced by the faculty, staff and other parents. They are provided with a traditional faith-based education - we celebrate HOLYDAYS - by teachers who truly care. Parents who've written negative reviews are well known and, in many cases left for reasons unrelated to the quality of the education (e.g., finances). When you invest in the school - being supportive and connected - you will reap the benefits. Have friends at other private schools in the area, we're Linton Hall all the way! Linton Hall School is centrally located and students come from many areas as well as different faiths. All are welcome. My kids have done extremely well academically at Linton Hall , making President's Honors and Honor Roll. They have had the opportunity to participate in many family night events within the school -it is a community. The grading system is higher than the public schools so your child has to adjust to the higher expectation and work. Linton Hall is an ideal place for your kids because they aren't packed into a classroom ; they have top notch technology for smart boards and chrome books ( new addition). I agree it takes a village and your students, just like mine are well cared for and fully challenged academically.

I am a graduate of LHS as well as a current parent and staff member. I think that pretty much says it all! I appreciate the love and support offered to both of my children on a daily basis. Linton Hall has surpassed my expectations for my two kids. The school community is warm and hosts a New Family Orientation and New Family Welcome by assigning a Host family for questions. I really appreciated someone reaching out to my family before we attended. My two kids are making friends and thriving academically. Spanish is introduced at a young age and my kids are playing a little catch up having come from Public School but the Spanish teacher and all teachers ,are helpful and accommodating. My kids are much happier at Linton Hall and we find the curriculum engaging and scholastically above grade from public school. OCEW is an outdoor class all ages have outdoors, rain or shine, exploring nature and science. My son enjoys the change of venue and the learnings. Music, Band, Irish Ensemble, Choir, Advanced Art, Bell Choir, Chess Club, Robotics, Student Govt are all present at Linton Hall which enhance the kids school life. New healthy lunches from Revolution foods excite us because it is innovative, healthy and the kids eat on the new lunch program. We are a health conscious family and I appreciate the school effort to support the way we live at home. Active community life !

Fantastic school with beautiful campus. The curriculum is difficult but the teaching is progressive. Unlike many schools, individual needs can be met because of caring teachers and small class sizes. LHS develops not only the student academically, but teaches children the need to serve others and give back to the community at large. Strong parental support makes this school exceptional. Students that leave LHS are prepared for high school honors and AP classes and typically score way above average on their placement tests.

In response to the person that said they had a PE teacher that also taught geometry. That had to have been more than 14 years ago. We have been at the school that long and I can tell you the PE teacher does not do double duty as a math teacher. Perhaps the analysis should be based on current teachers and not those of the past.

We are entering our third year at LHS and could not be happier! My son is in first grade and reading at least a year a head. The class size is small lending to amazing one-on-one learning. Great after school activities and clubs make for a well rounded student.

We transferred to Linton Hall a few years ago when my older daughter experienced extreme bullying at public school. Since that time, both my children have thrived in the warm and supportive environment that Linton Hall offers. Both children cannot say enough good things about the teachers and staff and both are excelling academically beyond my wildest expectations. As a parent, I couldn't be more pleased.

I have 4 students at Linton Hall at one time with two in the lower school and 2 in the upper school. This year, my youngest child started in the Little Sprouts program for toddler age and he just loves it. This is a new program at Linton Hall and I applaud the principal and teachers for starting it and it is thriving.!!!!! All my kids have done well at Linton Hall and you get out of it what you put into it! The teachers want you to do well and help you every step of the way to develop confident, well performing students. The campus is great for sports and extracurriculars.... Science , Math and IT are big progressives for upper school this year! Come shadow a day and you are sure to love it! After 5 kids here, we love the small class size, the code of conduct , the extracurriculars and both of my upper school kids are performing high school level English and Math. See for yourself! Last year some parents joined forces in negativity because they couldn't take over the school, they are just noise. And they say kids bully? WOW! We shamed those kids and parents out! They are negative just because their family members weren't hired! 5 kids at Linton Hall- parents and students HAPPY!

I love this school. My daughter has been there for the last 3 years and the experience has been wonderful. As an alum of a top NE prep school myself I cannot tell you how much I think of the classical education she is receiving and how well it compares to what I got for tens of thousands of dollars more. Her writing, science and math skills have been well developed as proven by her standardized test and PSAT scores. Mrs. Poole, the principal is a warm and wonderful person. The atmosphere of the school reflects that. Sister Patricia Anne does wonders for the kids writing and is a steady presence. Mrs. Raden, a former FBI CSI investigator is cool science teacher and inspires the kids. I love and admire the Benedictine tradition and the values that my daughter has and is developing. The school really does a lot more than play lip service to instilling values. The school is small and so are the classes. The campus is lovely. As with any school and particularly the small ones where people are paying good money for their kids education, you have the occasional "parent" issues. The school community tends to weed out the kids and parents that have an over inflated sense of entitlement.

The building has a unique history and the grounds are lovely and well-kept. However, Linton Hall is a school for the mediocre student at best. The learning is very rote and there appears to be no emphasis placed on the higher-level critical thinking skills. The school was found to be disappointing and the education lags behind that of other schools, both public and parochial.

The school is floundering. Over the last several years, we've witnessed a significant decline. Weak leadership combined with lack of vision and planning translates into quickly falling standards and an alarming rate of student attrition. Leadership seems almost invisible at times, paying lip service to parents' concerns with no results or follow-through. Communication is non-existent unless it's coming from the parent/teach organization. No continuity in the curriculum results in students who enter their next highest grade woefully unprepared. Contributing factors may be the steady teacher turnover as well as the lack of certified teachers or those with degrees in their subject areas. While a bachelor's in education meets the hiring standard, the better teachers hold multiple degrees and usually at least one in their subject area. Discipline is inconsistent at best and completely absent at worst. The school would greatly benefit from a change in leadership. Perhaps hiring a professional search committee this time in order to get a truly qualified leader is in order. While LHS still offers an average education it does not warrant its current price tag.

All of the teachers are not great. I had a physical education teacher who was also my geometry teacher - without a qualification for either. I had a teacher tell me - in front of an entire class - that I had a miserable father and came from an unhappy family. This school does not equip students - socially or academically - for secondary education & this is coming from a graduate student at William and Mary.

You can drive into the grounds and feel a sense of something special. I have mostly positive experiences with this school, and wish the administration would listen how how to make it better. The best part of this school is that the teachers really care about the students, regardless of their qualifications or abilities. There are darker undertones, students get good grades if the parents 'donate' time and friendship. While the school claims to have an admissions process, I believe everyone is accepted, deficits and all. There are also mysterious processes in place, whereby students' Moms (a select few) work as substitutes for their own child's classrooms; and a process where students are 'pushed up' a class or two. It seems there is only reactionary leadership here, limited planning and concrete rules.

My son attended Linton Hall and was very prepared for High School. The school environment is wonderful and we have been active since my son left the school. My son is now attending the University of Virginia and still thinks fondly of Linton Hall. I advise any parent to send their child here.

LHS is a great school with a wonderful community. ALL of the teachers are great and do a great job instructing the children. Their instructional approaches may be different but they all have one common goal and that is to provide your children with the best education. Don't be swayed by seemingly personal comments, you will find likes and dislikes no matter what school you choose for your children. I have children in both lower and upper school. Both programs are challenging. LHS is a school community that is high on parental involvement. It's the way things get done here and a lot gets done because of the parents. That is not a criticism of the school but is indicative of how the classroom and the home work together. I am glad we made the choice to send our children to Linton Hall. Check it out for yourself.

Clearly there is a division with the 5th grade parents. If you are a stay at home mom, you have an advantage and be prepared to home school at the same time, since there really is a huge deficit in the teaching ability of the 5th grade. If you are a professional working mom, I recommend a more academically capable school.

This is a great school for stay at home moms who have time to supplement the teaching. There are very interesting comments, and I hope the accusations against the parents/teachers don't sway your opinion. Linton hall is a family, and while it might not be the 'best' it certainly comes close.

Our 5th Grader had a FANTASTIC academic year this year and we attribute this to the LHS staff and especially the wonderful teacher. Please pay no attention to the ignorance of the Parent that wrote: "Do not send your child to the 5th grade at Linton Hall School. Teacher is incompetent and is unable to teach basic math". We all know who this parent is and there is nothing ever positive that comes from them. Focus instead on results and achievements and you will draw the same conclusion. Highly recommend this teacher and this school to any parent that wants the best for their children.

Linton Hall School is an excellent school that helps children excel academically and socially. The school is so much more than just a school--it has a strong community base where the older children look after the younger children, the teachers truly care about the students, and the parents all help at the school. Children that leave LHS have an excellent education and more often than not are above level and go on to graduate high school at the top of their class. I should know, I have already had one child leave and be VERY successful in high school.

I also have a child in 5th grade in the 2011/2012 school year. My child has loved all of her teachers at this school but has particularly enjoyed her 5th grade teacher. She has an energy and enthusiasm for teaching that has brought my very serious child out of his shell. She is more than competent as a teacher. I look forward to the day when my other children get her as their teacher.

As a long-time Linton Hall parent, I find the previous post disparaging the 5th grade teacher insulting and ignorant. The teacher - indeed, all the teachers - are committed to nurturing the students' educational, moral and spiritual needs. Without exception, the staff and faculty at Linton Hall are capable, confident and fully engaged. We started at LHS in Pre-K and will be there through 8th grade graduation. We have alternatives for a private education, Linton Hall is the only choice we ever seriously considered and have never doubted or regretted that decision.
