Definite must do in the mystic area. Tons to explore. There is a small indoor children's area and outdoor ship themed playground that keep the kids occupied for quite awhile. You can even rent rowboats and sailboats here in the summer months. It does tend to get crowded in the summer. I'd say the best time to visit would be early fall. Fun Halloween trick or treating programs for the kids too.
