At this school my child thrived! He was previously going to a private catholic school which he hated. After 3 years of that, I decided to put him in Bush Hill and he loved it. He is now going to middle school and he is very advanced and engaged thanks to his elementary school.
Bush Hill is a great school!

My daughter with Down Syndrome has attended BH for 2 years now. She is striving in all aspects of her developmental journey. Bush Hill comes from a long road of inclusion so staff, teachers, students and also the bus drivers are absolutely involved in making sure that students with disabilities are welcome, valued, respected and happy!
Not only my daughter adores this school, but the kids there also love playing with having my daughter around. For any parent with kids with special needs coming to BH: you are at the right place! Know that even from Pre-K your child will be with caring and supportive professionals who are really intentional about their Childrens progress. I wish all the neighborhood schools would model BH.

This school is a complete joke, my son was being bullied and the school did nothing about, but made it seem like my son was the problem, the teaches do not communicate with the parents, or they wait until the lasty minute to send out a message. I WOULD STEER AWAY FROM THIS SCHOOL AS FAR AS POSSIBLE, COME WHAT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL YOU KNOW WHO HAS PARENTS THAT ACT LIKE THEY THE MEAN GIRLS AND STAND BACK AND GOSSIP ABOUT OTHE KIDS AND THE PARENTS!!!!!!!!

Homework for kids in elementary school should be reading. Period. I am not a fan of worksheets b/c I feel they are "fillers" and not reflective of what a student knows and most often a parent helps anyways. Projects over time are more indicative of how a student is processing information and understanding content. Bush Hill seems to have the approach of allowing teachers to determine the homework given (great), which then means it depends on the teacher on what you get (at least my impression). The homework my 3rd grader got was a reading log, math worksheet (ugh) and sometimes a more extended project. Overall a very appropriate amount.

We've been here for five years now and we have been extremely happy at the school. This is one of the smaller elementary schools in FCPS which enhances the sense of community and makes for a more intimate setting. I like dropping my child off every day and no matter the staff member at drop off every staff member knows my child's name. The teachers are AMAZING. They truly care about the students and the school would not be what it is without them. The new administration is great. They have brought renewed life to the school by being more active, listening, bringing more activities and experiences to the school. Diversity in this school is wonderful. My child learns so much from children from different backgrounds, children with special needs and children from different socioeconomic backgrounds. All of this enriches the experience at Bush Hill and the administration has been key in enriching the experience in these areas. Bush Hill will become an AAP center this fall 2018 which I hope will also enrich all the students with more levels of extended learning.

Parent teacher communication has been poor (although I assume that depends on the teacher) and theres been no interest in connecting parents (dont even receive contact information of other parents in the same classroom) , so theres a sense that parental involvement is undervalued here. Disappointing first year here, in that regard. Hopeful its a teacher-centered issue and not a school-wide culture. Will hang in another year to find out. A lot of other wonderful pluses at this school (diversity, inclusion, great PTA) but again, underwhelmed in the parent-teacher communication department.

My son has spent 2 years at this school, don't be deceived by the rating. The students are very diverse, and many don't speak English as their first language, which leads to lower test scores (the primary portion of greatschools.org score). As others have said its a smaller school, with roughly 500 students. This smaller size matters! By halfway through Kindergarten, most of the staff seemed to know my little guy by first name. Teachers are experienced, caring and enthusiastic. Principal and Vice are top notch. PTA is very active and everyone is focused on making Bush Hill the best it can be.

My son's teachers have been willing to go the extra mile to help students learn and improve. They are willing to address learning issues and don't treat kids with challenges as "problems" for the classroom. They seek parent involvement and administrative assistance to create a safe and caring space for kids to learn.

Bush Hill Elementary School is wonderful! Our daughter is starting her 4th year there and our son is starting his 2nd year. The teachers are kind and competent and the administration is accessible and highly involved. Furthermore, the facilities are excellent, whether it's the classrooms, the smart boards in the classrooms, the computer labs, the well-supplied library, the nice gym, or the large playground. The PTA is very active, sponsoring numerous fun events and fundraisers throughout the year, from movie nights to family games. the families in the school are very diverse, with people coming from dozens of countries and language backgrounds, while remaining united in the goal of educating our children for future success. We love Bush Hill Elementary!

Bush Hill ES has great teachers. I've been particularly impressed by my son's 1st grade teacher and my older son's 4th grade teacher. They both went the extra mile to challenge the kids and meet their individual needs. It is a smaller Fairfax County elementary school with tons of diversity, which I like. Test scores reflect diversity but if you're hands on with your kid's education (meaning you make sure homework is done, assignments are completed on time, study for test), he/she will do great. The school is small enough to get to know the administration and principal on a first name basis. The PTA is active and has a great group of caring, committed parents. After-school enrichment classes add to the standard curriculum and offer pretty cool.

I have two children at Bush Hill. It is a wonderful neighborhood school. The teachers are very kind and great at communicating with parents. The PTA is active. We like the caring atmosphere in the school, where each student is made to feel part of the community. I wish the arts were a little stronger, but overall our children are getting an excellent education and love going to school each day. It's a best kept secret of FCPS.
