This is one of the most horrid schools I’ve ever been to in my entire life. The violence was horrendous, over 100 fights my 8th grade year with no accountability for the students causing the fights! The administration doesn’t enforce rules and even expects the students to engage in fighting. DO NOT PUT YOUR KID THREW THIS!

This School is a Nightmare - Avoid at All Costs!
My daughter was traumatized attending this middle school. Fights erupt constantly, with students targeting each other based on ethnicity. It's a breeding ground for gang culture, with students boasting and supporting one another's terrible behavior. The administration is MIA. They turn a blind eye to the rampant bullying, cursing, and physical violence. My daughter couldn't even bring basic things like a laptop or phone, fearing theft or destruction. Even wearing a nice outfit felt like an invitation for trouble. This school fosters a climate of fear and intimidation. Weak students are easy prey, left vulnerable by the administration's negligence. My daughter will carry the scars of this experience for a long time. Don't put your child through this!

My son went there 2007-2010, it was bad back then. Sounds like it's not any better. Lots of bullying by students and there were a few hard-headed teachers. There were some teachers who cared, but those were the longest 3 years of our lives!

This school is the absolute worst. Iam currently an 8th grader at this school and let me just it's a living nightmare. First of all, There was a whole stabbing that happened there between two seventh graders. I would've never expected anything like this from this school. Second, Constant fights and bullying are the worst here. I got bullied at this school and they don't even do anything about it. The teachers here are mean and they don't even care about your future. The kids at this school love drama and love to start fights. They also cuss out teachers and are very disrespectful to teachers and other students. Definitely would not reccomend this school!!

Posted: August 27, 2019

Teachers send homework with students and students are responsible for completing homework and turning in homework.

Posted: August 27, 2019

Teachers challenge students intellectual learning skills even if they see that a child is registered in the wrong course.

Posted: August 27, 2019

This begins at home and the school reinforces those qualities. Those who do not receive strong character training at home will be able to receive it at this school.

Posted: August 27, 2019

Administration is always willing to assist and support families and students.

Posted: August 27, 2019

Students are placed in certain classes and recognized by teachers based on the students performance.

Excellent in supporting my child in his IEP, common middle school bullying, and the staff is some of the most experienced and kind employees HCPS has to offer.

Posted: June 19, 2017

Posted: June 19, 2017

Bullying behavior at this school is evident and not appropriately dealt with.

Posted: June 19, 2017

My personal experience the school does not care about student success and therefore there is no support

Posted: June 19, 2017

It's happening every day to students who study hard and to students who do not wear named brand clothing

Posted: June 19, 2017

Substandard
If I could give a true rating it would be -10 (minus 10)
This school needs to be REZONED
to create a better mix of students
Teachers should be evaluated and scrutinized for negative attitudes

I went to this school from 2008-2010, I was rezoned after the redistricting back in 2010 and I'm glad I was in the area to be rezoned. Looking through some of these reviews it seems nothing has changed. The environment their is dreadful. There is rampant bullying, the bathrooms are disgusting. There is not much else for me to say but I would not recommend your child going here. Try Hungary Creek Middle School.

This school has to be the worst in Henrico County not to mention has been denied National Accrediation for the past 4 years straight. The faculty is incompetent and test scores prove it hands down. Administration is no better either. The chorus teacher has to be one of the worst I've seen yet and doesn't seem to mind NEVER placing first in any competitions. My advice to you if you are thinking of moving into the area or placing your children here is to think again! Honestly I wouldn't send my dog here much less my children.

For a middle school experience I imagine there are better schools out there, but I'm not finding a whole lot of bad things to say about Brookland Middle. We went into our experience here with a lot of concerns based on the reviews. I honestly haven't had too many complaints so far.

My kid is currently in 7th grade. She's attended Brookland for a year an a half now. She's had a couple issues with bullying that seem to have been resolved quickly by administration. She had a bad experience with one teacher, but the rest have been fantastic and have had good things to say about my kid.

She has excelled there. She enjoys the Choral program there very much. IT IS FANTASTIC and I highly recommend it. I like this principal and hope he sticks around. The kids seem to respect him and like him.

I do hear from my daughter that there are a lot of fights, but she stays out of the drama and doesn't have a lot of problems. IDK how many are "a lot," but she usually laughs about it because of how petty and ridiculous a lot of it is.

Overall, I almost gave Brookland 3 stars, but it's better than average. 3.5 stars is prob a bit more accurate. It's not without it's flaws. The facility probably needs some updating. I do like most of my daughter's teachers VERY much. Just like any other school; you have your good ones who really seem to be passionate about what they do and then you have the others who are just going through the motions. I'd say the good definitely outweighs the bad here.

I think we, as a community, need to begin giving this school a chance to redeem itself.

It's very good school
And i like Brookland middle school
It's big and she have good teachers
and brookland it's my school now

Administration is horrid in this facility. There is one admin that always bosses the kids around and that admin was really mean. And ALL the science teachers are so mean that I dropped an A to a C (possibly an F) The science teachers man... They need to learn some respect.

Brookland for the most part is okay. I went there 2 years ago, for all of 6-8th grade. I'm a sophomore now, but looking back on it Brookland wasn't as bad as school as reviews here say. I'll agree the lunches weren't exactly gourmet but they weren't bad either. As for this "controversial math program" I never witnessed it myself, but if this is true it should be brought up to the school. As for the students, some were bad yes and some were good. The thing I learned was make good friends and if you don't mess with the "bad kids" they won't mess with you, and there's nothing to really fear there. If fights broke out, teachers broke it up as soon as they possibly could. There's also a program that's called "SilenceHurts" it's to help those who are being bullied report students in an anonymous matter, and it can be from anything to a stolen item to life threatening. They DO respond and will take care of it. Unless the entire place changed in 2 years, it was an alright school and I hope it stays an alright school or changes to a better school.

This is my last year at Brookland, finally. I rated this school at a one because of the things I'm about to tell you about. Let me start out with the students, the students at this school are loud, they don't care about their education, and they get into to many physical fights. Secondly, the teachers, the teachers at this school don't care about our future and our education. I would have to say some teachers can teach and care but a lot don't. They don't teach us well, they go through material to fast. When we don't past quizzes, or test they put it on us. Also the administration is rude. They want us to pass the SOL so bad, but the teachers just can't do their jobs. Thirdly the lunch at this school is quite terrible, the food is dry, messy, and the pizza's are always non-cooked. Don't get me wrong there are good teachers and students out there.

Posted: April 6, 2014

Took me 3 days to get someone from administration to return my call, very poor communication skills in the office. Certain issues need to be followed up on and things need to be addressed probably not brushes aside. There are some good teachers here!

Posted: April 1, 2014

That the Administration is neglectful in their decision making, when it is proven that a teacher has treated your child adversely through out the year. And then decide at the end of the year to change the child to a different class, when at this point will not have a positive impact on his grades or his self esteem. The Administration should investigate and actually keep to the action plan that was discussed with the concerned parent and not let things fall by the wayside. There are good teachers at Brookland, that are their as an educator and role models; and those teachers I give kudos to.

My daughter attended Brookland Middle for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Her first year at Brookland was okay. I was giving the school the benefit of the doubt because it is a very old school. Her seventh grade year, they started the construction to renovate the school. In my opinion, her last year was awful because she was given incorrect information to prepare her for high school. We had a few issues with a couple of her teachers, but got the issues resolved with a few calls to the Assistant Principal.

Posted: November 6, 2013

Horrible school. I wish I had some other alternative for my 6th grade daughter. She is picked at and bullied from the moment she steps onto the bus and the drivers and teachers do nothing. The impression they give is that they don't want to be bothered. If your child is at all different or emotional don't send them. They won't be allowed to defend themselves and the staff won't do it.

My son is starting his third year and the 8th grade at bms and it really has been a good surprise. I also heard alot of bad comment about this school that were really unjusified. He has had really good teachers who truly cares about his success. He has not had any bad altercations with any other kids and has made good friends. He has received honor roll several times. The renovations look great and are a true plus for this school.

My daughter started Brookland in 2013. The school year has just started, and I'm not sure quite what to think. I'd heard a great number of negative comments about the school and went to talk to the principal during the summer. He seemed like a nice fellow who genuinely cared about the students and was doing everything he could to ensure their safety and academic success. He helped us sign up for the "cub camp" introductory program and even gave us his direct cell phone number to call if there were any problems. My daughter had honestly been terrified about going to the school until that point. His reassurances quelled her fears, thankfully. Now that she has been in class for a few weeks, I can say that the teachers are nice, my daughter is happy, and academics seem to be in fine form. But there have been organizational issues and problems with distributing the school-mandated laptops that leave me a little worried. Worse, the principal has yet to return any of my phone calls. Bottom line: I think I like Brookland. I'm fairly certain my daughter will do well, even thrive. But I cannot shake that concern. So my final judgment will wait until I've seen a little more.

I wish i had done my research on this school before i moved to the area. From the first day i went to the school it was such a turn off, some students dressed as if they were going to the club, teachers sent about 3 students to the office to change. The students were using foul language and teachers just walked by without saying a word, seems like they are afraid of the students. On the first day my child started, he was teased about his clothes being "Gay" which was just a regular buttoned shirts and jeans, they asked if he was "Gay" because he has a "soft voice"..note he is in 6th grade. Students throw papers across the classroom. He was also grabbed on the butt which made him uncomfortable. I can go on and on about what happened during his first week at the school. He is coming from Pocahontas Middle School and i would definately give them a 10 star. I am not saying all the students are that bad, but something needs to be done at this school. They need to be more strict. Will definately be trying to move my child, i honestly fear for his safety. I feel so bad when my child comes home crying to me that he doesn't wanna go back there.
