My son started Cameron in Kindergarten. He's finishing 4th grade right now. We both really love the experiences he's had at the school, and all of his teachers have been EXCELLENT. It's a shame the school's rating on this site is as low as it is, because it leaves the false impression that they don't provide a high-quality education for the students, which couldn't be more wrong.

The school is also really diverse, so it provides a great environment for students to get to know and become friends with other kids from different ethnicities, countries, and cultures. My guess as to why the test scores aren't higher is because quite a few of the students (and their families) don't speak English as their first language, which might cause some communication and understanding difficulties. But it's certainly not because the teachers are of low quality. They have been friendly, patient, and caring every year so far. And the extracurricular activities organized by the PTA (Back to School night, Open House, International Nights, etc.) are a blast!

I've worked all over the county, and I'm not leaving Cameron. I started writing because of how aggressive the comment from 2/13/2020 is. I am a teacher here, not a parent, and these websites are not managed by anyone in the school. For goodness sakes, the principal they have listed is two principals ago! Few teachers even glance at these websites because they are full of confirmation bias. The simple fact is this school rates low because it pins schools against each other by test scores, without regard to student population or mobility (how many students move in/out mid-year). If you want real input, talk to parents in the parent center, come to school events, ask a Cameron teacher questions, read the ACTUAL demographics website provided by the county. Plenty of adults talk about algorithms, period. I'd love to know more about what aspects "need a major revamp" and I hope that parent is sharing their concerns with our PTA, parent liaisons, and administration. Real growth comes from real involvement.

Most teachers within FCPS are effective. Fairfax County is the second wealthiest county in the USA, and it attracts quality educators. Many teachers at Cameron stay for multiple years despite the yearly option of transferring in county because they love the community. Many of my colleagues have their masters and have far more experience teaching than this website quantifies.

I think every school in this country can focus more on the WHOLE child. Your children are not their test scores and their character will carry them further in life than academics can.

Leadership is not just administration, though our administration is strong. We are a staff of active leaders and teachers are encouraged to grow as professionals.

FCPS is improving on the county level at all schools, but Cameron teachers are attentive to needs without being dismissive; meaning if one strategy is not helping, they work on the next.

Bullying needs full circle support. Parents need to be a part of the conversation with the school when their children report to them, but they also need to recognize the reality that all children, including their own, make mistakes. There are 3 sides to every story; your child's, the other child's, and the truth. We don't get to the truth without open conversation. In my 7+ years of education, I have seen far too many parents at multiple schools put too much faith on their child's word, and then getting upset when another parent does the same for their child telling a different story. Teach your children how to report in the moment, how to say, "Stop" without giggling, and how to care about the way their actions make others feel.

Clearly the rating dated November 2019 is NOT a parent. What parent talks about algorithms on a website that it believes to somehow do with the low rating of the school?!?! Only a faculty member would post something like that to save face on the simple fact that this school rates low because the quality of education at this school is low! Prior to the school administrators removing the bad reviews, you were able to read what real parents had to say. This school needs a major revamp.

I will never understand the algorithm for this website. Do not let this rating fool you - Cameron Elementary is one of the best Fairfax County public schools in Alexandria. If the bad rating keeps Cameron one of the best kept secrets, then so be it.

We moved to this school from an expensive private school and have found the quality of education at Cameron has FAR exceeded our expectations. The leadership from the administrative staff is outstanding. The teachers really care for each student and their growth, not only with academics but in their personal growth. I'm so grateful we decided to give Cameron a chance.

The school is great. She has been here for 3 years so far, about to go to her fourth and we are excited to go back. She is a transfer student because I really don't want to send her to her base school, and so far they have been really helpful with that. We are sad that this would be her last year if we can't find a place to leave around that area but we are positive. Every single teacher she had have been amazing, they are dedicated 100 percent to the care and learning of our children. Also the cafeteria staff are really nice to the kids and the parents as well. Also I would like to appoint that my daughter has problem reading and writing, and this pass year they put her in this little program before school that help her in such a way I'm forever grateful for their hard work.

I did not want to send my daughter there because of their low testing scores. However we decided to give it a try for a few months before moving. I was very pleased by their friendly staff: they always say hi and smile to parents no matter they know you or not. Those great traits must have influenced their students. Most kids I met and communicated with are polite and their parents are friendly. My daughter always told me that kindergarteners should be caring and sharing--I love it. I was also amazed by how much my daughter can read after one year being in Cameron. It could just because we are lucky that my daughter had a great teacher. One thing a bit bothers me is that we look different from most of families there, so I found hard time to make connections.

Cameron Elementary is a very unique and outstanding. Public school in Fairfax County. It has a very caring staff, and mostly all the teachers are great and take time to help every student. It will eventually become one of the premier school in the county.

Cameron is a great school! Ms McCurry just became the Principal and I believe she will take Cameron students to top notch. She's very kind and fair. Keep watching Cameron is good but with her, it will be Great! Parent involvement is fair but should improve some of the teachers are top notch. But I'm hopefully things will continue to improve.

This really is an amazing school. This was my first grader's first year at Cameron and our first time in the Fairfax County School district. It has been nothing but a pleasurable experience. The teachers, administration, and staff genuinely care about the students. They keep up updated on your child's progress via Blackboard, email, and phonecalls. There is an open door policy when you have a concern and that concern is always handled in the most positive and professional way possible. My son loves this school. It was his first experience with a public school and it could not be a better choice. I HIGHLY recommend this school for academics, character building, hands-on, interactive care and learning.

I highly recommend this school. The teachers are awesome as are the office staff. The Principle know every student by name and recognizes the parents, he may not know your name but he knows that you are so-and-so's parent.

This school is AWESOME!!! I used to attend this school back in 93. I now have kids myself, though I no longer live in the area I would recommend any parent to enroll their kids in the school.
