I found this community to be welcoming. I love the small town slow pace of it. Many of the kids have gone to college and graduated.

This school has completely gone downhill. The admin fail to keep students safe while in the school. Dr. Thornton cares more about increasing his pay than his employees health, or students well being.
IOWCS has taken a sharp turn in failing their students.

Some of the best teachers Ive ever encountered work at the school. Sadly you can tell their morale is extremely low thanks to a vindictive and uncaring superintendent. The school system was warned not to hire this person but insisted on doing so. They are now paying for this with low test scores, loss of some amazing teachers, and horrible morale with the students and teachers. We moved to the county because of the quality of schools and cannot wait until our last one graduates so we are done. If I were moving to Isle of Wight County I would very seriously consider home schooling or a private school while this superintendent is still in charge.

I have two daughters at this school, who always felt safe and welcomed. Overall, their teachers were very good, and some were outstanding. I appreciated the support of the administration during the school violence protests that occurred during the school day. Communication was excellent. There are not a lot of high-level and AP courses available, but otherwise I have no complaints. Highly recommend.

Highly dissatisfied. Our children don't feel safe there or valued as a student. It's over crowded and school is to small and understaffed for the amount of students and issues there.

They have no idea how to properly spend money, the building is falling apart but they are using they new 10 million dollar budget on new techh

SHS is a superb school with many opportunities for the students to learn non-traditional subjects. The teachers are very accommodating to students individual needs and are willing to come in early or stay late to ensure material is mastered.

I have no clue why the school only earned a five rating. The school itself is great and the teachers care about the students. We came from Western branch schools which were very good but tended to put kids in either the advanced classes or what I would refer to as general population . The kids at Smithfield do not bully each other and seem to all be involved in afterschool activities . The sports are well run and the band is one of the best I've seen in the area . No school is perfect but if you are involved as a parent it makes a huge difference .

The teachers are absolutely terrible. The office staff is rude and the whole place is ran off of the "good ol' boy" system. We moved here primarily for the schools and regret that decision greatly. There is little guidance and very little privacy pertaining to grades and SOL scores. My child had a teacher announce to the class her SOL score which was extremely un called for not to mention very unprofessional. The district does not have enough money to provide for the students and the quality of education has declined. They do not have books or printed material and often ask for ink and paper. They have gone through at least three principles in four years and the amount of drugs within the school is sad. When a student(s) are caught with drugs and are still allowed to participate in school events you know there is a problem. Do yourself a favor and do not move to Smithfield, your child's education will suffer.

Great school with great programs and teachers that care! We moved to the area for the shools.
