You need to be mentally tough to go to this school. There are about 3 fights everyday in each grade at this school and the teachers and staff just watch it happen. One of the gym teachers is sexist, cusses at students, throws stuff at people, and insults people. I know this is true because it recently just happened to my classmate. The kids are incredibly rude and disrespectful. Another thing is the principals blame everything that goes wrong on the students. The fire alarm goes off about 5 times a month because of the constructors in the basement. A good portion of the teachers just give a kids a worksheet and dont even teach them about it. Kids are constantly bullied. The school is in the red zone so at the end of the year in advisory we have to study in the morning. Since none of the teachers can get ahold of the worst kids they target the that they know will listen. There have been several alive and dead animals in the school including a snake that still hasnT been caught and a dead squirrel hanging out of the ceiling. The bathrooms are constantly flooded. And the guards guard the bathroom so that only one person can go in at a time and if you really need to go they wont let you also the one of the Guards told a kid to his face that he will never succeed in life. Also some of the male guards will literally go in the female restroom. Also one of the teachers has hung a kid off a railing. So to kind of end this off you must be able to learn without extra help and need to be e ströme Lu mentally strong

There are some excellent teachers at this school. The school is a crazy mess though because the administration is so bad. If your child is skilled at avoiding bullies and doesn't need any extra help then they would do fine at this school. Just have them practice not going to the bathroom all day before school starts because the bathrooms are fior vapors only.

From firsthand knowledge, it is regrettable to report that George Washington Middle School is grappling with significant challenges. The school's environment, instead of fostering learning and development, is often dominated by unruly and occasionally violent behavior.

The administration, tasked with managing these issues, appears to provide insufficient support to teachers to address these challenges effectively. Their unresponsiveness not only intensifies the burden on those dealing with these behavioral problems daily but also significantly hinders the overall learning process.

Moreover, the school faces additional systemic issues. The misuse of electronic devices, insufficient interdisciplinary collaboration among teachers, and a flawed approach to student recognition all contribute to a disheartening environment that calls for decisive intervention and transformation.

One issue that merits particular attention is the handling of the honors program. What should be an emblem of academic achievement has become disappointingly disconnected from genuine merit. The school's (and ACPS's) focus on critical race theory seems to have driven this shift, leading to a disturbing trend of recognizing underachievement and distorting the true purpose of the honors program. Instead of distinguishing high-achieving students, it appears that virtually anyone can be designated an honors student, thus undermining the program's credibility and devaluing the accomplishments of truly deserving students.

In light of the existing challenges, George Washington Middle School may benefit from an external intervention by the state. A comprehensive transformation focusing on reestablishing discipline, educational excellence, and genuine merit-based recognition is urgently needed.

Put plainly, the situation at George Washington Middle School is a cause for concern. As someone intimately familiar with the school's inner workings, it is my hope that bringing these issues to light will help trigger the necessary reforms. This is a critical step in ensuring that the school can fulfill its central role in educating and preparing our future generations.

This school is horrible the amount of kids who vape drugs ete is horrible also fights I know fights happen a lot of middle schools but if you want 4-5 fights a day dont come here I was an Spanish class when I fight broke out between 2 people when they were fighting I almost got hurt because the desk got slammed in my way aiming towards my stomach it is not safe. Also the amount of bullying at this school is also insane you can never focus in class even if its honors if youre going here good luck. Also most 6th graders this year left because of how bad it is.

This is probably the worst school I've ever had the displeasure of being at. Gas leaks all the time, ceiling tiles falling, bomb threats/shooter threats on the regular. Some of the teachers were nice/accommodating- but that's all up to chance. Others were pretty awful!

The resources at GWMS are amazing and the educators are focused and at the top of their field. Our children have had great experiences at the school. They and their peers have also scored very high on standardized national tests which I think is a testament to the schools quality of education.

Our son, and our whole family, have had a terrific experience at GW Middle School. Strong academics. Talented and caring faculty who really get to know the kids. Top-notch activities, fairs, language programs, Academic clubs, (and sports beginning in 8th grade). The college-track students do exceptionally well on national tests, too.

GW Middle School has a modern, challenging curriculum which focuses on fundamentals while simultaneously offering some of the best arts and electives in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The teaching staff is seasoned and generally have impressive credentials. The school's administration is strong and the Alexandria community is supportive. Our family expects our public schools to provide a high-caliber education, and GW Middle has delivered that to our daughter. She is well prepared for a rigorous high school experience next year. The higher-ups try to do this, but they fail tremendously. Most of the time they try using things that work with little kids, and kids in middle school don't like that kind of stuff, so it fails, and creates the opposite effect.

The principal is not very assertive, and doesn't try to figure out problems. Don't even get me started on the academic principal. I can only speak for the academic principal of my grade. The academic principal will sound like a broken record, and it's kind of funny to anybody not in my grade. Don't even get me started on the Dean of students. At the beginning of one day, he tried getting the kids entering the school to get in a single file line, which might be possible with about 30 kids, but over 200 kids at a single time is impossible unless they are all good, well-mannered kids.

My main problem is the lack of help kids with learning differences. In fact, the most some kids get is help from a fellow kid. Don't get me wrong, those kids are nice, but they don't have the experience needed.

We have found the teachers to be well-qualified and good communicators. Our son has thrived under almost all his teachers at GW and they have communicated well with our families. The principal and academic deans for each grade are good leaders.

GW Middle School has excellent academics and appropriately incorporates team learning and group work into the curriculum. While smaller schools in the region sometimes opportunistically denigrate a large-size-school, we have found that GWs large and diverse student body coupled with the school's strong staff and resources have provided our son outstanding opportunities for growth and learning. His class has a wonderful group of young men and women who have accomplished much academically at GW. They seem to have a solid, not entitled, culture and to have had some fun over the last three years, too. Our family highly recommends our neighborhood GW Middle School. The modern curriculum is focused and offers many languages, arts and electives. We have found the teachers to be skilled and well-educated. The diversity is plus and ACPS provides transportation to school which helps us get to work in the mornings. We have found that the administrators and the teachers respect the voice of parents. The PTA and community support are amazing, too. The school is relatively large, however, our children's class sizes have been small and we think the school's size has been a plus. There is no tuition costs, either, which helps us fund our kids' college accounts.

As Alexandria has gentrified and ACPS has taken a great leap forward over the last ten years, the academic and arts programs at this school have become second to none. Unless your child is in an honors level class, the work is not demanding enough and the expectations are low. It has not set a good precedent for the kinds of work and deadlines that my kids should expect to provide in high school and beyond.

There is too much reliability on packaged educational products; and teaching to the standardized test. Creative approaches to teaching are not prevalent. Most of that is due to decisions by the school system's administration.

Given the school's size, they do a good job managing the students. The teachers are enthusiastic and supportive.

George Washington Middle School is good, to say the least. The electives are really good (especially band and orchestra). The core classes are good too, but some teachers are really not good at all. Most of them are good, and a lot of them are great. All three of the best teachers I've ever had were from GW. There isn't much bullying anymore, but there is some teasing going around. I don't know why people are giving this one out of five stars. They are probably overprotective parents whose kids are whiny babies. At the same time, I don't know why people are giving this school five stars. George Washington Middle School is an above average school with a great elective program, good academics, and great students and teachers. If you don't want your precious child to experience the real world, then send them to a private school. If you don't want to waste money, GW is a valid choice for any parent out there.

My daughter is a rising seventh grader at GWMS nd has been consistently challenged and engaged by the teachers. They have excellent core teachers, a breadth of electives, and engage foreign language teachers. I am particularly happy that they recombined the schools and went back to the teams approach. My daughter is very happy there!

I am an 8th grader at GW. During my three years there, I have encounter many wonderful teachers and classmates. I have had teachers that changed my life and friends that I will never loose contact with. GW has an amazing music program and arts programs. The choir, band and orchestra all receive superior ratings at festival (the top score you can be given) while performing high difficulty music. I have been blessed to be part of the orchestra, directed by Jonathan Jones. I have improved my playing immensely and given the opportunity to participate in school trips to New York City and strings competitions. I have also participated in competitions like Science Fair and History Day, which have helped me learn researching skills, project management, and presentation techniques. I wouldn't trade my experiences at GW for anything, and I would never choose to go to a different school, no matter how many times I was asked.

While not perfect (no school is), GW is a world-class educational institution by almost any standard. The educators whom we have encountered there as a family have been very good instructors and have motivated our children in an effective and positive way. They teachers are generally very accomplished accademically as well. We, as parents, also like that our children attend school with kids who have different backgrounds. We are hopeful that he school's diversity and our teaching will help them avoid the "entitlement attitude" that can so easily be acquired in Alexandria which has a large affluent community.

We, as parents, think that GW is an outstanding, high-caliber educational institution. We guide our children who go there to focus on adacemics and music. The school's honors classes challenge our kids in a way that does not induce stress. Language teachers and programs are excellent. GW Middle School is a great school. The George Washington Middle School building was split into two schools (GW1 and GW2) in 2009. The decision was made to create more personal environments for students and to focus more closely on their needs. George Washington's curriculum was overhauled that same year and students now follow the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program, which emphasizes languages along with mathematics and science.

We had heard pretty lousy things about GW. After a year, we've seen little evidence of the exaggerated problems about which we were warned. The Honors Program (which is basically self-selected) is generally good, and particularly strong in history/social studies. The art program is spectacular, as are the chorus and band programs (art and music in particular are better and more visible than at any nearby private school). GW is actually two separate schools within one complex and this means that each GW unit is smaller than a typical elementary school, which provides for a ton of hands-on attention.

I have nothing but high marks to give GW. My son has health needs and they have been on top of things with that. He's in honor classes and is challenged for the most part. The classes are engaging. He's had the opportunity to participate in many interesting projects and there are a ton of interesting after school clubs and activities. I am a very involved parent and after reading these review I'm starting to realize that great sites such as this, while extremely helpful as a starting point, have to be just that---a starting point. You have to narrow down your school choices and then go visit for yourself. We love GW and were concerned about all the reports about bullying prior to our son's beginning there. But, he's had no such issues and without question we know he's getting a great education! Im just hoping his new school will be just as great when we move this summer.

GW is a disgrace. There is constant bullying and much of it is racially motivated - nothing gets done AT ALL about that. If your child is not on the advanced track he/she have virtually no shot to acheive all they are capapble of because the kids run rampant over the administration. Just look at the one student's comments re how great the school is. Notice the horrific grammar and spelling for anyone in middle school. Then the comment that there is no trouble at the school unless you are looking for it - sounds more like a prison than a school. Until the PARENTS of most of the kids actually CARE and make learning and discipline a priority their kids, and those around them, will continue to suffer. Go to parent/teacher night and you'll understand what I'm talking about as few of the non-advanced kids' parents attend. Funny though, they always seem to make the sporting events. I specifically left Alexandria (a place my wife and I absolutely loved) to go to Arlington for the schools - best decision! Arlington school system is MILES ahead - the parents are engaged, the kids range in ability but are way more respectful and don't bring dow others around them!

Over the past few years more and more families have chosen to send their children to GW, and it now has critical mass to be a great school. Alexandria is one of the most educated places in the US in terms of people holding undergrad and graduate degrees. Now that these parents are keeping their kids in the public schools, things are improving rapidly. It says a lot that there are 2x as many kids per year in the elementary years in Alexandria as there are at the high school level. As this new, demanding group moves through, it is getting ACPS to improve across the board.
