This is a fabulous school for all young scholars and I love learning from the amazing staff and the sports programs are fabulous and I couldn't have whished a better school because the school sprit is amazing!

My child is mixed race. This is a good school, but racial prejudice is still an issue, as is the case throughout America. I'm white and there is simply no reason for anyone to use the "N" word, and as frequently as my kid heard it. To broad brush the entire school as sub-performing though is unfair,

The school getting a 5/10 ranking is COMPLETELY WRONG. This is a useless ranking system, Freeman is consistently one of the top schools in the state outpacing most in the region. Please look up other school ranking websites like US News and ignore this one, Tuckahoe Middle also gets unfair rankings. A great school!!!

My five children graduated from Douglas Freeman as did I. It is a fantastic school, there is no way it gets less. Freeman is ranked 34 in the state, Midlothian 35. Freeman gets a 5, Midlo gets a 7. So it says the White kids do very well, minority kids faulter. Same classroom, same teacher......a bogus ranking.

This school did nothing to stop severe bullying. I went to administration several times about this particular girl, and they did nothing at all! It got so bad that we pulled my daughter out and let her finish high school online.

It breaks my heart to give Freeman just 3 stars. It SHOULD be 5!. I have had four children attend Freeman. It can be whatever you want it to be. With very involved parents and a student living in a good environment, your child will do fine and can get into great colleges and universities. However, if you have a child who that is not motivated and driven, it is no good. The culture at the school seems to be just to get the kids out of there. The front office is unwelcoming and you are treated as an unwanted guest when you walk in. I have seen very little - let me correct that - I have seen NO outreach by the faculty/counselors to the students or parents in an attempt to improve a student's grades or situation. There is a new principal this year (2016-17) and he seems to be on the ball. The last principal, Anne Poates, was just passing time there. The school counseling office, with whom I have worked the last 13 years/4 children is really the weakest link. Very poor college counseling and very unhelpful with students needing assistance. In fact, they seemed to do whatever they could to avoid helping. The only way this school is going to bounce back is for much of the dead wood to be purged and get some new blood in there. It did not happen in time for my children, and I hope it happens soon. My experience at other schools has been much better.

I am currently a Freshman at Freeman high school and I really love it so far! Every teacher is involved with me not just as a student, but as a person, to make sure that I get the best individual help that is necessary. I was terrified to go into high school and thought I would never fit in because of my experiences at other schools, but ever since the first day, I have been making friends, and getting the best individual education I have probably ever had. The counseling department is beyond amazing with just how fast and professionally they handle situations. DSF is the most amazing school I have ever been to. I feel lucky,happy, safe, and very comfortable being at this school because of the diversity. I have not only learned that being different and unique is a good trait to have, but to be proud and embrace of your diversity, and individuality . I am proud to be a rebel!

Not a very good experience so far for my freshman daughter. Some of the leadership teachers are good but there is not support and not diversity for the kids. Work is easy compared to middle school

I had two kids attend this school, with very different academic experiences (one in center, one not). There is a student culture at Freeman that lacks respect for diversity - even in the leadership center. There is a strong emphasis on white, middle class superiority that may be offensive, even to white, middle class kids like my own. This is not only indicative of the students, but permeates through most of the faculty. The academics in the center are demanding, but often seem neelessly so. My oldest ended up with a 3.4 gpa and didn't get into any of the top schools that many non-center kids got into. However, she did graduate college with honors and went on to a fully funded graduate degree at a top university - citing skills gained in the center as a key advantage to this success. The athletic director was a male chauvinist and encouraged a brand of masculinity that went out of date in the 1950's. I was horrified by my son's experience and removed him from participation, and eventually the school. Also, he had learning disabilities and the school had absolutely no mechanism in place to handle them.

I couldn't imagine going to a better high school! I graduated in 2012 and frequently go back for football games etc. I love how diverse this school is compared to other schools in the region. Everyone is super friendly and welcoming. I also loved how right off the back we got to intermingle with other classes as well. There really are some good, outstanding teachers who care about their students. While I was not in the leadership program, I did take mostly AP and honors classes and loved the teachers I did have. Some may be hard on you, but that's just because they see your potential. I loved how hard some of my teachers pushed me at Freeman because it is really paying off in college today and increased my determination and perseverance. THANK YOU FREEMAN HIGH SCHOOL! :)

I echo what another parent said about the leadership program. My son graduated from the program, worked like a dog, and ended up at the same college as his old friends at Deep Run who took honors. One admission person in a northeast school said the program just sounded "light" compared to IB, hard science, or one of VA governors schools. Also, the style of writing he learned didn't seem to fly once he got to college-- a TA told him to "unlearn" what he was taught in HS as far as writing. I think the classes would be great for an academic summer camp but not for college prep. I would stay away unless your child is just crazy for the particular topics.

I'm in the leadership program and I'm glad that someone finally came out and said that this was a grind. The work just piles up and the classes that seemed interesting in the beginning start to get on your nerves. Everyone is super conservative, which is fine except that anyone who is not can feel really weird. I am starting to feel like nothing I am learning here will ever be important in my life except for my non leadership classes. Very NOT diverse compared to Moody.

If you want your children to succeed keep an eye with this school. There are some teachers who don't care updating your children grades for a month, bullying within the school and administration doesn't do anything about that. We need to opt and request for good charter schools in this state, the public system is completely failing. As parents we should be concern about the good education of our children, we need to speak up so our children future wont go on the wonder. Unless you are reach and have money to pay a private school but the ones we can't afford our children are going to get hurt. No wonder other children are coming from other countries with high pay to do the jobs that our children's suppose to be doing because the school system is failing completely. Shame on the system.

I am currently a freshman at Freeman High School. I find that sometimes this school is very intimidating. The school does not do a very good job of keeping 9th graders away from 10th grade and higher. They often bully the freshmen during Lunch and gym classes. The 10th graders even have class with freshmen during gym. I find that I have to sometimes remind the teachers to update there grades even when its been almost a month since the last update. I have seen one of my teachers give a student money before many of times , and many of the teachers choose not to talk about teaching material, which causes students not to learn and make test scores lower. I am glad this year is almost over, and I sure hope that next year is better.
