Moody Middle School

At this school, I have experienced a lot. For example, most of the teachers are really nice and make learning fun. I also learn a lot of new things, which is good for knowledge. I was able to make some really good friends here and we all would participate in many competions. Moody would be very fun at times! Although Moody is fun, I got really annoyed at some things. For example, some of the work would be really hard and sometimes I get questions on things I never learned. Overall, Moody has been a great school.

To be completely honest, Moody is a good school and you could say the same because compared to some other schools its way better, for example Brookland MS. The teaching is pretty good, but I feel like the teachers could put in some more effort into their work, because it just feels like they aren't putting enough effort into their job. They don't really much about the bullying, because they never really say anything about it and we have a bunch of fights going on all the time, and yeah the teachers stop the fight, but I feel like they could do just more than just stopping the fights and leaving it at that. They could really do more to raise some awareness to the topic, but it seems like they don't really want to because they never really do anything about it. The emotional support they do here is great, but it feels like you can't talk to them about anything, because if it's anything that is like a tad bit concerning they immediately call home. It feels like you can't really talk to anybody there because they just either can't keep their mouth shut and snitch on you or they belittle you and act like your problems mean nothing. Other than all of it's flaws Moody is a pretty good school, but it definitely could be better.

This school isn't that good. I really feel let down by some of the teachers in this school and the overall academic curriculum of this school. For example, on the recent SOL Math Test, there were some concepts that were not taught on the test. Even though I got a good score on the Reading SOL Test, my English teacher never really prepared us. The week before the SOL Test, we spent a class playing football outside. Although it was a fun experience, I feel like the time could've been spent reviewing material for the SOL. One thing that was good about the school was my science teacher. She was a very good teacher who put a lot of effort in her job. Overall, I feel like this school isn't really worthy of the praise that it's gotten over the past decade or so. It's important to not that I don't hate Moody nor hold any ill will against those who attend the school or the faculty at the school. Most of the teachers and students are really nice people who have unique and wonderful personalities.

Ronald Meija is without a doubt the greatest teacher I or my child have ever had the pleasure of meeting. In my child's time of need where there was no one else to turn to he stepped forward and helped him through the toughest time of his life at that point. When he and another student were being bullied Mr. Meija helped them through this tough experience. While this school was very tough I know my child will look back at this school in a positive light thanks to the work of Mr. Ronald Meija. Many thanks to him.

I was extremely impressed with the staff of this great school. A teacher that stood out to me was Ronald Mejia, he stood up for students that were getting bullied and made my time at Moody a wonderful experience.

The administration at this school completely ignores the racism at school. You could tell someone about someone saying a racist at school and they would be like I'll do something about it and nothing happens. Also, there is a lot of discrimination at this school between IB and zoned kids. They deny kids from the IB program and then they end up in all IB classes anyway and then call it "advanced". Then IB kids, when they find out you're zoned, say "you're zoned?" and then say zoned in such a derogatory tone that at this point it's a slur. Then there's also the loads of homework that are unnecessary. They give a bunch of classwork and then focus on the warmup for almost the whole class time that all the classwork becomes homework. If you're thinking of taking your kid to Moody, think about my review and then decide.

My student is not special ed, but he has a different learning style and is an extroverted perceiver on the Myers-Briggs test. That does not make a difference at this school. The program is designed for judgers.

I have not heard of bullying at this school. I think the school is effective at ensuring that that does not happen, however they don't address alleged vaping in the bathrooms.

We were so disappointed with the school, that we pulled our student out of it and put him into a private school. He had one year left to go in the three-year IB program, however he had grown to hate school and was frustrated on a daily basis. He is much happier at his new school, and they do not allow computers (except for calculators).

In the IB program, the students have an enormous volume of homework, and they don't always have the tools to complete it without parent assistance. For example, in the 7th grade, my student and his classmates were asked to write a 12-page science research paper and had to conduct original research via experimentation. He had never written anything that long in his life and wasn't sure where to start with the scientific journal research or the original research. This required the parents to step in. They insist on papers with annotations and MLA format, yet these kids have never learned how to do that. Again, the parent must step in. Also, the reliance on technology is such that most assignments are completed on a computer. My student was not used to using a pencil and paper, and he pretty much didn't know how to take good notes as a result. In fact, since his bus ride to the school was about an hour each morning, he would play games on the assigned computer (evidently, the school doesn't block certain games). As a result, he became addicted to screen time and could not seem to cope without his computer.

This is difficult. Some teachers are excellent -- outstanding in everything that they do. My student's French teacher and one of his English teachers embodied this. On the other end of the spectrum, a majority of teachers are poor teachers and lazy graders. One English teacher never returned assignments with comments, only number grades. Only two papers were required in English that year, and I could never follow what they were studying in English. One math teacher taught math concepts entirely by assigning videos for the students to watch (flipped classroom method of teaching), and that was a disaster for my student. A couple of teachers injected their politics into their lessons, which was inappropriate. The best teachers would use the online homework posting system religiously. Others would not use it or would add things at the last minute. It was difficult to track what was due and assignments would pop onto the system, at the last minute. It is unclear if this is the teacher's fault or the system's fault, but it made keeping up a challenge.

There does not seem to be any bullying at this school. The IB population is highly intelligent and they seem to respect each other, which is why my student enjoyed the other students.

The administration is not highly responsive. For example, the first year, when my student had a problem, the principal would not respond to my emails. The second year, a disgruntled student made a serious safety threat and the kid was back in school the next day.

As an eighth grader at Moody, I can say that while it can be rigorous and challenging at times, Moody offers a great education to everyone in the school. You learn so much from being in the IB program and meet a diverse group of people with a wide range of interests. Moody keeps on implementing new things every single day and can make you excited about what you're learning. Many of the teachers are phenomenal and even the ones that you may not like help your growth academically and in other ways. The one important thing to remember is that time management skills are especially needed to be developed. At times, lots of work can be packed on you but after the initial start of school, you get used to it. I'm glad to go to Moody and if you have a passion for learning or going above and beyond, go to Moody.

Hey! I'm in eighth grade at Moody, and I have loved every second of it! Although the IB program is somewhat difficult, it makes students feel accomplished and good about themselves. The teachers are encouraging and explain the material well, Mr. Llewellyn is a great principal who makes you feel comfortable, and all the students are (for the most part) polite and show IB traits through their personalities. On testing days, you feel prepared and rested-as long as you studied!- but the teachers really do a great job at giving us students the right instruction to prepare us for our MAPs tests and EOCs at the end of the year. Added bonuses are the dances, spirit weeks, and American Idol STAR Rayvon Owen preforming for us and motivating us to do our best and be honest. It was an unforgettable moment! Overall, I would totally recommend Moody to a rising middle schooler; it's one of the best experiences you'll have!

I am a 6th grader at this school, and this school is awesome! I was supposed to go to Tuckahoe's IB program, but I transferred here. I thought that I would hate it since I left all my friends at Tuckahoe, but I realized that I was wrong. This school has many, many awesome and nice teachers. Although, I am warning you that IB is very challenging. You will be assigned many projects, but as long as you try your best, you will make an A. The best teachers in Moody are, well the best ones I had, are Mrs. Walker, who is very, very strict about grading, Mrs. Hershberger, fun but challenging, Mrs. Williams, awesome, and almost every teacher. Challenging, but a very good school. There is a 99% chance that you will like it. There is a 1% chance that you will not like it. If you don't like it, something is wrong with you. Bye!!

I am an eighth grader in IB here at Moody. Overall, the curriculum is challenging and rigorous. There is a variety of different classes, sports, clubs, and languages that are available to each student. The most difficult year is seventh grade because of the numerous projects. Overall, I would recommend Moody to committed and driven students who are willing to word VERY hard at school.

I'm a 7th grader at Moody this year and I can most definetly say that Moody is the best middle school in the state. We have a vigourous, yet creative curriculum that keeps students interested. We do high school level labs and have sccess to extraordinary resources. The IB programme is a beautifully constructed program which enables students to interact deeper with their education. Parents will never understand the experiences at Moody, as it is a unique adventure that cannot even be told. Though Mr. Llewellyn was never as good as Mr. Raymond, he does represent our school in the best way. I know i will miss my time as a raider when it's time for me to leave.

My daughter started the IB program this year (2012) at Moody Middle. The teachers and staff have been extremely helpful and they care about the kids! The quality of teaching at this school is top notch. The program is amazing and the new principal of Moody Middle, Mr. Llewellyn has been wonderful and even helped us solve an unsafe situation with the morning drop off area. I can only hope that the remaining two 1/2 years at Moody Middle will be just as amazing.
